Abstract:The electrode materials with hollow structure and/or graphene coating are expected to exhibit outstanding electrochemical performances in energy-storage systems. 2D graphene-wrapped hollow C/Fe3 O4 microspheres are rationally designed and fabricated by a novel facile and scalable strategy. The core@double-shell structure SPS@FeOOH@GO (SPS: sulfonated polystyrene, GO: graphene oxide) microspheres are first prepared through a simple one-pot approach and then transformed into C/Fe3 O4 @G (G: graphene) after calcination at 500 °C in Ar. During calcination, the Kirkendall effect resulting from the diffusion/reaction of SPS-derived carbon and FeOOH leads to the formation of hollow structure carbon with Fe3 O4 nanoparticles embedded in it. In the rationally constructed architecture of C/Fe3 O4 @G, the strongly coupled C/Fe3 O4 hollow microspheres are further anchored onto 2D graphene networks, achieving a strong synergetic effect between carbon, Fe3 O4 , and graphene. As an anode material of Li-ion batteries (LIBs), C/Fe3 O4 @G manifests a high reversible capacity, excellent rate behavior, and outstanding long-term cycling performance (1208 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles at 100 mA g(-1) ).

Abstract:A beneficial strategy for enhancing the electronic conductivity of transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) as lithium-ion battery anode material is through shortening the charge transfer path between the sulfide particles. However, the combination between the carbon-based matrix and electroactive materials is sometimes weak, which hinders the cycling stability. In this paper, the Ti-based MXene, T3C2Tx, was used as a conductive frame, combined with the ZIF-67-based CoS2/C grains yielding Ti3C2Tx/CoS2/C composite electrode through one-step and two-step synthesis methods, which displayed significantly enhanced capacity, rate performancem, and cycling stability. The compsoite reached a capacity retention of 82.6% after 100 cycles with a significantly higher capacity of 1020.5 mAh/g at 0.2 A/g current density. After 100 discharge–charge cycles, the Ti3C2Tx/CoS2/C composite revealed a low volume expansion of 9.5%, suggesting superior structural integrity and stability with the synergistic effect of both MXene 2D and CoS2/C 3D nanostructures.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Using stable TiO2 and flexible carbon as double-functional structure protector of nanostructural SnO2 to fabricate TiO2/SnO2/C composites is widely considered as a favorable strategy for improving the lithium storage performance of SnO2 anodes. But, it is still a challenge to obtain a satisfying TiO2/SnO2/C composite. Herein, an interesting porous nanostructure of TiO2/SnO2/C nanosphere composite assembled by TiO2 and SnO2 nanocrystals with an outer carbon coating has been fabricated by a well-designed approach. Thanks to the perfectly combined action of porous spherical nanostructure, TiO2 and SnO2 nanocrystals and carbon coating, the as-prepared composite obtains excellent structure stability and improved electrochemcial properties. When used as a promising anode for lithium-ion batteres, it exhibits outstanding lithium storage performance, delivering a high capacity of 687.2 mAh g(-1) after even 400 cycles. Novel quadruple-shelled hollow Zn0.5Mn0.5Co2O4/RGO heterostructure enable rapid and stable lithium storage performance

Abstract:Despite spinel oxides exhibit potential as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) anode, the low intrinsic conductivity and poor stability still make them face significant challenges. Herein, we successfully prepared quadruple-shelled hollow Zn0.5Mn0.5Co2O4 coupled with reduced graphene oxide (Zn0.5Mn0.5Co2O4/RGO) composites through an efficient and versatile synthetic strategy as a high-performance anode material in LIBs. The novel quadruple-shelled hollow structure is formed by a thermally driven non-uniform shrinkage process and Kirkendall effect diffusion process. Meanwhile, the simultaneous introduction of multiple metallic elements of Zn2+, Mn2+ and Co2+ promotes the generation of hollow multi-shelled structures during the diffusion process. The uniquely designed quadruple-shelled hollow heterostructure with the introduction of oxygen vacancies can effectively buffer the huge volume change during the cycling process, shorten the ions diffusion path, and providing more reactive sites. Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) demonstrate that structural advantage can also promote the interfacial electron transfer between RGO and Zn0.5Mn0.5Co2O4, which facilitates the ion diffusion and reduces the migration energy barrier of Li+. The Zn0.5Mn0.5Co2O4/RGO electrode exhibited a remarkable high reversible capacity (1173.4 mA h g−1 over 100 cycles at 0.1 A g−1) and exceptional long-cycle stability (623.6 mA h g−1 over 500 cycles at 2 A g−1). Moreover, LiCoO2||Zn0.5Mn0.5Co2O4/RGO lithium-ion full cells and the freestanding Zn0.5Mn0.5Co2O4/RGO anode were successfully assembled, which exhibited excellent lithium storage performance and application potential.

Abstract:The dual transition metals CoS2–SnO2@ reduced graphene oxide heterostructure quantum dots (shorten as CoS2–SnO2@rGO QDs) is intentionally synthesized by hydrothermal method. The compositions, grain sizes and contents of the synthesized CoS2–SnO2@rGO QDs are identified and calculated from XRD pattern. The layered structures and crystal sizes (<10 nm) of CoS2–SnO2 heterostructure quantum dots are confirmed by TEM high-resolution image. Moreover, the CoS2–SnO2@rGO QDs deliver higher specific capacity of 940.4, 781.9, 673.8, 506.6 and 303.1 mAh g−1 at 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 A g−1, respectively, and remained 521.4 mAh g−1 (300 cycles) with 98.9% Coulomb efficiency under 1.0 A g−1 cycling. The DFT (density functional theory) calculation results suggest that the Li ions should diffuse through two possible paths with relatively lower Ebar values of 0.519 and 0.566 eV in CoS2–SnO2@rGO QDs. Combining with XRD, XPS, TEM and DFT calculation, we therefore assign the excellent electrochemical performances of CoS2–SnO2@rGO QDs to its highly active CoS2–SnO2 interfaces for electrode reactivity enhancement, to the characteristic heterointerfaces for “extra” Li+ ions storage/release, and to super conductive/layered rGO network for better ionic/electronic transport. The successful synthesis of CoS2–SnO2@rGO QDs may provide a strategy for dual/multi-transition metal heterojunction to enhance lithium-ion battery electrode materials.

Abstract:The two-dimensionally layered material tin disulfide (SnS2) has a large layer spacing (0.59 nm) that accelerates the diffusion of Li+ and electrons. However, the poor conductivity and huge volume expansion limit its further use. Herein, a covalently tightly assembled SnS2@NRGO hybrid nanostructure with high porosity was successfully synthesized by sacrificing PMMA template support strategies. The high porosity and pore volume of SnS2@NRGO not only increases the permeability of active material and electrolyte and improves the utilization of active material, but also provides buffer space for the huge volume expansion of ultrathin SnS2 during the charging and discharging process. In addition, the strong synergistic effect of the covalent bonding and stable hybridization nanostructure provides an efficient Li+ transport path through the 3D tightly connected NRGO network. N doping introduces a large number of defects and adds more active sites for lithium intercalation. The SnS2@NRGO-3 used as the anodes for LIBs deliver excellent rate performance (540.1 mAh g(-1) at a rate of 30 A g(-1)) and outstanding cycle stability (1031.9 mAh g(-1) after 500 cycles at 5 A g(-1); the capacity degradation rate of 0.048% per cycle), which attributed to stable hybrid nanostructure and high pore volume. Therefore, the SnS2@NRGO created by us would be a very promising candidate for the future advanced high-rate long-life Li+ storage anode.
CuCo2O4 Hollow Microspheres with Graphene Composite Targeting Superior Lithium-Ion Storage

Abstract:CuCo2O4, a type of promising lithium-ion storage material, exhibits high electrochemical properties in lithium-ion batteries and enormous economic benefits. However, its practical application is limited by problems such as structural collapse and electrochemical stability during the charging and discharging process. In this work, the reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-coated CuCo2O4 (CuCo2O4/rGO) hollow microspheres were successfully prepared by electrostatic self-assembly. The CuCo2O4/rGO electrode shows an outstanding capability for lithium-ion storage and a remarkable rate capacity, e.g., 445 mA h g-1 at 5 A g-1. After 150 cycles at 0.1 A g-1, the reversible capacity of the CuCo2O4/rGO electrode is as high as 1080 mA h g-1, and it can still retain about 530 mA h g-1 in the 400th cycle at 1 A g-1. The hollow microspheres with mesoporous shells can cause electrolyte penetration into the spherical shell to effectively shorten the transfer distance of lithium ions, and the encapsulation of graphene improves the conductivity and stability of CuCo2O4, which endows CuCo2O4/rGO with a wonderful Li+ storage performance. It is proved that this is an efficient method to improve the electrochemical performance of metal compounds for better applications in energy storage.
Composition-dependent Lithium Storage Performances of SnS/SnO2 Heterostructures Sandwiching Between Spherical Graphene

Abstract:Heterostructures have broad potential application in energy conversion material and optoelectronic device since of novel interface effect and enhanced electron transport dynamics at heterointerfaces. Herein, we report a heterostructured SnS/SnO2/spherical graphene composite, in which ultrafine SnS/SnO2 nanoparticles with heterostructures are sandwiched between multi-layers of graphene sheets, exhibiting a hollow spherical architecture as a whole. Detailed electrochemical studies indicate that the molar ratio of SnS to SnO2 has great influence on the charge transport efficiency. Theoretical calculation reveals that SnS and SnO2 exhibit different work functions and the Fermi level shift is affected by the SnS/SnO2 molar ratio, thus the hybrid with the ratio close to 1.0 owns the most adsorbed lithium ions, which leads to the highest specific charge-transfer kinetics and lowest ion-diffusion resistance than other samples. Electrochemical tests show that the composite with appropriate composition delivers the best lithium storage rate performance (620 and 312.7 mAh g(-1) at 1 C and 10 C). A much stable and high reversible specific capacity of 850 mAh g(-1) is obtained after 200 cycles at 0.1 C. The appropriate molar ratio of nano-heterostructures and the novel sandwich hollow spherical composite structure are attributed to the excellent electrochemical performances. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Anode SnO2 in lithium-ion batteries suffers from volume expansion and agglomeration. Here, the SnO2 nanoparticles are hybrided with ZrO2 particles by the support of carbon nanotube networks. The obtained SnO2/C/ZrO2 composite shows improved electrochemical performances. Investigations reveal that the carbon nanotubes shorten the transmission path of electrons and Li+ ions. Ball milling with ZrO2 promotes the formation of nanosized SnO2 to weaken the internal strain change, being beneficial to buffering volume change during electrochemical cycling afterwards. High-resolution 6,7Li NMR investigations indicate that conversion and alloying reactions are stepwise involved for SnO2/C/ZrO2 anode. The strategy of designing SnO2/C/ZrO2 composite from the morphology-controlled metal-organic frameworks for energy storage widens the possibility to fabricate promising materials with enhanced performances.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials are extensively investigated in energy storage fields owing to their large surface area, easily accessible redox active sites, and abundant ion diffusion channels. However, severe self-restacking and volume expansion of 2D materials in electrochemical energy storage processes is a crucial challenge that limits their application. Herein, an effective strategy is proposed to construct graphene oxide and Ti3C2 layered nanocomposites (GO-PABA-Ti3C2) with a stable layered structure through para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) molecules’ selective welding between Ti3C2 and GO sheets. The rigid PABA molecules are welded between Ti3C2 and GO sheets by HN-C=O bonds, which contribute pillar/strain effects to enhance the structural stability and alleviate the self-restacking of Ti3C2 and GO sheets during Li+ insertion/extraction processes. The GO-PABA-Ti3C2 exhibits excellent Li+ storage performance with a high specific capacity of 493.0 mAh g–1 at 0.1 A g–1 after 230 cycles and outstanding Coulombic efficiency of 99.0% at 1.0 A g–1 after 700 cycles. Ex situ XRD measurements demonstrate that GO-PABA-Ti3C2 prepared by PABA molecular welding possesses a stable layered structure during charge/discharge processes, resulting in excellent cycle stability and long cycle life. This strategy offers a practical approach to preparing 2D layered nanocomposites and an innovative method for enhancing lithium-ion storage performance.

Abstract:Transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) have attracted considerable interest owing to their satisfied theoretical capacity, good safety and environmentally benign nature in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the poor conductivity as well as the severe volume changes during the discharge-charge process cause capacity fading rapidly, which severely impede the practical applications of TMCs. To address this challenge, a hollow hybrid architecture assembled by NixCo1-xSe2 nanosheets and strongly coupled porous carbon have been rational designed. Within this structure, the integration of nanosheets rooted on the surface of porous carbon not only provide three-dimensional conductive network but also offer plentiful pathways and active sites for electrolyte penetration and Li storage, and buffer a large volume expansion/contraction caused by lithium intercalation/deintercalation. As evidenced by electrochemical measurements, the NixCo1-xSe2/C composites used as anodes in LIBs exhibit a superior reversible high capacity of 1667 mA h g(-1) at current density of 2.0 A g(-1) over 600 cycles and an outstanding rate capability (1580 and 1093 mA h g(-1) at 3.2 and 6.4 A g(-1), respectively). Abstract:In this research, an novel approach is reported to fabricate flower-like Cu2S/MoS2 microspheres anchored on graphene (Cu2S/MoS2/rGO) by using a high-temperature mixing hydrothermal method (HTMHM). In detail, the molybdenum source and copper source precursor solutions are added into a self-made dual-chamber Teflon liner respectively, and then the Cu2S/MoS2/rGO heterostructure is successfully prepared at designed hydrothermal reaction conditions with the aid of ingenious rotation process. The obtaining graphene-wrapped Cu2S/MoS2/rGO composites exhibit fast carrier migration, good structural stability, and high Li+ approachability, which leads to glorious rate performance and cycling durability. The heterostructured Cu2S/MoS2/rGO composite shows excellent rate capability (406.6 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1) and long cycling durability (607.2 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at 0.5 A g−1 with superior capacity retention of 97.4%). The Cu2S/MoS2/rGO composites with good electrochemical performance is able to be used as negative electrodes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. This work also offers a novel way to engineer mixed metal sulfides for energy storage application.

Abstract:A novel and facile approach has been utilized to synthesize zinc tin sulfide@reduced graphene oxide (ZnSnS3@TTGO) through aqueous reaction of Na2SnO3 and Zn(CH3COO)(2), combined with a subsequent solvothermal reaction and an annealing process. The as-prepared ZnSnS3@TGO nanocomposite exhibited an excellent sodium- and lithium-ion-storage performance with large specific capacity, high rate capability, and ultralong cycle life. When used in Na-ion cells, the ZnSnS3@rGO nanocomposite delivered a capacity of 472.2 mAh g(-1) at 100 mAh g(-1) and retained a specific capacity of 401.2 mAh g(-1 )after 200 cycles. In Li-ion cells, the ZnSnS@rGO nanocomposite delivered a capacity of 959.2 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 100 mAh g(-1) and maintained a specific capacity of 551.3 mAh g(-1) at a high current density of 1 A g(-1) upon 500 cycles. The electrochemical performance results reveal that the integration of uniformly dispersed metal elements and an interconnected carbon matrix could help release the stress of volumetric excursion and provide fast electron/ion transport, leading to a remarkable electrochemical performance.

Abstract:In this work, carbon-coated bimetallic tin-nickel selenide heterostructures loaded on reduced graphene oxide composites were prepared through a metal-organic framework-assisted strategy. The carbon coating mitigates the volume expansion and maintains the structural stability, while the introduction of reduced graphene oxide and heterojunction enhances electrical conductivity and reaction kinetics, thereby together contributing to the enhanced lithium-ion storage performance. As expected, the optimal material delivers excellent lithium-ion storage performance in terms of a high reversible capacity of 1033.4 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1, outstanding rate capability, and long-term cyclability with the capacity of 726.2 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 1.0 A g-1 and 452.4 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 2.0 A g-1. Furthermore, the electrochemical reaction mechanism of the composite is analyzed.

Abstract:The practical application of spinel‐type lithium titanate Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) lithium‐ion batteries is hindered by its poor conductivity and relatively low capacity. To address these issues, an LTO/reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/SnO2 is synthesized via an in situ electrostatic self‐assembly and hydrothermal reduction process. Density function theory (DFT) simulations are conducted to understand the geometrical structures of these composites and the energy storage mechanisms. The DFT results confirm that the introduction of rGO and SnO2 to LTO increases the overall conductivity, improves the structure stability, increases Li‐ion diffusion speed. Abstract:Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) have received tremendous attention as potential anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to their high theoretical capacity. However, TMSs still suffer form low electronic conductivity and volume expansion during the intercalation/deintercalation process of sodium ions, resulting in capacity degradation. Herein, a composite of Ni-CoS2 subset of CNTs/MoS2/rGO (DC-CNTs/M) via dual-confinement strategy is constructed as anode material for SIBs. Few-layer MoS2 was prepared via the layered confinement of layered double hydroxides, which could accelerate the transfer of Na+. Moreover, in-situ-grown carbon nanotubes (CNTs) not only improve the electronic conductivity of the material but also encapsulate Ni-CoS2 can alleviate volume change during the charging/discharging process, further maintaining electrode integrity and stability. Therefore, the DC-CNTs/M electrode delivers attractive cycling stability (592.6 mAh g- 1 at 0.5 A g- 1 over 200 cycles) and high rate performance (486.2 mAh g- 1 at 5.0 A g- 1). EXAFS and XANES analyses were performed to investigate the chemical bond and coordination environments between the atoms, demonstrating the strong interactions between metal sulfides in the DC-CNTs/M composite. In addition, ex-situ XRD shows that the structural changes during the Na+ insertion/extraction processes are highly reversible. Consequently, the dual-confinement strategy would provide a unique approach to the rational design of high-performance anodes for SIBs.

Abstract:Mesoporous binary metal oxides/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) two-dimensional nanostructures can provide open large surface areas for lithium ion access and storage, holding a great promise as high-performance electrode materials for next-generation energy storage. In this work, we develop an effective strategy involving a simple polyol process and a facile thermal annealing treatment, to synthesize ZnCo2O4 Quantum Dots (QDs)/rGO hybrid. Due to the large specific surface area, strongly coupled interaction and synergic effect between ZnCo2O4 QDs and rGO, the hybrid shows excellent lithium storage ability, with high reversible specific capacity, and superior rate performance, as well as ultralong cycle life. After 100 cycles, the ZnCo2O4 QDs/rGO2 delivers a capacity of 1062mAhg−1 at a current density of 500mAg−1. Even cycling at 2000mAg−1 up to 1000 cycles, the reversible capacity still preserves 682.5mAhg−1. These electrochemical results indicate the ZnCo2O4 QDs/rGO2 hybrid could be a promising candidate material as a high-performance anode material for lithium-ion batteries.
