Abstract:Various porous materials have shown a great promise as dry sorbents for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture utilizing their large surface areas. Although there have been considerable efforts to find optimal pore size and geometry for a variety of porous materials, systematic experimental study covering various key parameters beside CO2 uptake, such as isosteric heat and selectivity against other gas, is unavailable. Here, we systemically investigate the pore size effect on the CO2 uptake and selectivity for porous activated carbon. We found that at each temperature and pressure, there exists an optimal intermediate activation condition that makes the pore size most appropriate for CO2 uptake and selectivity. Further activation increases the pore size and weakens CO2-wall interaction. This study provides an important lesson that the pore activation of porous carbon should be controlled at an optimal intermediate point to maximize CO2-wall interaction.

Abstract:The diatomite-templated carbons were prepared using diatomite as template and furfuryl alcohol as carbon resource, and were further activated using potassium hydroxide as an activating agent. The structure, pore parameters, and electrochemical capacity of diatomite-templated carbons after activation were investigated to evaluate the influence of activated condition. The results showed active carbons contained a proportion of disordered materials in the form of amorphous carbon and ordering decreased at higher activation temperatures, however, it had little relationship to KOH/carbon mass ratio. Pore parameters, such as the specific surface area and pore volume, as well as the micropore volume, showed a growing trend with the increase of activation temperature and KOH/carbon mass ratio but micro porosity showed an opposite trend. The specific capacitance of all samples were ranging from 51.5 to 98.1 Fg(-1) at current density of 1 A g(-1) and capacitance retention could maintain at more than 70% at current density of 20 A g(-1), indicating they had good electrochemical properties. Moreover, electrochemical property became better as activation temperature and KOH/carbon mass ratio decreased. (C) The Electrochemical Society of Japan, All rights reserved.

Abstract:Diatomite-templated carbon was prepared with diatomite as template and furfuryl alcohol (FA) as carbon resource,which was further activated with potassium hydroxide as activating agent.The prepared carbon materials were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD),Raman spectroscopy,scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and N2 adsorption.Simultaneously,the electrochemical properties of the porous carbon before and after activation were studied.The results show that the porous carbon after activation has higher degree of disorder in chemical structure and better electrochemical properties rather than the one before activation.The specific capacitance of the porous carbon was in the range from 45.0 to 69.2 F·g~ by the current density of 1 A·g-1 and the capacitance retention remains more than 45％ by the current density of 20 A· g1.These results show that the porous carbon after activation has good electrochemical performance and it's an ideal material for electric double layer capacitor.
Mesoporous Carbon Materials As Electrodes for Electrochemical Double-Layer Capacitor

Abstract:Nanostructured carbon materials with a regular array and narrow size distribution of mesopores have been synthesized at Oak Ridge National Laboratory via the self-assembly of block copolymers as soft templates. One promising application for these materials is as electrodes for electrochemical double-layer capacitors. To evaluate the performance, electrodes were prepared by coating the precursor onto fibrous carbon paper, followed by curing and pyrolysis at 850°C. The resulting mesoporous carbon has a surface area of 310 m 2 /g and an average pore size of 8.5 nm. Results from cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy experiments using a sulfuric acid electrolyte showed high specific capacitance values of up to 300 F/g. For comparison, a commercially available aerogel carbon coated paper was also examined.

Abstract:Activated carbons (ACs) prepared from mesophase pitch and carbonized mesophase pitch by KOH activation were used to fabricate electrodes for electric double layer capacitors. Nitrogen adsorption at 77 K was used to characterize the specific surface area and pore structure of the ACs, which showed a bimodal pore size distribution. The performance of the ACs in an organic electrolyte (1 mol/L of Et4NBF4 in propylene carbonate) was investigated with voltage sweep cyclic voltammetry and constant current charge-discharge cycling. Results show that the capacitance of the ACs not only depends on the surface area and pore size distribution, but also on carbonization treatment. SEM images show that the AC particles from carbonized pitch are formed by stacking of layered slices, which favors an infiltration of solvent into the inner surface of the carbon and improves the capacitance per unit area of micropores.

Fabrication and Properties of Double-layer Capacitor with Acetylene Black Electrode

Abstract:Porous electric double-layer capacitors were prepared successfully with acetylene black and PTFE, where acetylene black was used as electrode precursor and PTFE as a binding. The acetylene powder and the electrode microstructure were measured by both TEM and SEM respectively. The charge-and-discharge curves were measured using a charge/discharge meter. In conclusion, the specific capacitance of the double-layer capacitors increased with the decrease in preparation pressure of the electrode due to increasing both the proportion of the effective micro-pores and the available surface. As the preparation pressure decreased from 48MPa to 16MPa, 17% of the specific capacitance was increased. However, when the pressure was above 48MPa, the capacitance had almost no change with decreasing preparation pressure because the pressure affected hardly on available surface. Moreover, the specific capacitance increased with decreasing PTFE binding due to the increase in available surface. 46% of the specific capacitance was actively ascended as PTFE decreased from 14% to 6%. In addition, the charge density increased, hence the chargeable voltage increased with the increase in available surface because of high preparation pressure. Likewise, the charge density might increase and the chargeable voltage then increased with the increase in concentration of the electrolyte. Both the charge and the discharge behaviors of the double-layer capacitor were directly related to both the distribution and size of electrode pores. The capacitor discharge slowly first and then speedily while the proportion of the micro-pores increased with increasing preparation pressure.

Abstract:Improving the properties of activated carbon (AC) electrodes for enhancing the electrochemical performance of commercial supercapacitors is still a great challenge. In this work, a coconut shell carbonized raw material is used to successfully manufacture AC by the traditional steam activation method followed by further calcination in CO2. Results showed that a skeleton mesh wall was formed in AC, the thickness of the mesh wall was around 1.5 nm, and the crystalline phase of grain size of 1.13 nm was controlled to form independently in the wall of AC after calcination in CO2 for 4 h. The carbocyclic layer space of the grain phase ranges from 0.381 to 0.392 nm in AC, which is 17% wider than that of 0.335 nm of graphite. The AC shows a high specific surface area (1782 m(2)/g), and the supercapacitor prepared by AC shows a high specific capacitance (112.5 F.g(-1) at 0.1 A.g(-1)), a high capacitance retention rate (retains 89.06% after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles), a high rate performance (specific capacitance going down from 111.2 to 65.1 F.g(-1) under current density from 0.1 to 10 A.g(-1)), low internal resistance, and a power and energy capacity (energy density, 28.83 W h.kg(-1); power density, 9.89 kW.kg(-1)). It is worth comparing with the typical commercial YP-50 of Kuraray, Japan.

Abstract:Activated carbons (ACs) are usually utilized for the electrochemical capacitor due to their inherent properties, such as large surface area, high chemical stability, and good electrical conductivity. In this study, the commercial and chemically activated ACs with various surface areas were prepared and evaluated for their capacitance. The capacitances were generally increased as increasing the surface areas, but the highest surface area always did not lead to the highest capacitance. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area of chemically activated coconut-ACs (2,209 m2/g) was lower than chemically activated wood-ACs (2,903 m2/g), but the capacitance was higher. It was found that the major factor for the capacitance was not only the surface area, but also the electrical conductivity. The electrical conductivity is usually associated with crystallinity, which is represented by the nanographitic domain size and crystalline thickness along the c-axis (Lc). The crystalline structure enhances the electron mobility, increasing the capacitance. The conductivities of prepared ACs were measured at different pressures, and their crystalline structure was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:The fundamental mechanism of electrosorption of ions developing a double layer inside nanopores was studied via a combination of experimental and theoretical studies. A novel graphitized-carbon monolithic material has proven to be a good electrical double-layer capacitor that can be applied in the separation of ions from aqueous solutions. An extended electrical double-layer model indicated that the pore size distribution plays a key role in determining the double-layer capacitance in an electrosorption process. Because of the occurrence of double-layer overlapping in narrow pores, mesopores and micropores make significantly different contributions to the double-layer capacitance. Mesopores show good electrochemical accessibility. Micropores present a slow mass transfer of ions and a considerable loss of double-layer capacitance, associated with a shallow potential distribution inside pores. The formation of the diffuse layer inside the micropores determines the magnitude of the double-layer capacitance at low electrolyte concentrations and at conditions close to the point of zero charge of the material. The effect of the double-layer overlapping on the electrosorption capacitance can be reduced by increasing the pore size, electrolyte concentration, and applied potential. The results are relevant to water deionization.
Effect of Thermal Activation on the Structure and Electrochemical Properties of Carbon Material Obtained from Walnut Shells

Abstract:A simple activation method has been used to obtain porous carbon material from walnut shells. The effect of the activation duration at 400 °C in an atmosphere with limited air access on the structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of the porous carbon material obtained from walnut shells has been studied. Moreover, the structure and morphology of the original and activated carbon samples have been characterized by SAXS, low-temperature adsorption porosimetry, SEM, and Raman spectroscopy. Therefore, the results indicate that increasing the duration of activation at a constant temperature results in a reduction in the thickness values of interplanar spacing (d002) in a range of 0.38–0.36 nm and lateral dimensions of the graphite crystallite from 3.79 to 2.52 nm. It has been demonstrated that thermal activation allows for an approximate doubling of the specific SBET surface area of the original carbon material and contributes to the development of its mesoporous structure, with a relative mesopore content of approximately 75–78% and an average pore diameter of about 5 nm. The fractal dimension of the obtained carbon materials was calculated using the Frenkel–Halsey–Hill method; it shows that its values for thermally activated samples (2.52, 2.69) are significantly higher than for the original sample (2.17). Thus, the porous carbon materials obtained were used to fabricate electrodes for electrochemical capacitors. Electrochemical investigations of these cells in a 6 M KOH aqueous electrolyte were conducted by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge/discharge, and impedance spectroscopy. Consequently, it was established that the carbon material activated at 400 °C for 2 h exhibits a specific capacity of approximately 110–130 F/g at a discharge current density ranging from 4 to 100 mA/g.

High Performance Mesoporous Carbon Material Prepared by Template-Physical Activation Method

Abstract:The pore structure and electrochemical properties of mesoporous carbons prepared by silica sol template method as electrode material for supercapacitor were investigated. The mean pore size and mass specific capacitance of the mesoporous carbons increased with the increase of silica sol/carbon source (glucose) ratio. A modified template method, combining silica sol template method and CO2 physical activation method, was proposed to improve the mass specific capacitance of the mesoporous carbon with improved BET surface area. The correlation of rate capability and pore structure of mesoporous carbon was studied by constant current discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A commercial available microporous carbon was used for comparison. The result shows that mesoporous carbon with larger pore size delivers good rate capability. Mesoporous carbon synthesized by modified template method has both high mass specific capacitance and good rate capability.
The relation between pore structure and electrochemical performance of porous carbon

Abstract:The relation between pore structure and electrochemical performance of porous carbon prepared by the chemical activation method was studied.The results showed that the mesopore carbon material could be prepared at high impregnation ratio.The cycle performance of the carbon activated at 500 ℃ was poor.It was improved by high temperature treatment at 900 ℃.The rationality of "Fit linear method by grouping" was proposed and proved to obtain the effective specific surface area and surface specific capacitance of the porous carbon.The effective minimum pore size that could form electric double layer was confirmed to be 2.0 nm for the porous carbon in 1 mol/L Et4NBF4/PC electrolyte.

Abstract:Coal tar pitch (CTP) with a great deal of polynuclear aromatic structural units is a potential precursor for preparing porous carbon. In this paper, CTP was selected as raw material, and oxygen-rich hierarchical porous carbon (OHPC) was prepared successfully by facile one-step KOH activation, which was attributed to the H2O oxidation during this process. The oxygen content in hierarchical porous carbon was well above the oxygen content in CTP. Besides, possible oxidation mechanism was proposed. The influence of activation temperature and activation ratio (m KOH/m CTP) on the pore structure of OHPC was also investigated, and the largest specific surface area reached 2342 m2 g-1. When OHPC was applied to electric double layer capacitor in the two electrode system, it shows good electrochemical performance. Its specific capacitance and energy density could reach 308 F g-1 and 8.31 Wh kg-1 in 6 M KOH solution, respectively. Meanwhile, the capacitance retention of OHPCs was up to 95.4% at 2 A g-1 after 10000 cycles. This paper not only provides a simple method of oxygen doping for porous carbon, but also achieve the green and high value-added utilization of CTP.

Abstract:So far, there are still some difficulties in controlling the pore structure of porous carbon materials. Exploring the relationship between the structure and electrochemical behavior of porous carbon through optimizing pore structure is of great significance for its application in the field of energy storage.Here, we employ the interpenetrating polymer networks as the precursor to prepare ultra-microporous carbon with a pore diameter of 0.6 nm, and regulate the mesoporous content by chemical activation. The relationship between mesoporosity and electrochemical performance was studied. In our experimental results, the optimized sample has a mesoporous ratio of 55.1% and the specific surface area of 2453 m2g−1. As electrode material, its specific capacity reaches 247F g−1with excellent cycle performance. As the symmetric device, its specific energy reached 17.75Wh kg−1.

Abstract:Hazelnut shell activated carbon materials (HSACs) are promising electrode materials used for supercapacitors, due to their superior natural performance. In this research, characterizations of surface features and electrochemical performance on a series of HSACs prepared with changing calcination temperature and mass ratio of activators showed that HSACs with larger specific surface area experienced lower specific capacitance. Further structural and compositional evaluations of the HSACs by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that upon increasing calcination temperature or activator content, the specific surface area increased, but the carbon sp2/sp3 ratio and the concentration of acidic surface oxide groups decreased, and the population of basic surface oxide groups increased. These latter trends might be responsible for the decrease of specific capacitance of HSACs. The more Zn(NO3)2 activator was suppressed, the more basic surface oxide groups generated. In conclusion, this study clarified that the capacitance performance of HSACs was affected by the combined effect of micropore features and structural characteristics of HSACs, including electrical conductivity of sp2 C˭C bonds, various functional groups content, and groups inducing changes in adsorption property.

Abstract:The activated carbons (ACs) prepared from mesophase pitch with KOH etching are used to fabricate electrodes for electric double layer capacitors. The ACs with pre-carbonization are also prepared. Nitrogen adsorption at 77K is used to characterize the surface area and porous structure of the ACs, which show a bimodal pore distribution. By adjusting the residence time at 800°C, the intersection of the ACs’ microcrystallites is changed and the peak value varies between 1.7nm and 2.1nm. Pre-carbonization promotes the growth of graphitic microcrystallites and hinders the crystallites from intersecting, and thus the surface area decreases and the size of the pore is more difficult to adjust. The performance of the ACs in the organic solvent (1M of Et4NBF4 in propylene carbonate) is investigated with voltage sweep cyclic voltammetry and constant-current charge–discharge cycling. The sample with the surface area of 2258 m2/g possesses a specific capacitance as high as 145 F/g. When power density is increased to 12kW/kg, its capacitance does not decrease, and energy density keeps at 31 Wh/kg.

Abstract:A porous carbon was prepared using halloysite as a template and sucrose as carbon source by means of template method. Nitrogen adsorption analysis showed that the obtained porous carbon material possess a wide pore size distribution and a large pore volume, especially in the range of mesopores. The application of the resultant carbon for electrodes of electric double layers capacitor (EDLC) in organic LiPF6/PE+CE electrolyte indicated that the specific capacitance, as high as 232F/g at a current density of 0.05mA/cm2, was larger than for commercially activated carbons. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) also showed that the performance of templated carbon in 1mol/l aqueous solution of H2SO4 was better at a large scan rate than for the commercial activated carbons.

Abstract:A series of porous carbon samples as electric double layer capacitor electrode materials were prepared by a pyrolysis process using phenol formaldehyde resin (PF) as precursors and KOH/ZnCl2 as activation agents. Porous carbon samples were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, X ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the KOH/ZnCl2/PF mass mixing ratio and activation temperature had a remarkable effect on the porosity, the specific surface area and the pore size of the carbons. The prepared carbon material PC-6 exhibits a high specific capacitance of 141.56F/g and a average specific energy of 74.13Wh/kg at a current density of 120mA/g in the electrolyte of 1M Et3MeNBF4/PC, and the average specific energy still remained 49.48Wh/kg even at a high current density of 2000mA/g. The excellent electrochemical behavior of PC-6 can be attributed to the highly development pore structure.
