Abstract:A condition monitoring, analysis and diagnosis system for a 300 MW pumped storage generator unit is introduced. The purpose of developing this system is to provide suggestion for preventive maintenance. Structural parameters, operating characteristics and common faults of the unit are analyzed first. The hardware and sensors distribution of the system are discussed. Function modules and data flow-chart are given based on the user's requirements. Finally, its application to a unit is presented. The software is designed on the Windows-NT network platform. The system has been successfully put into operation.

Abstract:As Qingyuan pumped storage power station has already put into operation,it’s necessary to make a summary of the new advances in its design and settings of the generator-transformer unit protection Based on the comprehensive internal fault simulation and with consideration of the generator design and the instal ation of CT,the quantitative and optimization design of main protection for Qingyuan generator has been completed; By adding new trip-permitted current components, the ability of SIEMENS generator out-of-step protection to distinguish between out-of-step oscillation and stable oscil ation has been enhanced; When it comes to the protection settings of generator stator ground fault and low voltage side of main transformer ground fault,the change in generator’s capacitance and low voltage side of main transformer’s capacitance brought by GCB interrupting operation is taken into consideration. Above experiences can be used as a reference for the construction of pumped storage power station in the future.

Abstract:Abstract The pumped storage power station realizes grid connected power generation through the conversion between the potential energy of surface water and mechanical energy. It has become the strategic resource of UHV power grid with its low valley peak regulation and emergency standby function. The green basic design and design of the pumped storage power station needs systematic research. Based on the collaborative analysis method of production and ecological safety of storage disk, this paper takes Ninghai pumped storage power station as an example to carry out green infrastructure planning and design research. Through the comprehensive evaluation and analysis of construction land based on GIS, from the perspective of adaptability of power station construction to mountain creek pit environment, the function of horizontal layout is constructed in parallel and vertical layout, and a modular and distributed spatial structure of green infrastructure is constructed; Then, based on the continuous recycling of water resources, the monitoring and early warning system of power plant production ecological safety is constructed, which is “one water, two lines and three slopes”. It is hoped that the correlation between the production and the ecological dispatching of the storage tray can be found through the dynamic tracking of multiple factors and quantitative analysis of production cycle, which can provide reliable basis for timely mitigation of damage and formulation of compensation strategies, Scientific control of green infrastructure planning, design and construction.

Abstract:As the "regulator" of the power system, the pumped storage power station has the advantages of flexible working condition conversion, fast adjustment speed, and short response time. Compared with thermal power units, pumped storage units participate in the primary frequency control(PFC) and secondary frequency control (Automatic Generation Control, AGC) more frequently. Learning from the "Implementation Rules for Auxiliary Service Management of Grid-connected Power Plants and Implementation Rules for Grid-connected Operation Management of Power Plants(Two Rules)"of the six major regional power systems in China, this article firstly establishes a comprehensive performance evaluation system of frequency control for pumped storage units; On this basis, we determine the weight of each index according to the unit's frequency control reserve capacity; Finally, based on the actual operating data of a pumped storage power station in North China, we use the TOPSIS evaluation method to evaluate the performance of PFC, the performance of AGC and the comprehensive performance of frequency control of each unit in the station, and compare the evaluation results.

Abstract:Few studies of vertical pipe inlet-outlet of pumped storage plant have been reported in the literature.In this work,a series of hydraulic model tests and numerical simulation of flow velocity,head losses and vortex formation under various operation conditions were carried out for the design of a pumped-storage plant.The original design scheme was optimized through modification of the weir and the anti-vortex beam.This work provides an important reference for the study of bidirectional flow.

Abstract:Since the 21st century, China has ushered in a new upsurge in hydropower energy development in large-scale river basin cascade hydropower. The hydropower station has the advantages of good regulation performance and flexible operation. It is the best frequency modulation and peak-shaving power supply. At the same time, the mutual compensation and adjustment between hydropower stations makes the utilization of electric energy more reliable, high-quality and economical, and has less environmental pollution. Therefore, the operation status monitoring and fault diagnosis of hydropower stations are an important guarantee for the safe and stable operation of hydropower stations. Real-time monitoring and fault diagnosis of the operation and deterioration laws of hydropower units can effectively avoid sudden failures and control the occurrence of gradual failures, thus reducing the maintenance cost of the unit and improving the life of the equipment and the efficiency of equipment operation.

Abstract:the units monitoring and analysis system which was used in Beijing SSL pumped storage plant including the components of the system,the measuring points and the characteristic of the system were introduced in this paper.This system recorded the data of the vibration and run-out before and after the repair,in order to check up the effect of the repair and provide the information to repair.After the repair,the PDA and oil chromatogram systems were installed on unit 3,all of these systems provide the information to decide whether the unit need repair.

Abstract:Pumped storage systems are attractive for power generation and storage with the development of clean energy. The combined operating mode of wind energy, solar energy and pumped storage systems is an emerging form of energy production, which brings pumped storage systems challenge in transient operation. Here we innovatively present a transient model of a multi-unit pumped storage system by coupling hydraulic system with unit system. We demonstrate that the proposed model can reflect the coupling effect of units during transient process. The simulation is provided with one unit shutdown under three kinds of closing laws and another unit controlled by PID controller at rated condition. The dynamic responses of unit-1 head are negatively related with its flow and output. The fluctuation of the unit-2 head is always higher than that of unit-1, and their fluctuation periods are similar. Analysis of dynamic characteristics of the pumped storage system suggest that transient performance improvement can be achieved by changing the motion law of guide vanes. The influence of guide vanes on the transient performance of the pumped storage system is investigated during load rejection process and the results could enable the flexible operation of multi-unit pumped storage systems for renewable power generation.

Abstract:Pumped storage power station is an important regulating tool for peak load regulation and frequency regulation of the power grid, especially its primary frequency regulation function, which is of profound significance for the safety and stability of the power grid. As the core equipment of the pumped storage power station, the reversible design of the pump turbine makes it easy to have hydraulic fluctuation and mechanical instability when the unit runs to the “S” characteristic area, which will cause the frequency oscillation of the generator under the condition of primary frequency regulation. Therefore, some innovative work is studied in this paper: (1) an accurate hydraulic-mechanical-electrical coupling system mathematical model of pumped storage unit regulation system (PSURS) is established based on full characteristic curve of the pump turbine and seventh-order synchronous generator and excitation system; (2) the dynamic response characteristics of primary frequency regulation of pumped storage unit (PSU) under different water heads and different frequency disturbances are analyzed by numerical simulation; (3) in view of the unstable condition of the unit under the large frequency disturbance when it operates in the low head and small load area, the objective optimization function considering the ITAE index of hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical factors is proposed; and (4) fractional-order PID controller and the bacterial-foraging chemotaxis gravitational search algorithm (BCGSA) combined optimization strategy is used for PSURS optimization regulation and parameter optimization. The results show that the joint optimization strategy proposed in this paper has smaller objective function value, and makes the PSURS pass through the unbalanced area quickly, with better primary frequency regulation speed and smaller regulation depth.

Abstract:Power regulation characteristics in pump mode of variable‐speed pumped storage unit. Pumped storage plants (PSPs) play an important role in renewable energy consumption in power systems. Variable‐speed technology is a new and critical direction for the development of PSPs. In pump mode, variable‐speed pumped storage units (VSPSUs) have wider power regulation ranges and more flexible power responses than fixed‐speed pumped storage units (FSPSUs); however, the corresponding quantification study of VSPSUs is rare. Therefore, this study aims to quantify the static and dynamic power regulation characteristics of VSPSU in pump mode. First, the modeling of the fast speed control strategy of VSPSU in pump mode is improved. Then, the power regulation range of the VSPSU is explored. The factors (i.e., power command, governor, and converter) affecting the power response rapidity are quantified through the engineering case of a variable‐speed PSP adopting the doubly fed induction machine. Accordingly, suggestions on the settings of the parameters are provided. Quantification results show that parameter tuning based on this study effectively solves the problem of low regulation rate caused by great power fluctuations under typical power regulation cases in pump mode. This VSPSU has the fastest regulation rate of 13.75%/s when adjusting 40% power. This study could provide technical support to the practical operation of VSPSU.

Abstract:The calculation of transition process of pumped storage power station needs to consider many complicated working conditions. By studying the transition process calculation conditions of industry regulations and actual power stations, this paper analyzes the parameters that affect the transition process calculation, comprehensively considers the safety and economic benefits of power stations to determine the main calculation conditions, and puts forward the conditions that should be paid attention to in the transition process calculation of pumped storage power stations, so as to provide references for the selection of transition process calculation conditions of relevant power stations.

Abstract:Pumped-storage can quickly and flexibly respond to adjust the grid fluctuation and keep the grid stability because of its various functions. Besides, it is an effective power storing tool and now it has become the largest and most widely used energy storage form. Many countries configured a certain proportion of pumped storage power in the network to keep their grid stability. This paper introduces the current development status of the pumped storage power (PSP) station in some different countries based on their own economic demands and network characteristics. Then the evolutions of the pumped-storage power station in China are focus reviewed. To provide better technical support for future PSP development, the typical features of the PSP in plant design, construction, operations, and economic evaluation are described in detail compared with the conventional hydropower plant. The difficulties and challenges of the pumped storage technology faced in China are also summarized and the future development directions are prospected.

Abstract:On the basis of practical situation in one power plant, a supporting system for condition based maintenance of the feed-water pumps in said power plant has been developed. Taking the reliability as the centre, and based on failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA), an optimal policy decision for maintenance has been given out after situation evaluation and risk estimation of the feed-water pump by using the characteristic spatial vector method and the fuzzy mathematical method . Practical operation shows that the said system has friendly interface, being convenient to operate, and having correct policy decision, laying a solid foundation for realizing condition based maintenance of the equipments in whole plant.

Abstract:A pumped storage unit is a crucial guarantee in the pursuit of increased clean energy, especially in the progressively severe circumstances of low energy utilization and poor coordination of the integration of volatile renewable energy. However, due to their bidirectional operation design, pumped turbines possess an S-characteristic attribution, wherein the unsteady phenomena of unit vibration, pressure pulsation, and cavitation erosion happen during the start-up process and greatly impact the stable connection to the power grid. Therefore, a systematic study concentrating on an optimal unified paradigm of a start-up strategy for a pumped storage plant is conducted. Model construction, effective analysis, controller design, and collaborative optimization are sequentially expounded. Firstly, a refined start-up nonlinear model of a pumped storage plant with complex boundary conditions is constructed, wherein the delay time of frequency measurement, saturation, and dead zone features are comprehensively taken account. Furthermore, a variable universe fuzzy PID controller and its operation laws are proposed and specifically designed for the speed governing system of the pumped storage plant; the control quality and anti-disturbance performance are verified by a no-load frequency disturbance experiment. On this basis, taking speed overshoot for stationarity and speed rising time for rapidity, a novel open–close loop collaborative fuzzy control strategy is proposed with rotational speed feedback and a variable universe fuzzy PID control. The experiment results show that the proposed unified paradigm has better control performance in various performance indexes, and more balanced control quality and dynamic performance under various complex start-up conditions, which has great application value for ensuring the unit's timely response to the power grid regulation task and improving the operating stability of the power system.

Abstract:Pumped storage, as the storage technology with the largest installed capacity and mature technology, plays a key regulation role in the multi-energy co-generation system. The core of regulation accuracy is the high-fidelity modeling of pumped storage. This paper improves the insufficiency of the conventional pumped storage model (CPSM) in exaggerating the flexibility of pumped storage units by setting up non-operable operating condition regions, and incorporates the condition switching loss into the model consideration, on the basis of which a high fidelity pumped storage model (HFPSM) is established. Secondly, a multi-objective function of the operation model is set from the consideration of economy, environmental protection and stability, and a engineering application level optimal operation model of wind power-photovoltaic-thermal power-pumped storage multi-energy co-generation system based on HFPSM is proposed. Thirdly, two research indicators, the thermal power volatility indicator and the pumped storage unit utilization rate, are proposed. Fourthly, combined with examples, the effects of CPSM and HFPSM on the optimized operation of the system are investigated. It is found that adding four 50MW pumped storage units to the system can reduce the total operating cost by 10.34% and the environmental cost by 83.61%. The optimisation of the high fidelity model is better under the premise of ensuring safe, stable and efficient operation of the system. Optimizing the number of unit startups and shutdowns for the high fidelity model to 25.8% of the conventional model. Finally, by exploring the optimal operation of a multi-energy co-generation system with different pumped storage installed capacities, it is found that the proposed high fidelity model makes the optimization results more in line with the actual operation. The flexibility of the pumped storage units no longer increases with the increase of installed capacity, which provides a reference for the planning of the storage capacity in the multi-energy co-generation system.

Abstract:As an important part of the new energy grid connection, pumped storage hydropower plays an important role in black start, frequency modulation and phase modulation, peak shaving and valley filling, energy storage and accident reserve. In order to ensure the security and stability of the power system under extreme fault conditions after the pumped storage hydropower is connected to the grid, it is particularly important to configure reasonable security and stability control measures. Based on the development status and operation characteristics of pumped storage hydropower stations at home and abroad, considering the need of system security and stability control, this paper takes a pumped storage hydropower station in Southwest China as an example to simulate and analyze the transient characteristics of the pumped storage hydropower after grid connection. In view of the possible extreme fault conditions, a regional security control system is designed, and the configuration, control measures and strategies of the security control device on the pumping side are studied.

Abstract:The pump-turbine with a rated power capacity of 375MW each at Xianju pumped storage plant is the most powerful one under construction in China. In order to avoid the instability near no-load conditions, the hydraulic design of the pump-turbine has been optimized to improving the S characteristic in the development of the model pump-turbine. This paper presents the cause of S characteristic of a pump-turbine by CFD simulation of the internal flow. Based on the CFD analysis, the hydraulic design optimization of the pump-turbine was carried out to eliminate the S characteristics of the machine at Xianju pumped storage plant and a big step for removing the S characteristic of a pump-turbine has been obtained. The model test results demonstrate that the pump-turbine designed for Xianju pumped storage plant can smoothly operate near no-load conditions without an addition of misaligned guide vanes.

Abstract:The Yangjiang Pumped Storage Power Station (PSP) is the largest unit rated output PSP that has been built in China, with a maximum water head of nearly 700m and a unit capacity of 400MW. The ultra high water head and its large range of the PSP means a significant difficulty during the dydraulic research and development of the pump-turbine. In this paper, it is introduced on model test and results in the EPFL and IWHR. It is studied on energy performance, cavitation, pressure pulsation and “S” characteristic of pump-turbine with splitter blade. The unit data analys after put into operaton indicat highly hydraulic stability and relative tiny vibration, which just verify the model test. As the model and prototype results show that Yangjiang pump-turbine is outstanding in various indexes and quite excellent in comprehensive hydaulic performance.
