Abstract:Bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cell (OSC) has become a major thrust in solar energy research. It is highly critical to fabricate large-area high-efficiency OSCs in order to maximize the fraction of active area and hence their practical application. In this paper, we have fabricated a promising hybrid transparent electrode consisting of high resolution embedded silver grid (Ag-grid) in hybridization with high conductance poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) (PH1000), which gives both high transparency and low sheet resistance. We further demonstrate its application in large-area high efficiency OSCs. By carefully tuning the properties of the Ag-grid based hybrid electrodes, the sheet resistance is further reduced to as low as 1.2Ωsq−1. Inverted OSCs with device area of 1.21cm2 exhibited a record PCE of 3.36% for poly(3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PC61BM) blend film as the active layer; and the PCE of PTB7:PC71BM devices reached 5.85%. To the best of our knowledge, the PCE of 5.85% is the highest in large-area flexible OSCs (>1cm2) till date.
12.42% Monolithic 25.42 cm 2 Flexible Organic Solar Cells Enabled by an Amorphous ITO‐Modified Metal Grid Electrode

Abstract:Printed metal nanogrid electrode exhibits superior characteristics for use in flexible organic solar cells (OSCs). However, the high surface roughness and inhomogeneity between grid and blank region is adverse for performance improvement. In this work, a thin amorphous indium tin oxide (ITO) film (α-ITO) is introduced to fill the blank and to improve the charge transporting. The introduction of α-ITO significantly improves the comprehensive properties of metal grid electrode, which exhibits excellent bending resistance and long-term stability under double 85 condition (under 85 °C and 85% relative humidity) for 200 h. Both experimental and simulation results reveal α-ITO with a sheet resistance of 20 000 Ω □-1 is sufficient to improve the charge transporting within the adjacent grids, leading to a remarkable efficiency of 16.54% for 1 cm2 flexible devices. With area increased to 4.00, 9.00, and 25.42 cm2 , the devices still display a performance of 16.22%, 14.69%, and 12.42%, respectively, showing less efficiency loss during upscaling. And the 25.42 cm2 monolithic flexible device exhibits a certificated efficiency of 12.03%. Moreover, the device shows significantly improved air stability relative to conventional high-conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate-modified device. All these make the α-ITO-modified Ag/Cu electrode promise to achieve high-efficient and long-term stable large-area flexible OSCs.

Abstract:Developing indium-tin-oxide (ITO)-free flexible organic photovoltaics (OPVs) with upscaling capacity is of great significance for practical applications of OPVs. Unfortunately, the efficiencies of the corresponding devices lag far behind those of ITO-based rigid small-area counterparts. To address this issue, an advanced device configuration is designed and fabricated featuring a top-illuminated structure with ultrathin Ag as the transparent electrode. First, a conjugated polyelectrolyte layer, i.e., PCP-Li, is inserted to effectively connect the bottom Ag anode and the hole transport layer, achieving good photon to electron conversion. Second, charge collecting grids are deposited to suppress the increased resistance loss with the upscaling of the device area, realizing almost full retention of device efficiency from 0.06 to 1 cm2 . Third, the designed device delivers the best efficiency of 15.56% with the area of 1 cm2 on polyimide substrate, representing as the record among the ITO-free, large-area, flexible OPVs. Interestingly, the device exhibits no degradation after 100 000 bending cycles with a radius of 4 mm, which is the best result for flexible OPVs. This work provides insight into device structure design and optimization for OPVs with high efficiency, low cost, superior flexibility, and upscaling capacity, indicating the potential for the future commercialization of OPVs.

Abstract:Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Most reported strategies are from the perspective of the active layers to control the morphology of the donor/acceptor blend, with few methods focusing on modifying the transporting layers. Here, we develop a facile method to enhance both the thermal stability and efficiency of OPVs simultaneously from the perspective of the electron-transporting layer (ETL). Compared with traditional planar ETLs used in OPVs, our mesoporous ETL is designed to serve as a rigid scaffold to inhibit polymer diffusion upon heating. Furthermore, this structure creates more surface-area contact between the active layer and the ETL, potentially enhancing charge-extraction efficiency. As a result, the power-conversion efficiency (PCE) with this structure was enhanced by 11% relative to the planar structure. After being subjected to thermal stability test, the PCE of the mesoporous structure retained 69% of its original value.

Abstract:Ultra‐thin flexible organic solar cells (OSCs) have garnered widespread attention in wearable electronic devices for their lightweight and excellent conformability. Silver nanowires (AgNWs) are one of the most widely used bottom electrodes because of their high conductivity and transmittance. However, the high roughness of AgNWs on the flexible substrate exerts adverse effects on device performance. To address this critical issue, we developed a bilayer electron‐transport‐materials (ETMs) strategy consisting of an indium‐doped zinc oxide (IZO) and a pristine ZnO. The IZO is utilized as the first layer of ETM, which can effectively fill voids in AgNWs to form a high‐conductive composite electrode. The ZnO is used as the second layer of ETM, facilitating charge extraction. The ultra‐thin flexible OSCs prepared based on the gradient bilayer ETMs can achieve a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.1%, associated with improved mechanical stability, showing a PCE retention of 93% after 10,000 bending cycles (R = 1 mm) and 82% under 1,000 compression (30%)‐release cycling test. To the best of our knowledge, it's the highest efficiency for ultra‐thin (less than 10 μm) flexible OSCs based on the solution‐processed electrodes. Abstract:Transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) with multi‐length scaled structure are promising candidates as a potential replacement for indium tin oxide (ITO). In this work, multi‐length scaled silver nanowire (AgNW) grids are demonstrated as TCEs for organic solar cells. The multi‐length scale silver nanowire grids are prepared by top‐down patterning using a neutral vapor etching process. Patterning AgNW film into multi‐length scale grid structures could improve the optical transmittance and enhance the use of incident photons. Based on these multi‐length scale AgNW grids, inverted bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells with power conversion efficiency up to 9.02% are fabricated, which are higher than that based on the original AgNW films and comparable to that based on ITO.

Abstract:Highly efficient, indium tin oxide (ITO)-free and flexible organic photovoltaic cells are demonstrated with 10.4% power conversion efficiency (PCE) through the innovative integration of ultrathin metal film electrode, conductive fullerene interfacial layer, and efficient active blend into a microcavity-embedded device. In addition, a high PCE of 7.21% is achieved for the upsized devices with an active area of 1 cm2.

Abstract:All-solution processed organic solar cells are the ultimate aim of printable photovoltaics, but their electrical losses arising from poor contact of top electrodes greatly limit efficiency improvement. To solve the problem, a solution-processed hybrid top electrode was constructed using silver nanowires (AgNWs) as the skeleton and ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) as the matrix. When constructing the skeleton, a spin-rinsing treatment was first used to reduce the amount of the residual insulating polyvinylpyrrolidone wrapped around the AgNWs to promote intimate contact among the AgNWs in the skeleton. Then, the ZnO-NPs matrix was deposited onto the AgNWs skeleton, bridging the AgNWs skeleton with the underlayer ZnO-NPs electron transporting layer (ETL). The underlayer ZnO-NPs ETL can also induce the growth of the ZnO-NPs matrix to minimize lattice mismatch, which creates additional transport channels from the ETL to the AgNWs skeleton for charge collection. As a result, the obtained electrode significantly enhances the electrical contact in the device, thus delivering record power conversion efficiencies of 16.04% and 14.54% for rigid and flexible all-solution processed OSCs, respectively.

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) show the potential to harness solar energy at a lower cost and in a greener way with the merits of mechanical flexibility and potential low-cost upscaling production with solution processing. Meanwhile, the common use of toxic halogenated solvents causes pollution to the natural environment, and thus, needs to be avoided. Following the authors' previous work on the design of top-illuminated ultrathin Ag-based device structure highlighting most merits of OSC, herein non-halogen solvent and additive processing OSCs are presented, which exhibit high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.64%, close to the best PCE with the commonly used halogen solvent. Interestingly, it is observed that the additive and the multicomponent strategy (blending third component BTP-S2 into PM6:L8-BO binary blend) synergistically affect the optimal morphology and device performance. Finally, OSC devices featuring green solvent processing, indium tin oxide-free, flexibility, and upscaling merits are fabricated and exhibit the best PCE of 13.76% with high mechanical robustness and good stability against heat or light illumination. This work provides a prospective potential for manufacturing the OSC toward practical applications.

Abstract:A polyimide (PI) modification strategy is presented to smooth PET substrates for the fabrication of ITO‐free organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices. This approach results in decreased trap‐assisted recombination losses, improved exciton dissociation efficiency, and a lower density of pinholes in flexible OPV devices, ultimately leading to enhanced photovoltaic performance under both strong and weak illumination conditions. The development of flexible ITO‐free devices is crucial for the industrial advancement of organic photovoltaic (OPV) technology. Here, a novel ITO‐free device architecture is proposed, and ITO‐free OPV devices are realized on glass substrates with performance comparable to that of ITO‐based devices. It is also demonstrated that the performance of ITO‐free devices on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates is limited due to the higher surface roughness of PET, leading to high voltage losses, low device quantum efficiency, and high device leakage current. To address the issue of high roughness on the PET surface, a polyimide (PI) modification strategy is developed and the PI‐modified PET is employed as the substrate to construct flexible ITO‐free OPV devices and large‐area modules with an active area of up to 16.5 cm2. This approach leads to decreased trap‐assisted recombination losses, enhanced exciton dissociation efficiency, and a reduced density of pinholes in flexible OPV devices, resulting in improved photovoltaic performance under both strong and weak illumination conditions. The outcomes of this work are expected to advance the industrial development of flexible organic photovoltaic technology.

Abstract:Hybrid transparent monolayer graphene/metal grid is proposed as top electrode of semitransparent organic solar cells. The hybrid electrode using gold grid on flexible polyethylene terephthalate substrate shows very low sheet resistance of 22 +/- 3 Omega/square and high optical transmittance of 81.4%, which is comparable to conventional indium tin oxide/glass electrode. Using lamination process, the layer of poly(3,4-ethylenedioythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) doped with D-sorbitol plays an important role in the electrical performance of the laminated devices. In addition, the devices show best power convention efficiency of 3.1% and fill factor of 55.0%, which are much better than those of similar graphene-based semitransparent organic solar cells. Greatly enhanced hole collection of MoOx with top sub-10 nm thick silver films for gridless and flexible crystalline silicon heterojunction solar cells

Abstract:Greatly enhanced hole collection of MoO x is demonstrated experimentally with a top sub-10 nm thick Ag film, allowing for an efficient dopant-free contacted crystalline silicon (c-Si) heterojunction solar cell without a front grid electrode. With the removal of shadows induced by the front grid electrode, the gridless solar cell with the MoO x /Ag hole-selective contact (HSC) shows an increment of ∼8% in its power conversion efficiency (PCE) due to the greatly improved short-circuit current density ( J sc ) as well as the almost undiminished fill factor (FF) and open-circuit voltage ( V oc ), while the gridless solar cells with the conventional MoO x /ITO and pure MoO x HSCs exhibit ∼20% and ∼43% degradations in PCE due to the overwhelming decrease in their FF and J sc , respectively. Through systematic characterizations and analyses, it is found that the ultrathin Ag film (more conductive than ITO) provides an additional channel for photogenerated holes to transport on MoO x , contributing to the great enhancement in the hole collection and the great suppression of the shunt loss in the gridless solar cells. A 50 μm thick gridless c-Si heterojunction solar cell with the MoO x /Ag HSC is 75% thinner but is 86% efficient compared to its 200 μm thick counterpart (while the 50 μm thick gridless solar cell with the MoO x /ITO HSC is much less efficient). It is over 82% efficient after being bent to a curvature radius as small as 4 mm, also showing superior mechanical flexibility to its counterpart with the MoO x /ITO HSC. Our MoO x /Ag double-layer HSC can be easily fabricated through thermal evaporation without breaking the vacuum, saving both the time and cost of the fabrication of the whole device. Therefore, this work provides a guide for the design of efficient HSCs for high-efficiency, low-cost, and flexible solar cells.

Flexible silver nanowire meshes for high-efficiency microtextured organic-silicon hybrid photovoltaics

Abstract:Hybrid organic-silicon heterojunction solar cells promise a significant reduction on fabrication costs by avoiding energy-intensive processes. However, their scalability remains challenging without a low-cost transparent electrode. In this work, we present solution-processed silver-nanowire meshes that uniformly cover the microtextured surface of hybrid heterojunction solar cells to enable efficient carrier collection for large device area. We systematically compare the characteristics and device performance with long and short nanowires with an average length/diameter of 30 μm/115 nm and 15 μm/45 nm, respectively, to those with silver metal grids. A remarkable power conversion efficiency of 10.1% is achieved with a device area of 1 × 1 cm(2) under 100 mW/cm(2) of AM1.5G illumination for the hybrid solar cells employing long wires, which represents an enhancement factor of up to 36.5% compared to the metal grid counterpart. The high-quality nanowire network displays an excellent spatial uniformity of photocurrent generation via distributed nanowire meshes and low dependence on efficient charge transport under a high light-injection condition with increased device area. The capability of silver nanowires as flexible transparent electrodes presents a great opportunity to accelerate the mass deployment of high-efficiency hybrid silicon photovoltaics via simple and rapid soluble processes.
Increase in the efficiency and stability of large-area flexible organic photovoltaic modules via improved electrical contact

Abstract:Large-area flexible organic photovoltaic modules suffer from electrical shunt and poor electrical contact between adjacent subcells, causing efficiency and stability losses. Here we improve the performance of large-area flexible organic photovoltaic modules through suppressing electrical shunt and improving electrical contact. We embed large-area silver nanowire electrodes into polymer substrates to reduce surface roughness and therefore to suppress electrical shunt. We deposit chromium and silver lines between adjacent subcells to improve electrical contact. We show that chromium suppresses the aggregation of the silver film, increasing its laser fluence tolerance and retaining its conductance under thermal annealing, mechanical bending and illumination. These improvements enhance the photovoltaic efficiency and illumination stability of the flexible organic photovoltaic modules. Large-area flexible modules achieve certified efficiencies of 14.04% (active area: 41 cm 2 ) and 13.10% (active area: 370 cm 2 , with an open-circuit voltage of 103.51 V) and retain 90.4 ± 2.3% of the initial efficiency after continuous illumination for 912 hours.

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) show great promise for future applications due to their merits of low cost, flexibility, aesthetic beauty with vivid colors, etc. However, the "conventional" device architecture with brittle and expensive glass/indium tin oxide (ITO) transparent electrode weakens these potential advantages, and restricts it to small area for high performance. To address these issues, we develop a device architecture simultaneously combining the advantages of high performance, superior flexibility, diverse colors and low-cost up-scaling production. The device structure features a top-illumination geometry with a thermally evaporated ultra-thin Ag film as transparent electrode for ITO replacement. The use of ultra-thin Ag reduces the production cost. Moreover, the formation of optical micro-cavity and high conductance of ultra-thin Ag enables high performance for up-scaled OSCs. Besides of the intrinsic color of the active layers, this device architecture further enables diverse colors via tuning the TeO2 layer atop of the ultra-thin Ag transparent electrode. This top-illumination structure is more tolerant for substrates and enables superior flexibility with wider flexible substrates selection. As results, the flexible OSCs with up-scaled of 1.05 cm2 exhibits the best performance of 13.09% (certified 11.9%) with superior flexibility, aesthetic of diverse colors, representing one of the best ITO-free up-scaled flexible OSCs. Complete Solution-Processed Semitransparent and Flexible Organic Solar Cells: A Success of Polyimide/Ag-Nanowires- and PH1000-Based Electrodes with Plasmonic Enhanced Light Absorption

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) have been widely studied due to the advantages of easy fabrication, low cost, light weight, good flexibility and sufficient transparency. In this work, flexible and semitransparent OSCs were successfully fabricated with the adoption of both polyimide/silver nanowires (PI/AgNW) and a conducting polymer PEDOT:PSS named PH1000 as the transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs). It is demonstrated that PI/AgNW is more suitable as a cathode rather than an anode in the viewpoint of its work function, photovoltaic performance, and simulations of optical properties. It is also found that the light incidence from PH1000 TCE can produce more plasmonic-enhanced photon absorption than the PI/AgNW electrode does, resulting in more high power conversion efficiency. Moreover, a high light transmittance of 33.8% and a decent efficiency of 3.88% are achieved for the whole all-flexible semitransparent device with only 9% decrease of resistance in PI/AgNW after 3000 bending cycles. This work illustrates that PI/AgNW has great potential and bright prospect in large-area OSC applications in the future.

Achieving High Fill Factor in Organic Photovoltaic Cells by Tuning Molecular Electrostatic Potential Fluctuation

Abstract:In the field of organic photovoltaics (OPVs), significant progress has been made in tailoring molecular structures to enhance the open-circuit voltage and the short-circuit current density. However, there remains a crucial gap in the development of coordinated material design strategies focused on improving the fill factor (FF). Here, we introduce a molecular design strategy that incorporates electrostatic potential fluctuation (ESPF) to design organic photovoltaic materials. By reducing the ESPF amplitude of IT-4F, we synthesized a new acceptor named ITOC6-4F. When using PBQx-TF as a donor, the ITOC6-4F-based cell shows a markedly low recombination rate constant of 0.66×10-14 cm3 s-1 and demonstrates an outstanding FF of 0.816, both of which are new records for binary OPV cells. Also, we find that flat ESPF could decrease the energetic disorder of OPV cells, reducing energy loss. Finally, the ITOC6-4F-based cell creates the highest efficiency of 16.0% among medium-gap OPV cells. Our work holds a vital implication for guiding the design of high-performance OPV materials.

Abstract:Efficient electron transport layer–free perovskite solar cells (ETL‐free PSCs) with cost‐effective and simplified design can greatly promote the large area flexible application of PSCs. However, the absence of ETL usually leads to the mismatched indium tin oxide (ITO)/perovskite interface energy levels, which limits charge transfer and collection, and results in severe energy loss and poor device performance. To address this, a polar nonconjugated small‐molecule modifier is introduced to lower the work function of ITO and optimize interface energy level alignment by virtue of an inherent dipole, as verified by photoemission spectroscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy measurements. The resultant barrier‐free ITO/perovskite contact favors efficient charge transfer and suppresses nonradiative recombination, endowing the device with enhanced open circuit voltage, short circuit current density, and fill factor, simultaneously. Accordingly, power conversion efficiency increases greatly from 12.81% to a record breaking 20.55%, comparable to state‐of‐the‐art PSCs with a sophisticated ETL. Also, the stability is enhanced with decreased hysteresis effect due to interface defect passivation and inhibited interface charge accumulation. This work facilitates the further development of highly efficient, flexible, and recyclable ETL‐free PSCs with simplified design and low cost by interface electronic structure engineering through facile electrode modification.
