Abstract:This paper presents a novel method, Reactive ion Beam Etching ( RIBE ) technique, for fabricating Diffractive Optical Elements (DOEs). The research demonstrates that RIBE technique has many characters,such as high etching rate,good isotropy and flexible etching parameters control. This technique is advantageous for manufacturing fine structures of DOEs and micro-optical elements. The parameters' influences on etching rate are given. This method is used in fabricating DAMMANN Gratings in infrared materials.

Abstract:Diffractive optical elements play a crucial role in the miniaturization of the optical systems, especially in correcting achromatic aberration. Considering the rapidity and validity of the design method, we propose a fast method for designing broadband achromatic diffractive optical elements. Based on the direct binary search algorithm, some improvements have been made including the selection of the initial height map to mitigate the uncertainty, the reduction of the variations to accelerate the optimization and the increase of sampling rate to deal with the large operation bandwidth. The initial height map is calculated instead of random initial value. Due to different regions of the height map contributing to point spread functions differently, the variations are reduced to speed up the optimization. The large operation bandwidth is solved by increasing the sampling rate at unfitted wavelengths instead of setting weighting coefficients. We demonstrate via simulations that our method is effective through several examples. The design of broadband achromatic diffractive optical elements can be quickly achieved by our method.

Abstract:According to the disadvantage of single layer diffractive optical element(DOE),a new DOE is introduced.More than two layers of stratified microstructures of different phase heights and dispersive materials are taken into the configuration to increase variable factors of the phase distribution function of multilayer DOE.By controlling the phase modulation of wide waveband to approximate to integer times of 2π,the diffraction efficiency of a double-layer DOE can be greater than 96% in 0.4~0.8 μm visual band.As substitute for fluorite lens,a double-layer DOE is used in a long focal-length apochromatic objective lens.The modulation transfer function(MTF) of this hybrid optical system is suggested for evaluating diffraction efficiency of the multilayer DOE.The results show the diffraction efficiency has a wide and symmetrical distribution in the whole waveband.

Abstract:An aperiodic two-dimensional diffractive optical element (DOE) with subwavelength features as an uniform beam shaper which shapes an input laser beam into an uniform intensity distribution in an observation plane has been designed. A rigorous design method combined an iterative optimization algorithm with a rigorous electromagnetic computation --- the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method has been proposed. The design method and the FDTD method have been discussed in detail. The simulated results have shown that the DOE designed by this rigorous method can produce an uniform field distribution with flat-top, steep edge and low profile error in an observation plane.

Abstract:The rapid miniaturization in technologies for signal, image processing and optical communication increases the need for diffractive optical elements (DOEs), whose scales move closer to that of the illumination wavelength. The optical behaviour of DOEs is dependent on the polarization of the incident light, and so it is necessary to use a rigorous electromagnetic theory of diffraction to accurately design and analyse its performance. An iterative optimization algorithm for designing two dimensional, finite aperture, aperiodic diffractive optical elements based on a rigorous electromagnetic computation model-the finite-difference time-domain method-has been introduced. The algorithm can present rigorous design results with reasonable computational cost. Two kinds of DOEs designed by our algorithm, one for realizing the beam deflection used for integration optical systems, etc, and the other for realizing 1-to-2 beam split and 1-to-3 beam split, used for optical interconnections, etc, are presented. The simulated results have shown that our method has advantages of good optimization potential, high convergence and is an attractive approach for the rigorous design of DOEs.

Abstract:We propose a rigorous electromagnetic design of two-dimensional and finite-aperture diffractive optical elements (DOEs) that employs an effective iterative optimization algorithm in conjunction with a rigorous electromagnetic computational model: the finite-difference time-domain method. The iterative optimization process, the finite-difference time-domain method, and the angular spectrum propagation method are discussed in detail. Without any approximation based on the scalar theory, the algorithm can produce rigorous design results, both numerical and graphical, with fast convergence, reasonable computational cost, and good design quality. Using our iterative algorithm, we designed a diffractive cylindrical lens and a 1-to-2-beam fanner for normal-incidence TE-mode illumination, thus showing that the optimization algorithm is valid and competent for rigorously designing diffractive optical elements. Concerning the problem of fabrication, we also evaluated the performance of the DOE when the DOE profile is discrete. (C) 2003 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:An improved particle swarm optimization method is proposed for the design of ultra-thin diffractive optical elements (DOEs) enabling multicolour beam shaping functionality. We employ pre-optimized initial structures and adaptive weight strategy in the algorithm to achieve better and identical shaping performance for multiple colours. Accordingly, a DOE for shaping light from green and blue LEDs has been designed and fabricated. Both experiment and numerical simulations have been conducted and the results agree well with each other. 15.66% average root mean square error (RMSE) and 0.22% RMSE difference are achieved. In addition, the parameters closely related to the performance of the optimization are analysed, which can provide insights for future application designs.

Abstract:The wavelength-division multiplexing technique can be utilized in visible light communication to increase the channel capacity when a multicolor mixed white LED is used as light source. In such an application, the illumination area of LEDs should be invariant to the incident wavelength, so as to decrease interference within the adjacent regions. Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) can be used in the optical transmitter system to shape the diffraction patterns into polygons. However, traditional DOEs illuminated by a multicolor mixed white LED would result into diffraction patterns with unequal sizes. In this paper, a hybrid algorithm which combines particle swarm optimization with a genetic algorithm is proposed for multicolor oriented DOEs design. A DOE is designed and fabricated for blue and red LEDs, and experimental results show that diffraction patterns with rather good uniformity as well as quasi-equal size for red and blue LEDs are obtained.
Multifunctional Double-Layered Diffractive Optical Element

Abstract:We propose a novel multifunctional double-layered diffractive optical element (DOE) based on the fractional Talbot effect. This DOE consists of two layers: one is the encoding layer, in which multiple sub-DOEs, i.e., multiple optical functions, are encoded; the other is the decoding layer, which is a properly designed Talbot illuminator. This DOE can perform each of the multiple optical functions one by one by shifting the encoding layer. Experimental results demonstrate that this method is efficient. This device should be highly interesting for integrated optics, optical interconnection, secure optical storage, and dynamic optical fiber communications.

Abstract:Diffractive optical element (DOE) can be used for beam transform to obtain a certain required focused spot. The phase design of the DOE can be considered as an optimization problem and can be optimized by many kinds of algorithms. In optimization, the intensities of the sampling points are optimized to be consistent with the required beam transform, but the other points are not consistent with such demand. In this paper, fine design of the DOE is completed with a new sampling interval on the focal plane. The simulated results show that the intensity of any point on the focal plane is fully filled with the required beam transform, besides the used sampling points in the optimization.

Abstract:An iterative vector-based optimization algorithm is presented for the design of diffractive optical elements (DOEs) with subwavelength structures as a beam focusing deflector. The DOEs with subwavelength structures, have the ability for monolithic integration and can require only single step fabrication, but the subwavelength and aperiodic nature of the DOEs prevent the use of scalar diffraction theory and the use of coupled-wave theory. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method as the electromagnetic computational model and the iterative plane wave spectrum algorithm (IPWSA) as the optimization algorithm, which can make the design of DOEs in reasonable time frames,have been applied for designing DOEs. The IPWSA, the FDTD method, the plane wave spectrum propagation method and the Farn method are discussed. By using the iterative algorithm, a beam deflector with subwavelengh structures was designed for normal incidence TE mode illumination, which has shown that the optimization algorithm is valid and competent for rigorously designing diffractive optical elements.

Abstract:An improved algorithm for diffractive optical element (DOE) with high imaging quality is proposed in this paper. The algorithm is designed based on amplitude division between signal and noise regions, further subdivides the noise region into two distinct parts. The image quality in the signal region will be effectively improved by employing a partition-constraint strategy, which imposes amplitude freedom on the first noise region while enforcing strict amplitude constraints on the second noise region. The principle of the algorithm, simulation analysis and experimental results are presented. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the algorithm is feasible.

Abstract:Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) have widespread applications in optics, ranging from point spread function engineering to holographic display. Conventionally, DOE design relies on Cartesian simulation grids, resulting in square features in the final design. Unfortunately, Cartesian grids provide an anisotropic sampling of the plane, and the resulting square features can be challenging to fabricate with high fidelity using methods such as photolithography. To address these limitations, we explore the use of hexagonal grids as a new grid structure for DOE design and fabrication. In this study, we demonstrate wave propagation simulation using an efficient hexagonal coordinate system and compare simulation accuracy with the standard Cartesian sampling scheme. Additionally, we have implemented algorithms for the inverse DOE design. The resulting hexagonal DOEs, encoded with wavefront information for holograms, are fabricated and experimentally compared to their Cartesian counterparts. Our findings indicate that employing hexagonal grids enhances holographic imaging quality. The exploration of new grid structures holds significant potential for advancing optical technology across various domains, including imaging, microscopy, photography, lighting, and virtual reality.

Abstract:Fast optimization algorithms of the design of diffractive optical elements (DOEs) for beam shaping are often based on fast Fourier transform (FFT), and the demand of the sampling theorem must be met when FFT is used to calculate the light intensity. Limited by the fabricating technology, the pixel size of a DOE cannot be too small. For beam shaping in Fresnel diffraction domain, given that the sampling interval of a DOE is fixed, if the diffraction distance is too short, all FFT algorithms would not meet the demand of the sampling theorem, and then the results of beam shaping would become worse. In this paper, the disadvantages of the FFT algorithms in near Fresnel diffraction domain are discussed, and an area division method is proposed for the DOEs design. The simulation and experimental results show the validity of the proposed area division method.

Abstract:An approach, used to fabricate diffractive optical elements (DOEs), is presented by applying reduction projecting system based on digital micro-mirror device (DMD)([1][2]) and digital mask technique([3]) The accumulation of exposure energy can be obtained through modulating rotating velocity of mask graphics, and finally distribution of exposure, which is required, can be achieved. It shows that the method is Practical and feasible on the grounds of the results of MATLAB simulation and experiments. The fabricated DOE has the same structure as the Fresnel lens. The method avoids the mechanical alignment error and mismachining tolerance, and improves efficiency of DOEs fabrication, in addition, it can low the manufacture cost.

Abstract:To achieve a cellular network in visible light communication, the illumination areas covered by red, green, and blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) forming a white LED should be of the same size with uniform intensity distribution. In this paper, the iterative algorithm for the design of multicolor-oriented two-dimensional diffractive optical elements (DOEs) is improved. Simulation results indicate that almost the same size of the diffraction patterns of the DOE illuminated by multicolor LEDs is achieved with good uniformity of the intensity distribution.

Abstract:With the rapid development of computer hardware and the emergence of the parallel calculation of diffraction fields, a breakthrough has been made in terms of the limitation of the unacceptable amount of computational cost to design diffractive optical elements (DOEs), and more accurate global search algorithms can be introduced to the design of complex DOEs and holographic projections instead of traditional iterative algorithms. In this paper, a hybrid algorithm which combines particle swarm optimization (PSO) with a simulated annealing (SA) algorithm is proposed for the designing of DOEs and projecting holographic images with less noise. PSO is used to reduce the invalid disturbance in SA, and SA can jump out from local extreme points to find the global extreme points. Compared with the traditional Gerchberg–Saxton (GS) algorithm, the simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed SA–PSO hybrid algorithm can improve uniformity by more than 10%.

Abstract:An iterative optimization-based synthesis algorithm has been presented for the design of diffractive micro-optical elements (DMOE's) with subwavelength structures as beam controllers. The DMOE's with subwavelength structures only require single step fabrication, but the subwavelength and aperiodic nature of the DMOE's prevent the use of scalar diffraction theory and the use of coupled-wave theory.
