Abstract:The Fe macrosegregation during casting and the limited sample size of the traditional powder metallurgy methods are challenges for the application of Cu-Fe composite. In this work, a powder rolling strategy is developed to fabricate fully dense Cu-10Fe billet by consolidating pure Cu and Fe powders. This method can solve the above problems. The microstructure evolution at different processing stages was characterized in detail by scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The Fe macrosegregation was avoided and good metallurgical bonding quality between powders was achieved after cold rolling. Ordered clusters were formed in the Fe phase, and three different types of Fe precipitates were found in the Cu matrix. The formation mechanisms of ordered structure and precipitates were analyzed. The variation of mechanical and electrical properties with aging process was discussed.
Attaining Exceptional Electrical Conductivity in Cu-Fe Composite by Powder Rolling Strategy

Abstract:The application of immiscible Cu-Fe composite was limited due to the severe Fe macrosegregation and low electrical conductivity. In this work, bulk Cu-10Fe composite was prepared by powder rolling strategy and further cold rolled to foils. The composition distribution, microstructure evolution, electrical property and me-chanical property were studied. The mutual diffusion of Cu and Fe elements are well controlled during the powder rolling process, such that the good electrical conductivity of the Cu matrix is retained. The Fe particles distribute homogeneously in the Cu matrix, eliminating the Fe macrosegregation phenomenon during the casting process. The Cu-10Fe composite possesses tensile strength of 507 MPa and electrical conductivity of 80.1% IACS. Strengthening mechanisms and origins of exceptional electrical properties were discussed.

Abstract:Electroless plating is an effective method to prepare various metal/ceramic compounds, which can get a high mixing homogeneity and improved metal/ceramic interface bond in metal matrix composites(MMCs) reinforced by ceramic. The characteristics of sintering densification of Cu/Al_2O_(3p) composites were investigated. The influences of powder preparation, pressing pressure, sintering temperature, soaking time and repressing-resintering on the densification were studied. On the basis of optimizing parameters, the relative density of Cu/nano-Al_2O_(3p) with norminal content of 10% Al_2O_3(mass fraction) can reach 94% via conventional powder metallurgy.

Abstract:Fe-Ni alloys possess a range of excellent properties that are closely related to their composition, making them widely used in microelectronics, precision components, and electrocatalysis. Electrodeposition is a primary method for preparing Fe-Ni alloys. The codeposition process of Fe and Ni exhibits a characteristic preferential Fe deposition, resulting in a higher Fe/Ni atom ratio in the deposits than the Fe/Ni ion ratio in the electrolyte, which is categorized as anomalous codeposition. This paper reviews research findings on the mechanisms behind this anomalous codeposition, focusing on chemical reaction equilibrium and electrode kinetics. Key aspects include the hydrogen evolution side reaction, changes in near-surface pH, concentration profiles of main ion species near the cathode, and the competitive adsorption behavior of metal intermediate species. Additionally, the preparation and process parameters affecting alloy composition and underlying mechanisms are discussed. This comprehensive review aims to enhance understanding and control of the anomalous codeposition in Fe-Ni alloys, offering insights into the electrodeposition of other iron-group metals and expanding perspectives on metal electrodeposition.

Abstract:Al/Fe bimetals prepared by a compound casting method, combining the excellent properties of both the Al alloy and the ductile cast iron, exhibit great potential for application in achieving engine weight reduction. However, the problem of insufficient interfacial bonding ability because of the difference in thermophysical properties of Al and Fe is particularly prominent. Therefore, in this work, the electrodeposited Cu coating on the surface of the Fe matrix was used as the interlayer of Al/Fe bimetal fabricated by coupling hot-dipping with compound casting to solve the above problem. The effect of Cu interlayer thickness on the interfacial microstructure and shear strength of bimetal was investigated. The experimental results showed that the shear strength up to 77.65 MPa in regard to Al/Fe bimetal with a 5 μm Cu interlayer was obtained. No Cu element was detected at the interface of bimetal regardless of the thickness of the Cu interlayer. The diffusion behavior of the Cu atom at the interface and the influence of the Cu layer at the atomic scale on diffusion reaction and the Al/Fe interface were further revealed by combining first-principle and molecular dynamics calculations. The simulation results revealed that the Cu layer gradually dissolved into an Al alloy at 750 °C, thereby promoting the diffusion reaction of the Al/Fe interface. Meanwhile, the protective role of the Cu layer against oxidation on the surface of the Fe matrix was confirmed. As a result, the interfacial bonding performance was enhanced when the Cu interlayer was introduced.

Abstract:Fe/Cu composite samples with Cu particles depositing on carbonyl iron sheets were prepared by chemical plating. Cu additions were uniformly distributed on the grain boundaries of the flaky carbonyl iron while keeping the internal structure of iron. Meanwhile, we found that the chemical plating time made a key point on both the microwave absorbing properties and infrared emissivity. With the growth of chemical plating time, the value of reflection loss gives a linear decrease and the infrared emissivity is reduced with a tendency of index reduction. When the plating time is less than 30min, the reflection loss of the samples maintains above −20GHz, moreover, prolonging the plating time more than 30min, the infrared emissivity of the samples is reduced to 0.50 or less. It can be concluded that both the microwave absorbing and infrared properties are excellent at the optimal plating time of 30min.

Abstract:Based on the concept of green design and development, FeS/Cu–Bi lead-free copper matrix composites were prepared by using FeS and Bi powder as lubricating phase to replace the lead in CuPb alloy. Surface modification of FeS powder by electroless plating and mechanical alloying of mixed powder by high-energy ball milling are effective strategies for preparing lead-free copper matrix composites. The effects of surface modification and mechanical alloying on the mechanical and tribological properties of the materials are studied. Results show that electroless nickel plating improves the mechanical locking and metallurgical bonding between mixed powder particles; enhances the interface bonding between FeS particles and copper matrix; and increases the hardness, impact toughness, and crushing strength by 29.7%, 19.4%, and 13%, respectively. The density and hardness of the composite prepared by electroless nickel plating combined with mechanical alloying increases by 11.4% and 40.6%, respectively, average friction coefficient decreases from 0.44 to 0.28, and wear rate decreases by 62%. Electroless plating and mechanical alloying reduce the microploughing and material transfer on the worn surface of the composites, and the abrasive wear and adhesive wear are remarkably improved.

Abstract:Electrodeposited copper is a very critical technology for 3D interconnection structure to ensure the stability of signal transmission in IC package substrate. However, Cu(I) produces during long-term electrodeposition and has an obvious adverse effect on the surface microstructure and brightness of electrodeposited copper. In this paper, Fe(III) was introduced into the electrodeposited copper system to solve the negative effect of Cu(I) on the electrodeposited copper layer and improve the surface performance of copper layer. The galvanostatic measurement (GM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and polarization curves were used to explore the effect of Cu(I) and Fe(III) on the electrochemical behaviors of the electrolyte system. Simultaneously, the surface microscopic characterization and brightness of the copper layers were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), camera, diffraction of x-rays (XRD), and 3D confocal laser microscope (3D-CLM). Finally, the results showed that Fe(III) improved the surface microstructure, recovered brightness of copper layer, and restored the ratio of the copper crystal planes (200) and (220).

Abstract:In the Letter, we demonstrate an improved electroless plating method for the synthesis of bimetallic shell particles. The procedure involves a combination of surface reaction, seeding growth, and removal of supporting cores. We modified ammonical AgNO3 in ethanol with a controlled amount of HCHO in the seeding process and a uniform and relatively dense coverage of silver nanoparticle seeds on colloid cores was achieved. Following the second kind of metal plating, we extended this method to prepare continuous bimetallic core-shell and hollow particles with a submicrometer diameter. The morphologies of the bimetallic Cu/Ag and Pt/Ag particles were studied with transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and their crystallinity and chemical composition were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The prepared materials may be of applied value in areas such as catalysis, optics, and plasmonics.

Abstract:Traditional casting preparation of Cu-Fe alloy is difficult, especially when Fe content is relatively high, because there is a metastable immiscible region of liquid components between copper (Cu) and iron (Fe), which causes serious compositional segregation in Cu-Fe alloys and leads to low strength and undesirable electrical conductivity of the alloys. In this study, Cu-50Fe alloy was fabricated by chemical co-precipitation and powder metallurgy. Cu-Fe mixed powders prepared by chemical co-precipitation have an average particle size of about 3.5 μm and a near-spherical shape. Copper and iron phases in the fabricated alloy intertwine with each other. After cold deformation, copper and iron phases are elongated along the cold deformation direction to form strips. During aging treatment, a number of Fe particles with diameter of 10–50 nm precipitate in Cu phases in the alloy. The tensile strength and electrical conductivity of the deformed and aged Cu-50Fe alloy are 651 MPa and 41.5%IACS, respectively.

Abstract:Spherical copper powders and cobalt-modified copper powders were electroless plated with silver, respectively, to obtain two kinds of silver-plated copper powders. The composite powders were analysed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry. Effects of cobalt modification on surface morphology, silver reduction rate, particle size and anti-oxidisation resistance of composite powders were studied. The results indicate that surface morphology of silver-coated copper powders prepared by cobalt-modified copper powders was affected by cobalt, but the size, mass and the percent reduction of silver were significantly increased under the same conditions of electroless plating silver. And silver-coated copper powders prepared by cobalt-modified copper powders have better anti-oxidisation resistance than silver-coated copper powders prepared by copper powders.

The emphasis is laid on the types and the fabricating techniques of reinforced particle phase. The latest development shows nano - ceramic can improved the mechanical property of copper alloy. It is proposed such nano - ceramics produced by mechanical alloy or in - situ reaction have the best effect. Reaction spray deposition (RSD) , liquid in-situ reaction and mechanical alloy (MA) have better application outlook at produce Cu - based composites reinforced by particles.

Abstract:Electroless copper plating of insulating substrates typically requires the pre-deposition of Pd/Sn catalyst layer onto the surface to initiate the chemical reactions; Accordingly, it’s high-profile process to achieve efficient Pd/Sn cluster adhesion and good copper plating performance. This paper showed copper thickness and dimple hole depth of the electroless plating were affected by chemicals following different activation times. The composition, microstructure, size and roughness evolution were characterized using Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). The structural studies revealed that copper particle size depends not only on the size and coverage of the Pd/Sn cluster, but also on the degree of activation of the chemicals. In order to make deposition copper more compact and uniform to decrease dimple hole depth, dummy boards are generally used to enhance the potion activity before electroless copper plating. This paper will provide chemical activity and plating efficiency relationship to avoid poor activity impact plating quality and process event.

Abstract:Series of bimetallic systems were prepared by replacement reactions and characterized by XRD and XPS. The results suggest that the ad-metals are monolayer dispersed on the surface of sub-metal in Pd(Pt, Cu)/Co(Ni) systems, while in Pd(Pt, Au)/Cu systems surface solid solution is formed. In Ag(Au)/Co(Ni) and Ag/Cu systems no interaction between the metals is observed just as in the simple mixture of the respective crystallites. The outermost electronic configurations, the atomic radius of the metals, and the low-preparation temperature seem to be important factors for the different states of these bimetallic catalysts.
Highly Dispersed Cu Produced by Mechanical Stress-Activated Redox Reaction to Establish Galvanic Corrosion in Fe Implant

Abstract:Fe has immense potential for biodegradable orthopedic applications, but it degrades slowly in the physiological environment. Inducing galvanic couple by alloying Cu to Fe using ball milling is a promising approach. However, the ductile nature of Cu leads to the cold welding of a large amount of Cu powder during ball milling, which makes it difficult to disperse uniformly in the Fe matrix. Here, a Fe-CuO implant with highly dispersed Cu particles in the matrix was developed by shift-speed ball milling and selective laser melting. Specifically, copper oxide (CuO) particles were selected as precursors and dispersed in Fe powders by ball milling since they were brittle and would not be cold-welded during ball milling. After further milling in higher energy, it was found that CuO particles reacted with Fe and generated Cu particles through a stress-activated redox reaction. Subsequently, the obtained powders were prepared into a Fe-CuO implant using selective laser melting. Microstructure examination revealed that the Cu phases in the implant were dispersed evenly in the Fe matrix, which was considered to establish a large number of galvanic couples and aggravated the galvanic corrosion tendency. Electrochemical tests indicated that the implant had improved performance in degradation behavior in terms of high corrosion current density (22.4 μA/cm2), low corrosion resistance (1319 Ω cm2), and good degradation stability. In addition, it presented antibacterial effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus by diffusion mechanisms with killing rates of 90.7 and 96.7%, respectively, as well as good cytocompatibility.

The effects of the concentration of ligand, reducing agent, pH value, temperature of plating bath and plating time on the deposition rate, and structure and morphology of the films have been studied. A practical electroless plating solution has been developed.

Abstract:The addition of a secondary metal (such as Cu, Co, Ni and Pd) to form iron-based bimetallic particles could enhance the reactivity of zero valent iron (ZVI). This study proposed a new synthesis method for preparing Cu-Fe bimetals (Cu-Febm (CuSO4)) by ball milling mZVI and CuSO4. During ball-milling process, 40% of Cu2+ can be reduced to Cu0, which formed galvanic couple with Fe0 in a way of Fe/Cu alloy structure. Part Cu2+ was only reduced to Cu+ (corresponding to Cu2O), while 29% of SO42- was reduced to Sx2- (corresponding to FeSx). The appearance of Cu2O was not conducive to the activity of Cu-Febm (CuSO4) particles, the formation of Fe0/FeSx structure compensated for the partial loss of Fe/Cu alloy. H•abs was identified as the main active species for TCE degradation by Cu-Febm (CuSO4) bimetals. The Cu-Febm (CuSO4) bimetals has great potential for the removal of chlorinated hydrocarbons in water.

Abstract:Pt-based alloys have recently triggered a lot of attentions due to their important potential industrial applications. They provide great opportunities for the development of low-cost and high-performance fuel-cell catalysts. Many studies have already pointed out the excellent physico-chemical properties of Pt-based alloys, intimately related to their internal structure. Great efforts have been spent to characterize shape, homogeneity, dispersion, alloying extent and kinetic growth of Pt-based nano-particles. Here, we present Cu-Pt bimetallic nano-particles synthesized by the thermal decomposition method under oleylamine and OE coordination. HRTEM images show that Cu-Pt nanostructures having size of about 1.2 nm includes about 35 atoms capped by the surfactant with OA. Accurate structural information of this system has been obtained by XRD and XAFS. A charge transfer mechanism has been observed and Pt occupied Cu sites in these Cu-Pt nanoparticles.

Abstract:The electroplating behavior of Zn, Fe and Zn–Fe alloy onto copper from light acid chloride solutions (LACS, pH 3.07 containing H3BO3, Na2C6H5O7·2H2O and different amounts of Zn2+ and Fe2+) was investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry and the steady-state polarization technique. It was found that, in the experimental conditions, during the Zn–Fe alloy formation no underpotential deposition (upd) was observed, and the deposition of Zn–Fe followed the mechanism of three-dimensional (3-D) nucleation and subsequent grain growth. The Zn2+ ions in the electrolyte inhibit the deposition of Fe, while Fe2+ ions promote the deposition of Zn. It was also found experimentally that the co-deposition of Zn and Fe behaved anomalously, and the result was interpreted theoretically in the light of quantum chemistry.
