Abstract:Mechanical properties of bulk nanocrystalline metals are summarized and compared with those of coarse-crystalline metals in terms of elastic and anelastic hardness, strength, tensile and compressive plasticity ,fracture toughness,creep,superplasticity,fatigue,wear,etc. The intrinsic and extrinsic factors which affect the mechanical behaviour are analyzed. Deformation mechanisms in bulk nanocrystalline metals are also discussed.

Abstract:Engineering nanostructures in metallic materials such as nanograins and nanotwins can promote plastic performance significantly. Nano/ultrafine-grained metals embedded in coarse grains called bimodal metals and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals have been proved to possess extensively improved yield strength whilst keeping good ductility. This paper will present an experimental study on nanostructured stainless steel prepared by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) with surface impacts of lower strain rate (10 s−1–103 s−1) and higher strain rate (104 s−1–105 s−1). Microstructure transition has been observed from the original γ-austenite coarse grains to α′-martensite nanograins with bimodal grain size distribution for lower strain rates to nanotwins in the ultrafine/coarse grained austenite phase for higher strain rates. Meanwhile, we will further address the mechanism-based plastic models to describe the yield strength, strain hardening and ductility in nanostructured metals with bimodal grain size distribution and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals. The proposed theoretical models can comprehensively describe the plastic deformation in these two kinds of nanostructured metals and excellent agreement is achieved between the numerical and experimental results. These models can be utilized to optimize the strength and ductility in nanostructured metals by controlling the size and distribution of nanostructures.

Abstract:In this paper the latest research progress in the three dimensional bulk nanocrystalline materials is smumarized. Both the ordinary preparation methods and novel fabrication techniques for bulk nanocrystalline materials are overviewed. A comprehensive comparison is made between these synthesis methods,with respective advantages and disadvantages and the corresponding applied materials system being pointed out. The various property perfor-mances of three dimensional bulk nanocrystalline materials are presented. Finally,the future research direction and the prospect of potential applications for the three dimensional bulk nanocrystalline materials are proposed.

Abstract:A new nano-fabrication system based on AFM is presented. Using this system,a sophisticated pattern can be obtained on the surface of Al_2O_3,getting the pattem from a picture by software to control the precise steps of the cantilever and the tip. The no-linear aberration of piezo-tube is corrected by software of this system.In the experiment, structure of nano-scale is obtained, and more sophisticated nano elements can be obtained in further research.

Abstract:The nanostructures and nanodevices special fabrication technology including electron beam lithography (EBL), focused ion beam (FIB) technology, microcontact printing (μCP) and nanoimprinting were introduced in this paper. The examples of Y-shape waveguide coupler and high precision nanopattern of China Seal were designed and fabricated based the EBL and FIB technology respectively. Their structures can be characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning tunnel microscopy (STM) and atom force microscopy (AFM) etc. The C60 molecular on a Si (111)-(7×7) surface in variable temperature is deposited and detected by STM. The fabricated pattern and structures results indicated that the novel fabrication and characterization technology is very important and effective tools in nanoscale science field.

Abstract:With the development of nano fabrication techniques,nano structure devices will be the basis of the next generation integrated circuits.We report process of Si quantum wire and dot based on EBL and RIE processes and process of nano structure metal gate based on EBL,electron beam evaporation and lift off techniques.Single electron transistors (SETs) on p type SIMOX substrates were also fabricated based on the processes.Coulomb blockade and single electron tunneling are observed in the SETs.

Abstract:Rare earth fluorides nanometerials became one of the popular research subjects in recent years because they were extensively used in the fields of optical devices,display,biolabeling,optical crystals,etc.owing to their unique optical,electrical and magnetic properties.Recently,many methods,such as precipitation,microemulsion,hydrothermal and solvothermal,sol-gel,microwave,ultrasonic,precursors thermal decomposition,and electrospinning technique were successfully employed to fabricate rare earth fluorides nanometerials with nanoparticles,nanowires,nanofilms,polyhedron nanocrystals,hybrid-structured nanocrystals and core-shell nanomaterials,etc.In this paper,the advancements of the above fabrication methods were summarized,and the advantages and disadvantages of these methods were discussed.Moreover,combining with our work on the preparation of rare earth fluorides nanomaterials,the development trends of fabrication methods for rare earth fluorides nanomaterials were also proposed.

Abstract:Ultrafine nanostructures(feature size 5 nm) have been successfully fabricated with single-nanometre precision using the strong irradiation damage effect of convergent electron beam in a 300 kV high-resolution transmission electron microscope.This approach can be widely applied to inorganic solid-state materials from insulators,semiconductors to metals.The feature size can be precisely controlled by the probe size and the irradiation time.Our approach is promising in design and fabrication of ultrafine nanostructures and nanodevices.

Abstract:Although a variety of nanoparticles with better-than-bulk material performances can be synthesized, it remains a challenge to scale the extraordinary properties of individual nanoscale units to the macroscopic level for bulk nanostructured materials. Here, we report a general and scalable biosynthesis strategy that involves simultaneous growth of cellulose nanofibrils through microbial fermentation and co-deposition of various kinds of nanoscale building blocks（NBBs） through aerosol feeding on solid culture substrates. We employ this biosynthesis strategy to assemble a wide range of NBBs into cellulose nanofibril-based bulk nanocomposites. In particular, the biosynthesized carbon nanotubes/bacterial cellulose nanocomposites that consist of integrated 3D cellulose nanofibril networks simultaneously achieve an extremely high mechanical strength and electrical conductivity, and thus exhibit outstanding performance as high-strength lightweight electromagnetic interference shielding materials. The biosynthesis approach represents a general and efficient strategy for large-scale production of functional bulk nanocomposites with enhanced performances for practical applications. Industrial-scale production of these bulk nanocomposite materials for practical applications can be expected in the near future.

While these new materials offer record-high strength, their ductility is often inadequat. This article reviews recent progress in tailoring the nanostructure to achieve coexisting high strength and high ductility at room temperature. The focus is on a summary of the strategies currently being pursued as well as the outstanding issues that await future research.
