Abstract:This review reports the progress on the recent development of micro direct methanol fuel cell. Various functional components including micro flow field plate, membrane electrode assembly, proton exchange membrane, catalytic layer, diffusion layer, and collector are narrated and discussed. The supplies management and packaging technology are also illustrated and discussed. A variety of portable devices whose power is supplied by micro direct methanol fuel cell are analyzed and discussed. This paper will provide an expedient and valuable reference to those who intend to research micro direct methanol fuel cell. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. This work reviews μDMFC mainly in some important aspects including functional components, reagents management, packaging technology and application. The functional components are categorized into six subcategories as micro flow field plate, membrane electrode assembly, proton exchange membrane, catalytic layer, diffusion layer and collector. At last, the conclusion and a helpful outlook are made.

Abstract:This paper reviews recent investigation achievements on the direct dimethyl ether fuel cell(DDFC) with great business prospects.This review mainly discusses the development of new anode catalysts for dimethyl ether(DME) electrooxidation,the performance optimization of different membrane electrode assemblies(MEAs) structure and the effects of different operation conditions.Besides in-depth on the present research,it is proposed that using the alkaline anolyte saturated DME as fuel and making peroxide hydrogen as alternative oxidant will further improve fuel cell performance.

Abstract:Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are known as the most promising green power source, have acknowledged special superiorities and already obtained primary effects on commercialization. In this article, based on membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which is the key component of a DMFC, the preparation and optimization progress of catalyst, proton exchange membrane (PEM), the preparation of MEA, as well as the current reseach situation of activation technology for MEA are detailed combined with our experimental work. The process of multi-step activation, the method of MEA regeneration and the test technology of the current fraction of CO2 are presented and the catalyst nucleation mechanism, PEM mass transfer mechanism and the benefit of methanol penetrating are discussed, as well. Moreover, future work is forecasted. Based on the macromolecule polymer molding theory, a new thought is proposed in this paper that the catalyst slurry is directly sprayed on PEM to form the three-dimensional network structure, which will realize the gradient catalysis functionality and improve the preparation of catalyst layer of MEA. Finally, this article also describes the flow field design, performance testing and system control and other aspects of research status.

Abstract:Methanol steam reforming can convert methanol solution into hydrogen rich steam, which can be used to supply for the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The carbon monoxide (CO) in the produced hydrogen rich steam will be poison to the PEMFC and limits the application of this technic. This study develops a new methanol fuel processing system (MFPS) with incorporated methanol steam reforming and CO selective methanation modules for production of hydrogen rich steam with a low concentration of CO, and used to directly supply for the PEMFC. The core component of the MFPS is a highly layer-packed microreactor, wherein methanol steam reforming, methanol combustion, and CO selective methanation reactions can occur. For the developed MFPS, an optimized methanol supply strategy is proposed to startup the MFPS, the fastest startup time is about 15.8 minutes. Experimental tests showed that the MFPS can be continuously operated for more than 100 hours with CO concentration below 10 ppm. The produced hydrogen rich steam was directly supplied for a PEMFC to generate 100 W electricity. Results obtained in this study demonstrated that the developed MFPS can produce CO-free hydrogen rich stream for the supply of PEMFC, the generated electricity can be used to power mobile device and/or electronics.

Abstract:<p>Passive micro direct methanol fuel cell (μDMFC) which operates based on fuel diffusion is preferred for portable applications for its structural simplicity. In this work, we have systematically investigated multiple variables including the hot-press conditions, current collector channel patterns, current collector open ratios, and their effects on the performance for passive μDMFC by experiments and simulations. Results indicate that vertical stripe pattern (VSP) is preferred for both anodes and cathodes due to the upward reaction products drift by natural convection. Open ratio of 45.6% and 35.8% are found to yield the best performance for anode and cathode, respectively. In addition, the external environmental conditions of vibration frequency, cell orientation, environmental temperature and atmospheric pressure are all discussed in detail in this work. The optimized fabrication, assembly and operation parameters shed light on the design considerations necessary for the wide adaptation of high-performance and durable passive μDMFC for portable applications.</p>

Recent Progress in Anode Catalysts of Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

Abstract:It was mainly reviewed that the recent research progress in anode catalysts of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) in three categories: (1) Pt-based anode catalysts, (2) composite catalysts with conducting polymers as a carrier;(3) catalysts with nitrogen-containing-large-ring coordinate compounds. The effect of anode catalysts on cell performance was discussed by briefly describing the methanol carossover problem, its influence and possible solutions in DMFC. It is demonstrated that the composition of alloy, type of carrier, and large ring coordinate compounds are directly linked to activity and stability of anode catalysts. Significant researches were carried out in methanol oxidation in DMFC, the mechanism of methanol oxidation at surface of anode catalysts,but, no common agreement is reached so far. In addition, the synthesis of highly disperse anode catalysts by new methods becomes an important research direction. To improve DMFC performance by optimizing anode catalysts, it is desirably to minimize and ultimately eliminate the methanol crossover problems.

Abstract:Direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC) as a liquid type fuel cell is promising for portable applications. In this study, we report our recent progress in the micro-fuel cell development. A power density of 80mWcm−2 was achieved in passive mode at ambient conditions when using the anode containing nickel, carbon-supported Pd catalyst and Nafion ionomer. Current efficiency was also found to be greatly increased due to the use of Nafion rather than polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Based on improvements on single cell performance, planar multi-cell power modules were assembled to study the feasibility of making high-performance and practical DBFC power units. A power of 2.5W was achieved in a fully passive eight-cell module after significantly simplifying cell structure.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is an electrochemical device with clean energy,low pollution and high efficiency. The PEMFC history and its present RD status in the world are introduced. Especially the three key parts of the PEMFC system including proton exchange membranes, electro catalysts and membrane electrodes are discussed, referring to their general requirement and manufacture techniques. The merits and demerits of the recent developed perfluorosulfonic acid proton exchange membrane are also compared. Finally, PEMFC applications in novel automobiles are listed and its problems with it for the future study are pointed out. As a matter of fact, PEMFC is a promising technique and can be expected to be commercially applied in electric automobiles firstly.

Abstract:Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs) have been a focus of attention as an ideal energy source in liquid fuel cells. However, its commercial application has been constrained by challenges such as the difficulty in diminishing costs by the utilization of noble metals as electrode catalysts, the poisoning of catalysts, and the sluggish kinetics of anodic methanol oxidation reactions (MOR). With the advancement of photocatalysis technology, the incorporation of semiconductors into the anodes material design of DMFCs has led to the generation of photo-assisted direct methanol fuel cells (PDMFCs), which can partially alleviate the above issues. Currently, researchers have designed the photocatalysts for PDMFCs from various perspectives and have constructed some specific PDMFCs that are suitable for practical applications. However, there is no systematic summary of applications of semiconductors-based anode in methanol catalytic oxidation and PDMFCs so far. In this review, the functional mechanisms of methanol catalytic oxidation on semiconductor/noble metal-based anodes in PDMFCs are discussed. In addition, from the design and construction of semiconductor/noble metal-based anodes and the current status of PDMFCs research, the current development of PDMFCs is elaborated in detail. Finally, the challenges faced are summarized and opinions on unsolved issues are presented.

Abstract:Direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) appears to be one of the most promising systems of various fuel cells, due to their simple structure, high energy density, easy transportation and environment friendly. The activity and stability of the anode and cathode catalysts determine the performance and stability of DMFC. Platinum (Pt) has the highest activity toward both anodic and cathodic reactions. However, the low abundance and high cost of commercial platinum catalyst hinder the widespread application of DMFC. Therefore, developing non-platinum catalysts is of great significance to the wide application of DMFC. Although researchers have made great progress in non-platinum catalysts research in recent years, the activity and stability of non-platinum catalysts still need further improvement to meet the requirements of commercial application. In this review article, the research progresses anode and cathode catalysts for direct methanol fuel cell in recent years are summarized. The development of the Pt-based and Pt-free anode and cathode catalysts of DMFC is described in detail, respectively. Besides, the synergistic effect from strong interaction between Pt-based catalyst and catalyst supports is also discussed. Finally, the further development in the anode and cathode catalysts of DMFC is expected.

Abstract:A silicon-based air-breathing micro direct methanol fuel cell (μDMFC) with an active area of 13 mm × 11 mm has been developed for portable application. The prototype features unique cathode structures fabricated by low-cost MEMS technologies and a reliable assembly method by using PDMS and holders. I–V performance curves with different anode flow rates, methanol concentrations and operating temperatures have been obtained. The results show that this μDMFC has generated a maximum power density of 2.31 mW cm−2 using 1 M methanol solution at room temperature, which is comparable with our previous active μDMFCs. It has also been demonstrated that temperature is a critical experimental determinant of μDMFC performance. So thermal management may play a very important role in future μDMFC performance.

Abstract:The progress and recent status of the electro-catalysts used in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) was reviewed from the viewpoint of the development of anode catalyst and cathode catalyst.The mechanism for electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol was briefly summarized. It was demonstrated that not only the Pt-based binary or ternary alloys,but also electronically conducting mixed oxides could be used as anode catalyst materials, meanwhile, the development in the new oxygen reduction and methanol inert electrocatalyst containing non-noble metal with high activity and selectivity should become an important direction for cathode catalyst research.
Effect of the Microporous Layer Structure and Hydrophobicity on the Performance of Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

Abstract:Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) have drawn special attention for their portability and fewer safety concerns because of the use of liquid fuels. The microporous layers (MPLs) play an important role in improving the performance of DMFCs, especially at high current density. In this work, polypyrrole nanowire networks grown on carbon paper by in-situ electrochemical polymerization are used as cathode MPL. The hydrophobicity of the MPL is tuned by changing the amount of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). With the optimized structure and hydrophobicity of the MPL, the peak power density of the DMFC is 102 m W cm-2, which is 24% higher than that of the DMFC with traditional MPL consisted of carbon black.

Abstract:The fuel efficiency, an urgent issue, in fuel cell commercializatory is related to the energy density in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC). Improved fuel delivering systems are needed to improve fuel utilization and the system energy density. The key system component and strategies oriented to DMFC were summarized in detail. The methanol sensor and system control devices were analyzed to improve system efficiency. Fuel cell-based electrochemical sensors show promise with pulse-feed methods and hybrid/battery modes used to accommodate different load modes. The passive fuel supply mode, in which the driving force is based on the chemical potential, is suitable for self-breathing fuel cell stacks, and will reduce the start-up time by means of the self-heating/ no-load method.

Abstract:The work in this paper incorporated printed circuit board (PCB) technology into micro-direct methanol fuel cells (µDMFCs) and conjectured and verified the performance degradation factors of PCB current collectors in µDMFCs by testing different designed configuration µDMFCs. The experiment results showed that all kinds of PCB coating can benefit from the porous stainless-steel plates covering to a great extent. At the end of 48 h discharging, µDMFCs with porous stainless-steel plates between MEA and PCB coating achieved higher performance than those of the direct contacting series. It can be inferred from various types of experimental data that because of stainless-steel porous plate isolating, the impact of corrosion on the surface of the PCB electrode plate was reduced to a certain extent. The corrosion of the electrode plate was slowed down in the µDMFC discharging as a result of the passivation behavior on the iron surface and a decrease in corrosion current. Consequently, the attenuation of the PCB performance was delayed. The conclusion of this work explores a practical direction to enhance the cost-effectiveness of fuel cells, promoting the large-scale application of DMFCs in the future.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel thermally autonomous reformed methanol fuel cell (RMFC) system for highly efficient hydrogen production and power generation by integrating a self-heating methanol steam reforming (MSR) microreactor and a high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC). The RMFC system would exhibit significant potential for portable use due to its high energy efficiency, compact size and long lifetime. The structural design of the RMFC system including MSR microreactor and HT-PEMFC are studied, and a work flow is developed to enable the startup and stable power output of the system. After that, the microreactor and HTPEMFC are fabricated, and then integrated to develop the system. Experimental testing results showed that the microreactor can produce a maximum reformate gas of 541 ml/min with a methanol conversion larger than 93.8 %., while maintaining the carbon monoxide concentration below 2 %. The RMFC system can start up within 17 min, the temperature fluctuation is lower than 6.28 % and the maximum output power can reach up to 32.9 W. As for a conservatively designed rating power of 25 W, the calculated energy conversion efficiency of the system can reach about 28.5 %, with good stability during long-term operations.

Abstract:Fuel cells are the most clean and efficient power source for vehicles. In particular, proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are the most promising candidate for automobile applications due to their rapid start-up and low-temperature operation. Through extensive global research efforts in the latest decade, the performance of PEMFCs, including energy efficiency, volumetric and mass power density, and low temperature startup ability, have achieved significant breakthroughs. In 2014, fuel cell powered vehicles were introduced into the market by several prominent vehicle companies. However, the low durability and high cost of PEMFC systems are still the main obstacles for large-scale industrialization of this technology. The key materials and components used in PEMFCs greatly affect their durability and cost. In this review, the technical progress of key materials and components for PEMFCs has been summarized and critically discussed, including topics such as the membrane, catalyst layer, gas diffusion layer, and bipolar plate. The development of high-durability processing technologies is also introduced. Finally, this review is concluded with personal perspectives on the future research directions of this area.
