Abstract:Alkaline fuel cell technology has been reinvigorated since the recent rapid development and deployment of anion exchange membranes. Without the "acid-stability" requirement in low pH environments such as that of proton exchange membrane fuel cells, a much wider range of materials including noble metals, non-noble transition metals, and even metal-free electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media have been developed due to both thermodynamic and kinetic reasons. As compared to the rapidly increasing number of reports on the development of novel catalyst materials, the understanding of the reaction mechanisms of the various ORR electrocatalysts is quite insufficient, and the application and investigation in real alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AAEMFCs) is even scarcer. By reviewing the compositions, preparation methods, physiochemical properties and ORR performance of different categories of cathodic electrocatalysts that have emerged in the past few years, some common and intrinsic properties and factors that account for the superior activity of these materials may be extracted and summarized, which may further help to identify the reasons for the kinetic facility of the ORR in alkaline media. Some practical issues of utilization of the promising novel replacement materials for the state-of-the-art Pt-based cathodic electrocatalysts in AAEMFCs are pointed out. In addition to the progress on the development of novel materials with outstanding ORR activity, many and varied compositions and morphologies in one, two and three dimensions, scalable preparation technologies, low cost, and other unique properties, some feedback on the performance and especially the problems of their use as cathodes in AAEMFCs is urgently needed. Such feedback should provide guidelines for the design and manufacture of next-generation electrocatalysts and accelerate the application of AAEMFCs. (C) 2015 The Electrochemical Society. Abstract:This paper reviews recent investigation achievements on the direct dimethyl ether fuel cell(DDFC) with great business prospects.This review mainly discusses the development of new anode catalysts for dimethyl ether(DME) electrooxidation,the performance optimization of different membrane electrode assemblies(MEAs) structure and the effects of different operation conditions.Besides in-depth on the present research,it is proposed that using the alkaline anolyte saturated DME as fuel and making peroxide hydrogen as alternative oxidant will further improve fuel cell performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore nanoporous PtPdAlCu (np-PtPdAlCu) quaternary alloy through ball-milling with the subsequent two-step dealloying strategy. The microstructure and catalytic performance of the np-PtPdAlCu catalyst have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electrochemical measurements. The np-PtPdAlCu catalyst exhibits an open bi-continuous interpenetrating ligament/channel structure with a length scale of 2.3 +/- 0.5 nm. The np-PtPdAlCu catalyst shows 2 and 3.5 times enhancement in the mass activity and area specific activity towards methanol oxidation at anode respectively, compared to the Johnson Matthey (JM) Pt/C (40 wt.%) catalyst. Moreover, the CO stripping peak of np-PtPdAlCu is 0.49 V (vs. SCE), indicating a 180 mV negative shift in comparison with the Pt/C catalyst (0.67 V vs. SCE). In addition, the np-PtPdAlCu catalyst also shows an enhanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity at cathode compared to Pt/C. The present study provides a facile and effective route to design high-performance catalysts for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) appears to be one of the most promising systems of various fuel cells, due to their simple structure, high energy density, easy transportation and environment friendly. The activity and stability of the anode and cathode catalysts determine the performance and stability of DMFC. Platinum (Pt) has the highest activity toward both anodic and cathodic reactions. However, the low abundance and high cost of commercial platinum catalyst hinder the widespread application of DMFC. Therefore, developing non-platinum catalysts is of great significance to the wide application of DMFC. Although researchers have made great progress in non-platinum catalysts research in recent years, the activity and stability of non-platinum catalysts still need further improvement to meet the requirements of commercial application. In this review article, the research progresses anode and cathode catalysts for direct methanol fuel cell in recent years are summarized. The development of the Pt-based and Pt-free anode and cathode catalysts of DMFC is described in detail, respectively. Besides, the synergistic effect from strong interaction between Pt-based catalyst and catalyst supports is also discussed. Finally, the further development in the anode and cathode catalysts of DMFC is expected.

Abstract:It was mainly reviewed that the recent research progress in anode catalysts of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) in three categories: (1) Pt-based anode catalysts, (2) composite catalysts with conducting polymers as a carrier;(3) catalysts with nitrogen-containing-large-ring coordinate compounds. The effect of anode catalysts on cell performance was discussed by briefly describing the methanol carossover problem, its influence and possible solutions in DMFC. It is demonstrated that the composition of alloy, type of carrier, and large ring coordinate compounds are directly linked to activity and stability of anode catalysts. Significant researches were carried out in methanol oxidation in DMFC, the mechanism of methanol oxidation at surface of anode catalysts,but, no common agreement is reached so far. In addition, the synthesis of highly disperse anode catalysts by new methods becomes an important research direction. To improve DMFC performance by optimizing anode catalysts, it is desirably to minimize and ultimately eliminate the methanol crossover problems.

Abstract:The recent development in research on cathodic catalysts for direct methanol fuel cells(DMFC) is(reviewed).At present,the cathodic catalyst used in DMFC is usually Pt.Its main problems are low electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction and performance degradation due to methanol penetrating through the proton exchange membrane.The addition of Cr,Ni,heteropolyacids,or(porphyrin) and phthalocyanion of the transition metals to the Pt catalyst can increase not only the electrocatalytic activity of the Pt for the oxygen reduction,but also the methanol tolerance of the Pt.Therefore,these Pt-based composite catalysts are in prospect of being used as the cathodic catalyst in DMFC.

Abstract:The electrooxidation behavior of dimethyl ether (DME) dissolved in acidic, neutral or alkaline anolyte has been studied. The cyclic voltammetry measurements reveal that DME in alkaline anolyte demonstrates higher electrooxidation reactivity than that in acidic or neutral anolyte. With increasing the NaOH concentration in the anolyte, the electrooxidation reactivity of DME can be further improved. Direct dimethyl ether fuel cells (DDFCs) are assembled by using Nafion membrane as the electrolyte, Pt/C as the cathode catalyst, and Pt–Ru/C as the anode catalyst. It is found that the use of alkaline anolyte can significantly improve the performance of DDFCs. A maximum power density of 60mWcm−2 has been achieved when operating the DDFC at 80°C under ambient pressure.

Abstract:The progress and recent status of the electro-catalysts used in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) was reviewed from the viewpoint of the development of anode catalyst and cathode catalyst.The mechanism for electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol was briefly summarized. It was demonstrated that not only the Pt-based binary or ternary alloys,but also electronically conducting mixed oxides could be used as anode catalyst materials, meanwhile, the development in the new oxygen reduction and methanol inert electrocatalyst containing non-noble metal with high activity and selectivity should become an important direction for cathode catalyst research.

Abstract:The study on direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) has lasted around 70 years since its first investigation in the early 1950s. Though enormous effort has been devoted in this field, it is still far from commercialization. The methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) as a semi‐reaction of DMFCs is the bottleneck reaction that restricts the overall performance of DMFCs. To date, there are intense debates on the complex 6‐electron reaction, but barely any reviews have systematically discussed this topic. To this end, we summarized the controversies and progress regarding the electrocatalytic mechanisms, performance evaluations as well as the design science toward MOR electrocatalysts. This review also provides a comprehensive introduction on the recent development of emerging MOR electrocatalysts with a focus on the innovation of the alloy, core‐shell structure, heterostructure and single‐atom catalysts. Abstract:Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are among the most promising portable power supplies because of their unique advantages, including high energy density/mobility of liquid fuels, low working temperature, and low emission of pollutants. Various metal-based anode catalysts have been extensively studied and utilized for the essential methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) due to their superior electrocatalytic performance. At present, especially with the rapid advance of nanotechnology, enormous efforts have been exerted to further enhance the catalytic performance and minimize the use of precious metals. Constructing multicomponent metal-based nanocatalysts with precisely designed structures can achieve this goal by providing highly tunable compositional and structural characteristics, which is promising for the modification and optimization of their related electrochemical properties. The recent advances of metal-based electrocatalytic materials with rationally designed nanostructures and chemistries for MOR in DMFCs are highlighted and summarized herein. The effects of the well-defined nanoarchitectures on the improved electrochemical properties of the catalysts are illustrated. Finally, conclusive perspectives are provided on the opportunities and challenges for further refining the nanostructure of metal-based catalysts and improving electrocatalytic performance, as well as the commercial viability.

Abstract:As the proton exchange membrane direct methanol fuel cell (PEMDMFC) faces sustaining obstacles, alkaline membrane direct methanol fuel cell (AMDMFC) is attracting increasing attention. Although some advantages may be expected, the feasibility of AMDMFC does not seem well verified. In this paper, thermodynamic disadvantages and kinetic advantages of AMDMFC are elucidated. In thermodynamic aspect, a large voltage loss due to the pH difference across the membrane is predicted by theoretical calculation; in kinetic aspect, besides the well-known superiority of alkaline media for oxygen reduction, experimental data show much higher anodic performance in carbonate/bicarbonate than in acid. In-situ FTIR measurements indicate that methanol can be fully oxidized to carbon dioxide in carbonate/bicarbonate as in sulfuric acid. Taking into account all the foreseeable advantageous and disadvantageous factors, AMDMFC is worth study, and an alkaline membrane stable at elevated temperatures is the prerequisite for a successful AMDMFC.

Abstract:Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are known as the most promising green power source, have acknowledged special superiorities and already obtained primary effects on commercialization. In this article, based on membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which is the key component of a DMFC, the preparation and optimization progress of catalyst, proton exchange membrane (PEM), the preparation of MEA, as well as the current reseach situation of activation technology for MEA are detailed combined with our experimental work. The process of multi-step activation, the method of MEA regeneration and the test technology of the current fraction of CO2 are presented and the catalyst nucleation mechanism, PEM mass transfer mechanism and the benefit of methanol penetrating are discussed, as well. Moreover, future work is forecasted. Based on the macromolecule polymer molding theory, a new thought is proposed in this paper that the catalyst slurry is directly sprayed on PEM to form the three-dimensional network structure, which will realize the gradient catalysis functionality and improve the preparation of catalyst layer of MEA. Finally, this article also describes the flow field design, performance testing and system control and other aspects of research status.

Abstract:With the increasing consumption of fossil fuels, there is an urgent need to develop new green and clean energy. Fuel cells have been extensively studied as a clean alternative to fossil fuels. As a green energy source, direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) have high energy density, but its commercialization is restricted by poor stability and slow kinetics of methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). One of the key strategies to address these problems is to develop efficient, economical and green catalysts for energy storage and conversion devices. So far, the use of Pt-based electrocatalysts to enhance the oxidation process of CH3OH is very extensive. However, since Pt-based electrocatalysts are limited by high cost and susceptibility to CO poisoning, these have prompted researchers to search for a cost-effective, highly catalytic activity and durable catalytic material. In recent years, Co-based spinel oxide have been found to have good potential as fuel cell electrode materials, they can be modified by defect engineering, alloying and heteroatom doping, or more active sites can be exposed by morphology regulation or carrier regulation, so as to improve their electrocatalytic performance. This review provides a comprehensive introduction on the recent development of Co-based spinel electrocatalysts for emerging MOR involved in DMFC, and the future development of low cost and high performance Co-based spinel oxide catalytic materials is prospected.

Abstract:Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs) have been a focus of attention as an ideal energy source in liquid fuel cells. However, its commercial application has been constrained by challenges such as the difficulty in diminishing costs by the utilization of noble metals as electrode catalysts, the poisoning of catalysts, and the sluggish kinetics of anodic methanol oxidation reactions (MOR). With the advancement of photocatalysis technology, the incorporation of semiconductors into the anodes material design of DMFCs has led to the generation of photo-assisted direct methanol fuel cells (PDMFCs), which can partially alleviate the above issues. Currently, researchers have designed the photocatalysts for PDMFCs from various perspectives and have constructed some specific PDMFCs that are suitable for practical applications. However, there is no systematic summary of applications of semiconductors-based anode in methanol catalytic oxidation and PDMFCs so far. In this review, the functional mechanisms of methanol catalytic oxidation on semiconductor/noble metal-based anodes in PDMFCs are discussed. In addition, from the design and construction of semiconductor/noble metal-based anodes and the current status of PDMFCs research, the current development of PDMFCs is elaborated in detail. Finally, the challenges faced are summarized and opinions on unsolved issues are presented.

Abstract:Alkaline fuel cells suggest solution for the problems of low methanol oxidation kinetics and methanol crossover, which are limiting the development of direct methanol fuel cells. In this work, a novel anion exchange membrane, quaternized poly(aryl ether oxadiazole), was prepared through polycondensation, grafting and quaternization. The ionic conductivity of as-synthesized anion exchange membrane can reach up to 2.79 x 10(-2) S/cm at 70 degrees C. The physical and chemical stability of the anion exchange membranes could also meet the requirement for alkaline direct methanol fuel cells. Copyright (C) 2011, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Abstract:The rapid progress of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and alkaline exchange membrane fuel cells (AMFCs) has boosted the hydrogen economy concept via diverse energy applications in the past decades. For a holistic understanding of the development status of PEMFCs and AMFCs, recent advancements in electrocatalyst design and catalyst layer optimization, along with cell performance in terms of activity and durability in PEMFCs and AMFCs, are summarized here. The activity, stability, and fuel cell performance of different types of electrocatalysts for both oxygen reduction reaction and hydrogen oxidation reaction are discussed and compared. Research directions on the further development of active, stable, and low-cost electrocatalysts to meet the ultimate commercialization of PEMFCs and AMFCs are also discussed.
