Abstract:In this paper,the basic principle of the GFX centrifugal classifiers for fly ash,the computational model of the particle motion in classifiers,and the designing process of the classifiers are presented.The GFX centrifugal classifier was developed by improving the Buell centrifugal classifier of American GE company.Up to now,the GFX centrifugal classifiers have been applied in more than 100 power plant in our country.Great economic and societal benefit has obtained.

Abstract:Ore resources in the mining process form a large number of unmanageable tailings, mostly inhalable fine mineral particles, into the environment will cause serious pollution, and recycling is a precious resource. The cyclone classification provides the possibility for the recovery and exploitation of fine particles, but the recovery and utilization rate of conventional cyclone separation is seriously low, and the performance urgently should be optimized. In the present study, a new type of volute feed was proposed to strengthen the classification and recovery process of fine mineral particles. Combined with numerical simulation and experimental research, the effects of various structural parameters and operating parameters on the flow field distribution, particle motion, and classification performance were systematically examined. The obtained results reveal that the new volute feed structure can effectively reduce the internal turbulence and improve the flow field stability and particle classification efficiency. Compared with the traditional hydrocyclone, the classification efficiency of fine particles with new feed structure increases by 10-18%. Increasing underflow diameter and feed pressure and reducing overflow diameter and feed concentration are also beneficial to lessening classification particle size and enhancing classification performance. The currently achieved outcomes can provide valuable guidelines for further development of novel hydrocyclones.

Abstract:In this study, the influence of air inlet layout on the flow field distribution and particle movement trajectory for the vertical turbo air classifier are analyzed comparatively using the numerical simulation method. The air inlet layout adjustment can increase the axial velocity and turbulent dissipation rate at the feeding inlet and do not generate the axial negative velocity, which improves powder material pneumatic transportation and dispersion capacity; the air inlet layout adjustment can match the airflow rotation direction with the rotation direction of the rotor cage, which can eliminate the vortices in the rotor cage channel effectively. Moreover, the particle movement time is shortened and fast classification is completed, which can decrease the particle agglomeration probability and weaken the ‘fish-hook’ effect. The optimization scheme of the air inlet layout is Type-BC. In accordance with the numerical simulation results, the calcium carbonate classification experimental results indicate that the classification performance of the classifier is improved using Type-BC.

Abstract:Based on the analysis to the principle of the pneumatic classification for the powder materials,a new type of centrifugal pneumatic classifier for urea product has been developed.A new technological process of classification has been also proposed for the industrial application.The experimental results show that the new classifier combined with the new process can reach a satisfactory efficiency in the classification of urea product in a large scale of capacity.

Abstract:A new horizontal turbo air classifier equipped with two inclined air inlets has been introduced. The flow field and classification performance of the classifier have been investigated using CFD method and response surface methodology (RSM). Simulation results show that the flow field is composed of the primary swirling flow and the secondary upward washing air, and the uniformly distributed swirling flow occupies the classifying chamber. The tangential gas velocity reaches the maximum value on the outer surface of the rotor cage, generating strong centrifugal force for the particle classification. The discrete phase model (DPM) can predict the cut sizes, but cannot present the fish-hook phenomenon. The desirable experimental condition by targeting the cut size of 20 μm and minimizing the classifying accuracy index is, rotor speed of 1373.6 rpm, primary air volume flow rate of 261.8 m3/h and secondary air volume flow rate of 42.4 m3/h. The corresponding fine and coarse fraction loss are less than 1.42% and 7.24%, respectively. This study provides a new strategy to design the horizontal turbo air classifier.

Abstract:Ultrafine particle classification can be realized using hydrocyclones with novel structures to overcome the limitations of conventional hydrocyclones with tangential inlets or cone structures. Herein, the hydrocyclones with different inlet structures and cone angles were investigated for classifying ultrafine particles. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed using the Eulerian-Eulerian method, and ultrafine MnO2 powder was used as a case study. The simulation results show a fine particle (≤5 μm) removal efficiency of 0.89 and coarse particle (>5 μm) recovery efficiency of 0.99 for a hydrocyclone design combining an arc inlet and a 30° cone angle under a solid concentration of 2.5 wt %. Dynamic analysis indicated that the novel arc inlet provided a preclassification effect to reduce the misplacement of fine/coarse particles, which cannot be provided by conventional tangential or involute inlets. Furthermore, the proposed design afforded comprehensive improvement in the flow field by regulating the residence time and radial acceleration. Subsequently, a novel hydrocyclone with an arc inlet and 30° cone angle was manufactured using the three-dimensional (3D) printing technology. Experiments were conducted for classifying ultrafine MnO2 particles using the novel 3D-printed hydrocyclone and conventional hydrocyclone. The results demonstrate that the classification performance of the 3D-printed hydrocyclone was superior to that of the conventional one, in particular, the removal efficiency of fine particles from 0.719 to 0.930 using a 10 wt % feed slurry.

Abstract:Numerical simulation of liquid-solid two-phase flow was used to analyze the flow of the fluid in the classification chamber of ultrafine powder centrifugal classifier. Under the condition of the steady state, in order to study the influence of different blade angles on the classification performance, Eulerian multiphase flow model, RNG k-epsilon turbulence model and multiple reference frame (MRF) method were used to analyze the velocity distribution of the fluid in the classification chamber. On this basis, under the condition of the unsteady state, in order to study the influence of different classification wheel rotate speed on the cut size, the discrete phase model (DPM) was used to analyze the rule of particle track in the classification chamber. The results indicate that: when the blade angle is 15 similar to 30 degrees, the classification performance is the best; When the blade angle is 30 degrees, the cut size is close to 1 mu m when the classification wheel speed is 1000rpm; The cut size is close to 0.5 mu m when the classification wheel speed is 2000rpm; The cut size is smaller than 0.5 mu m when the classification wheel speed is 3000rpm. The simulation results well agree with the experimental results.

Abstract:A novel hydrocyclone with arc inlet and convex cone is proposed to obtain the higher particles classification sharpness than the conventional design. The classification of the micron scale manganese dioxide particle is taken as a study case, and various methods are used to perform the modelling and optimization of the novel geometrical structure. Two performance indexes have been taken into consideration in the multi-objective optimization which are the classification sharpness, S-s and total pressure drop, Delta P. The numerical experiments designed via response surface methodology are carried out using computation fluid dynamics simulations of Eulerian-Eulerian strategy. The obtained data sets are utilized for modelling the performance indexes by support vector machine (SVM) and radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) approaches. The optimal structure with the classification sharpness of 0.956 is searched using the genetic algorithm (GA) in contrast to the conventional design of 0.849. Flow field analysis illustrates that the extended radial space, strengthened centrifugal field and inlet pre-classification effect of the optimal design improve the classification sharpness. However, the narrower inlet cross area leads to a higher pressure drop. The Pareto front of the multi-objective optimization is obtained using the NSGA-II algorithm to provide alternatives for the optimal performance of the novel hydrocyclone. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Classification Performance of Model Coal Mill Classifiers with Swirling and Non-Swirling Inlets

Abstract:The classification performance of model coal mill classifiers with different bottom incoming flow inlets was experimentally and numerically studied. The flow field adjacent to two neighboring impeller blades was measured using the particle image velocimetry technique. The results showed that the flow field adjacent to two neighboring blades with the swirling inlet was significantly different from that with the non-swirling inlet. With the swirling inlet, there was a vortex located between two neighboring blades, while with the non-swirling inlet, the vortex was attached to the blade tip. The vorticity of the vortex with the non-swirling inlet was much lower than that with the swirling inlet. The classifier with the non-swirling inlet demonstrated a larger cut size than that with the swirling inlet when the impeller was stationary (similar to 0 r.min(-1)). As the impeller rotational speed increased, the cut size of the cases with non-swirling and swirling inlets both decreased, and the one with the non-swirling inlet decreased more dramatically. The values of the cut size of the two classifiers were close to each other at a high impeller rotational speed (>= 120 r.min(-1)). The overall separation efficiency of the classifier with the non-swirling inlet was lower than that with the swirling inlet, and monotonically increased as the impeller rotational speed increased. With the swirling inlet, the overall separation efficiency first increased with the impeller rotational speed and then decreased when the rotational speed was above 120 r.min(-1), and the variation trend of the separation efficiency was more moderate. As the initial particle concentration increased, the cut sizes of both swirling and non-swirling inlet cases decreased first and then barely changed. At a low initial particle concentration (<0.04 kg.m(-3)), the classifier with the swirling inlet had a larger cut size than that with the non-swirling inlet. Abstract:The paper proposes a design of a static multi-vortex classifier for the fractionation of fine silica gel particles. The principle of operation of the multi-vortex classifier is described. The work studies the effect of the design of the static multi-vortex classifier on the efficiency of fractionation of silica gel particles. We propose to constructively supplement the apparatus with curved annular plates that prevent the repeated entrainment of separated particles from the apparatus by swirling flows in the inter-tube space. We carry out numerical calculations to determine the classification characteristics of the developed classifier in the Ansys Fluent software package. Three-dimensional models of the developed classifiers are presented. During the research, the particle size and the velocity of the gas suspension at the entrance to the classifier change. The results of the research show that a static multi-vortex classifier with high efficiency allows fractionating particles with boundary grain sizes of 35, 45, 55, and 75 μm. Pressure losses in the static multi-vortex classifier without plates range from 128 to 2111 Pa at a speed at the entrance to the apparatus from 4 to 16 m/s. The installation of two and three plates in the inter-tube space of the classifier changes the pressure drop from 131 to 2230 Pa and from 141 to 2230 Pa, respectively, at an input speed from 4 to 16 m/s.

Abstract:The cylindrical hydrocyclone is widely used for coarse particle classification to suppress the misplaced fine particles in the underflow. Nevertheless, the unique flat bottom structure generates particle circulation flow, causing the misplacement of coarse particles in the overflow. A multi-stage cylindrical hydrocyclone is designed to regulate the particle circulation flow by shortening the particle radial settling distance. The particle circulation flow and classification performance of the cylindrical hydrocyclone and multi-stage cylindrical hydrocyclone are investigated by numerical simulations and physical tests. The numerical test results demonstrate that the multi-stage cylindrical hydrocyclone strengthens the circulation flow of 59.5 μm particles and 89 μm particles, and limits the circulation flow of 150 μm particles, increasing the enrichment ratio of 59.5 μm particles and 89 μm particles, reducing the enrichment ratio of 150 μm particles. The experimental results indicate that the multi-stage cylindrical hydrocyclone suppresses particle misplacement in the overflow and underflow with superior classification efficiency, sharper separation accuracy, smaller cut size, and higher solids yields.

Abstract:With the development of powder metallurgy industry, the fine-metal-powder classification becomes one of the vital techniques in powder technology. A pneumatic classifier without screen and mechanical moving parts is designed and developed. Theoretical analysis and experiments of Pneumatic-Classification was conducted. The oversize ratio in fine powder can be reduced to less than 5% and the undersize ratio in coarse powder less than 15% when the air flow is suitable. The classification effect is satisfactory for the customers.

Abstract:The Dynamic-Stationary van combined Variable Classifier (DSVC) applied in Nanjing CHP and its technical characteristics, design and operation performance are introduced. The relative curve between fineness and rotating velocity is addressed. It can be shown in results of the tests that DSVC can regulate fineness well, reduce coarse particle that is a major contributor to unburned carbon loss, increase pulverizer capacity and decrease pulverizer power.
Studies on characteristics of size distribution and heavy metal content distribution of superfine particles from coal-fired boiler

Abstract:A seven-stage impact dust classifiers was used to sample fine particulates of fly ash in the entrance and exit of a cyclone dust catcher. The aerodynamic diameters of sampled fly ash ranged from 1.3 mum to 14.7mum. The experimental results showed that in the exit of the cyclone dust catcher, the mass radios of PM2.5 and PM10 in total fly ash were 82.8% and 26.5% respectively. It demonstrated that the mass ratios had increased markedly in contrast to those of the dust catcher entrance. The efficiency of dust catcher was low for fine fly ash, which could be illustrated by the collection efficiencies of PM2.5 and PM10 being 3% and 47.3% respectively. Furthermore, the heavy metal contents of Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Ni and Cr in the sampled fly ash were determined by AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry). Consequently, we reached a preliminary conclusion of enrichment principle of some hazardous heavy metal contents in fine particulates.

Abstract:The application of stationary-moving van combined type rotating classifier in Nanjing Cogeneration Power Plant ,its tech-nical characteristics,design and operation performance are briefed,and the relational curve between pulverized coal fineness and ro-tating speed of rotor is given.The testing results show that the regulating performance of pulverized coal fineness of such type classifi-er is good,the uniformity of pulverized coal at the exit of classifier is excellent ,with the unburned coal content in fly ash of boiler reduced,the maximum output of coal pulverizing system increased and electricity consumption of coal pulverizing decreased.

Abstract:In this study, the gas−particle flow field in a real-size industrial-scale micron air classifier manufactured by Phenikaa Group using 3D transient simulations with the FWC-RSM–DPM (Four-Way Coupling-Reynold Stress Model-Discrete Phase Model) in ANSYS Fluent 2022 R2 and with the assistance of High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems is explored. A comparison among three coupling models is carried out, highlighting the significant influence of the interactions between solid and gas phases on the flow field. The complex two-phase flow, characterized by the formation of multiple vortices with different sizes, positions, and rotation directions, is successfully captured on the real-size model of the classifier. Additionally, analyzing the effects of the vortices on the flow field provides a comprehensive understanding of the gas–solid flow field and the classification mechanism. The effect of the outlet mass airflow rate is also investigated. The classifier's Key Performance Indicators (KPIs: d50, K, η, ΔP) and the constrained condition of the particle size distribution curve of the final product are used to evaluate the classification efficiency. The contributions of this work are as follows: (i) a simulation analysis of a real-size industrial-scale classifier is conducted that highlights its advantages over a lab-scale one; (ii) a comparison is conducted among three coupling models, showing the advancement of four-way coupling in providing accurate results for simulations of interactions between the gas phase and particles; and (iii) the particle size distribution curve performances of a classified product under different simulation models and outlet airflow rates are addressed, from which optimal parameters can be selected in the design and operation processes to achieve the required efficiency of an air classifier.

The method was successfully applied to design fly ash classification systems in a number of power plants in China, which shows its good applicability and effectiveness.

Abstract:The particle classifiers with three rotary cages have significant advantage in powder handling capacity. The flow field inside the classifiers were investigated from the perspective of vortex using Q criterion. Formation process and distribution of the vortices were intuitively exhibited. Structure of the guide cone was further optimized, and the classifying performance of the classifiers was evaluated. The results show that complex vortex structures were formed inside the classifier. The large-scale columnar vortex under the guide cone oscillates irregularly. This unwanted vortex is eliminated by extending the guide cone. The structure of the guide cone has little effect on the cut size, but the optimized guide cone with the long cylinder and cone significantly enhances the separation degree of the fine and coarse particles. The classifier obtains finer silica powder with a median size of 2.5 μm and higher Newton efficiency about 71.5%.
