Abstract:A new horizontal turbo air classifier equipped with two inclined air inlets has been introduced. The flow field and classification performance of the classifier have been investigated using CFD method and response surface methodology (RSM). Simulation results show that the flow field is composed of the primary swirling flow and the secondary upward washing air, and the uniformly distributed swirling flow occupies the classifying chamber. The tangential gas velocity reaches the maximum value on the outer surface of the rotor cage, generating strong centrifugal force for the particle classification. The discrete phase model (DPM) can predict the cut sizes, but cannot present the fish-hook phenomenon. The desirable experimental condition by targeting the cut size of 20 μm and minimizing the classifying accuracy index is, rotor speed of 1373.6 rpm, primary air volume flow rate of 261.8 m3/h and secondary air volume flow rate of 42.4 m3/h. The corresponding fine and coarse fraction loss are less than 1.42% and 7.24%, respectively. This study provides a new strategy to design the horizontal turbo air classifier.

Abstract:Numerical simulation of liquid-solid two-phase flow was used to analyze the flow of the fluid in the classification chamber of ultrafine powder centrifugal classifier. Under the condition of the steady state, in order to study the influence of different blade angles on the classification performance, Eulerian multiphase flow model, RNG k-epsilon turbulence model and multiple reference frame (MRF) method were used to analyze the velocity distribution of the fluid in the classification chamber. On this basis, under the condition of the unsteady state, in order to study the influence of different classification wheel rotate speed on the cut size, the discrete phase model (DPM) was used to analyze the rule of particle track in the classification chamber. The results indicate that: when the blade angle is 15 similar to 30 degrees, the classification performance is the best; When the blade angle is 30 degrees, the cut size is close to 1 mu m when the classification wheel speed is 1000rpm; The cut size is close to 0.5 mu m when the classification wheel speed is 2000rpm; The cut size is smaller than 0.5 mu m when the classification wheel speed is 3000rpm. The simulation results well agree with the experimental results.

Abstract:The aim of this study was evaluating a micro gas cyclone performance with a body diameter of 10 mm to collect indoor fine particles. The design of a cyclone requires minimizing the pressure drop and maximizing the separation efficiency. Overall and grade efficiencies, pressure drops, and cut sizes have been investigated through a theoretical model, simulation, and experimental studies. The experimental part was conducted using an Electrical Low-Pressure Impactor (ELPI) device to measure particle concentration for flow rates of 10-13.3 (l/min). In order to study the pressure drop and velocity behavior for different flow rates, COMSOL software was utilized. The obtained results from experimental work have met the theoretical and simulation outcomes adequately. It has been confirmed by all the obtained results that by increasing the flow rate and subsequently inlet velocity, the particle collection efficiency and pressure drop increase while the cut size decreases. Abstract:Due to the rapid development of powder technology around the world, powder materials are being widely used in various fields, including metallurgy, the chemical industry, and petroleum. The turbo air classifier, as a powder production equipment, is one of the most important mechanical facilities in the industry today. In order to investigate the production efficiency of ultrafine powder and improve the classification performance in a turbo air classifier, two process parameters were optimized by analyzing the influence of the rotor cage speed and air velocity on the flow field. Numerical simulations using the ANSYS-Fluent Software, as well as material classification experiments, were implemented to verify the optimal process parameters. The simulation results provide many optimal process parameters. Several sets of the optimal process parameters were selected, and the product particle size distribution was used as the inspection index to conduct a material grading experiment. The experimental results demonstrate that the process parameters of the turbo air classifier with better classification efficiency for the products of barite and iron-ore powder were an 1800 rpm rotor cage speed and 8 m/s air inlet velocity. This research study provides theoretical guidance and engineering application value for air classifiers.

Abstract:In this study, the gas−particle flow field in a real-size industrial-scale micron air classifier manufactured by Phenikaa Group using 3D transient simulations with the FWC-RSM–DPM (Four-Way Coupling-Reynold Stress Model-Discrete Phase Model) in ANSYS Fluent 2022 R2 and with the assistance of High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems is explored. A comparison among three coupling models is carried out, highlighting the significant influence of the interactions between solid and gas phases on the flow field. The complex two-phase flow, characterized by the formation of multiple vortices with different sizes, positions, and rotation directions, is successfully captured on the real-size model of the classifier. Additionally, analyzing the effects of the vortices on the flow field provides a comprehensive understanding of the gas–solid flow field and the classification mechanism. The effect of the outlet mass airflow rate is also investigated. The classifier's Key Performance Indicators (KPIs: d50, K, η, ΔP) and the constrained condition of the particle size distribution curve of the final product are used to evaluate the classification efficiency. The contributions of this work are as follows: (i) a simulation analysis of a real-size industrial-scale classifier is conducted that highlights its advantages over a lab-scale one; (ii) a comparison is conducted among three coupling models, showing the advancement of four-way coupling in providing accurate results for simulations of interactions between the gas phase and particles; and (iii) the particle size distribution curve performances of a classified product under different simulation models and outlet airflow rates are addressed, from which optimal parameters can be selected in the design and operation processes to achieve the required efficiency of an air classifier.

Classification Performance of Model Coal Mill Classifiers with Swirling and Non-Swirling Inlets

Abstract:The classification performance of model coal mill classifiers with different bottom incoming flow inlets was experimentally and numerically studied. The flow field adjacent to two neighboring impeller blades was measured using the particle image velocimetry technique. The results showed that the flow field adjacent to two neighboring blades with the swirling inlet was significantly different from that with the non-swirling inlet. With the swirling inlet, there was a vortex located between two neighboring blades, while with the non-swirling inlet, the vortex was attached to the blade tip. The vorticity of the vortex with the non-swirling inlet was much lower than that with the swirling inlet. The classifier with the non-swirling inlet demonstrated a larger cut size than that with the swirling inlet when the impeller was stationary (similar to 0 r.min(-1)). As the impeller rotational speed increased, the cut size of the cases with non-swirling and swirling inlets both decreased, and the one with the non-swirling inlet decreased more dramatically. The values of the cut size of the two classifiers were close to each other at a high impeller rotational speed (>= 120 r.min(-1)). The overall separation efficiency of the classifier with the non-swirling inlet was lower than that with the swirling inlet, and monotonically increased as the impeller rotational speed increased. With the swirling inlet, the overall separation efficiency first increased with the impeller rotational speed and then decreased when the rotational speed was above 120 r.min(-1), and the variation trend of the separation efficiency was more moderate. As the initial particle concentration increased, the cut sizes of both swirling and non-swirling inlet cases decreased first and then barely changed. At a low initial particle concentration (<0.04 kg.m(-3)), the classifier with the swirling inlet had a larger cut size than that with the non-swirling inlet. Abstract:The particle classifiers with three rotary cages have significant advantage in powder handling capacity. The flow field inside the classifiers were investigated from the perspective of vortex using Q criterion. Formation process and distribution of the vortices were intuitively exhibited. Structure of the guide cone was further optimized, and the classifying performance of the classifiers was evaluated. The results show that complex vortex structures were formed inside the classifier. The large-scale columnar vortex under the guide cone oscillates irregularly. This unwanted vortex is eliminated by extending the guide cone. The structure of the guide cone has little effect on the cut size, but the optimized guide cone with the long cylinder and cone significantly enhances the separation degree of the fine and coarse particles. The classifier obtains finer silica powder with a median size of 2.5 μm and higher Newton efficiency about 71.5%.

Abstract:In this study, the influence of air inlet layout on the flow field distribution and particle movement trajectory for the vertical turbo air classifier are analyzed comparatively using the numerical simulation method. The air inlet layout adjustment can increase the axial velocity and turbulent dissipation rate at the feeding inlet and do not generate the axial negative velocity, which improves powder material pneumatic transportation and dispersion capacity; the air inlet layout adjustment can match the airflow rotation direction with the rotation direction of the rotor cage, which can eliminate the vortices in the rotor cage channel effectively. Moreover, the particle movement time is shortened and fast classification is completed, which can decrease the particle agglomeration probability and weaken the ‘fish-hook’ effect. The optimization scheme of the air inlet layout is Type-BC. In accordance with the numerical simulation results, the calcium carbonate classification experimental results indicate that the classification performance of the classifier is improved using Type-BC.

Abstract:A new dynamic air classifier was designed to address the problems of uneven material dispersion and high dust concentration in industrial applications of turbo air classifiers. This paper presents a study on the use of guide cones in the new dynamic air classifier. The ANSYS-Fluent 19.2 software was implemented to simulate the airflow in the dynamic air classifier, and the impact of the guide cone size on the flow field and classification performance of the dynamic air classifier was investigated. The simulation results indicated that with the increase in the guide cone height, the flow field distribution becomes reasonable and the velocity distributions become uniform. When the guide cone height is greater than twice the distance between the guide cone and the bottom of the rotor cage, there is no discernible change in the flow field distribution and classification efficiency. When the guide cone diameter is approximately 0.9 times the diameter of the rotor cage, the airflow pathline is more reasonable, and the flow field and velocity distributions are more uniform. An improper guide cone diameter and height will worsen the classification environment, resulting in a significant decline in classification performance. The material experimental and discrete phase simulation (DPM) showed that DPM can anticipate the changing trends of the cut size and classification accuracy. This study provides theoretical assistance for the structural design and optimization of an air classifier.

Abstract:Ore resources in the mining process form a large number of unmanageable tailings, mostly inhalable fine mineral particles, into the environment will cause serious pollution, and recycling is a precious resource. The cyclone classification provides the possibility for the recovery and exploitation of fine particles, but the recovery and utilization rate of conventional cyclone separation is seriously low, and the performance urgently should be optimized. In the present study, a new type of volute feed was proposed to strengthen the classification and recovery process of fine mineral particles. Combined with numerical simulation and experimental research, the effects of various structural parameters and operating parameters on the flow field distribution, particle motion, and classification performance were systematically examined. The obtained results reveal that the new volute feed structure can effectively reduce the internal turbulence and improve the flow field stability and particle classification efficiency. Compared with the traditional hydrocyclone, the classification efficiency of fine particles with new feed structure increases by 10-18%. Increasing underflow diameter and feed pressure and reducing overflow diameter and feed concentration are also beneficial to lessening classification particle size and enhancing classification performance. The currently achieved outcomes can provide valuable guidelines for further development of novel hydrocyclones.
Research and Optimization of Operating Parameters of a Rotor Classifier for Calcined Petroleum Coke

Abstract:This article explores the impact of operating parameters on the classification efficiency of a rotor classifier. Based on the experimental data of calcined petroleum coke classification, a single-factor experimental analysis is conducted to find the relationship between operating parameters and classification performance. The cut size becomes progressively smaller as the rotor speed and feeding speed increase, and progressively larger as the inlet air volume increases. Newton's classification efficiency and classification accuracy decreased with the increase in feeding speed. The range analysis of the orthogonal experiment shows that the rotor speed and inlet air volume have significant effects on the classification performance, but the effect of feed speed is relatively weak. In addition, the optimal combination of operating parameters is obtained by optimizing the operating parameters. Newton's classification efficiency under this combination is estimated, and the estimated value is 82%. The verification experiment reveals that the Newton's classification efficiency is 83.5%, which is close to the estimated value. Meanwhile, the classification accuracy is 0.626. This study provides theoretical guidance for the industrial production of calcined petroleum coke and accumulates basic experimental data for the development of air classifiers.

Abstract:The classifier is an essential tool for the development of contemporary engineering technology. The application of classifiers is to categorize mixed-sized particles into multi-stage uniform particle sizes. In current studies, the particles in the classifier obtain their initial velocity when feeding. The classification effect is impacted by the inability to precisely control the initial state of the particles. To solve this problem, a pusher feed classifier was designed in this study, and a numerical simulation was performed to investigate its flow field characteristics and classification performance using the RNG-DPM method. A pusher is utilized to achieve particle feeding without initial velocity and to precisely control the initial state of the particles in the classification flow field. A newly developed two-way air inlet structure is designed to provide a superimposed flow field and enable the five-stage classification. Our results show that this pusher feed classifier has the best classification effect when the vertical airflow velocity is 10 m/s and the horizontal airflow velocity is 3 m/s. Meanwhile, the classification size ratio (CSR) from outlet 1 to outlet 5 was 1.24, 0.55, 0.45, 0.39, and 0.15, respectively.

Abstract:With the development of powder metallurgy industry, the fine-metal-powder classification becomes one of the vital techniques in powder technology. A pneumatic classifier without screen and mechanical moving parts is designed and developed. Theoretical analysis and experiments of Pneumatic-Classification was conducted. The oversize ratio in fine powder can be reduced to less than 5% and the undersize ratio in coarse powder less than 15% when the air flow is suitable. The classification effect is satisfactory for the customers.

Abstract:Horizontal classifiers with multiple rotor cages have competitive advantages of larger process capacity and smaller cut size. This study represents the gas-solid simulation, performance evaluation and classification mechanism of a horizontal classifier with three rotor cages. The gas turbulence was modeled using the Reynolds stress model (RSM), and the particle flow was predicted by the dispersed phase model (DPM). More than fifty operating conditions were analyzed for the performance evaluation. A schematic map showing the gas-solid flow dynamics was constructed. It was found that three rotating gas screen are independently induced and evenly distributed around the rotor cages. The M-shaped axial and tangential velocities have strong shear and washing effect on the near-wall particle. The maximum particle residence time of the cut size can be hundreds of seconds. The experimental cut sizes range from 7.2 μm to 25.7 μm with high classifying sharpness index (>55%) and superfine particle yield (>71%).

Abstract:Ultra-fine particles are prone to agglomeration, limiting the preparation of ultra-fine powder. The aggregates' disaggregation mechanism is studied, and the proposal of improving the guide vane of a turbo air classifier is contributed to strengthen powder disaggregation based on CFD-DEM coupling and the novel local fluid domain extraction method. The results show the cylindrical tail of guide vane is conducive to the disaggregation, and the powder dispersion near the guide vane is improved. When the inlet air velocity v in is <18 m·s −1 , the cylindrical tail of guide vane can significantly improve the powder dispersion. When the cylinder diameter is larger than or equal to 2 mm, the effect of the increase of the cylinder diameter on powder dispersion is significant. However, the increase of cylinder diameter will lead to the increase of energy consumption, so the cylinder diameter should not be too large.
