Abstract:The first quantity measurement on gas-solid two-phase flow in the typical louver concentrator was made by using two-dimensional phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA) system. Gas-solid two-phase flow field features in this louver concentrator were obtained. By analyzing a number of experimental results, the gas-solid separation mechanism, and the namely concentration mechanism were discussed. The effect of gas-solid two-phase flow on the performance of louver concentrator was quantitative by explained.
A Study of the Effect of Blade Rotating Angles on the Performance of a Louver Concentrator

Abstract:By making use of a louver concentrator test system,a study was conducted of the effect of rotating angles of blades in five stages on the performance parameters of the concentrator (dense-thin air ratio R1,resistance loss coefficient D and average concentration rate R2).Through an analysis of test results of blades in various stages rotating at different angles,obtained was a change of the performance parameters caused by the variation of blade rotating angles.Regarding the rotating angles of blades in various stages,the operating condition corresponding to a maximal resistance coefficient was found to be one when all the blades in the fifth stage are rotating at 30 degrees.The operating condition featuring a maximal dense-thin air ratio was one in which the blades in the first to fourth stage are rotating at 30 degrees while the blades in the fifth stage at 20 degrees.The operating condition corresponding to a maximal concentration rate was one when all the blades in the fifth stage are rotating at 30 degrees.
Numerical simulation of louver fin surface flow and heat transfer and configuration optimization

Abstract:Performs the three-dimensional numerical simulation and optimization for louver fin with tube-diameter of 9mm for a conditioner in detail,and puts forward the optimized structure parameters.Comparison shows that the optimization results in a decreased pressure drop across the heat exchanger and an improved comprehensive performance factor(CPF) when the facing velocity ranges from 0.25 to 4 m/s,and the heat exchanger volume is reduced by about 33% under given heat transfer rate and slightly higher CPF.

Abstract:The study on gas-solid two phase flow of the louver coal concentrator( LCC) was carried out by numerical simulation using FLUENT software. It was shown that calculation results reliable by comparing with PDA experimental results. Furthermore,the gas-solid flow field of the LCC was investigated by numerical simulation under the condition of absent blade,and then the effects of the absent blades on performances of LCC were analyzed. The results show the performances of LCC were reduced when the lack of the last blade and penultimate blade. So the operation of LCC without the last blade or both of the last and penultimate blades should be avoided in practical applications of LCC.

Abstract:Experimental study on heat transfer and flow resistance of louver fins with 8 different structural parameters were carried out on a wind tunnel test rig.Influence of the fin length,pitch and height on heat transfer and flow resistance characteristic was compared and analyzed,in which both fin length and pitch have a strong influence on factors j and f,while fin height effects slightly.Simultaneously,factor 3j/f was used to evaluate the enhanced heat transfer effect of the 8 kinds of louver fins.Results show that fin length has the most obvious effect in enhancing heat transfer.Figs 6,table 1 and refs 10.

Abstract:Experimental study on heat transfer performance of multi-region louver fins with 7 different structural parameters was carried out on a performance of automobile air conditioner test facility.Influence of the fin surface's louver region on heat transfer and flow resistance characteristic was compared and analyzed,in which the louver regions have a strong influence on factors j and f.Simultaneously,the factor(j / f)1/3 was used to evaluate the enhanced heat transfer effect of the 7 kinds of louver regions fins.Results show that multi-region louver has the most obvious effect in enhancing heat transfer.

Abstract:The experimental and numerical studies were conducted for the flows in a straight plate diffuser of a centrifugal fan under three different operating conditions. The detailed 3D flow field in the straight plate diffuser was measured via laser Doppler velocimetry under different flow rates. Numerical simulations for the transient process were performed and compared with the corresponding experimental results. The time-averaged numerical velocities in the straight plate diffuser and its upstream passage agree quite well with the experimental data. The results show that the air velocity declines gradually and the unsteady effect decays fast in the vaned diffuser with the distance from the impeller. With the decrease of flow flux, the low velocity region near the pressure side of the vaned diffuser reduces, and the secondary flow effect from the cavities near shroud and hub enhances. The diffuser loses its diffusion capability under large flux.

Abstract:It is well known that the flow field over a delta wing is dominated by a pair of counter rotating leading edge vortices (LEV). However, their mechanism is not well understood. The flow visualization technique is a promising non-intrusive method to illustrate the complex flow field spatially and temporally. A basic flow visualization setup consists of a high-powered laser and optic lenses to generate the laser sheet, a camera, a tracer particle generator, and a data processor. The wind tunnel setup, the specifications of devices involved, and the corresponding parameter settings are dependent on the flow features to be obtained. Normal smoke wire flow visualization uses a smoke wire to demonstrate the flow streaklines. However, the performance of this method is limited by poor spatial resolution when it is conducted in a complex flow field. Therefore, an improved smoke flow visualization technique has been developed. This technique illustrates the large-scale global LEV flow field and the small-scale shear layer flow structure at the same time, providing a valuable reference for later detailed particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurement. In this paper, the application of the improved smoke flow visualization and PIV measurement to study the unsteady flow phenomena over a delta wing is demonstrated. The procedure and cautions for conducting the experiment are listed, including wind tunnel setup, data acquisition, and data processing. The representative results show that these two flow visualization methods are effective techniques for investigating the three-dimensional flow field qualitatively and quantitatively.

Abstract:As a key part of the horizontal bias combustion(HBC) technology,the louver coal concentrator has been developed and successfully applied to many large-scale utility boilers.The gas-solid two phase flow was investigated using particle dynamics analyzer(PDA) to study the gas/solid separation mechanism in a louver coal concentrator.Gas-solid two phase field in typical sections,near the blade surface and fuel-rich side exit of the louver coal concentrator were obtained.The results show that the particle concentrate in the louver coal concentrator due to the collision between particles and the blade near the blade surface as well as gas-solid velocity slip between two blades.Blades concentrate particles near the blade and influence little in the zones away from blades.The erosion wall area in fuel-rich side exists between the last blade to 0.7a("a" is the width of the louver coal concentration ) away from it and anti-erosion measures should be considered in application.

Abstract:Air side heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of four-row slotted fin surfaces with arc-type and X-type strip arrangement in pressurized air cooler were studied by visualization experiments.Experiments were carried out with PIV(particle image velocimetry)system and infrared thermo tracer to visualize the flow field and the temperature distribution of two slotted fin surfaces.The experiment results showed that the fluctuation intensity and pressure drop of the X-type slotted fin surface were higher than those of the arc-type slotted fin surface.However,the heat transfer performance and field synergy property of the X-type slotted fin surface were superior to those of the arc-type fin surface.A new definition of fluctuation intensity was proposed to indicate the magnitude of flow disturbance enforced by the configuration and arrangement of slotted fin surface.The higher the fluctuation intensity,the larger the velocity gradient and the vorticity magnitude.The visualization experiment results provide a reliable experimental support for later numerical simulation and optimization design for new fin structures.

Abstract:A new kind of louvered fin structures with staggered holes is proposed, numerical simulation is carried out to study the heat transfer factor and the friction factor, and an experiment is designed to verify the simulation results at different Reynolds numbers, a good agreement is observed. Comparison with the traditional louver structure reveals that when the Reynolds number is between 150 and 400, the heat transfer factor increases by 10~24%, the friction factor increases by 1~2%, and the comprehensive evaluation factor increases by 9~23%. These results can be used for optimization of louver finned heat exchangers.

Abstract:A 3D numerical simulation for the air flow and heat transfer among louvered fins was derived,and the numerical results were compared with the experimental data from literatures.Numerical results show the average error of j and f is 4.7% and 10.5%,in the range of Re=0～1500.In addition,the effects of louver angle and the exchange zone length on the pressure drop and the heat transfer coefficient are studied for louvered fin optimization design.The results show that the louvered angle has distinct effect on the f factor.

Abstract:Experimental studies were conducted to investigate the air-side heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of a novel louvered fins and flat tube heat exchangers. A series of tests were conducted for 9 heat exchangers with different fin space and fin length, at a constant tube-side water flow rate of 2.8 m3/h. The air side thermal performance data were analyzed using the effectiveness-NTU method. Results were presented as plot of Colburn j factor and friction factor f against the Reynolds number in the range of 500–6500. The characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop of different fin space and fin length were analyzed and compared. In addition, the curves of the heat transfer coefficients vs. pumping power per unit heat transfer area were plotted. Finally, the area optimization factor was used to evaluate the thermal hydraulic performance of the louvered fins with differential geometries. The results showed that the j and f factors increase with the decrease of the fin space and fin length, and the fin space has more obvious effect on the thermal hydraulic characteristics of the novel louvered fins.

Abstract:An Experimental investigation on the flow fi el d in vaned diffuser of a centrifugal fan has been conducted using Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV). The experimental configuration consists of a shrouded backswe pt impeller, a vaned diffuser and a scroll. The three-dimensional velocity fiel d in vaned diffuser are obtained in several measurement planes perpendicular to the axis of impeller. The analysis of the distribution of velocity vector and ve locity contour in the those planes on two off-design operating condition shows that the low velocity locates at the convex side of the diffuser as the influenc e of the boundary layer and secondary flow. The direction and magnitude of the v elocity are changed suddenly near the diffuser inlet and throat at the concave s ide of the diffuser. Velocity oscillation, which deteriorate at higher flow rate , are greater at the upstream of the throat than those at the downstream of the throat.

Abstract:Based on the former Φ7 diameter heat exchanger with louver fin surface which has been exploited,the further investigation is made to further optimize the Φ7 diameter louver fin surface configuration.And a new type of Φ5 diameter louver fin heat transfer surface is designed.And then,detailed numerical simulation on flow and heat transfer of the Φ5 diameter louver fin is conduced.The results show that,considered from air-side,the pressure drop decreases while the comprehensive performance factor(CPF) increases in the velocity range of 0.25 —4.00 m s compared with that of Φ7 diameter.And the condenser volume is reduced by 55% compared with that of Φ9 diameter heat transfer surface and by 32% compared with that of Φ7 diameter with the constraint of almost the same heat transfer rate and a bit larger comprehensive performance.

Abstract:The theoretical model of the multiple micro_channel parallel flow condenser is established based on the method of distribution parameters, and validity of the model is verified by comparison with the experimental data.Based on this model, the effects of fin height, fin pitch, louver pitch and louver angle on the heat transfer and flow performance of multiple micro_channel parallel flow condenser are in_vestigated.The results show that, as increasing of fin height, the heat transfer rate increases, but the air_side pressure drop decreases;when fin pitch increases, or louver pitch increases, the heat transfer rate and air_side pressure drop all decrease; as increasing of louver angle, the heat transfer rate and air_side pressure drop all increase.

Abstract:Experimental studies on the air-side heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics for 20 types of multi-louvered fin and flat tube heat exchangers were performed.A series of tests were conducted for air Reynolds number of 200-3000 based on the louver pith with dif- ferent fin pitch,fin height,fin thickness,fin louver angle and flow length,at a constant tube-side flow rate of 2.8 m~3/h.The air side thermal performance data were analyzed using the effectiveness-NTU method.The heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop data for different fin pitch F_p and fin height F_h were reported in terms of Colburn j-factor and Fanning friction factor f,as function of Re_(Lp).The general correla- tions for j and f factors were derived by regression analysis and F test of significance.The correlations for the j and f factors have RMS errors of±10% and±12%,and the mean deviations of 4.1% and 5.6%,respectively,in the Re number range of 200-3000.

Abstract:An experimental investigation of the shrouded centrifugal backswept impeller flow field has been conducted at three design of off-design flow using Laser Doppler Velocimeter(LDV).Characters of main velocity field were described in the exit plane of the blade passage at different flow rate.The position,intensity and development of the separation flow changing the inlet flow rate was clearly documented by velocity vector.The secondary velocity vector plots shows the migration of the secondary vortex across the main flow was influenced by flow rates.

Abstract:The gas-solid two phase flow in a louver coal concentrator(LCC) was investigated using Particle Dynamics Analyzer(PDA).The velocity and flow angle of the air/particle near the blade surface were obtained.The erosion of the blade was predicted using semi-empirical correlation for the erosion ratio.The industrial test of the erosion of the blade was carried out.The results show that the lower part of the blade is eroded heavily.The erosion ratio of the downstream blade is higher than that of upstream.At a blade,the erosion at the back is heavier than at the front.

Case Studies in Thermal Engineering

Abstract:To improve the thermal-hydraulic performance of the louvered fin and flat tube heat exchangers (LFHEs), this paper innovatively proposes the louvered fin-common flow up vortex generator (LF-CFUVG). Then, numerical simulations are conducted to study the effects of airflow direction γ on the thermal-hydraulic performance of the LF-CFUVG. The corresponding results indicate that the flow resistance of the LF-CFUVG is always greater than the Baseline (the LFHE without CFUVGs), as the CFUVGs reduce the minimum free flow area while forming low-speed wake zones behind them. The heat transfer capacity of the LF-CFUVG exceeds the Baseline as well, this is attributed to the longitudinal vortices induced by the CFUVGs, which is helpful to homogenize the temperature field and transport the high-speed and low-temperature airflow. And the thermal-hydraulic performance of LF-CFUVG also outperforms the Baseline. In comparison to the working condition of γ is 0°, the pressure drop Δp for the LF-CFUVG declines with increase of γ from 0° to 30°, thus a larger angle helps to reduce flow resistance. However, the heat transfer coefficients h LF and performance evaluation criteria (PEC) of the LF-CFUVG deteriorate with the increasing γ , so a smaller angle is recommended to obtain an intenser heat transfer and better PEC.
