Abstract:Ionic liquids, with their unique properties, including low volatility, high polarity, good thermal stability over a wide temperature range and selective dissolving capacity by a proper choice of cations or anions, have attracted increasing interest in the organic transformations as reactioin medium as well as catalyst (ligand). Compared with traditional organic solvents, ionic liquids have great advantages in obtaining products with high isolated yields and good to excellent selectivities, accelerationg reaction rate in some cases, ease of work-up, as well as recycling use with or without catalysts after simply recoveration. The paper reviews the advanced progress in the application of ionic liquids as reaction medium as well as catalysts to organic synthesis, mainly including coupling reaction, Michael addition, Baylis-Hillman reaction, Diels-Alder reaction, Aldol reaction, Knoevenagel condensation, cyclorization reaction, alkylation and acylation, oxidation and reduction etc.

Abstract:Samarium is an efficient reducing agent, a radical generator in cyclization and a cascade addition reaction. Interestingly, samarium metal has crucial impact on numerous C-C and C-X (X = hetero atom) bond forming transformations. It has been established as an exceptional chemo-selective and stereoselective reagent. The reactivity of the samarium catalyst/reagent is remarkably enhanced in the presence of various additives, ligands and solvents through effective coordination and an increase in reduction potential. It has inherent character to act as electron donor for a wide range of transformations including the asymmetric version of various reactions. This review accentuates the developments in samarium-mediated/catalyzed asymmetric organic synthesis over the past 12 years, where the chirality has been induced from ligand, a nearby asymmetric center within the substrate or through coordination directed stereospecific reactions.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) have been widely applied as catalysts, promoters and/or reaction medium in organic synthesis due to their non-flammability, low volatility, good solubility, readily tunable catalytic activities and good recyclability. Herein, the recent advances on the applications of acidic task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs), basic TSILs and chiral TSILs in Michael addition have been reviewed. Moreover, the structure, catalytic activity and probable reaction mechanism of ILs are also fully discussed.

Abstract:This paper reviewed the recent research progress of organic reactions catalyzed by four typical earth abundant and 3d metal catalysts: Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni complexes and mainly focused on the reactions in which these 3d metal catalysts exhibited obvious advantages over other catalysts. The mechanism that makes these 3d metal catalysts show unusual properties is another focus of this paper. An outlook on 3d metal complexes-catalyzed organic reactions was also considered.

Abstract:Recently, various nanomaterials have been used in many organic transformations as efficient catalysts. The development of new catalysts by nanoscale design has emerged as a fertile field for research and innovation. The ability of nanotechnology to enhance catalytic activity opens the potential to replace expensive catalysts with lower amounts of inexpensive nanocatalysts. Besides, development of efficient and environmentally friendly synthetic methodologies for the synthesis of compound libraries of medicinal scaffolds is an attractive area of research in both academic and pharmaceutical industry. According to above reports and needs, this review deals with applications of nanoparticles as catalysts in various organic syntheses. We detail the topic of organic transformations using nanoparticles: Metal Nanoparticles and Metal Oxide Nanoparticles. In the latter part, different Metal Oxide Nanoparticles, such as ZnO Nanoparticle, TiO2 Nanoparticle, and CuO Nanoparticle are discussed.

Abstract:In the past decades, DMSO has been widely used not only as a common solvent but also as an environmentally benign oxidant in various organic transformations. Most strikingly, DMSO can be used as a sulfur source to construct methylthiolated building blocks of potential biologically active molecules, which is a remarkable achievement in the field of organic sulfur chemistry. The purpose of this review article is to summarize and discuss the main developments in the application of DMSO as a methylthiolating reagent to introduce the -SMe functionality in organic synthesis.

Abstract:The synthesis of small molecules and complex scaffolds is one of the most important topics in organic synthesis. Aryl methyl ketones, as simple and easily available materials with rich and diverse structures, can generate α-iodoaryl methyl ketones, aryl ketoaldehydes, or sulfur ylide intermediates in the I2–dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) system. These molecules can be easily captured by other components in the system in situ to drive various organic unit reactions and continuous cascade transformation to realize the effective construction of C–X bonds, including C–C, C–S, C–N, and C–O bonds. The reaction system of I2–DMSO–aryl methyl ketone has been widely used in the functionalization of the α-C–H bond of aryl methyl ketones, heterocyclic synthesis, total synthesis of natural products, and other reactions. In view of the rich research foundation and great synthesis potential of the I2–DMSO–aryl methyl ketone reaction system, here, we review the latest progress in this field from the aspects of reaction design, the synthesis strategy, and mechanism research, with an emphasis on its synthesis application. We believe that this review will attract the interest of medical and synthetic organic chemists.

Abstract:Chemical reactions of organic molecules on the metal surface have been intensively investigated in the past decades, where the metal plays the role of catalyst in many cases. In this review, at first we summarize recent works on spatial molecules, small H2O, O2, CO, CO2 molecules, and the molecules carrying silicon groups as the new trends of molecular candidates in on-surface chemistry. Then, we introduce the spectroscopy and DFT study advances in on-surface reactions. Especially, the in-situ spectroscopy technologies such as electronic spectroscopy, force spectroscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, STM-induced luminescence, tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption spectroscopy, and infrared reflection adsorption spectroscopy, are important to confirm the occurrence of organic reactions and analyze the products. To understand the underlying mechanism, the DFT study provides detailed information about reaction pathways, conformational evolution, and organometallic intermediates. Usually, STM/nc-AFM topological images, in-situ spectroscopy data, and DFT studies are combined to describe a full story of on-surface organic reaction.

Abstract:This review highlights the importance of molecular iodine and DMSO as the reagent combination in organic synthesis. The potential of this reagent pair has been showcased in various synthetic transformations such as C−C, C−N, C−O, C−S bond formations and in a series of other reactions like carbon insertion, oxidation, C−C bond cleavage, and formylation processes. The advantages of this reagent combination have been discussed along with the detailed mechanistic investigations. Organic synthesis involves the production of important chemical structures using scalable and cost‐effective methods that are also environmentally friendly. In this review, a detailed analysis of the use of iodine and DMSO in various synthetic routes for the preparation of valuable targets are presented. These methods reduce the acceptance on expensive additives and reagents, and offer a more sustainable solution for the synthesis of these important chemical scaffolds.

Abstract:Cisplatin coined a term Metallodrug and later a tradition of Metallodrugs was established. Later, severe renal and metabolic toxicities of the platinum based drugs prompted the medicinal chemists to develop new and novel metallotherapeutics with different metal cores. Henceforth, chemists designed the metal complexes based on copper, cobalt, vanadium iron and zinc. These complexes were reported for their antibacterial, anticancer, antidiabetic and enzyme inhibitors. Later, chemists also focused on lanthanide metal ions and resulted in the design of metal complexes for the application of bio imaging cellular studies as well as chemotherapeutic agents. This review throws a light on the recent advances in the development of the samarium complexes as efficient and versatile biological agents. Samarium complexes based on various ligand systems and ancillary ligands have been mentioned in this review stating their biological efficacy and potency against variable cancer cell lines, their DNA interactive behaviour.

Abstract:The use of sulfonium salts in organic synthesis has experienced a dramatic increase during the last years that can arguably be attributed to three main factors; the development of more direct and efficient synthetic methods that make easily available sulfonium reagents of a wide structural variety, their intrinsic thermal stability, which facilitates their structural modification, handling and purification even on large scale, and the recognition that their reactivity resembles that of hypervalent iodine compounds and therefore, they can be used as replacement of such reagents for most of their uses. This renewed interest has led to the improvement of already existing reactions, as well as to the discovery of unprecedented transformations; in particular, by the implementation of photocatalytic protocols. This review aims to summarize the most recent advancements on the area focusing on the work published during and after 2020. The scope of the methods developed will be highlighted and their limitations critically evaluated.
