Abstract:The biomass-derivable ethyl lactate has been attracting daily increasing attention as a green medium in organic synthe- sis. The unique advantages of nontoxicity, low cost, complete biodegradability, high boiling point, and excellent compatibility to water and most organic compounds of this solvent cater well to the property of a green reaction medium. In recent years, ethyl lactate (EL) has been successfully used as medium in different types of organic reactions, including Suzuki-Miyaura reaction, Glaser reaction as well as cascade synthesis of heterocyclic compounds with biological activities. Based on our own research in- terest in this issue, the advances in organic synthesis employing EL as a green medium are summarized. Abstract:Ionic liquids, with their unique properties, including low volatility, high polarity, good thermal stability over a wide temperature range and selective dissolving capacity by a proper choice of cations or anions, have attracted increasing interest in the organic transformations as reactioin medium as well as catalyst (ligand). Compared with traditional organic solvents, ionic liquids have great advantages in obtaining products with high isolated yields and good to excellent selectivities, accelerationg reaction rate in some cases, ease of work-up, as well as recycling use with or without catalysts after simply recoveration. The paper reviews the advanced progress in the application of ionic liquids as reaction medium as well as catalysts to organic synthesis, mainly including coupling reaction, Michael addition, Baylis-Hillman reaction, Diels-Alder reaction, Aldol reaction, Knoevenagel condensation, cyclorization reaction, alkylation and acylation, oxidation and reduction etc.

Abstract:Compounds containing aryl structures are important organic synthesis intermediates,which are widely present in a large family of natural products and bioactive molecules.In recent years,direct asymmetric functionalization of benzylic C(sp3)-H bond for the efficient construction of arene and hetero-arene motifs with high stereoselectivity has drawn widespread concern from chemical community.Among the various strategies,small molecule-catalyzed metal-free functionalization of benzylic C(sp3)-H bond represents a more challenging but promising transformations.This review is intended to summarize and discuss the most recent advances in this area.

Abstract:Metal-mediated organic reactions have become one of the great frontiers of organic synthesis. These processes usually involve multiple transient or unobservable reactive intermediates. The isolation and study of these reactive organometallic intermediates would not only lead to a better understanding of their reactivity, but also guide the discovery of new reactions, culminating in the advancement of novel synthetic methods. Herein we provide a perspective of a research strategy which focuses on organometallic intermediate-based organic synthesis. Specifically, we highlight the applications of our organo-di-lithio reagents to the synthesis of a diverse range of reactive intermediates and small molecules. A series of organo-di-lithio reagents has been synthesized, isolated, and applied in organic and organometallic synthesis. These isolated dilithio reagents can be transformed into a variety of organo-di-metallic or metallacyclic compounds via transmetallation, which in turn provides access to organic and organometallic compounds with interesting and useful properties. Selected examples by other research groups are also briefly mentioned, in which reactive organometallic intermediates are isolated for a better understanding of reaction mechanisms, and in some cases are further applied to synthesis.

Abstract:Organohalides are particularly important and versatile, as they are found not only in bioactive natural products, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and materials but also serve as fundamental reagents in synthetic chemistry. The rapid development of electrosynthesis as an environmentally friendly and efficient technology provides solutions for the synthesis of organohalides that avoid the use of chemical oxidants and minimize the formation of by-products. This review summarizes recent advances in the electrochemical difunctionalization of alkenes and alkynes for the synthesis of organohalides, as well as their underlying mechanisms. We anticipate that this work will stimulate new strategies for the synthesis of organohalides.

Abstract:This paper reviewed the recent research progress of organic reactions catalyzed by four typical earth abundant and 3d metal catalysts: Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni complexes and mainly focused on the reactions in which these 3d metal catalysts exhibited obvious advantages over other catalysts. The mechanism that makes these 3d metal catalysts show unusual properties is another focus of this paper. An outlook on 3d metal complexes-catalyzed organic reactions was also considered.

Abstract:The recent advancements in utilizing organocatalysts for the synthesis of organic compounds have been described in this review by focusing on their simplicity, effectiveness, reproducibility, and high selectivity which lead to excellent product yields. The organocatalytic methods for various derivatives, such as indoles, pyrazolones, anthrone-functionalized benzylic amines, maleimide, polyester, phthalimides, dihydropyrimidin, heteroaryls, N -aryl benzimidazoles, stilbenoids, quinazolines, quinolines, and oxazolidinones have been specifically focused. The review provides more understanding by delving into potential reaction mechanisms. We anticipate that this collection of data and findings on successful synthesis of diverse compound derivatives will serve as valuable resources and stimulating current and future research efforts in organocatalysis and industrial chemistry.

Abstract:Diazo compounds had been widely employed as a class of environment friendly and highly efficient coupling reagents in transition-metal-catalyzed C-H bonds insertion reactions.Recently, C-H alkylation of various arenes and heteroarenes has been achieved enormous successes using diazo compounds as the alkylation reagents under a new catalytic model.The recent progress in diazo compounds mediated transition-metal-catalyzed C-H alkylation and tandem C-H alkylation/cyclization is reviewed, including reaction mechanism and synthetic applications.Furthermore, the prospects of this reaction are also discussed.

Particularly, the featured amino and carbonyl group in the enaminone structure endow them with the ability of tolerating water via hydrogen bonding effect. Thus, designing synthetic methods in aqueous medium with enaminones as the main building blocks has received extensive attention and notable success. Abstract:Chemical reactions of organic molecules on the metal surface have been intensively investigated in the past decades, where the metal plays the role of catalyst in many cases. In this review, at first we summarize recent works on spatial molecules, small H2O, O2, CO, CO2 molecules, and the molecules carrying silicon groups as the new trends of molecular candidates in on-surface chemistry. Then, we introduce the spectroscopy and DFT study advances in on-surface reactions. Especially, the in-situ spectroscopy technologies such as electronic spectroscopy, force spectroscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, STM-induced luminescence, tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption spectroscopy, and infrared reflection adsorption spectroscopy, are important to confirm the occurrence of organic reactions and analyze the products. To understand the underlying mechanism, the DFT study provides detailed information about reaction pathways, conformational evolution, and organometallic intermediates. Usually, STM/nc-AFM topological images, in-situ spectroscopy data, and DFT studies are combined to describe a full story of on-surface organic reaction.

Abstract:This mini-review offers a comprehensive overview of the advancements made over the last three years in utilizing highly polar s-block organometallic reagents (specifically, RLi, RNa and RMgX compounds) in organic synthesis run under bench-type reaction conditions. These conditions involve exposure to air/moisture and are carried out at room temperature, with the use of sustainable solvents as reaction media. In the examples provided, the adoption of Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) or even water as non-conventional and protic reaction media has not only replicated the traditional chemistry of these organometallic reagents in conventional and toxic volatile organic compounds under Schlenk-type reaction conditions (typically involving low temperatures of −78 °C to 0 °C and a protective atmosphere of N2 or Ar), but has also resulted in higher conversions and selectivities within remarkably short reaction times (measured in s/min). Furthermore, the application of the aforementioned polar organometallics under bench-type reaction conditions (at room temperature/under air) has been extended to other environmentally responsible reaction media, such as more sustainable ethereal solvents (e.g., CPME or 2-MeTHF). Notably, this innovative approach contributes to enhancing the overall sustainability of s-block-metal-mediated organic processes, thereby aligning with several key principles of Green Chemistry.

Abstract:This review discusses various methods for the preparation of air and water‐stable organozinc pivalates containing aryl, heteroaryl, alkyl, alkenyl, benzyl and alkynyl scaffolds achieved via i) selective metalation (DoM) in the presence of a directing group (DG) in the aromatic core, ii) direct oxidative Zn metal insertion/or X/M exchange reaction followed by transmetalation with Zn(Opiv)2, which are then further functionalized by Negishi cross‐coupling reactions, or trapping with different aryl, heteroaryl, alkenyl, alkynyl electrophiles used by transition metal catalysts (Pd, Co, Ni, Cu). Selective deprotonation of aryl or heteroaryl derivatives can be performed using LDA, TMP‐Mg and TMP‐Zn reagents in the presence of a directing group on the aromatic system. Different organozinc reagents based on aromatic and non‐aromatic structures with electron‐rich and electron‐deficient substituents undergo transition metal‐catalyzed cross‐coupling reactions with aryl and heteroaryl halides and diaryl disulfides under mild conditions with the sustainable catalytic process. In this context, this review article provides a detailed summary of the numerous synthetic strategies and practical methods for the preparation of aryl, alkenyl, benzyl and alkynyl organozinc reagents that can be isolated in the pure solid form. Additionally, some recently published examples demonstrating their catalytic application in organic synthesis are discussed.

Abstract:Organosulfur compounds are ubiquitous in natural products and active pharmaceutical ingredients. They are also versatile scaffold that are widely applicable in material and food chemistry. The increasing demand indeed lead to a continuous progress in developing of new methodologies in organosulfur chemistry. Among them, sulfur ylides and sulfonium salts with unique reactivities have been employed to provide simple, effective, and often stereoselective methods to gain access to sulfur containing molecules. The essential goal of this review is to provide a comprehensive account of representative research progress on sulfonium salt and sulfur ylide chemistry in the past three years. Seminal reports on this topic are occasionally covered with the purpose of providing a brief research background. For the sake of convenience, this review is organized in three parts based on the role they played in organic reactions (synthetic intermediates, reagents and catalysts). In the first section, the development of new approaches for generate sulfur ylide or sulfonium salt intermediates were summarized. Electrophilic aryne species could be employed to react with sulfides or sulfoxides to form the desired sulfur intermediates, which could underwent a variety of interesting transformations. Moreover, recent progress in metal carbene-based sulfur ylide approaches have also been introduced. Both the progress in asymmetric catalysis variants and reactions in aqueous solution have been presented. The second section describes the transformations using stabilized sulfonium salts and sulfur ylides as bench-stable reactants. The extra stability of these species is accompanied by a compromise in the reactivity, which usually requires developing activation methods. With transition metal catalysts to activate sulfonium salts, they have been discovered as efficient coupling partners in carbon-carbon bond and carbon-heteroatom bond formation reactions. Stable sulfur ylides could also be utilized to install fluorine-containing groups in a large variety of transformations. The third section covers recent progress in employing sulfonium salts as catalysts in organic reactions. The acidity of the α C−H in sulfonium salt is relatively high than its nitrogen and phosphine analogues. Therefore, it could be easily removed to form the sulfur ylide, which have restricted its application as catalysts. On one hand, scientists took advantage of these properties and developed new cyclic sulfonium salts as hydrogen bonding catalysts. On the other hand, sulfonium salts could be used as stable phase transfer catalysts under base free conditions in order to avoid degradations. Finally, the review discussed the limitations of the known chemistry in this field as well as the future opportunities. Sulfur ylide and sulfonium salts have displayed many unique reactivities as summarized in this review. New reactivity will still be the central theme of research given the importance of organosulfur compounds. In addition, insights into the factors controlling the reactivity via mechanistic studies will be of great importance for further research and development. Moreover, the applications of sulfonium salts as organocatalysts are still limited to a relatively narrow range of transformations. Therefore, it remains to be an elusive task to unlock their full potential, and future research must include the development of scalable and cost-efficient methods, broadening of reaction scopes, and integration with other catalytic manifolds. We hope that this review will pique the interests of readers and deliver inspiration for future development in this interesting and promising field.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">1,1-Diaryl moieties are core structures in a wide range of bioactive and pharmaceutical compounds. Transition-metal catalysis is a convenient approach to accessing these invaluable compounds affording high yields and enantioselectivities. This review summarizes 1,1-diarylalkanes synthesis through transition metal catalysis. Particular focus is given to recent developments, such as reductive cross-electrophile couplings, benzylic C-H bond arylation, transformations involving metal migration, asymmetric hydrogenation of 1,1-diarylalkenes and three-component coupling reactions.</p>
