Abstract:The discovery of highly active 2,6-bis(imino)pyridyl iron and cobalt complexes provided a milestone of late-transition metal catalysts for ethylene oligomerization and polymerization with being currently investigated for the scale-up process. The crucial problems are remaining in the catalytic systems: the catalytic systems targeting ethylene polymerization produce more oligomers at elevated reaction temperatures, however, there is a recognizable amount of high-molecular-weight polyethylene remained in the modified catalytic system for the oligomerization process. Beyond the modification of bis(imino)pyridyl metal complexes, several alternative procatalysts' models have been developed in our group. This review highlighted the achievements in exploring new iron and cobalt complexes with tridentate NNN ligands as procatalysts for ethylene oligomerization and polymerization.

Abstract:Based on the methods for cycloolefin copolymers(COC) preparation and their characteristics introduced,the mechanism of carbine catalysts(emphasisly Grubbs' catalyst) for the ring-opening metathetic polymerization(ROMP) and the influences of catalyst's ligands and polymeric conditions on the polymerization rate and product properties are reviewed.Furthermore,the catalysts for hydrogenation of many residual CC in ring-opening products and their properties are also introduced.

Abstract:Preparation of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) by tandem action of an oligomerization catalyst and a copolymerization catalyst is one of the most popular areas in polyolefin catalyst research. Advance in the tandem catalysis system is reviewed. Five kinds of tandem catalysis systems are discussed,namely,low selectivity system,high selectivity system,long branched system, supported metallocene catalyst system,and dual functional system considering the selectivity of oligomerization catalyst and difference in the copolymerization catalysts used. The selectivity of oligomerization catalysts and compatibility of copolymerization catalysts with different abilities played an important role in the polymerization with respect to polymer structure and properties under various reaction conditions. The features of different systems are also discussed.

Abstract:The pursuit of high-performance polyolefin materials has been an objective for chemists. Recently, the development of multinuclear catalysts has significantly enabled the preparation of high-performance polyolefin materials. In this review, we mainly focus on the cooperative effects of multinuclear early transition metal catalysts and provide a comprehensive summary of the research progress in binuclear and multinuclear early transition metal catalysts over the past decade. Compared with the catalytic performance and polymer structure of these catalysts with mononuclear catalysts, we have found that various factors, such as steric hindrance effect, electronic effect, heteroatom effect, hydrogen bonding interaction, the distance between metal centers in multinuclear metal catalysts, and the use of additives, have distinctive and significant impacts on catalyst performance. These effects give rise to notable cooperative effects. This review offers crucial insights and serves as a valuable reference for shaping the future development directions of binuclear and multinuclear early transition metal catalysts.

Abstract:50 years ago, Karl Ziegler and Giulio Natta were awarded the Nobel Prize for their discovery of the catalytic polymerization of ethylene and propylene using titanium compounds and aluminum-alkyls as co-catalysts. Polyolefins have grown to become one of the biggest of all produced polymers. New metallocene/methylaluminoxane (MAO) catalysts open the possibility to synthesize polymers with highly defined microstructure, tacticity, and steroregularity, as well as long-chain branched, or blocky copolymers with excellent properties. This improvement in polymerization is possible due to the single active sites available on the metallocene catalysts in contrast to their traditional counterparts. Moreover, these catalysts, half titanocenes/MAO, zirconocenes, and other single site catalysts can control various important parameters, such as co-monomer distribution, molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, molecular architecture, stereo-specificity, degree of linearity, and branching of the polymer. However, in most cases research in this area has reduced academia as olefin polymerization has seen significant advancements in the industries. Therefore, this paper aims to further motivate interest in polyolefin research in academia by highlighting promising and open areas for the future.

Molecular design and assembly of catalysts can be achieved at molecular level. New types of polymers with novel structures, morphology, properties and functions can be obtained. Abstract:Novel polymerizations based on alkyne monomers are becoming a powerful tool to construct polymers with unique structures and advanced functions in the areas of polymer and material sciences, and scientists have been attracted to develop a variety of novel polymerizations in recent decades. Therein, catalytic systems play an indispensable role in the influence of polymerization efficiencies and the performances of the resultant polymers. Concerning the shortcomings of metallic catalysts, much of the recent research focus has been on metal-free polymerization systems. In this paper, metal-free catalysts are classified and the corresponding polymerizations are reviewed, including organobase-catalyzed polymerizations, Lewis-acid-catalyzed polymerizations, as well as catalyst-free polymerizations. Moreover, the challenges and perspectives in this area are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:The current development of the metallocene-based Ziegler-Natta catalysts has been reviewed. The discovery of these catalysts has offered the opportunity to obtain a deeper insight into the mechanism of Ziegler-Natta polymerizations. In this review, some mechanistic models for polymerization and stereoregulation, as well as the factors which affect the activity and stereospecificity of the catalysts, have been discussed. The technology of olefin polymerization with the metallocene-based catalysts is in the early stage of commercialization. Using these catalysts, a large number of novel polymers with special properties have been obtained.

Abstract:Olefin metathesis has been widely used in the fields of petrochemical industry and organic synthesis. It can be classified as ring-opening metathesis, ring-opening metathesis polymerization, ring-closing metathesis and cross-metathesis, etc. Recent developments in the heterogeneous catalysts for olefin cross-metathesis are Summarized in this review. Much attention has been paid not only to the heterogeneous catalysts based on Re, Mo and W, but also to the effects that may influence the catalyst activity, such as the metal oxidation state, structure and dispersion of the active species, properties of the support and the addition of promoters, etc. The reaction mechanisms and possible deactivation routes are also discussed in detail.

Abstract:This paper reviewed the recent research progress of organic reactions catalyzed by four typical earth abundant and 3d metal catalysts: Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni complexes and mainly focused on the reactions in which these 3d metal catalysts exhibited obvious advantages over other catalysts. The mechanism that makes these 3d metal catalysts show unusual properties is another focus of this paper. An outlook on 3d metal complexes-catalyzed organic reactions was also considered.

Abstract:Rare earth (RE) catalysts exhibit extremely high catalytic activity in ring-opening polymerization. This work reviews the application of rare earth catalysts in ring-opening polymerizations of lactones, lactides, cyclic ethers, cyclic carbonates and cyclic carboxyanhydrides in the past decade. Compared to other transition metals and main group elements, RE elements have larger cationic radii which allow for higher coordination numbers and more coordination modes, endowing RE catalysts with high catalytic activity. These characteristics not only fuel the widespread use of new RE catalysts in pursuing high molecular weight and polymerization rate of intensively studied monomers, such as epsilon-caprolactone (CL), lactide (LA) and beta-butyllactone (BBL), but also unleash the polymerization of traditionally non-polymerizable gamma-butyrolactone (gamma-BL) and its derivatives. The inherent low strain energy of the five-membered ring imparts monomer recyclability into the corresponding polymer. Furthermore, stereoselective polymerization of racemic monomers can be realized by RE catalysts containing chiral ligands with large steric hindrance. Slight modification of ligands gives rise to tailored or even inverted stereoregularity of polymers. The unique advantages of RE catalysts in the controllability of polymerization process and polymer structure are illustrated by discussing the relationship between catalyst structures and polymerization results. In addition, a novel ring-opening polymerization catalyzed by RE compounds, named Janus polymerization is introduced. This new mechanism combines cationic and anionic polymerizations at two ends of a single propagating chain and thus provides a facile methodology to synthesize polymers with sophisticated chemical structures and topologies in one step. New catalysts and mechanisms of ring-opening polymerizations have attractive potentiality in begetting new materials.

Abstract:Polymers have become one of the major types of materials that are essential in our daily life. The controlled synthesis of value-added polymers with unique mechanical and chemical properties have attracted broad research interest. Metal–organic framework (MOF) is a class of porous material with immense structural diversity which offers unique advantages for catalyzing polymerization and oligomerization reactions including the uniformity of the catalytic active site, and the templating effect of the nano-sized channels. We summarized in this review the important recent progress in the field of MOF-catalyzed and MOF-templated polymerizations, to reveal the chemical principle and structural aspects of these systems and hope to inspire the future design of novel polymerization systems with improved activity and specificity.

Abstract:A new series of single-component air-stable transition metal acetylide catalysts for the polymerization of substituted acetylenes carrying non-polar and polar groups was developed. The catalytic properties of transition metal acetylides are related to transition metals, phosphines and acetylenic ligands. Nickel acetylides show higher catalytic activity towards the polymerization of substituted acetylenes containing non-polar groups, while palladium acetylides show higher catalytic activity towards the polymerization of substituted acetylenes carrying polar groups. Palladium acetylides with PPh 3 ligand are efficient catalysts for the polymerization of substituted acetylenes bearing both non-polar and polar groups.

Abstract:Catalysts play a pivotal role in the olefin polymerization process. After decades of development, a growing number of transition metal catalysts have been widely used in the field of olefin polymerization. Among them, the performance of catalysts such as nickel, titanium, vanadium and chromium are the most attractive. During catalysis process, the chemical valence of the metal in the catalysts usually changed and formed active center with unpaired electron at their outmost electron orbital. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) is a good means to detect unpaired electron and free radicals and avoid distraction of other species such as co-catalyst, solvent, monomer etc. This paper reviews the recent progress in the preparation of branched polyethylene with nickel, titanium, vanadium and chromium catalytic systems and EPR analysis of related catalytic systems.

Abstract:The introduction of polar functional groups into polyolefin chain structures creates opportunities to enhance specific properties, such as adhesion, dyeability, printability, compatibility, thermal stability, and electrical conductivity, which widen the range of potential applications for these modified materials. Transition metal catalysts, especially late transition metals, have proven to be highly effective in copolymerization processes due to their reduced Lewis acidity and electrophilicity. However, when compared to the significant progress and summary of synthetic methods, there is a distinct lack of a comprehensive summary of mechanistic studies pertaining to the catalytic systems involved in ethylene copolymerization catalyzed by palladium and nickel catalysts. In this review, we have provided a comprehensive summary of the latest developments in mechanistic studies of ethylene copolymerization with polar monomers catalyzed by late-transition-metal complexes. Experimental and computational methods were employed to conduct a detailed investigation of these organic and organometallic systems. It is mainly focused on ligand substitution, changes in binding modes, ethylene/polar monomer insertion, chelate opening, and β-H elimination. Factors that control the catalytic activity, molecular weight, comonomer incorporation ratios, and branch content are analyzed, these include steric repulsions between ligands and monomers, electronic effects arising from both ligands and monomers, and so on.

Abstract:The advances in homopolymerization of polar monomers and copolymerization of nonpolar monomers with polar monomers based on CGC catalyst,half-metallocene catalyst,bis-metallocene catalyst,multinuclear metallocene catalyst,bridged metallocene catalyst,and non-metallocene catalyst are reviewed. The mechanism of polar monomer polymerization promoted by metallocene catalysts includes living radical polymerization and coordination polymerization.Polymer of polar monomer and copolymer of polar monomer with nonpolar monomer are prepared via metallocene catalysts. It not only expands the application of metallocene catalysts in polymer science,but also develops a kind of polar polyolefin resin featuring new performance.
