Abstract:Ionic liquids, with their unique properties, including low volatility, high polarity, good thermal stability over a wide temperature range and selective dissolving capacity by a proper choice of cations or anions, have attracted increasing interest in the organic transformations as reactioin medium as well as catalyst (ligand). Compared with traditional organic solvents, ionic liquids have great advantages in obtaining products with high isolated yields and good to excellent selectivities, accelerationg reaction rate in some cases, ease of work-up, as well as recycling use with or without catalysts after simply recoveration. The paper reviews the advanced progress in the application of ionic liquids as reaction medium as well as catalysts to organic synthesis, mainly including coupling reaction, Michael addition, Baylis-Hillman reaction, Diels-Alder reaction, Aldol reaction, Knoevenagel condensation, cyclorization reaction, alkylation and acylation, oxidation and reduction etc.

Abstract:Application of ionic liquids in organic synthesis promoted by microwave irradiation as a new green methodology has been attracting great interests. Microwave-assisted organic transformations, using ionic liquids as reaction medium or catalysts, have great advantages in accelerating reaction rate, obtaining products with high recovery yield and good selectivity, ease of work-up, as well as recycling usage of ionic liquids after simply regeneration. The paper reviews the progress of ionic liquids as microwave mediums or catalysts in the fields of organic synthesis, mainly including cyclization, nucleophilic substitution, ring closing metathesis, acylation, rearrangement, polymerization, coupling, oxidation and reduction as well as selective debromination, etc.

Abstract:Samarium is an efficient reducing agent, a radical generator in cyclization and a cascade addition reaction. Interestingly, samarium metal has crucial impact on numerous C-C and C-X (X = hetero atom) bond forming transformations. It has been established as an exceptional chemo-selective and stereoselective reagent. The reactivity of the samarium catalyst/reagent is remarkably enhanced in the presence of various additives, ligands and solvents through effective coordination and an increase in reduction potential. It has inherent character to act as electron donor for a wide range of transformations including the asymmetric version of various reactions. This review accentuates the developments in samarium-mediated/catalyzed asymmetric organic synthesis over the past 12 years, where the chirality has been induced from ligand, a nearby asymmetric center within the substrate or through coordination directed stereospecific reactions.

Abstract:In the past decades, DMSO has been widely used not only as a common solvent but also as an environmentally benign oxidant in various organic transformations. Most strikingly, DMSO can be used as a sulfur source to construct methylthiolated building blocks of potential biologically active molecules, which is a remarkable achievement in the field of organic sulfur chemistry. The purpose of this review article is to summarize and discuss the main developments in the application of DMSO as a methylthiolating reagent to introduce the -SMe functionality in organic synthesis.

Abstract:This review highlights the importance of molecular iodine and DMSO as the reagent combination in organic synthesis. The potential of this reagent pair has been showcased in various synthetic transformations such as C−C, C−N, C−O, C−S bond formations and in a series of other reactions like carbon insertion, oxidation, C−C bond cleavage, and formylation processes. The advantages of this reagent combination have been discussed along with the detailed mechanistic investigations. Organic synthesis involves the production of important chemical structures using scalable and cost‐effective methods that are also environmentally friendly. In this review, a detailed analysis of the use of iodine and DMSO in various synthetic routes for the preparation of valuable targets are presented. These methods reduce the acceptance on expensive additives and reagents, and offer a more sustainable solution for the synthesis of these important chemical scaffolds.

Abstract:The synthesis of small molecules and complex scaffolds is one of the most important topics in organic synthesis. Aryl methyl ketones, as simple and easily available materials with rich and diverse structures, can generate α-iodoaryl methyl ketones, aryl ketoaldehydes, or sulfur ylide intermediates in the I2–dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) system. These molecules can be easily captured by other components in the system in situ to drive various organic unit reactions and continuous cascade transformation to realize the effective construction of C–X bonds, including C–C, C–S, C–N, and C–O bonds. The reaction system of I2–DMSO–aryl methyl ketone has been widely used in the functionalization of the α-C–H bond of aryl methyl ketones, heterocyclic synthesis, total synthesis of natural products, and other reactions. In view of the rich research foundation and great synthesis potential of the I2–DMSO–aryl methyl ketone reaction system, here, we review the latest progress in this field from the aspects of reaction design, the synthesis strategy, and mechanism research, with an emphasis on its synthesis application. We believe that this review will attract the interest of medical and synthetic organic chemists.

Abstract:Redox-active benzimidazolium sulfonamides as thiolating reagents have been developed for reductive C-S bond coupling. The IMDN-SO2R reagent provides a bench-stable cationic precursor to generate a portfolio of highly active N-S intermediates, which can be successfully applied in cross-electrophilic coupling with various organic halides. The employment of an electrophilic sulfur source solved the problem of catalyst deactivation and avoided odorous thiols, featuring practical conditions, broad substrate scope, and excellent tolerance.

Abstract:Recent Advances of Sustainable Desilylation Reactions Silicon, due to its abundance, non‐toxicity, and cost‐effectiveness, is a critical element in the earth's crust with significant industrial applications. In organic chemistry, main group elements, and in particular silicon, are extensively utilized as versatile synthetic intermediates. Despite the current challenges associated with harsh reaction conditions and unsustainable practices in synthesizing crucial organic structural molecules, desilylation reactions have emerged as a facilitative method, offering milder conditions and operational simplicity. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of recent advancements in the synthesis of valuable organic molecules through two distinct desilylation reactions. It systematically presents the synthesis of a variety of derivatives, such as furan, alcohol, N‐heterocyclic, and ketone, highlighting the broad substrate tolerance of these reactions. This broad functional group compatibility suggests a promising future for the synthesis of a wide range of bioactive molecules, underscoring the significant potential of desilylation in contemporary organic synthesis.

Abstract:Iodine(III) reagents have gained importance in organic synthesis due to their strong oxidative properties in addition to several advantages over other related such as, non-toxic, green, easy to handle and in general safe for using. These characteristics become them useful tools and represent relevant alternatives to procedures which involves harsh and/or hazardous reaction conditions. They are versatile oxidants that has been largely used in the functionalization of a broad variety of aromatic nucleus, resulting in the introduction of several groups, including in the most general classification, organic and inorganics. In this sense, the metal-free arylation mediated by iodine(III) reagents is the most reported issue in the literature. Nevertheless, other relevant inorganic functionalities were also introduced. Herein, we review the most important procedures described to date for the aromatic functionalization with inorganic groups such as halogens, as well as the nitro-, azido, cyano-, sulfur- and selenium groups, under the iodine(III) chemistry.

Abstract:An efficient and practical electrophilic amination method that allows the preparation of useful quaternary carbon-containing α-aminoketones was developed. The reaction proceeds regiospecifically via a samarium enolate intermediate at room temperature in the presence of mild reducing agent SmI2. Unlike the most reported lithium enolate cases, this new amination method does not require the use of strong base such as BuLi or LDA.

Abstract:The use of sulfonium salts in organic synthesis has experienced a dramatic increase during the last years that can arguably be attributed to three main factors; the development of more direct and efficient synthetic methods that make easily available sulfonium reagents of a wide structural variety, their intrinsic thermal stability, which facilitates their structural modification, handling and purification even on large scale, and the recognition that their reactivity resembles that of hypervalent iodine compounds and therefore, they can be used as replacement of such reagents for most of their uses. This renewed interest has led to the improvement of already existing reactions, as well as to the discovery of unprecedented transformations; in particular, by the implementation of photocatalytic protocols. This review aims to summarize the most recent advancements on the area focusing on the work published during and after 2020. The scope of the methods developed will be highlighted and their limitations critically evaluated.
