Abstract:The butt welding of 45 carbon structural steel has been analyzed using a nonlinear transient finite element (FE) model. With numerical analysis technology, welding heat transfer and thermal elasto-plastictity have been progressed. Also the effects of welding seam growth with heating source movement have been studied using the birth and death technique. For this purpose, a 3-D structural and thermal direct-coupled solution has been used to obtain the temperature changing curves and residual stresses distributions. In addition, the variations of physical properties of material with temperature have been taken into account. Results indicate that the heating speed of welding is rapid, and the distributions of residual stresses are not symmetrical along the welding seam’s centerline, and the residual stresses are change along the welding direction and also in the plate-thickness. It has been shown that use of 3-D direct coupled-field and nonlinear transient model will lead to more accurate and realistic results.

Abstract:Double-sided arc welding (DSAW), as an advanced connection method, has become a typical method for large pressure hull with thick plates. However, welding deformation and residual stress will seriously affect the dimensional deviation and fatigue life of the product. Therefore, it is a very important work to predict and control the welding deformation and residual stress. A novel dynamic heat distribution model considering the weave of welding torches is proposed to accurately predict DSAW deformation and residual stress in this paper. It is worth noting that this paper also puts forward a method to control the welding deformation and residual stress by flexible constraints of multi-point array, which makes the radial deformation less than 2 mm and the maximum axial stress is 423.98 MPa. This research provides a new idea for the accurate prediction and control of welding deformation and residual stress, which has great engineering significance.

Abstract:In this article, by using the stability of Cauchy type integral when the smooth perturbation for integral curve and the Sobolev type perturbation for kernel density happen, we discuss the stability of the second fundamental problem in plane elasticity when the smooth perturbation for the boundary of the elastic domain (unit disk) and the Sobolev type perturbation for the displacement happen. And the error estimate of the displacement between the second fundamental problem and its perturbed problem is obtained.

Abstract:Making use of ANSYS software,the instability of each order's modality for the 4mm-thick liner of high-pressure hydrogen storage container which made of carbon fiber composite material was implemented.Considering the prestress and safety margin,the 4mm-thick liner was selected. The fatigue test in rapid hydrogen-charging and discharging environment was conducted for a 70 MPa high-pressure hydrogen storage vessel,including other tests like pressure test,impact resistance test and burst test. The test results prove the vessel safety.

Abstract:By employing potential theory, the expressions of the perturbation growth rate varying with radial perturbation wavenumbers are derived for a swirling jet shear layer containing suspended solid particles under a non-axisymmetric perturbation. Modified Rayleigh criterion for the stability of this flow is presented. Based on the results obtained under different particle mass densities, particle-gas perturbation velocity ratios, particle-gas perturbation velocity phase differences and Stokes numbers, several important conclusions on the effect of particles on the stability of a swirling jet shear layer are provided. These conclusions are useful for controls of a swirling jet flow and its subsequent development.

Abstract:A modified shakedown theorem and its solving technique are presented to involve hydrogen embrittlement of steel into limit and shakedown analysis. Firstly, the shakedown theorem for hydrogen embrittled material is derived from a limited kinematic hardening shakedown theorem and hydrogen enhanced localized plasticity mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement. In the presented theorem, hydrogen’s effect is taken into account by the synergistic action of both strength reduction and stress redistribution. Secondly, a novel solving technique is developed based on the basis reduction method, in which the complicated constraints in the resulting nonlinear mathematical programming are released. At last, three numerical examples are carried out to verify the performance of the proposed method and to reveal hydrogen’s effect on the limit and shakedown load of structure. The numerical results are discussed and compared with those from literatures, which proves the accuracy and high efficiency of the introduced solving technique. It is concluded that the proposed theorem can predict the limit and shakedown load of hydrogen embrittled structure reasonably.

Abstract:Among the challenges in material strength, one of the most difficult and urgent is determining the state of materials subjected to temperature loads, in particular those caused by welding. In this context, determining residual stresses in materials due to thermal effects is of both theoretical and practical importance. When brought to the final form, the analytical solution of spatial problems regarding determining stresses in materials from various factors is often associated with difficulties in choosing solution methods. In this work, the analytical solution without spatial idealization of the problem of residual stresses occurring in an infinite plate due to spot contact welding is performed using integral transformations and brought to a result that can be extended to any closed region by superposition if necessary. The problem is formulated so that the weld spot in a plate of a certain thickness is considered a concentrated defect. The set task has been solved in closed form. The solution involves using mathematical tools such as Helmholtz's theorem, Hankel's integral, Fourier transforms, and Green's functions. The results obtained using the proposed method can be used, in particular, by researchers who determine residual stresses experimentally for comparison and verification purposes.

Finite element analysis of the angular distortion and residual stress in underwater wet welding

Abstract:In underwater environment, the shape, voltage, and energy density of the welding arc vary because of the high pressure and there are notable changes in workpiece cooling conditions due to the strong cooling effect of water. As a result, there are clear differences between the residual stress and thermal distortion in underwater wet welding and those in conventional welding (in air). Considering these process features, a thermo-mechanical finite element model of underwater wet bead-on-plate welding was established. The influences of the water compressing action to the arc and the enhanced heat losses caused by the surrounding water on the residual stress and the angular distortion of the workpiece were analyzed. Results show that the angular distortion gets smaller in deeper water, and that the longitudinal residual stress gets smaller as water flows faster.
Effect of Residual Stress on Hydrogen Diffusion in Flat Butt Welding Joints

Abstract:Flat butt welding is commonly used to construct large welded structures, such as ships. Under high temperatures during the welding process, the hydrogen-containing compound in the arc welding decomposes into monoatomic hydrogen, which is dissolved in the molten pool in large amounts. High-strength steel, widely used for large ship structures, is sensitive to welding residual stress. Non-uniform welding residual stresses in such structures could facilitate the diffusion and accumulation of hydrogen in the steel, leading to excessive hydrogen localized at the welded joints. This behavior can cause hydrogen embrittlement, threatening the safety and reliability of ship structures. In this study, based on the thermal elastic-plastic theory and the theory of residual stress-induced hydrogen diffusion, a three-dimensional finite element analysis thermodynamic model for the flat butt welding joints of high-strength steel was established, the welding process was simulated, and the distribution law for the welding residual stress field was obtained. Then the sequential coupling calculation of hydrogen diffusion was performed by defining the welding residual stress field of flat butt welding joint of high strength steel as the pre-defined field, and the hydrogen diffusion behavior under the welding residual stress field was obtained. The results revealed large residual stresses in the weld and heat-affected zone of the butt welded joints of high-strength steel plates. As the distance from the weld increased, the level of welding residual stress decreased rapidly. The welding residual stress affected the hydrogen diffusion behavior, and hydrogen was enriched in regions with high residual stress. Moreover, hydrogen-induced cracking occurred easily in the weld and heat-affected zone. These results can provide theoretical support for ensuring the safety and reliability of large ship structures.

Abstract:A method based on newly presented state space formulations is developed for analyzing the bending, vibration and stability of laminated transversely isotropic rectangular plates with simply supported edges. By introducing two displacement functions and two stress functions, two independent state equations were constructed based on the three-dimensional elasticity equations for transverse isotropy. The original differential equations are thus decoupled with the order reduced that will facilitate obtaining solutions of various problems. For the simply supported rectangular plate, two relations between the state variables at the top and bottom surfaces were established. In particular, for the free vibration (stability) problem, it is found that there exist two independent classes: One corresponds to the pure in-plane vibration (stability) and the other to the general bending vibration (stability). Numerical examples are finally presented and the effects of some parameters are discussed.

Abstract:In engineering application of explosion welding of large-sized Ti/steel plates,welding defects are always found in the particular area of plate's boundary.In order to solve this problem,the dynamic process of explosion welding is investigated by the numerical simulation.Folding deformation can be discovered during the explosion welding based on the research on the morphological changes of the flyer plate at different times.The calculation results are in good agreement with the experiments.The studies show that folding deformation is a crucial problem which should be noticed in the process of explosive welding.The reasons for the folding deformation are discussed in the paper.The conclusion can provide a reference for the development of explosion welding technology.

Abstract:The mechanical interaction between welded panel and fixture has a remarkable influence on the distribution of weld induced residual stress and distortion.Unfortunately,the influence of fixture is not generally included in conventional numerical simulations of welding process.In the present study,it is proposed that the numerical models in which the mechanical interaction between welded panel and fixture is considered as contact pair in the finite element analysis(FEA) of welding process.This could make the FEA of welding process more scientific and accurate.The fixture constraint plays an important role in accurate modeling of welding process.In the simulations,various mechanical constraint boundary conditions in welding process were thought about to establish the relationships of the normal and tangential mechanical interactions between welded panel and fixture. In Free model,the fixture restraint was not considered.In Mech model,the displacements of nodes where welded panel contacted with fixture were restricted in x,y,z directions.Hard model and Tabular model were contact models which included the fixture.In the normal direction,once welded panel and fixture were in contact,the transmitted contact pressure could be infinite in Hard model.While data pairs of contact pressure vs over-closure or clearance were specified to define a piecewise-linear relationship in the normal direction in Tabular model.A penalty friction coefficient of 0.3 was applied in tangential direction in both Hard and Tabular models.Fixture and welded panel were separated and the contact relationships were removed after the welding process in both Hard and Tabular models. The simulation results of contact models including fixture were more accurate,compared to models containing only welded panel with rigid restrictions.The distortion mode of welded panels under different fixture constraint conditions corresponded well with experimental results.The differences between the distributions of transverse stresses on top and bottom surfaces of welded panel at the beginning of welding process had a crucial influence on the distortion mode of welded panel.
Toward Stabilizing the Keyhole in Laser Spot Welding of Aluminum: Numerical Analysis

Abstract:The inherent instability of laser welding, particularly keyhole instability, poses significant challenges in industrial applications, leading to defects such as porosities that compromise weld quality. Various forces act on the keyhole and molten pool during laser welding, influencing process stability. These forces are categorized into those promoting keyhole opening and penetration (e.g., recoil pressure) and those promoting keyhole collapse (e.g., surface tension, Darcy's damping forces), increasing instability and defect likelihood. This paper provides a comprehensive instability analysis to uncover key factors affecting keyhole and process instability, presenting future avenues for improving laser welding stability. Using a novel numerical method for simulating laser spot welding on aluminum with COMSOL Multiphysics 5.6, we investigated the effect of laser pulse shaping on keyhole and process instability. Our analysis focused on keyhole morphology, fluid flow behaviour, and force analysis. The results indicated that the curvature effect, Marangoni effect, and Darcy's damping force are primary contributors to instability, with the curvature effect and Darcy's damping force being the most dominant. Additionally, erratic and high-velocity magnitudes induce intense fluid flow behaviour, exacerbating keyhole instability. Moreover, single/quadruple peak triangular and variant rectangular ramp-down pulse shapes produced the least instability, while multi-pulse rectangular shapes exhibited intense instability. It was found that combining triangular/rectangular pulse shapes can reduce force and keyhole instability by smoothing spontaneous force spikes, resulting in a more stabilized welding process. Controlling fluid flow and abrupt force changes with appropriate pulse shaping is key to defect-free welded products.

Abstract:This paper presents a study on the instability of an inverted cantilevered plate with an inhomogeneous cross-section in axial flow from both theory and experiment. The plate is free at the leading edge and clamped at the trailing one. It has a cross-section with discontinuity, bringing difficulty in solving the fluid–structure interaction equation by the traditional methods. We study this problem in state space and transfer its solution into a function approximation problem. We bring no approximation at the first equation level, and the derived instability equation is on the continuum. A numerical scheme is proposed to solve the instability equation. Series expansion and least square method apply to the numerical solutions. The convergence and reliability of the present method are entirely tested. This present modeling method preserves the original information of the problem and facilitates the exploration of the effects of inhomogeneity. Based on the present continuum instability equation, prediction formulas for critical dynamic pressure and instability slope of an inhomogeneous plate are first given and verified. They can apply to the stability prediction of arbitrary cross-sectional plates and have application potential for the plate design. In addition, we report an optimized stiffness distribution of the plate for the maximum critical dynamic pressure. Finally, a wind tunnel test is designed and implemented. A comparative study shows that the present method and prediction formula agree well with the experiment. The present modeling method for a fluid–structure interaction problem in a continuous sense, avoiding approximation at the beginning level, can serve as another new way to address the static instability problem of plates.

Abstract:Stiffened panel structure is one of the most commonly used structure type in ship and offshore engineering, aeronautics and astronautics and other fields. The basic joint type of stiffened panel structure is welding. One important factor affecting welding quality is mechanical boundary condition. The present work aims to obtain the influence of welding mechanical boundary condition on the residual stress and distortion of a stiffened-panel. Thermal elastic-plastic finite element method (FEM) is used to calculate the welding distortion and residual stress of a stiffened-panel under different mechanical boundary conditions. Welding distortion and residual stress at typical positions of the stiffened-panel are calculated. The results show that mechanical boundary conditions mainly affect the welding deformation and have little influence on the residual stress of stiffened-panels. Symmetric boundary condition can not only refrain localized deformation effectively but also decrease the overall bending magnitude of stiffened panels middle cross-section.

Abstract:In the past decades, thin-plate weldments have been increasingly used in various engineering structures to meet the requirements of lightweight. However, deformation induced by welding process has a negative effect on assembly accuracy and structural integrity. Therefore, it is critical to predict welding deformation and then to control or reduce the total deformation. Because the thermal elastic plastic FEM has the advantage of high computational accuracy, an attempt was made to predict the welding deformation of a large-scale thin-plate welded structure in this study. Based on the commercial software MSC. Marc, a thermal elastic plastic FEM with the consideration of material nonlinearity, geometrical nonlinearity, and boundary nonlinearity was developed to simulate the welding deformation of large-scale welded structures. The effectiveness of the developed computational approach was verified by the experimental measurements. Moreover, the mechanism of buckling distortion in a large-scale stiffened panel structure was investigated based on the simulated results. In addition, the influences of heat input, welding procedures, and constraint condition on welding deformation were also examined numerically.

Abstract:A numerical simulation method was used to analyze the evolution process of arc welded plastic strain in thin stainless steel plates. The calculated results demonstrate that both of longitudinal and transverse plastic strains in the weld and its periphery during welding process were compressive. The tensile unloading generated in the cooling stage could not cancel the pre-existing compressive plastic strain, which made the residual plastic strain in the weld and its periphery remain in compressive state. The width of compressive plastic strain area was obviously wider than that of "mechanics melting zone" in the stainless steel.
