Abstract:Herein, we present a facile synthesis of hierarchical carbon frameworks with microporous skeletons and interconnected meso/macropores by employing poly(vinylidene chloride-co-methyl acrylate)-b-polystyrene copolymers as precursors. The obtained porosity can be tuned over a broad range via well-selected block proportions of the precursor, enabling its advantageous applications in target-oriented energy storage systems.

Abstract:Porous carbon materials are of interest in many applications because of their high surface area and physicochemical properties. Conventional syntheses can only produce randomly porous materials, with little control over the pore-size distributions, let alone mesostructures. Recent breakthroughs in the preparation of other porous materials have resulted in the development of methods for the preparation of mesoporous carbon materials with extremely high surface areas and ordered mesostructures, with potential applications as catalysts, separation media, and advanced electronic materials in many scientific disciplines. Current syntheses can be categorized as either hard-template or soft-template methods. Both are examined in this Review along with procedures for surface functionalization of the carbon materials obtained.

Abstract:We design a novel solvent- and self-template strategy to fabricate carbon materials with ultramicro-, supermicro- and mesopores through a simple solvothermal reaction of phloroglucinol and terephthaldehyde in dioxane using acetic acid as the catalyst, followed by carbonization. Dioxane serves simultaneously as a solvent in the reaction system and a template to generate mesopores (3.6 nm). Meanwhile, phloroglucinol/terephthaldehyde polymeric organic frameworks act as a self-template to produce regular and well-developed ultramicropores (0.54 nm) and some supermicropores (0.86 and 13 nm) during carbonization. High specific surface area (1003 m(2) g(-1)) coupled with hierarchical porous structure endow the resultant carbon electrode excellent electrochemical properties including a satisfactory specific capacitance (214 F g(-1) at 1.0 A g(-1)), excellent rate capability (154 F g(-1) at a very high current density of 50 A g-1) as well as superb long-term cycling stability (95.5% retention of initial capacitance after 10000 cycles) in alkaline electrolyte. Compared with traditional synthetic strategy for porous carbons, the present approach can be easily carried out, avoiding tedious procedure, customized hard/soft template or extra activation step, and thus highlights new opportunities towards the simple and highly efficient synthesis of well-designed porous carbons for supercapacitor applications. Abstract:Cellulosic biomass carbon based diatomite composite powders are synthesised in situ via the hypoxia pyrolysis method, and the micro-structure, surface morphology and performance of the as-prepared samples are characterised. When the concentration of the diatomite increases, the carbonaceous structure of the composites is highly disordered, the surface functional groups increase, and the typical porous structure of cellulosic biomass carbon based porous diatomite composite is measured. The adsorption capacity of organic dyes onto biomass carbon composite is enhanced. As the composite has many pore channels in the mesoporous region (especially for 2∼10 nm), porous diatomite with excellent hydraulic conductivity favours a conducting MB solution and improves the chemisorption performance (153.2 mg/g) of biomass carbon in the composite.

Abstract:Mesoporous carbons were synthesized by organic–organic self-assembly of triblock copolymer F127 and resorcinol–furfural oligomers. The effects of the mass ratio of F127 to oligomers (F127/RF), reaction time of resorcinol with furfural and furfural/resorcinol ratio (F/R) on pore architecture and phase purity of mesoporous carbons were investigated. Resorcinol–furfural oligomers prefer to mix with hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blocks rather than with hydrophobic poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) blocks, and thereby cause a swelling of the hydrophilic volume and force the hydrophilic/hydrophobic interface toward low interfacial curvature. As a result, mesostructures including disordered, 3D body-centered cubic (Im3m), 2D hexagonal (p6m), wormlike and mesocellular structures were obtained by increasing the mass ratio of F127/RF. The physiochemical properties of oligomers would determine the quality of interactions between F127 and oligomers, which can affect swelling extent of PEO blocks and the resultant mesostructures. At the same F127/RF ratio, a mesostructure transition from Im3m to p6m to disorder was observed as the degree of polymerization of oligomers increased. This transition is attributed to the decreased thermodynamic driving force for oligomers to mix with PEO blocks. Decreasing F/R ratio could improve the hydrophilic properties of oligomers, which is favor for forming highly ordered mesostructures.

Abstract:The morphology and porosity of zeolite play a significant role in the activity and selectivity of catalytic reactions. It is a dream to optionally modulate zeolite morphology by regulating the crystallization process on the basis of comprehensively understanding the mechanisms. Herein, a series of MTW zeolite mesocrystals can be consciously fabricated with morphologies from a dense structure to a loose one of an oriented nanocrystallite aggregate by changing the H2O/SiO2 ratio. Their intertwined classical/nonclassical crystallization processes are investigated comprehensively. The results indicate that the crystallization of MTW zeolite takes place by a chain of events, including the formation of wormlike particles (WLPs), their aggregation, and crystallization of aggregates. MTW with a loose structure mainly crystallizes by an internal reorganization after a fast aggregation of WLPs in a concentrated system. On the other hand, the dense MTW is realized via the co-occurrence of a coalescence of the participating WLPs during its crystal growth with a slower rate in a dilute system. Moreover, the advantages of MTW with a loose structure are confirmed through cumene cracking and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene transformation. This method could pave the way for the synthesis of other zeolites with diverse morphologies and/or mesoporosities via subtle regulation of the crystallization pathway.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous (2-50 nm) carbon films were fabricated using cooperative self-assembly of a phenolic resin oligomer with a novel block copolymer template (poly(styrene-block-N,N-dimethyl-n-octadecylamine p-styrenesulfonate), (PS-b-PSS-DMODA)) synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Due to the high Tg of the PS segment and the strong interactions between the phenolic resin and the PSS-DMODA, the segmental rearrangement is kinetically hindered relative to the cross-linking rate of the phenolic resin, which inhibits long-range ordering and yields a poorly ordered mesoporous carbon with a broad pore size distribution. However, relatively short exposure (2 h) to controlled vapor pressures of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) yields significant improvements in the long-range ordering and narrows the pore size distribution. The average pore size increases as the solvent vapor pressure during annealing increases, but an upper limit of p/p0 = 0.85 exists above which the films dewet rapidly during solvent vapor annealing. This approach can be extended using mesityl oxide, which has similar solvent qualities to MEK, but is not easily removed by ambient air drying after solvent annealing. This residual solvent can impact the morphology that develops during cross-linking of the films. These results illustrate the ability to fine-tune the mesostructure of ordered mesoporous carbon films through simple changes in the processing without any compositional changes in the initial cast film.
Facile Preparation, Structural Control and Spheroidization of Mesoporous Carbons Using Hydrolyzed Water Glass As a Template

Abstract:Mesoporous carbons (MC) with controlled pore structure were synthesized using hydrolyzed water glass (sodium silicate) as hard template precursor. The mixture of carbon precursor (resorcinol-formaldehyde) sol and silica sol followed by Sol-Gel process generated a polymer/silica dual hydrogels. After ambient drying, carbonization and HF etching, mesoporous carbons with developed mesoporous structure were obtained. The hydrolysis conditions of water glass including hydrolysis temperature and hydrolysis time, and the weight ratio of RF polymer to silica were studied respectively to investigate their effects on the mesoporous structure. The microstructures of the mesoporous carbons were characterized by N-2 adsorption, SEM and TEM observations. It was found that as-prepared mesoporous carbons displayed disordered mesoporous channels which replicated from the initial colloidal silica networks. The average mesopore size could be precisely adjusted in the range from 6 nm to 12 nm by tuning the hydrolysis time and hydrolysis temperature, while the total porosity could be controlled by changing the weight ratio of polymer precursor to silica. Furthermore, with the assistant of suspension polymerization and spray drying technologies, spherical mesoporous carbons with millimetre and micrometer-sized particles were drying technologies, spherical mesoporous carbons with millimetre and micrometer-sized particles were produced, respectively. The present work provides a low-cost approach for deliberately controlling the mesoporous structure and spherical morphology to mesoporous carbons that can be extended to many different applications.
Control of ordering and structure in soft templated mesoporous carbon films by use of selective solvent additives

Abstract:The structure of ordered mesoporous carbons fabricated using poly(styrene-block-N,N,-dimethyl-n-octadecylamine p-styrenesulfonate) (PS-b-PSS-DMODA) as the template and phenolic resin (resol) as the carbon source can be easily manipulated by inclusion of low concentrations of low volatility selective solvents in the casting solution. Casting from neat methyl ethyl ketone yields a disordered structure even upon thermal annealing. However, addition of both dioctyl phthalate (DOP, PS selective) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, resol and PSS-DMODA selective) at modest concentrations to this casting solution provides sufficient mobility to produce highly ordered films with cylindrical mesopores. The DOP acts to swell the hydrophobic domain and can more than double the mesopore size, while the DMSO acts to swell the resol phase. Moreover, the surface area of the mesoporous carbons increases significantly as the meosopore size increases. This is a result of the decrease in wall thickness, which can be ascertained by the constant d-spacing of the mesostructure as the pore size increases. This behavior is counter to the typical effect of pore swelling agents that increase the pore size and decrease the surface area. Moreover, with only 4 wt % DOP/DMSO in the solution (20 wt % relative to solids), the scattering profiles exhibit many orders of diffraction, even upon carbonization, which is not typically observed for soft templated films. Variation in the concentration of DOP and DMSO during casting enables facile tuning of the structure of mesoporous carbon films.

Abstract:Tailored mesoporous carbon nanostructures (TMCNs) featuring distinctive and tunable morphologies have gained tremendous interest over the past decades. These materials, being ambulant, have broadened the application spectrum. This review aims to provide an authoritative reference regarding the synthesis pathways, potential applications, key challenges, opportunities and future research directions. Regulating the reaction parameters, such as carbonization temperature, precursors types and concentrations, and molecular weight of structural directing agents, was crucial in this context. This review critically evaluates various techniques used to prepare TMCNs such as (i) hard templating, (ii) soft templating, (iii) modified Stöber method, (iv) space confined assembly, and (v) spray pyrolysis with an emphasis on underlying mechanisms and the impact of synthesis methods on the properties of the final product. Considering the importance of TMCN textural properties in the application spectrum, particular focus has been given to their precise tuning to obtain delicate architectural designs. Then, the applications of TMCNs with pre-defined morphologies are discussed in energy storage and conversion, catalysis, adsorption, and biomedicine. Finally, a summary of key aspects and challenges has been provided to put them into a perspective. This review presents the important research needs to foster the controlled synthesis and applications of mesoporous carbon.

Abstract:Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of carbohydrates is an economic and sustainable technique for the synthesis of carbon materials. However, the assembly of carbohydrates with soft templates is susceptible to hydrolysis, degradation, and relatively high HTC temperature. Thus, it is still challenging to control the HTC/soft templating of carbohydrates and prepare mesoporous carbon with specific properties. Herein, a simple and effective self-transformation strategy is proposed to improve the HTC/soft templating, which introduces an insoluble melamine sulfate into the formation processes. Mechanism studies indicate that the assembly of d-fructose with soft templates is greatly promoted by coassembling with the gradually released melamine sulfate. As a result, carbonaceous composites with a flower-like structure and N-doping were synthesized. Further, ordered mesoporous carbons with N-doping are obtained after calcination. The obtained carbons exhibit outstanding ability for heavy metal adsorption and supercapacitors. Significantly, this self-transformation strategy will open up new avenues for synthesizing carbohydrate-based functional carbons.
Facile Synthesis of Hierarchically Porous Carbons from Dual Colloidal Crystal/Block Copolymer Template Approach

Abstract:A facile dual-templating approach is demonstrated to prepare hierarchically ordered macro-/mesoporous carbons. Monodispersed silica colloidal crystals are used as a hard template, amphiphilic triblock copolymer PEO-PPO-PEO as a soft template, and soluble resols as a carbon source. The procedure involves packing and aging of silica microspheres, evaporation-induced organic-organic assembly of mesostructures in the void of microspheres, thermosetting and carbonization of phenolic formaldehyde (PF), and removal of silica scaffolds by HF. The obtained porous carbons have a highly ordered face-centered cubic macrostructure with tunable pore sizes of 230-430 nm and interconnected windows with a size of 30-65 nm. The rigid silica hard templates can prevent the shrinkage of the mesostructure during the thermosetting and carbonization process, resulting in large cell parameters (similar to 18 nm) and pore sizes (similar to 11 nm). The bimodal porous carbon materials have large BET surface areas (up to 760 m(2)/g), large pore volumes (similar to 1.25 cm(3)/g), and partially graphitized frameworks. With the increase in the silica sphere diameter, the BET surface areas and the window sizes increase. The hierarchically ordered carbon structures show strong diffraction at wavelengths of 500-690 nm depending on the treatment used.

Abstract:The crystallization of zeolite beta in a dry gel system is found to follow the orientated attachment growth route, escorted with a temporal morphology change from bulky gel, through aggregation of the particulate to large zeolitic crystals. Modification of the precrystallized gel with organosilanes can be used to tune the morphology of the ultimate beta. When hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HTS) is employed to modify precrystallized gel, a resumed secondary growth produces a hybrid mesocrystal of agglomerated nanozeolites. Combustive removal of organics leads to the formation of hierarchically porous zeolite beta of 100 to 160nm, composed of nanocrystal building units ranging from 20 to 40nm, with a noticeable micropore volume of 0.19mLg(-1) and a meso/macropore size between 5 and 80nm. Conversely, when 1,8-bis(triethoxysilyl)octane (BTO) is utilized to modify the same precrystallized gel, assemblages of discrete beta nanozeolite of around 35nm are generated. These assemblages construct a hierarchical zeolite beta with a micropore volume of 0.20mLg(-1) and auxiliary pores ranging from 5 to 100nm. Both organosilanes bring about well-connected hierarchical pore networks. HTS has little effect on the BrOnsted/Lewis acidity, whereas BTO causes a substantial reduction of strong BrOnsted acid sites. The hierarchical beta zeolite-supported Pt catalyst exhibits improved catalytic performance for the hydroisomerization of n-heptane.

Abstract:Carbon is a fascinating element that can be found in a wide spectrum of materials and plays a significant role in diverse disciplines across the scientific community. Carbon nanomaterials take many forms with numerous applications. Controllably tailoring carbon nanomaterials at the molecular scale can be considered as a basic innovation yet remains a significant challenge because of carbon's intrinsic structural and chemical stability. Herein, we report a molecular scissor to efficiently tailor carbon nanomaterials of different dimensions at a molecular level. By using the Mg/Zn bimetallic effect and CO2 molecules, a molecular scissor was invented to engineer the surface of carbon nanomaterials with highly interconnected graphene pillared superstructures. The molecular scissor redesigned the carbon materials with improved surface properties for use in various applications. For energy storage application, both ultrahigh surface area and conductivity can be achieved concurrently with substantial ion-reserved accommodation and rapid mass-transfer expressway. As a demonstration, a flexible solid-state supercapacitor based on the surface-tailored carbon fiber was developed with Polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)/Na2SO4 gel electrolytes. It delivered a remarkably high energy density of 4.63 mW h cm–3 at a power density of 3520 mW cm–3. This work paves a new way to reinvent carbon materials at the molecular scale and promote their applications for energy storage, sensing, environmental remediation, and healthcare.

Design of Amphiphilic ABC Triblock Copolymer for Templating Synthesis of Large-Pore Ordered Mesoporous Carbons with Tunable Pore Wall Thickness

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a successful synthesis of highly ordered mesoporous carbons with large pores and tunable pore walls by using a home-designed ABC amphiphilic triblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate)-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PMMA-b-PS) with gradient hydrophilicity as a template and resol as a carbon source via the solvent evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) strategy. SAXS, TEM, HRSEM, and N-2 sorption characterizations show that the obtained carbon products possess ordered face-centered cubic (fcc) close-packed (Fm (3) over barm) mesostructure with large pores of about 20.0 nm. By simply adjusting the resol/template ratios, the wall thickness of products can easily be tuned in the range of 10-19 nm. For the first time, we observed numerous large micro/mesopores in the carbon pore walls, originating from the removal of PMMA segment during the pyrolysis. The obtained mesoporous carbons have an extra-large lattice constant of up to 55.0 nm, high surface areas of similar to 900 m(2)/g, and pore volume of similar to 0.6 cm(3)/g, as well as high stability even in concentrated KOH solution. The gradient hydrophilicity of the ABC triblock copolymer template facilitates the continuous invasion of resol precursor molecules along the PEO to PMMA segments of the spherical PEO-PMMA-PS micelles, tuning the pore wall thickness. The rationally designed ABC-type triblock copolymers make it possible to synthesize ordered mesoporous carbons with ultrathick pore walls as well its excellent chemical and thermal stability.

Abstract:Diffusion limitation in micropores of zeolites leads to a demand for optimization of zeolite morphology and/or porosity. However, tailoring crystallization processes to realize targeted morphology/porosity is a major challenge in zeolite synthesis. On the basis of previous work on the salt-aided, seed-induced route, the template effect of seeds on the formation of micropores, mesopores and even macropores was further explored to selectively achieve desired hierarchical architectures. By carefully investigating the crystallization processes of two typical samples with distinct crystal morphologies, namely, 1) nanocrystallite-oriented self-assembled ZSM-5 zeolite and 2) enriched intracrystal mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolite, a detailed mechanism is proposed to clarify the role of silicalite-1 seeds in the formation of diverse morphologies in a salt-rich heterogeneous system, combined with the transformation of seed-embedded aluminosilicate gel. On the basis of these conclusions, the morphologies/porosities of products were precisely tailored by deliberately adjusting the synthesis parameters (KF/Si, tetrapropylammonium bromide/Si and H2O/Si ratios and type of organic template) to regulate the kinetics of seed dissolution and seed-induced recrystallization. This work may not only provide a practical route to control zeolite crystallization for tailoring crystal morphology, but also expands the knowledge of crystal growth mechanisms in a heterogeneous system.
In-situ GISAXS Investigation of the Structure Evolution Mechanism of Template Removal of Ordered Mesoporous Films Prepared Via a Soft-Templating Method

Abstract:The soft-templating method is important in the preparation of ordered mesoporous carbon materials. In the process, careful removal of the block template is a critical step in obtaining a highly ordered mesostructure before carbonization. In this study, the dynamic structure evolution of template removal by means of calcination using both high (3 degrees C/min) and low (1 degrees C/min) heating rates was monitored using an in situ GISAXS technique. The real-time d-spacing and order degree parameters including the mesochannel dislocation and grain size of the ordered structure were determined as a function of calcination time. The results showed that the entire structure evolution process could be divided into three stages according to variable rates of d-spacing: glass transition stage, molten phase transition stage, and pyrolysis stage. In the first stage, thermal expansion transition into template shrinkage was observed as the polymer chain transitioned from a rigid to a softer state. Shrinkage of the template occurred, while a highly ordered mesostructured remained. In the second stage, the template became flexible after the molten phase transition, and the rate of structure change gradually increased, accompanied by mesochannel dislocation. Fast pyrolysis occurred in the last stage, the ordered structure was destroyed, and internal stress was released. This phenomenon was also clearly observed when the heating rate was 3 degrees C/min. The final ratio of dislocation comparing the state before and after template removal was 9.13, which is significantly higher than the value of 5.84 observed with a heating rate of 1 degrees C/min. The results indicated that the ordered mesostructure after template removal was determined by not only the critical temperature but also the heating profile during the entire process of structure evolution. A hypothetical mechanism is proposed to explain the structure evolution of template removal for ordered mesoporous films prepared by a soft-templating method. A reasonable design for a heating profile for template removal based on this in situ GISAXS study can be an effective method for improving the quality of mesoporous films.

Abstract:Mesoporous SiO2 with special short open axis-like morphology was successfully fabricated by using cotton fibers as bio-templates. Mesostructure and morphology of the samples were systematically studied by changing the cotton/SiO2 weight ratio and hydrothermal treating temperature. Textural property and morphology of the obtained mesoporous SiO2 were characterized by the combination of X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption-desorption experiments and scanning electron microscope. Finally, batch adsorption of methylene blue was performed to detect the adsorption capacity of the cotton co-templated materials.

Abstract:The design of carbon sorbents traditionally focuses on the control of pore structure and the number and type of surface functional groups. The present paper explores the potential of also controlling the carbon crystal structure, or graphene layer orientation, in the immediate vicinity of the internal surfaces. We hypothesize that this crystal structure influences the properties of the carbon surfaces and affects the number and type of active sites for functionalization. Here a series of mesoporous carbons are fabricated by capillary infiltration of mesophase pitch (naphthalene homopolymer) into a series of controlled pore glass templates of different characteristic pore size followed by carbonization and template etching. The liquid crystalline mesogens are known to adopt perpendicular alignment (anchoring) at liquid/silica interfaces, which after carbonization lead to a high concentration of graphene edge sites at the inner surfaces. These surfaces are shown to have elevated chemical reactivity, and the pore structures are shown to be consistent with predictions of a quantitative model based on the negative replica concept. Overall, the use of mesophase pitch for templated mesoporous carbons allows systematic and simultaneous control of both pore structure and interfacial crystal structure through the well-defined rules of liquid crystal surface anchoring.
