Abstract:Porous carbon materials are of interest in many applications because of their high surface area and physicochemical properties. Conventional syntheses can only produce randomly porous materials, with little control over the pore-size distributions, let alone mesostructures. Recent breakthroughs in the preparation of other porous materials have resulted in the development of methods for the preparation of mesoporous carbon materials with extremely high surface areas and ordered mesostructures, with potential applications as catalysts, separation media, and advanced electronic materials in many scientific disciplines. Current syntheses can be categorized as either hard-template or soft-template methods. Both are examined in this Review along with procedures for surface functionalization of the carbon materials obtained.

Abstract:Abstract Mesoporous silica can be synthesized by either the alkaline route or the acidic route, both using surfactants as templates. Morphological transformations of mesoporous silica can produce various hierarchical orders. Different morphologies are produced under different synthetic conditions. In the alkaline route, the surfactant/silicate liquid crystal system undergoes phase transformation to form vesicles and further transforms to the hexagonal phase. The results are tubule-within-tubule and hollow pillar-within-sphere structures depending on cosurfactant/surfactant composition. Using nitric acid in the acidic route, one can obtain hierarchical ropes or gyroids depending on stirring conditions. Ammonia hydrothermal treatment can induce further morphological transformation to nanotubes of mesoporous silica.

Abstract:One-dimensional mesoporous polymer/carbon nanofilaments with controlled mesostructures have been prepared by an infiltration process of phenolic oligomers/surfactant into anodized alumina membranes followed by carbonization. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen sorption and X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigations show that as-prepared polymer nanofilaments possess ordered mesoporous structure tunable from circular hexagonal to cubic and concentric lamellar mesostructures. After carbonization, carbon nanofilaments with corresponding circular hexagonal, cubic and concentric lamellar mesoporous structure are obtained.

Abstract:Recently, extensive works have been devoted to the morphology control of mesoporous materials with respect to their use in various applications. In this paper, we used two kinds of mesoporous silica, SBA-15 rods and spheres as hard templates to synthesize morphology-controllable mesoporous metal oxides. By carefully controlling the loading of metal precursors in the mesopores of the hard template, mesoporous Co3O4 and CeO2 with different morphologies, such as micrometer-sized rod, hollow sphere, saucer-like sphere, and solid sphere were conveniently obtained. The structural properties of these materials were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM and TEM. In addition, it is found that the differences observed in the textural properties of the two mesoporous metal oxides nanocasted from the same template can be attributed to the properties of metal precursors and the interaction between metal oxide and SiO2. Thus-obtained mesoporous metal oxides with such special morphologies may have a potential application in the field of environmental catalytic oxidation.

Abstract:A facile dual-templating approach is demonstrated to prepare hierarchically ordered macro-/mesoporous carbons. Monodispersed silica colloidal crystals are used as a hard template, amphiphilic triblock copolymer PEO-PPO-PEO as a soft template, and soluble resols as a carbon source. The procedure involves packing and aging of silica microspheres, evaporation-induced organic-organic assembly of mesostructures in the void of microspheres, thermosetting and carbonization of phenolic formaldehyde (PF), and removal of silica scaffolds by HF. The obtained porous carbons have a highly ordered face-centered cubic macrostructure with tunable pore sizes of 230-430 nm and interconnected windows with a size of 30-65 nm. The rigid silica hard templates can prevent the shrinkage of the mesostructure during the thermosetting and carbonization process, resulting in large cell parameters (similar to 18 nm) and pore sizes (similar to 11 nm). The bimodal porous carbon materials have large BET surface areas (up to 760 m(2)/g), large pore volumes (similar to 1.25 cm(3)/g), and partially graphitized frameworks. With the increase in the silica sphere diameter, the BET surface areas and the window sizes increase. The hierarchically ordered carbon structures show strong diffraction at wavelengths of 500-690 nm depending on the treatment used.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous (2-50 nm) carbon films were fabricated using cooperative self-assembly of a phenolic resin oligomer with a novel block copolymer template (poly(styrene-block-N,N-dimethyl-n-octadecylamine p-styrenesulfonate), (PS-b-PSS-DMODA)) synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Due to the high Tg of the PS segment and the strong interactions between the phenolic resin and the PSS-DMODA, the segmental rearrangement is kinetically hindered relative to the cross-linking rate of the phenolic resin, which inhibits long-range ordering and yields a poorly ordered mesoporous carbon with a broad pore size distribution. However, relatively short exposure (2 h) to controlled vapor pressures of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) yields significant improvements in the long-range ordering and narrows the pore size distribution. The average pore size increases as the solvent vapor pressure during annealing increases, but an upper limit of p/p0 = 0.85 exists above which the films dewet rapidly during solvent vapor annealing. This approach can be extended using mesityl oxide, which has similar solvent qualities to MEK, but is not easily removed by ambient air drying after solvent annealing. This residual solvent can impact the morphology that develops during cross-linking of the films. These results illustrate the ability to fine-tune the mesostructure of ordered mesoporous carbon films through simple changes in the processing without any compositional changes in the initial cast film.

Abstract:The structure of ordered mesoporous carbons fabricated using poly(styrene-block-N,N,-dimethyl-n-octadecylamine p-styrenesulfonate) (PS-b-PSS-DMODA) as the template and phenolic resin (resol) as the carbon source can be easily manipulated by inclusion of low concentrations of low volatility selective solvents in the casting solution. Casting from neat methyl ethyl ketone yields a disordered structure even upon thermal annealing. However, addition of both dioctyl phthalate (DOP, PS selective) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, resol and PSS-DMODA selective) at modest concentrations to this casting solution provides sufficient mobility to produce highly ordered films with cylindrical mesopores. The DOP acts to swell the hydrophobic domain and can more than double the mesopore size, while the DMSO acts to swell the resol phase. Moreover, the surface area of the mesoporous carbons increases significantly as the meosopore size increases. This is a result of the decrease in wall thickness, which can be ascertained by the constant d-spacing of the mesostructure as the pore size increases. This behavior is counter to the typical effect of pore swelling agents that increase the pore size and decrease the surface area. Moreover, with only 4 wt % DOP/DMSO in the solution (20 wt % relative to solids), the scattering profiles exhibit many orders of diffraction, even upon carbonization, which is not typically observed for soft templated films. Variation in the concentration of DOP and DMSO during casting enables facile tuning of the structure of mesoporous carbon films.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica has been extensively studied for a wide variety of applications such as transport and storage vehicles of guest materials, where it is critical but remains challenging to control the pore structure at a macroscopic scale. Herein, aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays with thicknesses of up to millimeters have been used as templates to produce macroscopically oriented mesopores in the resulting silica material. The pore size, length, and number density were tuned by varying the diameter, length, and number density of CNTs. When surfactants were co-assembled with the silica precursor, the produced ordered mesopores from the surfactant could further interconnect the macroscopically oriented mesopores. The sizes, densities, and structures of the ordered mesopores have been controlled by varying the surfactants. This interconnected porous structure provided the material with unique advantages, and the use for adsorption of a guest chemical was studied as a demonstration.
Delicately Controlled Synthesis of Mesoporous Carbon Materials with Thin Pore Walls

Abstract:Mesoporous carbon materials with a range of pore sizes were synthesized by a delicately controlled procedure using disordered gamma-alumina as template and sucrose as carbon source. Under optimized conditions, the carbon materials had narrow pore size distribution, large surface area (> 1000 m(2).g(-1)), large pore volume (up to 3.82 cm(3).g(-1)), high mesopore ratio (> 99%), and thin pore walls with thickness of 1-2 graphene layers. In the present work, we employed three types of alumina, and investigated the correlation of their texture with that of the resultant carbon materials. A mechanism for the formation of the carbon materials was proposed and tested against experimental data. A carbon sample prepared by this method can approximately duplicate the pore structure of the template, if the carbon layer in the precursor carbon-covered alumina is complete and sufficiently robust. The mesopores of the carbons had two sources, one from the removal of the template particles and the other from the original pores of the template. Calculated pore volumes strongly support the proposed mechanism.

Abstract:Major advances in the field of ordered mesoporous materials have been achieved in topological structure definition at the meso phase, and macroscale levels (shape and morphology) using molecular control during mesoporous materials synthesis. Examples include the use of block copolymers for the preparation of mesoporous materials with large pore sizes ($̆30 nm), the formation of mesoporous silica with 3D periodically ordered cage-structures, and the fabrication of selected mesoporous silica having designated macrostructures, including fibers, thin films and monoliths along with hollow and transparent hard spheres. The judicious integration of hydrogen—bonding interactions at the organic/inorganic interface with organic/inorganic domain assembly and the use of sol-gel and emulsion chemistry in acidic media proves to be a general route for the syntheses of mesoporous materials with potential applications in catalysis, sensors, separations, optoelectronics, and functional nanomaterial fabrication.

Abstract:We report a facile approach that can simultaneously control the morphology and surface chemistry of mesoporous materials from triblock copolymers. By doping phosphotungstic acid (PW), the self-assembled structures of polystyrene–poly(ethylene oxide)–polylactide (PS–PEO–PLA, SEL) triblock copolymer can be tuned. Besides core–shell cylinders and lamellae, disordered bicontinuous structures can be achieved in SEL/PW composites. After etching with NaOH, PLA domains and PW additive are removed simultaneously, giving mesoporous PS monoliths with controlled morphologies and PEO-coated pores. Also, we demonstrated that the prepared porous PS monoliths can be used as templates to fabricate inorganic nanostructures. This work provides new insight into the fabrication of functional mesoporous materials.

Abstract:Ordered three-dimensional (3D) large-pore mesoporous channels have been fabricated based on mesoporous silica SBA-15 and SBA-16 by a new synthesis strategy, which involves the introduction of organic co-solvents followed by a high temperature hydrothermal process. The previous small entrances (2.3 nm) for caged cubic mesoporous SBA-16 can be enlarged (up to 10.8 nm) by using this approach. These highly ordered mesoporous silica materials with large entrances have been verified to be suitable templates for the synthesis of ordered cubic carbon replicas with a novel ball-type pore structure.

Abstract:Mesoporous carbon (MC) has attracted extensive scientific and technological interest due to its fascinating and excellent properties. However, it remains a great challenge to synthesize MC materials with adjustable pore diameter and particle size, well-designed functionalities, uniform morphology, relatively high graphitization, and good repeatability. Herein, using mesoporous silicon (SiO2) as a template, we fabricated a locally ordered MC material with controllable pore size by the nanocasting strategy. The carbon material exhibited a large specific surface area (similar to 979 m(2)/g), relative high graphitization degree, adjustable pore size (2.85-5.79 nm), and particle diameter (79-194 nm). Different experimental conditions were regulated; the organic molecules (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) played an important role in the change of particle diameter, while the hydrothermal reaction time accurately controlled the pore size. This simple preparation approach simultaneously realized the independent design of the carbon structure and graphitization degree, which is conducive to the subsequent doping modification of carbon materials.

Abstract:Synthetic conditions such as temperature, stirring rate, ionic strength, acidity, and reactant ratios that affect the mesostructures and macrostructures of mesoporous materials have been extensively studied in the nonionic block copolymer templating system. Highly ordered SBA-15 materials with similar to100% rodlike morphologies (similar to1-2 mum long) have been obtained in the presence of inorganic salts. Synthesis conditions such as low temperature, low acidity, and low ionic strength that increase the induction time give rise to the morphologies of mesoporous silica with increased curvatures. The particle growth process of rodlike SBA-15 materials from solutions has been examined by directly observing the morphologies of particles as a function of time. A colloidal phase separation mechanism (CPSM) for the formation of mesoporous materials is proposed. It is suggested that the formation process of mesoporous materials involves three stages: (1) cooperative self-assembly of inorganic/organic composites; (2) formation of a new crystal-like phase rich in aggregates of block copolymer/silica species; and (3) phase separation of this liquid crystal-like phase from the solution and further growth of solid mesostructures driven by further condensation of silica species. The morphologies of mesoporous materials are developed after the phase separation stage and influenced by the competition mainly between the free energy of mesostructure self-assembly (DeltaG) and the colloidal surface free energy (F), as well as other interactions such as the shearing force. When the phase separation stage occurs early, DeltaG is dominant and the macrostructure of mesoporous materials is developed together with the formation of mesostructure; therefore, mesoporous materials with crystal-like morphologies can be generated. The role of inorganic salts is well explained based on the CPSM by taking into account the colloidal interaction enhanced by inorganic salts. Cubic (Im (3) over barm) mesoporous single crystals have been obtained with exclusively rhombdodecahedron shapes (1-2 mum in size). Ultrathin microtoming TEM measurements confirm that such polyhedral particles are perfect single crystals. The different influences of hydrothermal treatments upon the mesostructures and macrostructures have been discussed in the hexagonal and cubic synthesis systems. By employing the CPSM, hexagonal mesoporous single crystals have been obtained in the absence of inorganic salts; the size limitation (similar to1-2 mum) of mesoporous single crystals has also been discussed. Such understandings may be useful in the fabrication of mesoporous materials with well-defined, crystal-like morphologies.

Abstract:A facile aqueous pathway has been demonstrated for the synthesis of ordered mesoporous carbon materials with hexagonal or cubic structures through the self-assembly of phenol/formaldehyde resols and triblock copolymer templates. Highly ordered mesoporous carbons FDU-16 with body-centered cubic structure (space group Im3m) have been synthesized under a basic aqueous condition by using triblock copolymer Pluronic F127 (EO106PO70EO106) as a template. Hydrocarbon (hexadecane or decane) can be used in the Pluronic P123 (EO20PO70EO20) system as a swelling agent to synthesize highly ordered mesoporous carbons FDU-15 with 2-D hexagonal (p6m) structure. The pore size of FDU-15 can be tailored from 4.1 to 6.8 nm by simply varying the hydrocarbon molecules. Mesoporous carbon materials FDU-14 with bicontinuous cubic (Ia3d) structure can be formed at a P123/phenol molar ratio higher than 0.04.
