Abstract:Highly ordered mesoporous carbons have been synthesized from a direct triblock-copolymer-templating process of organic-organic self-assembly. The organic precursors are phenol, formaldehyde, and a functional monomer of p-fluorophenol, and the organic structure directing agent is triblock copolymer Pluronic F127. Characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and nitrogen adsorption techniques reveals that the fluorinated carbons possess highly ordered mesostructures, high surface areas (693-998 m(2)/g) large pore sizes (3.0-4.4 nm), large pore volumes (0.43-0.70 cm(3)/g), and C-F covalent bonds after high-temperature carbonization at 900 degrees C. Various mesostructures such as 2D hexagonal and 3D body-centered cubic structures can be synthesized by simply tuning the ratios of p-fluorophenot/phenol or phenol/triblock copolymer. The fluorinated mesoporous carbon modified glassy carbon (GC) electrode exhibits higher electron transfer rate than both pure mesoporous carbon FDU-15 modified and bare GC electrodes. This result further indicates the fluorination of mesoporous carbons and the potential for fluorinated mesoporous carbons in electrocatalytic reactions.

Abstract:The effect of phenols reactivity with formaldehyde on the formation of ordered mesoporous carbons has been investigated. A strategy to accelerate the polymerization of phenolic resins by using strongly acidic conditions is proposed. The self-assembly of resorcinol-formaldehyde and block copolymers (e.g., F127) under highly acidic concentrations (e.g., 1.5 M HCl) is probably driven by the I+X-S+ mechanism and hydrogen bonding and affords a highly reproducible approach for synthesis of ordered mesoporous carbons. The synthesis can be readily scaled up with no change in sample quality. The carbon material obtained (denoted as C-ORNL-1) exhibits highly ordered hexagonal mesostructure, with a typical BET surface area of similar to 600 m(2)/g, pore size of 6.3 nm, and pore volume of similar to 0.60 cm(3)/g. One of the unique structural features of C-ORNL-1 is its high thermal stability; it can be graphitized at 2600 degrees C while considerable mesoporosity is maintained.

Abstract:A facile aqueous pathway has been demonstrated for the synthesis of ordered mesoporous carbon materials with hexagonal or cubic structures through the self-assembly of phenol/formaldehyde resols and triblock copolymer templates. Highly ordered mesoporous carbons FDU-16 with body-centered cubic structure (space group Im3m) have been synthesized under a basic aqueous condition by using triblock copolymer Pluronic F127 (EO106PO70EO106) as a template. Hydrocarbon (hexadecane or decane) can be used in the Pluronic P123 (EO20PO70EO20) system as a swelling agent to synthesize highly ordered mesoporous carbons FDU-15 with 2-D hexagonal (p6m) structure. The pore size of FDU-15 can be tailored from 4.1 to 6.8 nm by simply varying the hydrocarbon molecules. Mesoporous carbon materials FDU-14 with bicontinuous cubic (Ia3d) structure can be formed at a P123/phenol molar ratio higher than 0.04. Abstract:By employing an aqueous cooperative assembly of phenol/formaldehyde resols and triblock copolymers (Pluronic P123 and F127), highly ordered mesoporous carbons with 2-D hexagonal (p6m) and body-centered cubic (Im((3) over bar)m) structures (FDU-15, FDU-16) were synthesized with hydrocarbons such as hexadecane as a swelling agent. FDU-15 has a pore size of 3.8 nm and a BET surface area up to 1040 m(2)/g, and FDU-16 with cubic mesostructure has a pore diameter of 3.2 nm and a BET surface area of similar to 1030 m(2)/g. A variety of hydrocarbons with different chain length were used and the swelling ability was estimated in detail.

Abstract:Porous carbon materials are of interest in many applications because of their high surface area and physicochemical properties. Conventional syntheses can only produce randomly porous materials, with little control over the pore-size distributions, let alone mesostructures. Recent breakthroughs in the preparation of other porous materials have resulted in the development of methods for the preparation of mesoporous carbon materials with extremely high surface areas and ordered mesostructures, with potential applications as catalysts, separation media, and advanced electronic materials in many scientific disciplines. Current syntheses can be categorized as either hard-template or soft-template methods. Both are examined in this Review along with procedures for surface functionalization of the carbon materials obtained.

Abstract:A super-hydrophobic mesoporous carbon monolith modified by fluoroalkylsilane of CF 3(CF 2) 7CH 2Si(OCH 3) 3 (FAS-17), was reported. Super-hydrophobic mesoporous carbon monolith (CM) was prepared by modifying the carbon monolith by fluorinated compounds. CM was oxidized by a hot mixture of concentrated sulfuric and nitric acids and then mixed with methanol solution of hydrolyzed fluoroalkylsilane of FAS-17. The results show that the combination of dewetting properties and ordered mesostructure allows the controlled manipulation of surface behavior of ordered mesoporous carbon materials.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous carbon C-FDU-18s with tunable pore sizes of 12-33 nm and pore wall thicknesses of 5-11 nm were synthesized by using poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(styrene) (PEO-b-PS) diblock copolymers with various PS chain lengths as templates and through the evaporation induced self-assembly process. The obtained C-FDU-18 carbons possess face-centered cubic mesostructure with Fm (3) over barm symmetry, large cell parameters varying from 32 to 54 nm, high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area up to 1000 m(2) g(-1) and large pore volume of about 0.7 cm(3) g(-1). By oxidative treatment of HNO3 and H2O2 mixed solution, numerous hydrophilic groups were created in the mesopore channels without destroying the ordered mesostructure of the C-FDU-18. Through the in situ reduction of Ag+, Ag nanoparticles (9.7 nm) were successfully introduced into the large mesopores, resulting in functional mesoporous carbons Ag-C-FDU-18 with stably trapped Ag nanoparticles. Similarly, by reduction of Fe3+ ions in the large mesopores, superparamagnetic Fe-C-FDU-18 with incorporated magnetic nanoparticles (6.2 nm) and fast magnetic response was synthesized. These functional large-pore mesoporous carbons have high potential for application in various fields such as catalysis, chemical sensing, and magnetic separation and enrichment.

Abstract:Here, we report a structure-function study of imine covalent organic frameworks (COFs) comparing a series of novel fluorine-containing monomers to their non-fluorinated analogues. We found that the fluorine-containing monomers produced 2D-COFs with not only greatly improved surface areas (over 2000 m2 g-1 compared to 760 m2 g-1 for the non-fluorinated analogue), but also with improved crystallinity and larger, more defined pore diameters. We then studied the formation of these COFs under varying reaction times and temperatures to obtain a greater insight into their mechanism of formation.

A Family of Highly Ordered Mesoporous Polymer Resin and Carbon Structures from Organic−Organic Self-Assembly

Abstract:The syntheses of a family of highly ordered mesoporous polymers and carbon frameworks from organic-organic assembly of triblock copolymers with soluble, low-molecular-weight phenolic resin precursors (resols) by an evaporation induced self-assembly strategy have been reported in detail. The family members include two-dimensional hexagonal (space group, p6m), three-dimensional bicontinuous (Ia (3) over bard), body-centered cubic (Im (3) over barm), and lamellar mesostructures, which are controlled by simply adjusting the ratio of phenol/template or poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(propylene oxide) in the templates. A five-step mechanism from organic-organic assembly has been demonstrated. Cubic FDU-14 with a gyroidal mesostructure of polymer resin or carbon has been synthesized for the first time by using the copolymer Pluronic P123 as a template in a relatively narrow range. Upon calcination at 350 degrees C, the templates should be removed to obtain mesoporous polymers, and further heating at above a critical temperature of 600 degrees C transforms the mesoporous polymers to the homologous carbon frameworks. The mesoporous polymer resin and carbon product materials exhibit ordered structures, high surface areas, (670-1490 m(2)/g), large pore volumes (0.65-0.85 cm(3)/g), and uniform, large pore sizes (7.0-3.9 nm), as well as very thick pore walls (6-8 nm). The carbon open frameworks with covalently bonded constructions and thick pore walls exhibit high thermal stability (> 1400 degrees C). Our results show that the feed gas used during the calcination has a great influence on the porosity of the products. The presence of a small amount of oxygen facilitates the large pore sizes and high surface areas of mesoporous materials with different mesostructures. An extraction method employing sulfuric acid can also decompose the template from hexagonal mesostructured polymers with little framework shrinkage. Preliminary studies of the mechanical and electrochemical properties of mesoporous carbon molecular sieves are also presented.

Abstract:In this article, two highly ordered mesoporous silica materials with the same face-centered cubic (fcc) symmetry but distinctly different pore structures have been synthesized by simply changing the amount of silica source. Their structures have been extensively studied by Synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering, N(2) sorption analysis, scanning and transmission electron microscopy observations, and electron tomography. One mesoporous material formed by a hard sphere packing (HSP) pathway exhibits a bimodal pore distribution, while the other has a conventional FDU-12-type mesostructure with a single-sized pore. By increasing the amount of the silica source, the cavities formed by the packing of composite spherical micelles in the HSP mesostructure are gradually filled by the excess of siliceous species, leading to the conventional FDU-12-type mesostructure with the disappearance of bimodal pores. The pore connectivity of the HSP mesoporous material hydrothermally treated at 150 °C has been further investigated. Taking advantage of the ultrathin tomographic slices, the sizes of cage, cavity, and connectivity are measured to be 14.5, 10.5, and 6.4 nm, respectively. More importantly, the pore connection between the cage and cavity is directly observed to occur along the ⟨100⟩ direction, different from the FDU-12-type mesostructure in which the connection appears between two adjacent cages along the ⟨110⟩ direction. This work represents an unusual example where two ordered cage-type mesoporous materials with the same symmetry can be synthesized by slightly changing the synthesis condition, but their pore structures and pore connections are significantly different. Our finding is important for understanding the formation mechanism and for the rational design and controllable synthesis of novel mesoporous materials.

Abstract:Mesoporous carbon with high surface area and ordered structure was synthesized via a nanocasting process using mesoprous MCM-41 silica as a template and sucrose as a carbon precursor. Sample was characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and nitrogen adsorption. The results show that the templated carbon has a BTE surface area similar to 1200 m(2)/g, a pore volume similar to 1.0 cm(3)/g, and a bimodal porosity centered at around 4 mn and 46 nm.

Abstract:A series of highly ordered mesoporous carbonaceous frameworks with diverse symmetries have been successfully synthesized by using phenolic resols as a carbon precursor and mixed amphiphilic surfactants of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) and reverse PPO-PEO-PPO as templates by the strategy of evaporation-induced organic-organic self-assembly (EISA). The transformation of the ordered mesostructures from face-centered (Fd3m) to body-centered cubic (Im3m), then 2D hexagonal (P6mm), and eventually to cubic bicontinuous (Ia3d) symmetry has been achieved by simply adjusting the ratio of triblock copolymers to resol precursor and the relative content of PEO-PPO-PEO copolymer F127, as confirmed by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen-sorption measurements. The blends of block copolymers can interact with resol precursors and tend to self-assemble into cross-linking micellar structures during the solvent-evaporation process, which provides a suitable template for the construction of mesostructures. The assembly force comes from the hydrogen-bonding interactions between organic mixed micelles and the resol-precursor matrix. The BET surface area for the mesoporous carbonaceous samples calcined at 600 degrees C under nitrogen atmosphere is around 600 m2 g(-1), and the pore size can be adjusted from 2.8 to 5.4 nm. An understanding of the organic-organic self-assembly behavior in the mixed amphiphilic surfactant system would pave the way for the synthesis of mesoporous materials with controllable structures.

Abstract:A family of highly ordered mesoporous polymers and carbon frameworks, including p6m, Ia3d, Im3m Fm3m, and Fd3m mesostructures, has been prepared by the organic-organic assembly of triblock copolymers PEO-PPO-PEO, reverse copolymer PPO-PEO-PPO and PEO-PS with resols via solvent evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) strategy. By using pre-hydrolyzed TEOS as an inorganic co-precursor, highly ordered mesoporous polymer-silica and carbon-silica nanocomposites with interpenetrating networks were also synthesized via a triconstituent co-assembly. After the removal of silica component from carbon-silica nanocomposites, ordered mesoporous carbons then can be derived with large pore sizes of 6.7 nm, pore volumes of 2.0 cm(3)/g, and high surface area of 2470 m(2)/g.

Abstract:A facile dual-templating approach is demonstrated to prepare hierarchically ordered macro-/mesoporous carbons. Monodispersed silica colloidal crystals are used as a hard template, amphiphilic triblock copolymer PEO-PPO-PEO as a soft template, and soluble resols as a carbon source. The procedure involves packing and aging of silica microspheres, evaporation-induced organic-organic assembly of mesostructures in the void of microspheres, thermosetting and carbonization of phenolic formaldehyde (PF), and removal of silica scaffolds by HF. The obtained porous carbons have a highly ordered face-centered cubic macrostructure with tunable pore sizes of 230-430 nm and interconnected windows with a size of 30-65 nm. The rigid silica hard templates can prevent the shrinkage of the mesostructure during the thermosetting and carbonization process, resulting in large cell parameters (similar to 18 nm) and pore sizes (similar to 11 nm). The bimodal porous carbon materials have large BET surface areas (up to 760 m(2)/g), large pore volumes (similar to 1.25 cm(3)/g), and partially graphitized frameworks. With the increase in the silica sphere diameter, the BET surface areas and the window sizes increase. The hierarchically ordered carbon structures show strong diffraction at wavelengths of 500-690 nm depending on the treatment used.
