Abstract:Two-dimensional zeolitic materials have drawn increasing attention because of their structural diversity, high accessible surface areas, and potential as precursors to form novel three-dimensional (3D) structures. Here we report a new layered fluoroaluminophosphate, denoted as EMM-9 (ExxonMobil Material #9), synthesized in the same synthesis system as that for a previously reported 3D framework structure EMM-8 (framework-type code: SFO) using an F- medium and 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) as the organic structure-directing agent. The structure of EMM-9 was solved from rotation electron diffraction data and refined against synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data. The fluoroaluminophosphate layer of EMM-9 is composed of sti composite building units. The DMAP cations are located between the layers. pi-pi interactions between the DMAP cations and hydrogen bonding between the DMAP cations and layers were identified. The layered EMM-9 structure is closely related to the 3D framework structure of EMM-8 and can be transformed to EMM-8 by calcination.

Abstract:A series of syntheses in the HF–ZrO2–P2O5–pyridine–H2O system have been performed in an attempt to synthesize novel materials with open zirconium phosphate framework structures. One of the resulting products, designated ZrPOF–pyr (∣(C5H6N)4(H2O)2∣[Zr12P16O60(OH)4F8]), has been characterized by XRD, SEM and TG-DTA, and its crystal structure determined from powder diffraction data using direct methods (Pnnm, a=19.1595(2)Å, b=15.1428(1)Å, c=6.61804(6)Å). The framework structure, consisting of corner sharing ZrO6, ZrO5F, ZrO4F2 octahedra and PO4 and PO3OH tetrahedra, proved to be identical to that of ∣(C5H16N2)2(H2O)6∣[Zr12P16O60(OH)4F8], which had been reported previously. In both structures, the terminal P–OH group is disordered. The non-framework species (pyridinium ion and water molecule) could be located in the channels of the framework. Structure solution was also performed using a charge-flipping algorithm, which makes no symmetry assumptions, to verify that the P–OH disorder is inherent to the material and not a result of an incorrectly assumed space group. The phase is thermally stable to 450°C, but transforms to another phase at higher temperatures.

Abstract:PKU-23, a new layered silicogermanate with eight-ring pores in the crystalline sheets, was hydrothermally synthesized under fluoride conditions by using 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) or 1-benzyl-4-dimethylaminopyridinium hydroxide (DMAP-Bn) as organic structure directing agents (OSDAs). The structure determination from single crystal X-ray diffraction showed the PKU-23 was a layered material with the double four-ring (d4r) units connected by the interrupted zigzag chains. The layers in PKU-23 were found to stack by simple translation. The OSDA cations were occluded between the adjacent layers. The topotactic condensation of layered PKU-23 resulted in a three-dimensional (3D) zeolite PKU-23-Z, which possessed a 10 X 8 X 8 channel system. The framework topology of PKU-23-Z is the same as zeolite ECNU-16. PKU-23 is the first reported zeolite precursor that could form a 3D channel system after topotactic condensation.

Abstract:A zeolite phillipsite (PHI) analogue with low silica contents has been synthesized from a NH4F–Al2O3–SiO2–piperazine–H2O system. The obtained zeolite PHI analogue grows as agglomerates of intergrown submicron-sized crystals. The synthesis process in fluoride-based media has been investigated. It has been unequivocally demonstrated that no zeolite phase occurred in the absence of piperazine or NH4F. The results of CHN elemental analyses as well as of TG analyses confirmed that both piperazine and NH4+ had been incorporated into the zeolitic structure. Thus, the zeolite PHI analogue is seemingly derived from the cooperative structure-directing effect of the organic molecule piperazine and the inorganic cation NH4+. The use of a suitable combination of inorganic cation and organic molecule in fluoride-based media may provide an effective means of exploring new frameworks with low Si/Al ratios.

Abstract:By a vapor phase transport synthesis method, the aluminophosphate solid gel has been transformed into a 3-dimensional aluminophosphate framework under pyridine atmosphere. It's structure was solved by X-ray single crystal diffraction, which shows that the compound [Al3P3O12F][C5H5NH]center dot 0.2H(2)O crystallizes in a triclinic system, space group P-1(2) with cell parameters a=9.127(2) angstrom, b=9.185(3)degrees, c= 9.346(2) angstrom, alpha=85.563(14)degrees, beta=77.346(6)degrees, gamma=89.628(17)degrees, V=762.2(4) angstrom(3), Z=2, D-c=2.074 Mg/m(3), M-r=468.09, F(000)=474 and mu=0.64 mm(-1). Its structure is identical to that of the previously reported compound UT-6, the fluorine ions as a component of starting gel are introduced into the framework and bridge the Al atoms, and the independent 8-ring channels in the framework are interconnected to constitute cage structures analogous to AlPO4-CHA zeolite-like. The results from XRD and TG-DTA analyses indicate that the sample has higher thermal stability, and its framework structure is intact after calcination at 400 degrees C.

Abstract:In situ two-dimensional NMR and fluorescence emission spectroscopy were employed to investigate the cooperative structure-direction effect of organic amine such as morpholine in the synthesis of aluminophosphate molecular sieves in ionic liquids. In situ rotating frame nuclear Overhauser effect spectra (ROESY) together with fluorescence measurements demonstrate that the aggregates between imidazolium cations and morpholines through intermolecular hydrogen bonds can be formed in the gel during the crystallization of molecular sieves. Combining with the characterizations of the solid products by solid-state NMR, it is verified that different aggregates of organic amines with imidazolium cations, which is similar to self-assembled supramolecular analogues, could act as the structure-directing agents for selective tuning of the framework topologies such as AEL, AFI and LTA in the final solid products.

Abstract:Preparation of aluminosilicate ferrierite (FER) zeolite nanosheets with controllable thickness in the presence of a sole organic ammonium is attractive, but still challenging. In this report, with the employment of N,N-diethyl-cis-2,6-dimethylpiperidinium (DMP) as both a structure directing agent and crystal growth inhibitor, aluminosilicate FER zeolite nanosheets, with a variety of crystal thicknesses, ranging from 6 to 200 nm, are successfully synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Very interestingly, the amount of DMP in the starting gel is the key factor for crystal thickness control of aluminosilicate FER zeolite nanosheets. The obtained FER products, with different thicknesses, are well characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N-2 sorption, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), and magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) techniques. This simple strategy might provide a novel avenue for the synthesis of other zeolite nanosheets with controllable thickness.

Abstract:Aluminosilicate zeolites are a well-known class of crystalline materials that have wide applications in various industrial fields due to their selective adsorption, acidic sites, and stable hydrothermal stability. Great efforts have been devoted to discovering new zeolite structures. As one of the effective methods, layered silicates have been used as precursors to produce stable zeolites through topotactic transformation. Herein, a new layered aluminosilicate, named NUD-11, was hydrothermally synthesized using N,N-dimethylbenzimidazolium as the structure directing agent (SDA). It was then converted into a stable crystalline zeolite by linking the interlayer Si-OH groups with a silylation agent, diethoxymethylsilane. Studies showed that the resulting NUD-11S consisted of alkylsilicate -O-Si(CH3)(2)-O- linkages between the adjacent layers to form interconnecting 10- and 12-membered ring channels. The calcined NUD-11S possessed micropores of 0.74 nm and 1.2 nm in diameter with a large specific surface area of 314 m(2) g(-1). The abundant microporosity would make NUD-11S useful as adsorbents or catalysts.

Abstract:The thermal stability and structural transformation mechanism are critical for the industrial applications of zeolites and the design of new framework types. Herein, a new zeolite PKU-26 has been hydrothermally synthesized under fluoride conditions using a tetraethylammonium (TEA+ ) cation as the structure-directing agent (SDA) and its framework contains partial Q3 T atoms [Q3 for T(-O-T)3 OH]. Upon calcination, PKU-26 processed a single-crystal to single-crystal transformation to another novel zeolite PKU-27 with the elimination of terminal -OH groups and enhanced thermal stability up to 650 °C, exhibiting the first Q3 →Q4 transformation [Q4 for T(-O-T)4 ] in 3D zeolite frameworks. The mechanism of the structural transformation, involving proton transfer, framework dehydration, and TO4 reconstruction, is proposed and supported by theoretical calculations.

Abstract:SCM-14 (Sinopec Composite Material No. 14), a new stable germanosilicate zeolite with a 12×8×8-ring channel system, was synthesized using commercially available 4-pyrrolidinopyridine as organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs) in fluoride medium. The framework structure of SCM-14 was determined using rotation electron diffraction (RED), and refined against synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXPD) data for both as-made and calcined materials. The framework structure of SCM-14 is closely related to that of three known zeolites: mordenite (MOR), GUS-1 (GON), and IM-16 (UOS). SCM-14 has the same projection as that of mordenite and GUS-1 when viewed along the 12-ring channels, and possesses two more straight 8-ring channels running perpendicular to the 12-ring channels. The structure of SCM-14 can be constructed by either the same layers as that of GUS-1 or the same columns as that of IM-16. Based on their structural relationship, three topologically reasonable hypothetical zeolites were predicted.

Abstract:A new layered silicogermanate, PKU-22, was hydrothermally synthesized under fluoride conditions using the tetraethylammonium (TEA(+)) cation as the structure directing agent (SDA). The crystal structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Structure analysis reveals that PKU-22 is constructed by sti layers stacking along the [100] direction in an center dot center dot center dot AAAA center dot center dot center dot manner, with TEA(+) cations occurring in the interlayer spaces and F- anions residing within the layer and connecting to Ge atoms, which also act as the charge compensation species. In situ temperature-variable powder X-ray diffraction results indicated that PKU-22 could be into a three-dimensional STI-type zeolite PKU-22a on heating. It is interesting that the TEA+ cations remain transferred structure of the condensed product. Solid-state NMR, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, intact in the thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry, and carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen elemental analyses were applied to aid the structure analysis of PKU-22 and illustrate its transformation. The scheme of the topotactic condensation of PKU-22 to PKU-22a is proposed.

Abstract:Post-synthetic dealumination treatment is a common tactic adopted to improve the catalytic performance of industrialized zeolitic catalysts through enhancements in acidity and stability. However, among the possible extra-framework aluminum (EFAL) species in dealuminated zeolites such as Al3+, Al(OH)(2+), Al(OH)(2)(+), AlO+, AlOOH, and Al(OH)(3), the presence of tri-coordinated EFAL-Al3+ species, which exhibit large quadrupolar effect due to the lack of hydrogen-bonding species, was normally undetectable by conventional one- and two-dimensional H-1 and/or Al-27 solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) techniques. By combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with experimental P-31 SSNMR using trimethylphosphine (TMP) as the probe molecule, we report herein a comprehensive study to certify the origin, fine structure, and possible location of tri-coordinated EFAL-Al3+ species in dealuminated HY zeolite. The spatial proximities and synergies between the Bronsted and various Lewis acid sites were clearly identified, and the origin for the observed EFAL-Al3+ species with ultra-strong Lewis acidity was deduced to be at the expense of adjacent Bronsted acid sites. The excellent performance of such tri-coordinated EFAL species was furthermore confirmed by glucose isomerization reactions.

Abstract:Zeolites have been extensively studied over many years due to their widely applications in catalysis, ion exchange, adsorption, and separation.[1] Knowing the structure of zeolite is important for understanding their properties and predicting possible applications of such materials. Structure determination of zeolites has remains challenging, as submicroand nano-sized crystals are often obtained. Here, we elucidate a novel germanate-based zeolite PKU-14 with a 3D 12*12*12-ring channel system. The structure was solved by combing high-resolution PXRD, rotation electron diffraction method, NMR and IR spectroscopy. Ordered Ge4O4 vacancies inside the [46612] cages has been found in PKU-14, where a unique water dimer was located at the vacancies and played a structure-directing role.
Atomic-scale insights into topotactic transformations in extra-large pore silicate zeolites using time-resolved 3D electron diffraction

Abstract:Understanding the atomic scale structural dynamics of phase transformations is crucial for developing new materials and tailoring the properties of the materials. However, many materials are obtained as polycrystalline powders with large unit cells and/or complex structures, making it challenging to investigate detailed structural changes using conventional X-ray diffraction techniques. Here, we employ time-resolved 3D electron diffraction (3D ED) to unravel the topotactic reactions and transformations of extra-large pore silicate zeolites ECNU-45 to ECNU-46. Notably, ECNU-45 features 3D interconnecting 24×10×10-ring channels, while ECNU-46 exhibits 1D 24-ring channels connected to 10-ring pockets. ECNU-45 and ECNU-46 are the first reported examples of pure silicate zeolites with pores larger than 22-rings. Our findings showcase detailed changes at six distinct tetrahedral Si sites, involving atom displacement, addition, and removal of framework atoms through bond breakage and formation. This work not only presents the discovery of novel zeolites but also provides unprecedented atomic-level insights into the dynamic processes of topotactic reactions. Our results have significant implications for advancing materials engineering and understanding complex solid-state reactions at an atomic scale.

Abstract:The aluminosilicate zeolite ZSM-43 (where ZSM = Zeolite Socony Mobil) was first synthesized more than 3 decades ago, but its chemical structure remained unsolved because of its poor crystallinity and small crystal size. Here we present optimization of the ZSM-43 synthesis using a high-throughput approach and subsequent structure determination by the combination of electron crystallographic methods and powder X-ray diffraction. The synthesis required the use of a combination of both inorganic (Cs+ and K+) and organic (choline) structure-directing agents. High-throughput synthesis enabled a screening of the synthesis conditions, which made it possible to optimize the synthesis, despite its complexity, in order to obtain a material with significantly improved crystallinity. When both rotation electron diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging techniques are applied, the structure of ZSM-43 could be determined. The structure of ZSM-43 is a new zeolite framework type and possesses a unique two-dimensional channel system limited by 8-ring channels ZSM-43 is stable upon calcination, and sorption measurements show that the material is suitable for adsorption of carbon dioxide as well as methane.

Abstract:An intermediate aluminophosphate phase [ A ~ ~ P ~ ~ E ( O H ) ~ J . ~ [ H O C H ~ C H ~ N H ~ ] , denoted as APO-M, is isolated in a pure form during the crystallization of a three-dimensional open-framework APO-CJ3, and characterized by XRD, TG-DTA, MAS NMR, ICP and CHN analyses. Our studies show that APO-M can transform to APO-CJ3, as well as to AIP04-21 under hydrothermal treatment. The phase transformation process has been further studied. It is believed that the phase transformation from APO-M to AIP04-21 is via a solid-to-solid conversion process, which has been confirmed by the dry-crystal conversion experiment.

Abstract:Zeolite AS-1, an aluminosilicate analogue with a DFT framework, has been synthesized hydrothermally from a system of HF-Al(OH)(3)-SiO2-ethylenediamine-H2O and characterized by TC-DTA, NMR, and XRD techniques. The coexistence of fluoride anions and diprotonated ethylenediamine cations in the reaction system plays an important role in the formation of the AS-1 framework with Si/Al = 1. The Al-27 NMR spectrum shows only one signal due to tetracoordinated aluminum at a chemical shift of ca. 57 ppm. In the Si-29 NMR spectrum, there is only one main peak at ca. -89 ppm, which is assigned to the resonance of Si(4Al). The structure of AS-1 has been determined on the basis of powder X-ray diffraction data, using Rietveld analysis. AS-1 crystallizes in the space group P4(2)/n with lattice parameters of a = 10.3022(1) angstrom and c = 8.8785(1) angstrom at 21 degrees C. Both the NMR spectra and the structure analysis data indicate that the distribution of Si and Al in the framework of AS-1 follows a strictly alternating pattern, in accordance with the Lowenstein avoidance rule. The framework of AS-1 can be represented by a cross-linking of bifurcated hexagonal-square (bhs) chains or by the connection of superimposed 4.8(2) nets. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
