Abstract:Europium trivalent ion (Eu3+)-doped silica nanowires were prepared, and the positioning of Eu3+ in the silicon dioxide nanowire matrix was researched. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscope analysis (EDX) were used to characterize the product's morphology and structure. The representation of Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were indicative of the presence of a covalent Eu-O-Si bond. The results suggest that Eu3+ was successfully doped into amorphous silica. Furthermore, a sol-gel inorganic−organic co-assembly mechanism model was proposed to illuminate the formation of the rare-earth ion-doped nanowires. In addition, photoluminescent emission of europium ions in a silica matrix was further discussed. It was demonstrated that a 10% content of Eu3+ resulted in a quenching effect and after annealing at 650 °C, the europium ions in the nanowires had a high luminescence intensity due to the silica network structure.

Abstract:Novel luminescent one-dimensional Ln(3+) (Eu, Tb) doped SiO2 hollow nanofibers were successfully fabricated using a facile and economical co-axial electrospinning technique with subsequent calcination. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the as-obtained samples present obvious hollow morphology with an average diameter of 303 +/- 11 nm and thin walls approximate 76 nm. For SiO2: xEu(3+) hollow nanofibers, the highest luminescence intensity, the longest lifetime and the largest quantum efficiency were both in the composition of 6 mol% Eu3+. The large value of R21 indicated a highly disordered environment around Eu3+ ions in the host, which was better for intense visible red emission. Meanwhile, the spectral characteristics and radiative properties were also analyzed according to the Judd-Ofelt theory from the emission spectra. What's more, under ultraviolet excitation, the emission colors of samples could be tuned from red to green, including bisque by doping Eu3+, Tb3+ and co-doping Eu3+/Tb3+ ions, which indicated the obtained SiO2: Ln(3+) hollow nanofibers are potential phosphors in nanostructured optical devices applications. Understanding the Remarkable Luminescence Enhancement Via SiO2 Coating on TiO2:Eu3+ Nanofibers

Abstract:TiO2:Eu3+ nanofibers diameters can be tuned by changing the mixed solvent ratio are synthesized via the electrospinning technique. Concentration quenching phenomena and the relationship of the PL intensity ratio I(5D0-7F2)/I(5D0-7F1) with the Eu doping concentration are discussed. Notably, the luminescence intensity is enhanced by about 7.8 fold by coating SiO2 gel layer on the TiO2:Eu3+ nanofibers, which is successfully performed via a sol-gel process followed by calcination. Furthermore, these fibers are characterized systematically via X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Additionally, their Judd-Ofelt and spectral parameters are calculated to investigate their local structures. The relatively low Ω2 value of the coated samples reveals a decrease in covalency in the Eu-O bonds and an increase in the symmetric nature of Eu3+, which indicate that the perturbation effect of the crystal field in the solid system is larger than that of the uncoated samples. FT-IR analysis indicates the formation of Ti-O-Si bonds, which provide the ligand field in the interface between the TiO2:Eu3+ nanofibers and SiO2 layer and can repair the surface unsaturated bonds. This reduces the selection rules for radiative transitions, thereby the state of the Eu3+ ions is converted from dormant to activated. Moreover, the silica coating stabilizes the surface of the TiO2:Eu3+ nanofibers and eliminates the surface defects. Finally, a detailed mechanism is proposed to explain the luminescence enhancement behavior.

Abstract:Uniformly sized and shaped Eu3+-doped silica nanowires were conventionally fabricated by the microemulsion method accompanied with a sol-gel process for the first time. The products were characterized by different techniques, and their luminescence properties were investigated and compared. The scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images demonstrated that the as-synthesized Eu3+-doped silica nanowires were formed in high yield with a smooth surface and a uniform diameter of about 130-150 nm. The results of FTIR spectroscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction showed that the Eu3+ ions were doped into the silica network structure in the form of Si-O-Eu bonds. The effect of the Eu3+ concentration on the luminescent intensity was investigated, and the highest emission intensity was found at the composition of 20 mol-% Eu3+. The obtained Eu3+-doped silica nanowires exhibited characteristic luminescent emission of Eu3+ at lambda = 613 nm and apparent concentration quenching above the concentration of 20 mol-% Eu3+. The growth processes of the silica nanowires were explained in detail on the basis of a modified vapor-liquid-solid mechanism.

Abstract:SiO2 and Eu3+-doped SiO2 submicron rods were conveniently fabricated via a sol–gel process at room temperature. In this process, citric acid served as a unique structural modifier through hydrolysis of TEOS at alkaline condition to obtain the silica submicron rods. The morphology of the products was sensitive to the conditions, such as stirring, gelation time and the dropping speed of NH4OH. By sampling the products at different reaction times, we discussed the formation and growing mechanism of SiO2:Eu3+ submicron rods in detail. The weak interactions between ammonium citrate crystals and silica species may be the reasons of the rods formation. The obtained silica submicron rods were 5–6μm in length and 650–750nm in width and there was no obvious change after doping. Under UV light excitation, the undoped silica submicron rods exhibited blue emission, which may be associated with defect centers in the structures of the products. The Eu3+-doped silica submicron rods exhibited red emission, which was due to the 4f→4f transition of Eu3+. The effect of different doping concentrations of Eu3+ ions on the luminescence was investigated. Abstract:Uniform Eu3+-doped SiO2 nanorods were synthesized through a simple sol–gel method using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactant template and tetraethylorthosilicate as silicon source. X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrum, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy, and photoluminescence spectra were employed to characterize the products in detail. The nanorods have good uniformity and their diameters and lengths are in the range of 200–300 and 500–700 nm through the SEM images, respectively. The formation of the nanorods was studied by taking SEM images after different aging time. The experimental results indicate that CTAB plays a crucial role in the formation of the silica nanorods. The luminescence of Eu3+-doped SiO2 nanorods is dominated by red-emission around 612 nm due to intra-atomic 4f → 4f (5D0 → 7F2) transition of Eu3+ ions. Furthermore, the effect of doping concentrations of Eu3+ ions on the luminescence was investigated.

Preparation of Y2O3:Eu3+ Nanofibers Via Electrospinning and Study on Their Photoluminescence Properties

Abstract:Y2O3:Eu3+ nanofibers were successfully prepared by a combination method of electrospinning and calcination. The results of XRD, FESEM, FTIR, and HRTEM exhibited that the obtained nanofibers with diameter around 100 rim were composed of cubic Y2O3 phase. The photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy was employed to study their luminescent properties in details. The results show that the optimum doping concentration of Eu3+ was 4 at% and the emission intensity of Y2O3:Eu3+ nanofibers was improved with the calcination temperature increasing. The Y2O3:Eu3+ nanofibers show higher PL emission intensity than that of their nanoparticle counterparts under identical measurement conditions.

Abstract:Al-doped and B, Al co-doped SiO2 xerogels with Eu2+ ions were prepared only by sol–gel reaction in air without reducing heat-treatment or post-doping. The luminescence characteristics and mechanism of europium doping SiO2 xerogels were studied as a function of the concentration of Al, B, the europium concentration and the host composition. The emission spectra of the Al-doped and B, Al co-doped samples all show an efficient emission broad band in the blue violet range. The blue emission of the Al-doped sample was centered at 437nm, whereas the B, Al co-doped xerogel emission maximum shifted to 423nm and the intensity became weaker. Concentration quenching effect occurred in both the Al-doped and B, Al co-doped samples, which probably is the result of the transfer of the excitation energy from Eu2+ ions to defects. The highest Eu2+ emission intensity was observed for samples with the Si(OC2H5)4:C2H5OH:H2O molar ratio of 1:2:4.

Abstract:Monodisperse coreshell structured SiO2@SiO2:Eu3+ microspheres were synthesized in a seeded growth way. In that way, a thin shell of Eu3+-doped silica was grown on the prepared monodisperse silica colloids. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR), thermal analysis (TGA-DSC) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The results reveal that the SiO2 spheres have been successfully coated by SiO2:Eu3+ phosphors and the obtained SiO2@SiO2:Eu3+ particles have perfect spherical shape with narrow size distribution. Additionally, the monodisperse SiO2@SiO2:Eu3+ microspheres exhibit considerably strong photoluminescence (PL) of Eu3+ under the excitation of 393 nm compared with the SiO2:Eu3+ samples with polydispersed or irregular shapes and sizes obtained by base-catalyzed Stliber method. Furthermore, the PL intensity increases with the increasing of Eu3+ concentration in SiO2 microspheres shell, and concentration quenching occurs when Eu3+ concentration exceeds 5.0 mol%. Abstract:Zn2SiO4:Eu3+ phosphors with diverse morphologies, including rice-like, hexahedron-like, and column-like, have been successfully prepared by means of a simple hydrothermal approach followed by a subsequent calcinations process. The results indicate that the morphologies of the products can be adjusted by altering the pH value of the reaction system. The formation mechanisms of different morphologies of samples have been investigated in detail. Furthermore, under near ultraviolet excitation, the Zn2SiO4:Eu3+ exhibits strong red emission corresponding to the 5D0→7F2 transitions of the Eu3+ ions, which have potential applications in optical and biological areas. Meanwhile, luminescent characteristics of different morphologies have been explored and the column-like Zn2SiO4:Eu3+ sample presents an optimum red luminescence. The CIE chromaticity diagram and the symmetry of the different morphologies phosphors also have been explored. In addition, the concentration quenching effects and decay kinetics behaviors of Zn2SiO4:Eu3+ microstructures with optimum red luminescence were investigated and the strongest luminescent intensity and the longest lifetime were both in the composition of 0.03mol Eu3+.

Abstract:Eu 2+ single-doped SiO 2 (SiO 2 /Eu 2+ ) and Eu 2+ , Ag nanowires co-doped SiO 2 (SiO 2 /Eu 2+ –Ag) luminescent nanomaterials were prepared by an efficient one-step sol–gel method. Their microstructure and optical properties were characterized, and the fluorescence enhancement of Eu 2+ by Ag nanowires was investigated. The experimental results indicate that the average diameter of Ag nanowires doped is 12.5 nm, and the length–diameter ratio is 30. The Ag nanowires cannot only enhance the light absorption of SiO 2 /Eu 2+ in the range of 230–350 nm, but also reduce the fluorescence lifetime of Eu 2+ . More importantly, the emission intensity is enhanced after doping Ag nanowires, and the red shift phenomenon of the emission spectrum is observed, red shift occurs between 10 and 56 nm. The highest fluorescence intensity is accessed under the Ag doping concentration of 0.10 %. Additionally, the emission of SiO 2 /Eu 2+ with 0.10 % of Ag doping at 456 nm is 16 times stronger than that of pure SiO 2 /Eu 2+ . The present results indicate that the fluorescence enhancement is attributed to the local field enhancement and the increased radiative decay rates induced by Ag nanowires.

Abstract:A series of novel color tunable dandelion-like SiO2:Ln(3+) (Ln = Eu, Tb) nanophosphors of approximately 70 nm diameter were prepared using a simple hydrothermal route. The phase, time-dependent shape evolution, morphology, sizes, and luminescence properties of the as-prepared products were well characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and photoluminescence spectra as well as kinetic decay curves. Under ultraviolet excitation, the Eu3+ and Tb3+ singly doped SiO2 samples showed strong red and green emission, respectively. Furthermore, the luminescence colors of the as-prepared Tb3+, Eu3+ co-doped dandelion-like SiO2 nanophosphors could be altered from green to red, including green-yellow, yellow, orange yellow and reddish orange, by simply adjusting the doping concentrations of Eu3+.

Abstract:Eu3+ and Gd3+ ions co-doped amorphous silica nanorods were prepared using a simple sol–gel method, and their luminescent properties were studied under the excitation of ultraviolet light. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Photoluminescence (PL) spectra were employed to characterize the products in detail. The nanorods are uniform and their diameters and lengths are in the range of 200–300nm and 500–700nm, respectively. Energy transfer process in Gd3+ and Eu3+ co-doped silica, where a ground state of Gd3+, 8S7/2, was selectively excited to a 6IJ state under the excitation of 274nm, was studied in terms of luminescence spectra, which indict that the energy transfer of Gd3+–Eu3+ is efficient. The mechanism of energy transfer from Gd3+ to Eu3+ is a resonant transfer, in which electric dipole–dipole interaction plays a leading role. Abstract:Photoluminescent nanomaterials had emerged as an amazing field in a wide range of applications during the past few decades. In this article, fibrous europium tartrates and photoluminescent silica nanotubes were conveniently synthesized by using sol–gel method, in which europium ions entered silica matrix. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, fourier transform infrared spectra, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) spectra analysis were used to characterize the growth, structure, morphology and optical property of the products. The results indicated that europium tartrates nanofibers as a template can transform tetraethylorthosilicate into silica nanotubes effectively. Meanwhile, europium(III) was transferred from the fibers to the tubes successfully. A hard template mechanism was proposed to explain the formation process of europium(III)-doped silica nanotubes. Moreover, different morphologies of silica-based nanomaterials were obtained due to varying NH 4 OH addition or stirring time. PL spectra from nanofiber and nanotube show a typical emission of europium(III), and 13 % is the quenching concentration of europium(III) in silica matrix for this system. The novel silica nanotubes can be applied potentially in optical and biological areas.

Abstract:Highly monodispersed SiO2@Lu2O3:Eu3+ core–shell microspheres were successfully synthesized by coating the Lu2O3:Eu3+ nanoparticles onto the surface of non-aggregated spherical SiO2 particles via a simple solvothermal method, followed by a subsequent calcination process. The as-prepared phosphors were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR), thermal analysis (TGA-DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and photoluminescence spectra (PL). The as-obtained core–shell microspheres show strong red emission corresponding to the 5D0→7F2 transition of the Eu3+ ions under ultraviolet (UV) excitation, which may have potential applications in light-emitting phosphors, field emission displays, advanced flat panel displays and biological labeling.
