Abstract:Cu-W alloy is currently one of the most widely used electrical contact materials for high-voltage circuit breakers, and its arc-ablation resistance directly affects the service life and grid safety of high-voltage high-capacity circuit breakers. In this paper, the arc erosion resistance of Cu-W alloys (CuW50, CuW60, CuW70, CuW80, and CuW90) with different W contents under an atmospheric environment is comparatively studied, focusing on the erosion morphology and evolution of the surface after ablation, and the arc ablation mechanism is discussed in detail. The results show that the mass of the Cu-W alloy sample increases after discharge ablation. With the increase of W content, the ablation area of Cu-W alloy gradually becomes smaller and the ablation pits become shallow. CuW90 alloy showed the best ablation morphology with the smallest ablation pit depth, which is about 45.8% lower than that of CuW50 alloy. In the arc ablation process, the high content of W phase forms a continuous skeleton, and the arc diffuses along the network structure formed by the Cu phase, which avoids the concentration of ablation and reduces the depth of ablation pits. The W oxide layer formed on the surface after ablation can inhibit arc downward breakdown, decrease the thickness of the breakdown layer, and further hinder arc erosion.
