Abstract:We discuss the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism for brane gravity described by the Regge-Teitelboim model, in higher co-dimension. Being originally a second-order in derivatives singular theory, we analyzed its constraint structure by identifying the complete set of Hamilton-Jacobi equations, under the Carathéodory's equivalent Lagrangians method, which goes hand by hand with the study of the integrability for this type of gravity. Besides, we calculate the characteristic equations including the one that satisfy the Hamilton principal function $S$. We find the presence of involutive and non-involutive constraints so that by properly defining a generalized bracket, the non-involutive constraints that originally arise in our framework, are removed while the set of parameters related to the time evolution and the gauge transformations, are identified. A detailed comparison with a recent Ostrogradsky-Hamilton approach for constrained systems, developed for this brane gravity, is also made. Some remarks on the gauge symmetries behind this theory are commented upon.

Regge-Teitelboim cosmology driven by a curved background

Abstract:We derive the dynamic equations governing a Regge Teitelboim (RT) brane that represents our universe considering that its degrees of freedom are the embedding functions, evolving in a five dimensional curved spacetime. Within this framework, we investigate the effects of embedding a Friedmann Robertson Walker (FRW) metric into a specific curved ambient spacetime. This approach allows us to analyze in detail how the ambient spacetime's curvature influences the brane universe's dynamics. Specifically, we examine the relationship between the Hubble parameter $H$ and the redshift $z$, demonstrating that our results significantly agree with actual observational data. This is contrasted and compared with other approaches.

Abstract:Numerous claims in the literature suggest that gravity induced on a higher codimensional surface violates unitarity in the weak coupling regime. However, it remained unclear, why a conserved source localized on this surface and giving rise to an induced gravity term at low energies would absorb and emit the associated ghost, given a consistent source-free theory. In this article it is shown that the appearance of the induced Einstein-Hilbert term does not threaten the unitarity of the theory. It is shown that the would-be ghost highlighted in previous works is nondynamical and therefore not associated with a state in the Hilbert space. The physics arguments behind this statement are presented in a semicovariant language, but the detailed proof is given using Dirac’s constraint analysis. The Hamiltonian on the constraint surface of the linearized theory is derived and turns out to be manifestly positive definite. As a result of these investigations, brane-induced gravity goes without a ghost, opening an exciting window of opportunity for consistent deformations of gravity at the largest observable distances.

Abstract:Linear stability of brane induced gravity in two codimensions on a static pure tension background is investigated. The brane is regularized as a ring of finite circumference in extra space. By explicitly calculating the vacuum persistence amplitude of the corresponding quantum theory, we show that the parameter space is divided into two regions—one corresponding to a stable Minkowski vacuum on the brane and one being plagued by ghost instabilities. This analytical result affirms a recent nonlinear, but mainly numerical analysis. The main result is that the ghost is absent for a sufficiently large brane tension, in perfect agreement with a value expected from a natural effective field theory point of view. Unfortunately, the linearly stable parameter regime is either ruled out phenomenologically or becomes unstable for nontrivial cosmologies. We argue that supercritical brane backgrounds constitute the remaining window of opportunity. In the special case of a tensionless brane, we find that the ghost exists for all phenomenologically relevant values of the induced gravity scale. Regarding this case, there are contradicting results in the literature, and we are able to fully resolve this controversy by explicitly uncovering the errors made in the “no-ghost” analysis. Finally, a Hamiltonian analysis generalizes the ghost result to more than two codimensions.

Abstract:Brane-induced gravity in five dimensions (Dvali--Gabadadze--Porrati model) exhibits modification of gravity at ultra-large distances, $r\gg r_c = M_{Pl}^2/M^3$ where $M$ is the five-dimensional gravity scale. This makes the model potentially interesting for explaining the observed acceleration of the Universe. We argue, however, that it has an intrinsic intermediate energy scale $(M^9/M_{Pl}^4)^{1/5}$. At higher energies, the model is strongly coupled. For $r_c$ of order of the present Hubble size, the strong coupling regime occurs at distanced below tens of metres.

Abstract:The focus of this paper is to investigate the behavior of a codimension-one thick brane in the modified symmetric teleparallel gravity structure , where Q is the nonmetricity scalar and is the trace of the energy–momentum tensor. Additionally, we examine whether braneworld scenarios are stable under small tensor perturbations and identify the associated massive and resonant modes. Our results indicate that the parameters controlling the modifications to the gravitational model-specifically those affecting nonmetricity and the energy–momentum tensor-significantly influence both the location and existence of these modes.

Dark energy as a geometrical effect in geodetic brane gravity

Abstract:Within the framework of the modified geodetic brane gravity, conformed by the Regge-Teitelboim model and enhanced with a linear term in the extrinsic curvature of the brane, the possibility that under an FRW geometry this theory emulates the so-called dark energy is discussed. The cosmological behavior of this model displays a self-(non-self)-accelerated expansion of this universe which is caused by a combination of usual matter and gravitational geometric effects controlled by a $\beta$ parameter that accompanies the correction $K$ term. Indeed, the self-accelerated branch, provided by the trace $K$ model raises the question of whether the extrinsic curvature correction terms might be suitable for dark energy candidates. We discuss the analytical expression obtained for $\rd$ in addition to the main cosmological parameters such as the state parameter $\omega_{\text{\tiny eff}}$ and the deceleration parameter $q$. Moreover, when we call for the contribution of dark radiation-like energy to be switched off, $\Odr \to 0$, we find the same acceleration behavior, as well as the same dark energy content provided by the DGP theory. The relationship of our findings to the analysis for $\rd$ performed by Davidson and Gurwich within the unified brane cosmology is briefly discussed.

Abstract:A generalization of Bekenstein's Tensor-Vector-Scalar (TeVeS) model of modified gravity has recently been proposed as an alternative to dark matter. This model -- which we will refer to as g-TeVeS -- utilizes a Galileon-induced Vainshtein mechanism to suppress modifications to General Relativity in strong gravity regimes and so avoids the need to introduce the baroque kinetic terms that typically exist in relativistic models of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). We explore the behavior of this model in spacetimes with exact Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) symmetry. The ability of the theory to recover MOND phenomenology places restrictions on the theory's parameter space and it is found that within an estimate of this area of parameter space the theory cannot successfully approximate the Friedmannian cosmological behavior of cold dark matter. It is found that much closer agreement may be recovered in other regions of the theory's parameter space and the reasons for this are discussed.

Abstract:We first give a simple example of how, in existing brane cosmological models, the connection of a “bulk” region to its mirror image creates matter on the “brane.” Next, we present a cosmological model with no Z2 symmetry which is a spherical symmetric “shell” separating two metrically different five-dimensional anti–de Sitter regions. We find that our model becomes Friedmannian at late times, like the present brane models, but that its early time behavior is very different: the scale factor grows from a nonzero value at the big bang singularity. We then show how the Israel matching conditions across the membrane (which is either a brane or a shell) have to be modified if more general equations than Einstein’s, including a Gauss-Bonnet correction, hold in the bulk, as is likely to be the case in the low energy limit of string theory. We find that the membrane can then no longer be treated in the thin wall approximation. However, its microphysics may, in some instances, simply be hidden in a renormalization of Einstein’s constant, in which case Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet membranes are identical.

The Cosmological Impact of Brane-Chern-Simons Massive Gravity

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel extension of massive gravity theory; the Brane-Chern-Simons massive gravity theory. We explore the cosmological implications of this theory by deriving the background equations and demonstrating the existence of self-accelerating solutions. Interestingly, our theory suggests the existence of self-accelerating mechanisms that originate from an effective cosmological constant, leading to intriguing possibilities for understanding the nature of cosmic acceleration. Furthermore, we perform a tensor perturbation analysis to investigate the propagation of gravitational waves in this framework. We derive the dispersion relation for gravitational waves and study their behavior in the Friedmann-Lemaître-Roberson-Waker cosmology within the context of Brane-Chen-Simons massive gravity. Utilizing the latest Union2 type Ia supernova dataset comprising $557$ SNIa events, we provide observational support for our theoretical framework, indicating that the Brane-Chern-Simons massive gravity theory is consistent with cosmological observations.

Abstract:Einstenian cubic gravity (ECG) is a modified theory of gravity constructed with cubic contractions of the curvature tensor. This theory has the remarkable feature of having the same two propagating degrees of freedom of Einstein gravity (EG), at the perturbative level on maximally symmetric spacetimes. The additional unstable modes steaming from the higher order derivative dynamics are suppressed provided that we consider the ECG as an effective field theory wherein the cubic terms are seen as perturbative corrections of the Einstein-Hilbert term. Extensions of ECG have been proposed in cosmology and compact objects in order to probe if this property holds in more general configurations. In this work, we construct a modified ECG gravity in a five dimensional warped braneworld scenario. By assuming a specific combination of the cubic parameters, we obtained modified gravity equations of motion with terms up to second-order. For a thin 3-brane, the cubic-gravity corrections yield an effective positive bulk cosmological constant. Thus, in order to keep the 5D bulk warped compact, an upper bound of the cubic parameter with respect to the bulk curvature was imposed. For a thick brane, the cubic-gravity terms modify the scalar field potential and its corresponding vacuum. Nonetheless, the domain-wall structure with a localized source is preserved. At the perturbative level, the Kaluza-Klein (KK) tensor gravitational modes are stable and possess a localized massless mode provided the cubic corrections are small compared to the EG braneworld.

Instability of the cosmological DBI-Galileon in the non-relativistic limit

Abstract:The DBI-Galileon model is a scalar-tensor theory of gravity which is defined as the most general theory of the dynamics of a 4D brane embedded in a 5D bulk. It is of particular interest as it introduces only a few free parameters, all with a clear physical meaning, such as the brane tension which is related to the cosmological constant. From the tight constraints on the gravitational waves speed, we are naturally led to consider the non-relativistic limit of the model where the kinetic energy of the brane is small compared to its tension, that we study in the context of late-time cosmology. We show that the DBI-Galileon in the non-relativistic limit is an expansion around General Relativity (GR) which can be expressed as a shift-symmetric Horndeski theory. We develop the description of this theory at the background and perturbation level. However, by studying the scalar and tensor perturbations around a flat FLRW background, we find that they contain a ghost degree of freedom leading to a fatal instability of the vacuum for every combination of the free parameters. In order to avoid it in the more general cases of shift-symmetric Horndeski theories, we emphasize which of the Horndeski terms are in competition to produce this instability.

Gravity from thermodynamics: optimal transport and negative effective dimensions

Abstract:We prove an equivalence between the classical equations of motion governing vacuum gravity compactifications (and more general warped-product spacetimes) and a concavity property of entropy under time evolution. This is obtained by linking the theory of optimal transport to the Raychaudhuri equation in the internal space, where the warp factor introduces effective notions of curvature and (negative) internal dimension. When the Reduced Energy Condition is satisfied, concavity can be characterized in terms of the cosmological constant $\Lambda$; as a consequence, the masses of the spin-two Kaluza-Klein fields obey bounds in terms of $\Lambda$ alone. We show that some Cheeger bounds on the KK spectrum hold even without assuming synthetic Ricci lower bounds, in the large class of infinitesimally Hilbertian metric measure spaces, which includes D-brane and O-plane singularities. As an application, we show how some approximate string theory solutions in the literature achieve scale separation, and we construct a new explicit parametrically scale-separated AdS solution of M-theory supported by Casimir energy.
