Spectroscopic Signatures of Convection in the Spectrum of Procyon. Fundamental Parameters and Iron Abundance

Abstract:We have observed the spectrum of Procyon A (F5IV) from 4559 to 5780 A with a S/N of ~ 1e3 and a resolving power of 2e5. We have measured the line bisectors and relative line shifts of a large number of Fe I and Fe II lines, comparing them to those found in the Sun. A three-dimensional(3D) hydrodynamical model atmosphere has been computed and is tested against observations. The model reproduces in detail most of the features observed, although we identify some room for improvement. At all levels, the comparison of the 3D time-dependent calculations with the observed spectral lines shows a much better agreement than for classical homogeneous models, making it possible to refine previous estimates of the iron abundance, the projected rotational velocity, the limb-darkening, and the systemic velocity of the Procyon binary system. The difference between the iron abundance determined with the 3D model and its 1D counterpart is <~ 0.05 dex. We find consistency between the iron abundance derived from Fe I and Fe II lines, suggesting that departures from LTE in the formation of the studied lines are relatively small. The scatter in the iron abundance determined from different lines still exceeds the expectations from the uncertainties in the atomic data, pointing out that one or more components in the modeling can be refined further.

Abstract:The cosmology of Kaluza–Klein (KK) gravitinos in models with extra dimensions is considered. The main result is that the production of such KK modes is not compatible with an epoch of non-standard expansion after inflation. This is so because the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) constraint on the zero mode forces the reduced five-dimensional Planck mass M5 down to values much smaller than the usual four-dimensional one yields, but this in turn implies that many KK states are available for a given temperature. Once these states are taken into account one finds that there is no M5 for which the KK gravitinos produced satisfy BBN and overclosure constraints. This conclusion holds for both flat and warped models in which only gravity propagates in the full spacetime.

Abstract:We consider the simplest scenario when black strings / cigars penetrate the cosmological brane. As a result, the brane has a Swiss-cheese structure, with Schwarzschild black holes immersed in a Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker brane. There is no dark radiation in the model, the cosmological regions of the brane are characterized by a cosmological constant $\Lambda $ and flat spatial sections. Regardless of the value of $\Lambda $, these brane-world universes forever expand and forever decelerate. The totality of source terms in the modified Einstein equation sum up to a dust, establishing a formal equivalence with the general relativistic Einstein-Straus model. However in this brane-world scenario with black strings the evolution of the cosmological fluid strongly depends on $\Lambda $. For $\Lambda \leq 0$ it has positive energy density $\rho $ and negative pressure $p$ and at late times it behaves as in the Einstein-Straus model. For (not too high) positive values of $\Lambda $ the cosmological evolution begins with positive $\rho $ and negative $p$, but this is followed by an epoch with both $\rho $ and $p$ positive. Eventually, $\rho $ becomes negative, while $p$ stays positive. A similar evolution is present for high positive values of $\Lambda $, however in this case the evolution ends in a pressure singularity, accompanied by a regular behaviour of the cosmic acceleration. This is a novel type of singularity appearing in brane-worlds.

Loitering Phase in Brane Gas Cosmology

Abstract:Brane Gas Cosmology (BGC) is an approach to M-theory cosmology in which the initial state of the Universe is taken to be small, dense and hot, with all fundamental degrees of freedom near thermal equilibrium. Such a starting point is in close analogy with the Standard Big Bang (SBB) model. The topology of the Universe is assumed to be toroidal in all nine spatial dimensions and is filled with a gas of p-branes. The dynamics of winding modes allow, at most, three spatial dimensions to become large, thus explaining the origin of our macroscopic 3+1-dimensional Universe. Here we conduct a detailed analysis of the loitering phase of BGC. We do so by including into the equations of motion that describe the dilaton gravity background some new equations which determine the annihilation of string winding modes into string loops. Specific solutions are found within the model that exhibit loitering, i.e. the Universe experiences a short phase of slow contraction during which the Hubble radius grows larger than the physical extent of the Universe. As a result the brane problem (generalized domain wall problem) in BGC is solved. The initial singularity and horizon problems of the SBB scenario are solved without relying on an inflationary phase.

The Cosmological Impact of Brane-Chern-Simons Massive Gravity

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel extension of massive gravity theory; the Brane-Chern-Simons massive gravity theory. We explore the cosmological implications of this theory by deriving the background equations and demonstrating the existence of self-accelerating solutions. Interestingly, our theory suggests the existence of self-accelerating mechanisms that originate from an effective cosmological constant, leading to intriguing possibilities for understanding the nature of cosmic acceleration. Furthermore, we perform a tensor perturbation analysis to investigate the propagation of gravitational waves in this framework. We derive the dispersion relation for gravitational waves and study their behavior in the Friedmann-Lemaître-Roberson-Waker cosmology within the context of Brane-Chen-Simons massive gravity. Utilizing the latest Union2 type Ia supernova dataset comprising $557$ SNIa events, we provide observational support for our theoretical framework, indicating that the Brane-Chern-Simons massive gravity theory is consistent with cosmological observations.

Orbits in the H2O molecule

Abstract:We study the forms of the orbits in a symmetric configuration of a realistic model of the H2O molecule with particular emphasis on the periodic orbits. We use an appropriate Poincaré surface of section (PSS) and study the distribution of the orbits on this PSS for various energies. We find both ordered and chaotic orbits. The proportion of ordered orbits is almost 100% for small energies, but decreases abruptly beyond a critical energy. When the energy exceeds the escape energy there are still non-escaping orbits around stable periodic orbits. We study in detail the forms of the various periodic orbits, and their connections, by providing appropriate stability and bifurcation diagrams.

Abstract:We consider ``brane universe'' with nonzero tension in the models with large extra dimensions. We find exact solutions of higher-dimensional Einstein equations with single flat Minkowsky brane of arbitrary large tension (or brane cosmological constant) and compact extra dimensions. The brane curves the bulk space-time in a small region around it. There is no fine tuning of energy scales in our model.

Abstract:Plausible cause and effect of the big bang model are presented without violating conventional laws of physics. The initial cosmological singularity is resolved by introducing the uncertainty principle of quantum theory. We postulate that, preceding the big bang at the end of the gravitational collapse, the total observed mass including all forms of energy of the universe condensed into the primordial black hole (PBH) in a state of isotropic and minimal chaos (i.e., nearest to the absolute zero temperature). The frozen energy of the collapsed state is quantized such that each quantum of frozen energy (the cosmic particle) is characterized by the fundamental constants of the general theory of relativity and of quantum theory. The minimum size and minimum lifetime of the cosmic particle are estimated within the framework of the uncertainty principle. It is considered that these cosmic particles are bosons with intrinsic spin zero. The minimum size and thermodynamic properties of the PBH are estimated within the framework of the Bose-Einstein statistics by taking into account the total observed mass of the universe. The mechanism of the big bang is given and the currently accepted Planck temperature at the beginning of the big bang is predicted. The critical mass density, the mean mass density, and the missing mass are calculated as a function of the Hubble time of expansion. Our calculations show that the universe is closed but expanding. However, the universe remains inside the event horizon of the primordial black hole. Subj-class: cosmology: theory - pre-big bang physics; post-big bang effect.

Brane universes tested by supernovae

Abstract:We discuss observational constrains coming from supernovae Ia \cite{Perlmutter99} imposed on the behaviour of the Randall-Sundrum models. In the case of dust matter on the brane, the difference between the best-fit general relativistic model with a $\Lambda$-term \cite{Perlmutter99} and the best-fit brane models becomes detectable for redshifts $z > 0.6$. It is interesting that brane models predict brighter galaxies for such redshifts which is in agreement with the measurement of the $z = 1.7$ supernova \cite{Riess01} and with the New Data from the High Z Supernovae Search Team \cite{schmit02}. We also demonstrate that the fit to supernovae data can also be obtained, if we admit the "super-negative" dark energy $p = - (4/3) \varrho$ on the brane, where the dark energy in a way mimics the influence of the cosmological constant. It also appears that the dark energy enlarges the age of the universe which is demanded in cosmology. Finally, we propose to check for dark radiation and brane tension by the application of the angular diameter of galaxies minimum value test.

Abstract:We investigate the physically accepted solutions of general Braneworldscenarios, scanning uniformly the associated parameter space. Without makingany further assumptions we find that solutions which give "small" Hubbleparameters on the physical brane, and therefore "small" effective cosmologicalconstants on the 4D Universe, are far more probable than those with "large"ones. Eventually, their distribution tends to the δ-function in thelimit of continuous covering of the parameter space.

Abstract:We consider a brane-world of co-dimension one without reflection symmetry. Through it, we give a possible explanation of the great discrepancy between the vacuum energy and the observed cosmological constant without contradiction to the knowledge we have about our Universe. We also show the gravity observed will be standard four-dimensional gravity as long as the discrepancy of the bulk cosmological constant at different sides of the brane is small enough.

Abstract:We report strong cosmological constraints on the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory of gravity using Cosmic Microwave Background data from <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Planck.We" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> consider two types of models. First, the initial condition of the scalar field is fixed to give the same effective gravitational strength $G_{eff}$ today as the one measured on the Earth, $G_N$. In this case the BD parameter $\omega$ is constrained to $\omega > 692$ at the $99\%$ confidence level, an order of magnitude improvement over previous <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://constraints.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> the second type the initial condition for the scalar is a free parameter leading to a somewhat stronger constraint of $\omega > 890$ while $G_{eff}$ is constrained to $0.981 <\frac{G_{eff}}{G_N} <1.285$ at the same confidence level. We argue that these constraints have greater validity than for the BD theory and are valid for any Horndeski theory, the most general second-order scalar-tensor theory, which approximates BD on cosmological scales. In this sense, our constraints place strong limits on possible modifications of gravity that might explain cosmic acceleration.

Abstract:Within the mini-superspace model, brane-like cosmology means performing the variation with respect to the embedding (Minkowski) time $\tau$ before fixing the cosmic (Einstein) time $t$. The departure from Einstein limit is parameterized by the 'energy' conjugate to $\tau$, and characterized by a classically disconnected Embryonic epoch. In contrast with canonical quantum gravity, the wave-function of the brane-like Universe is (i) $\tau$-dependent, and (ii) vanishes at the Big Bang. Hartle-Hawking and Linde proposals dictate discrete 'energy' levels, whereas Vilenkin proposal resembles $\alpha$-particle disintegration.
