Abstract:Recently, branes in supergravity have become an indispensable tool even for traditional relativists. The purpose of this manuscript is to provide a pedagogical account of the brane technology so that the relativists can use branes in their study. The type IIA supergravity theory is mainly discussed and other cases are briefly mentioned. The repulson singularity is also explained as an interesting application.

Abstract:Linear stability of brane induced gravity in two codimensions on a static pure tension background is investigated. The brane is regularized as a ring of finite circumference in extra space. By explicitly calculating the vacuum persistence amplitude of the corresponding quantum theory, we show that the parameter space is divided into two regions—one corresponding to a stable Minkowski vacuum on the brane and one being plagued by ghost instabilities. This analytical result affirms a recent nonlinear, but mainly numerical analysis. The main result is that the ghost is absent for a sufficiently large brane tension, in perfect agreement with a value expected from a natural effective field theory point of view. Unfortunately, the linearly stable parameter regime is either ruled out phenomenologically or becomes unstable for nontrivial cosmologies. We argue that supercritical brane backgrounds constitute the remaining window of opportunity. In the special case of a tensionless brane, we find that the ghost exists for all phenomenologically relevant values of the induced gravity scale. Regarding this case, there are contradicting results in the literature, and we are able to fully resolve this controversy by explicitly uncovering the errors made in the “no-ghost” analysis. Finally, a Hamiltonian analysis generalizes the ghost result to more than two codimensions.

Abstract:What would the universe be like if we would give up the principle of equivalence and as a consequence incorporate gravity on a more traditional interaction basis within the theory of special relativity? The current work proposes such a gravitational model where a new law of gravitation is expressed in a Lorentz invariant form and is simultaneously in great agreement with many observations (including general relativity). We find the following predictions so far to be consistent with observations: (1) precession formulas explaining, for example, the Mercury apsidal precession, (2) gravitational bending of light near the limb of a massive object, (3) gravitational redshift, (4) escape velocity near a black hole, (5) several relativistic orbit details are derived in the strong field regime and found to be consistent with GR and also the observed shadow of the M87 black hole. Curved space effects such as gravitational time dilation or Shapiro delay cannot be explained within the realms of special relativity (Sect. 3.11).

Abstract:The focus of this paper is to investigate the behavior of a codimension-one thick brane in the modified symmetric teleparallel gravity structure , where Q is the nonmetricity scalar and is the trace of the energy–momentum tensor. Additionally, we examine whether braneworld scenarios are stable under small tensor perturbations and identify the associated massive and resonant modes. Our results indicate that the parameters controlling the modifications to the gravitational model-specifically those affecting nonmetricity and the energy–momentum tensor-significantly influence both the location and existence of these modes.

Brane induced gravity: From a no-go to a no-ghost theorem

Abstract:Numerous claims in the literature suggest that gravity induced on a higher codimensional surface violates unitarity in the weak coupling regime. However, it remained unclear, why a conserved source localized on this surface and giving rise to an induced gravity term at low energies would absorb and emit the associated ghost, given a consistent source-free theory. In this article it is shown that the appearance of the induced Einstein-Hilbert term does not threaten the unitarity of the theory. It is shown that the would-be ghost highlighted in previous works is nondynamical and therefore not associated with a state in the Hilbert space. The physics arguments behind this statement are presented in a semicovariant language, but the detailed proof is given using Dirac’s constraint analysis. The Hamiltonian on the constraint surface of the linearized theory is derived and turns out to be manifestly positive definite. As a result of these investigations, brane-induced gravity goes without a ghost, opening an exciting window of opportunity for consistent deformations of gravity at the largest observable distances.

Abstract:A fundamental assumption in the theory of brane world is that all matter and radiation are confined on the four-dimensional brane and only gravitons can propagate in the five-dimensional bulk spacetime. The brane world theory did not provide an explanation for the existence of electromagnetic fields and the origin of the electromagnetic field equation. In this paper, we propose a model for explaining the existence of electromagnetic fields on a brane and deriving the electromagnetic field equation. Similar to the case in Kaluza-Klein theory, we find that electromagnetic fields and the electromagnetic field equation can be derived from the five-dimensional Einstein field equation. However, the derived electromagnetic field equation differs from the Maxwell equation by containing a term with the electromagnetic potential vector coupled to the spacetime curvature tensor. So it can be considered as generalization of the Maxwell equation in a curved spacetime. The gravitational field equation on the brane is also derived with the stress-energy tensor for electromagnetic fields explicitly included and the Weyl tensor term explicitly expressed with matter fields and their derivatives in the direction of the extra-dimension. The model proposed in the paper can be regarded as unification of electromagnetic and gravitational interactions in the framework of brane world theory.

Abstract:Various attempts to go beyond the theory of General Relativity start from the assumption that spacetime is not a 4-dimensional but rather a higher-dimensional manifold. Among others, braneworld scenarios postulate that the spacetime we effectively observe is actually a 4-dimensional brane embedded in a higher-dimensional spacetime. In general, braneworld models predict a departure from the Newton gravity law in the nonrelativistic regime. Based on this fact, we propose an experimental test that uses a pair of gravitationally interacting identical particles to determine the validity of certain braneworld models and provide numerical results that should be compared with experimental data. In particular, we consider the Randal-Sundrum braneworld model and study two cases of 5-dimensional gravity theories: the Einstein-Hilbert gravity with the negative cosmological constant and the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (nearly-Chern-Simons) gravity.

Abstract:This paper is aimed at a (mostly) pedagogical exposition of the derivation of the motion equations of certain modifications of general relativity. Here we derive in all detail the motion equations in the Brans-Dicke theory with the cubic self-interaction. This is a modification of the Brans-dicke theory by the addition of a term in the Lagrangian which is non-linear in the derivatives of the scalar field: it contains second-order derivatives. This is the basis of the so-called Brans-Dicke Galileon. We pay special attention to the variational principle and to the algebraic details of the derivation. It is shown how higher order derivatives of the fields appearing in the intermediate computations cancel out leading to second order motion equations. The reader will find useful tips for the derivation of the field equations of modifications of general relativity such as the scalar-tensor theories and $f(R)$ theories, by means of the (stationary action) variational principle. The content of this paper is specially recommended to those graduate and postgraduate students who are interested in the study of the mentioned modifications of general relativity.

Modelling a Parasystolic Rhythm in a Heart-Transplant Patient

Abstract:A parasystole from a heart-transplant patient is analysed using a beat-to-beat RR interval time series obtained from an electrocardiogram (ECG). The dysrhythmia, resulting from the co-existence of two pacemakers, the sinus node and an ectopic focus, presents distinctive regular patterns, with transitions from one pattern to another occurring abruptly. It is shown that the parasystolic rhythm can be simulated by a model involving two oscillators firing at fixed rates, under the restriction that neither is allowed to fire during the other's refractory period. It is found that the structure of the generated RR time series is essentially determined by the ratio of the period of the two oscillators. In the case of a heart-transplant patient with a small heart-rate variability as a result of heart denervation, the model predicts the RR intervals with an error of less than 6% for an 80-beat sequence. From a physiological point of view, the results imply that the interaction between the two pacemakers in the heart is fairly weak, and hence the parasystole observed in the heart-transplant patient can be modelled as a pure parasystole.

A viable relativistic scalar theory of gravitation

Abstract:We build a self-consistent relativistic scalar theory of gravitation on a flat Minkowski spacetime from a general field Lagrangian. It is shown that, for parameters that satisfy the Equivalence Principle, this theory predicts the same outcome as general relativity for every classical solar-system test. This theory also admits gravitational waves that propagate at the speed of light, and the gravitational radiation energy loss in a binary system is shown to be very similar to the GR prediction. We then analyze the strong gravity regime of the theory for a spherically symmetric configuration and find that there is an effective "singularity" near the Schwarzschild radius. The main goal of this work is to show that, contrary to what is commonly believed, there are relativistic scalar theories of gravitation defined on a Minkowski spacetime that are not ruled out by the classical solar system tests of general relativity.

Abstract:A special-relativistic scalar-vector theory of gravitation is presented which mimics an important class of solutions of Einstein's gravitational field equations. The theory includes solutions equivalent to Schwarzschild, Kerr, Reissner-Nordstroem, and Friedman metrics as well as to gravitational waves. In fact, all the empirical tests until now due to general relativity can be explained within this flat spacetime theory.

Abstract:We discuss theoretical formalisms concerning with experimental verification of General Relativity (GR). Non-metric generalizations of GR are considered and a system of postulates is formulated for metric-affine and Finsler gravitational theories. We consider local observer reference frames to be a proper tool for comparing predictions of alternative theories with each other and with the observational data. Integral formula for geodesic deviation due to the deformation of connection is obtained. This formula can be applied for calculations of such effects as the bending of light and time-delay in presence of non-metrical effects.
Spectroscopic Signatures of Convection in the Spectrum of Procyon. Fundamental Parameters and Iron Abundance

Abstract:We have observed the spectrum of Procyon A (F5IV) from 4559 to 5780 A with a S/N of ~ 1e3 and a resolving power of 2e5. We have measured the line bisectors and relative line shifts of a large number of Fe I and Fe II lines, comparing them to those found in the Sun. A three-dimensional(3D) hydrodynamical model atmosphere has been computed and is tested against observations. The model reproduces in detail most of the features observed, although we identify some room for improvement. At all levels, the comparison of the 3D time-dependent calculations with the observed spectral lines shows a much better agreement than for classical homogeneous models, making it possible to refine previous estimates of the iron abundance, the projected rotational velocity, the limb-darkening, and the systemic velocity of the Procyon binary system. The difference between the iron abundance determined with the 3D model and its 1D counterpart is <~ 0.05 dex. We find consistency between the iron abundance derived from Fe I and Fe II lines, suggesting that departures from LTE in the formation of the studied lines are relatively small. The scatter in the iron abundance determined from different lines still exceeds the expectations from the uncertainties in the atomic data, pointing out that one or more components in the modeling can be refined further.

Gravity from thermodynamics in vacuum: Lorentz invariance and the role of Bel-Robinson tensor

Abstract:Thermodynamics of local causal horizons have been shown to encode the information necessary to derive the equations governing the gravitational dynamics. We have previously shown that, in the presence of matter, this derivation further implies quantum phenomenological corrections to gravitational dynamics. Herein, we study whether similar corrections also occur in vacuum. We show that, under the assumptions of locality and local Lorentz invariance of physics, the vacuum dynamics is prescribed by the Einstein equations. We also discuss an alternative paradigm which assumes the existence of a preferred direction of time (much like in Einstein-aether or Hořava-Lifshitz gravity). Then, we find an modified gravitational dynamics in which Ricci curvature is sourced by Bel-Robinson super-energy.
