Abstract:This paper is aimed at a (mostly) pedagogical exposition of the derivation of the motion equations of certain modifications of general relativity. Here we derive in all detail the motion equations in the Brans-Dicke theory with the cubic self-interaction. This is a modification of the Brans-dicke theory by the addition of a term in the Lagrangian which is non-linear in the derivatives of the scalar field: it contains second-order derivatives. This is the basis of the so-called Brans-Dicke Galileon. We pay special attention to the variational principle and to the algebraic details of the derivation. It is shown how higher order derivatives of the fields appearing in the intermediate computations cancel out leading to second order motion equations. The reader will find useful tips for the derivation of the field equations of modifications of general relativity such as the scalar-tensor theories and $f(R)$ theories, by means of the (stationary action) variational principle. The content of this paper is specially recommended to those graduate and postgraduate students who are interested in the study of the mentioned modifications of general relativity.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Attempts to Solve This paper aims to derive in detail the equations of motion in certain modified theories of general relativity (such as the Brans-Dicke theory), particularly the Brans-Dicke Galileon model that includes higher-order derivative terms of the scalar field. Specifically, the authors derive these equations through the variational principle (principle of least action or stationary action principle) and pay special attention to the algebraic details in the variational process. The main objectives of the paper are: 1. **Detailed Derivation of Equations of Motion**: The authors systematically demonstrate the typical steps and nuances in the variational process, which are often not detailed in standard research papers. 2. **Explaining the Impact of Higher-Order Derivative Terms**: The paper focuses on how to handle terms that include higher-order derivatives of the scalar field, which appear as higher-order derivatives in intermediate calculations but ultimately cancel out, resulting in second-order equations of motion. 3. **Providing Educational Resources**: The content of the paper is particularly recommended for graduate and doctoral students, helping them learn how to derive the equations of motion in modified theories of general relativity (such as scalar-tensor theories and f(R) theories). ### Main Contributions - **Detailed Derivation Process**: The paper provides a detailed variational process, including the independent variations of the metric and scalar field, as well as the variations of self-interaction terms that include higher-order derivative terms. - **Educational Value**: By detailing each step, the paper helps students understand and master the variational principle and its applications, enabling them to independently derive the necessary equations of motion in their research. - **Application Examples**: The paper also discusses the application of the Brans-Dicke Galileon model in cosmology, particularly its behavior in the context of an accelerating expanding universe. ### Conclusion Through this paper, readers can gain an in-depth understanding of how to use the variational principle to derive the equations of motion in modified theories of general relativity, especially complex models that include higher-order derivative terms. This is a highly valuable resource for graduate and doctoral students, aiding them in making progress in their research in related fields.
