Abstract:The size-controlled synthesis of barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanocrystals has been achieved by a hydrothermal route with Fe doping and ethylenediamine (en) addition. The as-synthesized BaTiO3 nanocrystals were characterized with XRD, SEM, TEM, and HRTEM. The results revealed that the average particle sizes of Fe-doped samples were reduced compared to that of the sample without Fe doping, suggesting that the doping ions inhibited the crystal growth. It was also found that the average particle size decreased as the Fe doping concentration increased. Furthermore, the addition of en, which served as both solvent and capping agent, could suppress the particle growth and lead to the change in particle shape from sphere to cube by a confined effect.

Abstract:Hematite (α-Fe2O3) is a thermodynamically stable crystallographic phase of iron oxide and has attractive applications in many areas. By using a simple hydrothermal method, we synthesized smooth hematite microcubes and porous hematite microcubes. The as-synthesized microcubes have uniform edge lengths of about 1 μm. The magnetic, electrochemical properties and gas sensing performance to some organic gases were investigated, revealing the potential applications in various fields. By tuning the experimental parameters, such as source and solvent, we are able to tunably produce goethite (FeOOH) nanowires, and hematite nanoparticles, nanorods, and nanoplatelets and the formation mechanism was also discussed.

Abstract:Monodispersed and single‐crystalline hematite (α‐Fe2O3) cubes have been successfully prepared by a template‐free hydrothermal synthetic route with FeCl3 and CH3COONH4. The influences of the reactant concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time on the crystal growth were systematically investigated. The results show that the monodisperse hematite cubes with high crystalline and narrow size distribution could be fabricated at the hydrothermal temperature of 160 °C for 24 h while the concentrations of FeCl3 and CH3COONH4 were in the range of 0.03‐0.5 M and 0.05‐0.1 M, respectively. In addition, the formation mechanism of hematite cube is also proposed, where the CH3COONH4 plays a role of shape controller in the formation of cube hematite structure. Abstract:Ferromagnetic α-Fe2O3 nanoplatelets with diameters of 100–140nm and heights of 40–70nm have been successfully prepared on a large-scale through double anion mediation hydrothermal method. The formation of the nanoplatelets depends on the molar ratio of hydrosulfite ions to sulfate ions. Nanoplatelets, short nanocolumns, polyhedra and a mixture of nanospheres and nanoellipsoids of α-Fe2O3 can be obtained by adjusting the molar ratio of HSO3− to SO42−. Compared to short nanocolumns, nanoplatelets display a smaller saturation magnetization of 7.36emu/g and a smaller coercivity value of 485Oe.

Abstract:A simple hydrothermal synthesis method was reported for the preparation of various hematite hierarchical structures in a dual-surfactant system, such as stalactite-like, cluster-like and coral-like and so on. The mechanism of formation was studied by adjusting the experimental parameters, and it was found that both oleate and citrate played important roles in the process. Citrate is believed to act as an "etching" reagent in our experiment. The samples obtained were dispersed in a water-hexane mixture to study their surface nature by considering the difference in the lypohydrophilic properties of the oleate and citrate groups. Meanwhile, study of their magnetic properties determined that the oleate and citrate played similar roles in influencing a reductive reaction to convert Fe3+ to Fe2+.

Abstract:The selected-control synthesis of uniform alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with morphologies of rhombohedra, rods, and Cubes was Successfully achieved in large quantities by the capping agent-cationic surfactant-CTAB-mediated hydrolysis of FeCl3. The nanoparticles were obtained when the concentration of FeCl3 ranged from 0.01 to 0.05 M Lit 120 degrees C. The growth mechanisms of alpha-Fe2O3 nanorhombohedra, nanorods, and nanocubes were analysed in detail, based oil the topotactic transformation of the precursor beta-FeOOH with different morphologies under the capping agent mediation. The concentration of FeCl3, the reaction temperature, and the concentration of CTAB are all responsible for the final crystalline morphologies of the alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles. This result may facilitate not only the exploration of controlled approaches of preparing alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles for potential technical applications but also a deeper understanding of the fundamental physical and chemical processes of hydrothermal methods. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) were used to characterize the products.

Abstract:Pure hematite nanoparticles (HNPs) were successfully synthesized via the simple precipitation route by using ferric sulfate precursor and ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) precipitant. The current study reports the effects of precursor concentrations, from 0.05 to 0.45 M, on the product size, morphology, crystallinity, and lumps formation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data confirmed the synthesis of pristine HNPs having a rhombohedrally centered hexagonal structure. In addition, the particle size effect on the XRD peak shifting was studied and found to be consistent with the calculated size results by Scherer equation. Transmission electron microscopy revealed mixed polygonal and hexagonal morphologies with an average size of (16-44 nm) depending on the precursor concentration. Scanning electron microscopy depicts lots of agglomerations and lumps with increasing the precursor concentration. Raman spectra not only show the seven phonon modes of pristine hematite phase but also confirm the evolution of the crystal structure with concentration. Thermal analyses proved that the synthesized alpha-Fe2O3 products in the current work using 0.05 M precursor concentration are well crystallized at around approximate to 464 degrees C. Thus, current work presents smaller-sized HNPs crystallized at lower temperature ranges with different morphologies and higher probable vulnerable facets compared to previous studies. This will show improved properties and give rise to higher potentials for various applications. Furthermore, it verifies that the precursor nature is the key factor affecting both size and morphology, whereas, precursor concentration not only affects the particle size as reported previously but also crystallinity, morphology development, and lumps formation of the final product.

Abstract:Hematite microcapsules with and without etching are fabricated controllably through adjusting the synthesis temperature via a 3,3-thiodipropionic acid (TPA)-assisted hydrothermal synthesis method. Hematite nanorods can be obtained after the calcination of akaganeite nanorods which were prepared at a low synthesis temperature. Based on the experimental results, it is suggested that at the early stage the synthesis of akaganeite and hematite samples involves the hydrolysis of ferric chloride to promote nucleation in the presence of TPA and subsequently experiences the coordination-assisted growth guided by the ligand of TPA. Magnetic hysteresis measurements show that the size and shape of the hematite micro-/nanostructures have important effects on their magnetic properties. Furthermore, hematite nanorods display the best electrochemical sensing behavior toward the reduction of H2O2 among these hematite samples.

Abstract:Hematite particles with various shapes have been synthesized through a simple hydrothermal reaction. The particle shape and size can be controlled by adjusting pH value in the starting solution. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction patterns (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), FT-IR, TG-DTA and mass spectrometry of gas species during TC-DTA. Abstract:Novel hematite mesocrystals including hierarchical microcones and microdiscs were synthesized by selective HCl etching of hematite pseudocubes. These porous mesocrystals adopting a single-crystal-like structure consist of radially aligned alpha-Fe2O3 nanorods, which elucidates the intrinsic mesocrystalline structure of the initial hematite pseudocubes. The hematite mesocrystals exhibited enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity and high Cr(VI) removal capacity. This result provides an effective top-down approach towards mesocrystals with tunable morphologies and architectures.

Abstract:Hematite nanocubes with a broad size distribution have been synthesized by the decomposition of an iron−oleate complex under hydrothermal conditions, which was prepared from the reaction of iron chloride and sodium oleate. Well-defined assembly of uniform nanocubes with an average size of 15 nm can be obtained after a simple size-selection process. The molar ratio of iron chloride to sodium oleate and hydrothermal temperature had a crucial influence on the morphology of hematite nanopaticles in the synthesis. The blocking temperature of hematite nanocubes was ca. 80 K with an external field of 100 Oe, and they were superparamagnetic at room temperature. A cyclohexane-dispersed colloidal solution of hematite nanocubes showed a strong shape-dependent adsorption peak at 230 nm in the UV−vis spectrum. This synthesis approach is expected to become a general method for the preparation of other uniform nanoparticles with unique shapes such as cobalt and nickel oxides and so on.

Abstract:Inorganic nanoparticles with controlled size and shape are technologically important due to the strong correlation between these parameters and magnetic, electrical, and catalytic properties. Herein we demonstrated that under appropriate conditions, rodlike α-FeOOH (goethite) and porous fusiform α-Fe2O3 (hematite) uniform nanocrystallines could be selectively synthesized in large quantities via a facile surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) assisted hydrothermal synthetic route. The morphology and structure of the final products were investigated in detail by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The probable formation mechanism of the α-FeOOH and α-Fe2O3 uniform nanoparticles was discussed on the basis of the experimental results.

Abstract:The synthesis, morphological characterization, and colloidal properties of Hematite nanoparticles (hemNP) with different sizes and shapes were presented. To prepare hemNP we used hydrothermal synthesis with different combinations of reaction conditions. Various characterization techniques involving XRD, TEM, AFM and DLS were employed to describe the dependence of the hemNP size, charge and morphology on different synthesis conditions. Spheroidal Hematite nanoparticles from 20 to 60 nm were obtained by varying the rate of addition of iron precursor solutions and the aging time (Δt) at ca. 100∘C. The transformation from Ferrihydrite to Hematite (α-Fe2O3) started with a burst nucleation of nanosized crystallites, followed by a first-order kinetic growth of primary grains up to a final threshold size of ca 30 nm. Colloidal behavior was also checked at pH 4 and 7, finding interparticle aggregation at circumneutral pH only for hemNP obtained for Δt<2 h. Electrophoretic ζ potential measurements yield positive values at pH 4 and negative at pH 7. The shifts in (IEP) at lower values depended on the adsorption of appreciable counterions on the particle surface and reduced at pH 7 the charge–charge repulsion, whereas the attractive forces became predominant. The results confirmed that the particle size of the Hematite nanoparticle critically affected their colloidal behavior with significant consequences for sorption and aggregation processes. Particularly for low particle sizes of the order of 10–20 nm, the surface charge and surface reactivity also could differ in important ways compared to 40–60 nm size particles.

Abstract:Magnetite Fe3O4 nanoparticles and uniform hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) oblique hexagonal microdisks, drum-like particles, and spindles have been synthesized via a facile hydrothermal reaction route, in which the mixture solvents of ethylene glycol (EG) and water are used as reaction medium. The phase, size, shape and growth orientation of the synthesized iron oxide crystals were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. When the reaction medium is almost composed of EG, a lot of Fe3+ ions reduce to Fe2+ ions due to the effect of EG, resulting in the magnetite Fe3O4 nanoparticles. As the volume ratio of EG/water in the reaction medium is lower than 30:10, the reductive ability of EG is too low to reduce the Fe3+ ions to Fe2+ ions, leading to the hematite alpha-Fe2O3 crystals. Moreover, since the adsorption of EG on the crystals, the shape of the obtained hematite alpha-Fe2O3 crystals evolves from oblique hexagonal microdisks to drum-like particles, and spindles due to the decrease of EG in the mixture reaction medium solvent. The magnetic properties of the magnetite Fe3O4 nanoparticles and hematite alpha-Fe2O3 uniform microcrystals were also investigated by measuring the magnetic hysteresis loops. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Through a relatively low temperature solution route, hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) nanorhombohedras with average particle size of 35 run were synthesized in high yield. The final products were investigated by a variety of characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Raman spectrum. As a steric stabilizer and capping agent, the roles of PVP played in the whole process were discussed. And the magnetic property of the nanorhombohedras at low temperature was examined, exhibiting weakly ferromagnetic characteristic, which deviates from the behavior of the corresponding bulk material and might be ascribed to the presence of small crystals in a few regions of the sample. Abstract:New, non-hydrolytic routes to synthesize highly crystalline iron oxide nanocrystals (8-40 nm, magnetite) are described in this report whereby particle size and morphology were precisely controlled through reactant (precursor, e.g. (FeO(OH)) ratios, co-surfactant and organic additive, and/or reaction time. Particle size, with high monodispersivity (<10%), is demonstrated to be a function of precursor concentrations and through the addition of different cosurfactants and/or additives, cubic, octahedral, potato-like, and flower-like iron oxide nanocrystals can be reproducibly synthesized through simple one-pot thermal decomposition methods. High resolution transmission electron microscope, x-ray diffraction, and superconducting quantum interference device were used to characterize the size, structure and magnetic properties of the resulting nanocrystals. For aqueous applications, materials synthesized/purified in organic solvents are broadly water dispersible through a variety of phase (aqueous) transfer method(s).

Abstract:Single‐crystalline α‐Fe 2 O 3 nanorods with a polyhedral configuration have been successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal process at 180°C. X‐ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy observations, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and selected area electron diffraction patterns were used to characterize the as‐synthesized samples. The result reveals that goethite nanorods were first generated and then transformed into hematite via dehydration in the successive hydrothermal treatment, in which the α‐Fe 2 O 3 inherited the rod‐like morphology of the goethite precursor. The effect of surfactant and treatment time on the phase and morphology of the final products has been studied, and a possible growth mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:Hematite (α-Fe2O3) crystals with uniform size and structure are synthesized through very facile one-pot hydrothermal methods without any additive. The as-synthesized sub-micrometer-sized α-Fe2O3 crystals with small surface areas perform superb visible light photodegradation activities, even much better than most other α-Fe2O3 nanostructures with large surface areas. Profound mechanism analyses reveal that the microwave-assisted hydrothermal (Mic-H) synthesized α-Fe2O3 is enclosed by 12 high-index {2-15} facets. The structure and the low unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the high-index planes result in the excellent photocatalytic activity. This is the first report on the formation of {2-15} plane group of hematite, and the synthesis of the hematite particles with the {2-15} planes is very simple and no any facet-controlling agent is used. This study may pave the way to further performance enhancement and practical applications of the cheap hematite materials.

Abstract:Nanostructure engineering of hematite is a promising strategy to overcome its performance limitations as a photodegradation catalyst for organic dyes or toxic organic chemicals. Precise control of exposed facets plays a vital role as an optimization strategy. Although great progress has been made in the synthesis of different crystal morphologies, design principles remain ad hoc, awaiting systematic control of facet expression within a clean synthesis protocol yielding versatile results. Herein, we report a simple method that enables precise morphology control to synthesize 2D hexagonal hematite nanosheets from two-line ferrihydrite. Nanosheet sizes and facet proportions were successfully tuned by changing the pH, the ratio of solvent ethanol to water, and the concentration of FeIII ions. The growth mechanism appears to involve a combination of ferrihydrite solid-state transformation and assembly into hematite, followed by an ion-by-ion growth that perfects the surface terminations. The finding helps to establish a rational basis for the design and optimization of hematite nanostructures.

Abstract:In the solvothermal synthesis process, the effect of NaOH dosages of from 0.3 g to 4.0 g on the morphology evolution(from nanoparticles to octahedra) of Fe3O4 crystals was carefully investigated. Meanwhile, the growth process of Fe3O4 crystals at different reaction time was also investigated. Furthermore, it has been found that the particle size and crystallinity of Fe3O4 crystals can be controlled by the dosages of NaOH. In this paper, the increases of both the reaction time and the NaOH concentrations correspond to a minimization process of surface energy for Fe3O4 crystals. During the synthesis process, the addition of N2H4·H2O and ethylene glycol in the magnetite not only facilitated the narrow distribution of particle size but also contributed to the formation of incontinuous multicavities with a diameter of about 5 nm.
