Abstract:We proposed a highly reproducible method that enables atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy investigations of the dynamics of nanoparticles in liquids. An ultrathin liquid layer was established as a result of formation of bubbles that was initiated and tuned by beam radiation. The migration, aggregation and rotation of palladium nanoparticles were observed.

Abstract:The thousandfold increase in data-collection speed enabled by aberration-corrected optics allows us to overcome an electron microscopy paradox - how to obtain atomic-resolution chemical structure in individual nanoparticles, yet record a statistically significant sample from an inhomogeneous population. This allowed us to map hundreds of Pt-Co nanoparticles to show atomic-scale elemental distributions across different stages of the catalyst aging in a proton-exchange-membrane fuel cell, and relate Pt-shell thickness to treatment, particle size, surface orientation, and ordering.

Abstract:Compositional segregation is an important physical phenomenon in alloy materials and has significant influences on their physical and chemical properties. In particular, segregation at the surface or subsurface can drastically change the molecular adsorption properties of alloy surfaces and thus becomes a promising way to design highly active catalysts. Understanding segregations in alloy catalyst nanoparticles at atomic level is therefore crucial yet still challenging for future catalyst designs. In this talk, we will highlight some of our recent works on nano segregation effect in shaped Pt alloy catalysts for fuel cell technologies. Particular attentions will be placed on the atomic imaging of nano segregation by using state-of-the-art ex-situ and in-situ aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). In particular, we discovered distinct compositional segregations in octahedral PtxNi1-x nanoparticles, which featured Pt-segregation at the edges/corners and Ni-segregation at the facets (Figure 1) . We explored the physical origin for these distinct segregation behaviors and their impact on the catalytic activities and stability for fuel cell reactions. This will be further complemented by in-situ STEM-EELS experiments to study the structural and compositional evolution of Pt alloy nanoparticles during nanoparticle synthesis, post thermal annealing and solution-phase electrocatalysis, shedding important light on catalyst designs with desired segregation patterns and chemical properties.

Abstract:High-resolution imaging with compositional and chemical sensitivity is crucial for a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines. Although synchrotron X-ray imaging through spectromicroscopy has been tremendously successful and broadly applied, it encounters challenges in achieving enhanced detection sensitivity, satisfactory spatial resolution, and high experimental throughput simultaneously. In this work, based on structured illumination, we develop a single-pixel X-ray imaging approach coupled with a generative image reconstruction model for mapping the compositional heterogeneity with nanoscale resolvability. This method integrates a full-field transmission X-ray microscope with an X-ray fluorescence detector and eliminates the need for nanoscale X-ray focusing and raster scanning. We experimentally demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by imaging a battery sample composed of mixed cathode materials and successfully retrieving the compositional variations of the imaged cathode particles. Bridging the gap between structural and chemical characterizations using X-rays, this technique opens up vast opportunities in the fields of biology, environmental, and materials science, especially for radiation-sensitive samples.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are an emerging class of materials, leveraging maximum atom utilization and distinctive structural and electronic properties to bridge heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis. Direct imaging methods, such as aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, are commonly applied to confirm the atomic dispersion of active sites. However, interpretations of data from these techniques can be challenging due to simultaneous contributions to intensity from impurities introduced during synthesis processes, as well as any variation in position relative to the focal plane of the electron beam. To address this matter, this paper presents a comprehensive study on two representative SACs containing isolated nickel or copper atoms. Spectroscopic techniques, including X-ray absorption spectroscopy, were employed to prove the high metal dispersion of the catalytic atoms. Employing scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging combined with single-atom-sensitive electron energy loss spectroscopy, we scrutinized thin specimens of the catalysts to provide an unambiguous chemical identification of the observed single-atom species and thereby distinguish impurities from active sites at the single-atom level. Overall, the study underscores the complexity of SACs characterization and establishes the importance of the use of spectroscopy in tandem with imaging at atomic resolution to fully and reliably characterize single-atom catalysts.

Abstract:Using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy, we present atomic-scale insights into the size-dependent degradation of Pt-Ni bimetallic oxygen reduction catalysts. We revealed that how particle size can influence the evolution of nanoporosity in the bimetallic nanoparticles and, consequently, their near surface composition, reactivity and stability during long-term electrode potential cycling.

Abstract:Recent technical advances in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and xray detector technology have made it possible to perform atomic-resolution chemical mapping using energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) [1]. This ability allows for establishing a direct correlation between atomic-scale STEM images, such as high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) images, and atomic-scale chemical EDS images, making chemical quantification of interfaces, defects and crystalline structure at the atomic-scale possible. Using these capabilities, we have lately quantified the chemical composition of an epitaxial (La0.7Sr0.3)MnO3 (LSMO)/BiFeO3 (BFO) quantum structure [2], cation occupancy in a Sm-doped SrTiO3 (STO) thin film and antiphase boundaries present within STO films [3], as well as determined structures of several intermetallic alloys [4]. In this study, we describe further use of these capabilities to quantify atomic-scale interdiffusion in self-assembled, vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN) thin films. Self-assembled VAN thin films, consisting of two immiscible components heteroepitaxially grown on single crystals, have experienced an increase in research activity in recent years [5]. These structures offer the advantage of utilizing the functionalities of both components with the possibility of tuning the material’s properties by tailoring the volume ratio of the two components, the interface-to-volume ratio and hetero-epitaxial strain. In addition, modification of interface properties such as structural and elemental distribution across the interface offers an additional dimension to generate new properties and functionalities. The atomic-scale characterization of the interface plays an essential role in understanding the structure-property relationships. Abstract:Multimodal scanning X‐ray microscopy with surface and bulk sensitivity, enabled by the simultaneous detection of emitted electrons and transmitted X‐rays, is introduced for the chemical imaging of 2D‐layered materials. This method allows the characterization of the local chemistry of individual Ti3C2Tx MXene flakes produced by different synthesis routes and after cycling in a Li‐ion battery. 2D layered materials, such as transition metal carbides or nitrides, known as MXenes, offer an ideal platform to investigate charge transfer processes in confined environment, relevant for energy conversion and storage applications. Their rich surface chemistry plays an essential role in the pseudocapacitive behavior of MXenes. However, the local distribution of surface functional groups over single flakes and within few‐ or multilayered flakes remains unclear. In this work, scanning X‐ray microscopy (SXM) is introduced with simultaneous transmission and electron yield detection, enabling multimodal nanoscale chemical imaging with bulk and surface sensitivity, respectively, of individual MXene flakes. The Ti chemical bonding environment is found to significantly vary between few‐layered hydrofluoric acid‐etched Ti3C2Tx MXenes and multilayered molten salt (MS)‐etched Ti3C2Tx MXenes. Postmortem analysis of MS‐etched Ti3C2Tx electrodes cycled in a Li‐ion battery further illustrates that simultaneous bulk and surface chemical imaging using SXM offers a method well adapted to the characterization of the electrode‐electrolyte interactions at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Joint strategy for surface chemistry Recent advances in the development of tip-based microscopy have led to angstrom-scale spatial resolution, but no technique provides univocal characterization of the structural and chemical heterogeneities of surface species. Using a model system of pentacene derivatives on the Ag(110) surface, Xu et al. show that the combination of scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and tip-enhanced Raman scattering provides the electronic, structural, and chemical information sufficiently correlated for an unambiguous characterization of the different—but structurally similar—chemical species and their interaction with the metal surface with single-bond resolution. The proposed multitechnique approach could find wide application in fundamental studies of heterogeneous catalysis and surface chemistry in general. Science , this issue p. 818

Abstract:The atomic motion of adatom and defects is a fundamental physics processes of surface diffusion involved in surface phase formation, epitaxial growth and heterogeneous catalysis. This is particularly important for surface-science-oriented applications of novel two-dimensional crystals where the diffusion pathway is material specific. In this letter we combine annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM) with 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) system to demonstrate direct observation of the kinetic pathway of diffusions of adatoms and vacancies in atomic details. The atomic imaging of metastable states and ab-initio DFT calculation allows us to build up a complete picture of a 3D atomic model of the atomic processes involved in their migration. We found that different kinetic mechanisms account for the surface diffusion of adatoms and in-plane migration of vacancies, which are associated with their different chemical bonding states and benefit us in catalysis design and mass transport in anode material.
