Abstract:Nanocluster structures It is difficult to determine the three-dimensional structure of ultrasmall nanoparticles as they are unstable and tend to interact with any incident electron beams used to examine them. Now, using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with imaging simulation, the size, shape, orientation and atomic arrangement of specially prepared size-selected gold nanoclusters have been determined to single-atom resolution. The particles were preformed in the gas phase and soft-landed on an amorphous carbon substrate. These materials are of interest for catalytic and biological applications.

Abstract:Unravelling three-dimensional structures and dynamical fluctuation of metal nanoclusters is critical to understanding reaction process and the origin of catalytic activity in many heterogeneous catalytic systems. We obtain three-dimensional structures of ultra-small Au clusters by combining aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, density functional theory calculations, and imaging simulations. The configurations of unique Au clusters are revealed at the atomic scale and the corresponding electronic states are given. The sequential observations reveal a transition of ultra-small Au clusters with about 25 atoms from a near-square to an elongated structure. We also find a transition from two dimensions to three dimensions for the Au clusters. The obtained three-dimensional geometry and associated electronic states help to clarify atomistic mechanism of shape- and number-dependent catalytic activities of Au clusters.

Abstract:An unambiguous determination of the three-dimensional structure of nanoparticles is challenging. Electron tomography requires a series of images taken for many different specimen orientations. This approach is ideal for stable and stationary structures. But ultrasmall nanoparticles are intrinsically structurally unstable and may interact with the incident electron beam, constraining the electron beam density that can be used and the duration of the observation. Here we demonstrate that high-angle annular dark field (HAADF) in a spherical-aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), coupled with imaging simulation, can be used to obtain a snapshot of the size, shape, orientation and atomic arrangement of size-selected metallic nanoclusters.

Abstract:We report real-space, atomic-resolution images of Au(20) clusters obtained with the aberration-corrected Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy. The proposed tetrahedral (FCC segment) pyramid structure is confirmed. The clusters cycle between isomers under the electron beam in the time-lapse images acquired. Disordered variants on the high symmetry forms are commonly observed. We believe that the direct experimental identification of these kinds of atomic structure, and the fluctuations between them, is fundamental to our understanding of nanoparticle structures, as well as applications such as heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:We report the imaging, mass spectrum, and dynamical behavior of adatoms and small clusters observed on the surface facets of size-selected, truncated octahedral gold clusters, Au-N (N = 923 +/- 23), via aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. Our quantitative atom counting measurements show that most (similar to 70%) of the species on the surface are single Au adatoms. Such species are now proposed as key elements of the atomic structure of both monolayer-protected nanoclusters (nanoparticles) and self-assembled monolayers and may also play a role in gold nanocatalysis. The adatoms are found on both {100} and {110 facets with similar probabilities.

Abstract:Deposition of size-selected nanoclusters assembled from atoms in the gas phase is a novel route to the fabrication of <10nm surface features. I will focus on the creation and atomic structure of monodispersed metal cluster arrays which enable new model catalysts and protein biochips. The atomic structure of the clusters – previously the province of theory - is revealed experimentally [1] by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) in the HAADF imaging regime; we can "count" atoms and obtain 3D information not just 2D projections. Results include mass spectrometry of thiolated Au clusters, adatom dynamics on Au923 magic-number nanoclusters [2], first atomic imaging results for Au55 and Au20 and a method to explore the potential energy landscape of (Au923) clusters via cluster transformations [3], presenting a reference system for theory. A new kind of cluster beam source, to allow super-abundant generation of size-selected nanoclusters, will also be demonstrated.

Abstract:Monolayer-protected (MP) Au clusters present attractive quantum systems with a range of potential applications e.g. in catalysis. Knowledge of the atomic structure is needed to obtain a full understanding of their intriguing physical and chemical properties. Here we employed aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (ac-STEM), combined with multislice simulations, to make a round-robin investigation of the atomic structure of chemically synthesised clusters with nominal composition Au(SCHCHPh) provided by two different research groups. The MP Au clusters were "weighed" by the atom counting method, based on their integrated intensities in the high angle annular dark field (HAADF) regime and calibrated exponent of the Z dependence. For atomic structure analysis, we compared experimental images of hundreds of clusters, with atomic resolution, against a variety of structural models. Across the size range 123-151 atoms, only 3% of clusters matched the theoretically predicted Au(SR) structure, while a large proportion of the clusters were amorphous (i.e. did not match any model structure). However, a distinct ring-dot feature, characteristic of local icosahedral symmetry, was observed in about 20% of the clusters.

Abstract:Gold clusters with icosabedral, decahedral, and cuboctahedral shell structures, have been studied using the Gupta many-body potential, to aid in the structural characterization of surface-deposited AU309 clusters using high-angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). In this size regime, the calculations indicate that the icosahedral geometries are lower in energy than the decahedral and cuboctahedral structures but that the energy differences are small. This is consistent with the spread of different geometries observed by HAADF-STEM. Analysis of the different outlines and intensity profies of the HAADFSTEM images indicate that there are roughly equal numbers of decahedral and cuboctahedral clusters on the surface. The unambiguous assignment of icosahedral geometries is more difficult because of the more-spherical nature of these nanoparticles. Because the experimental uncertainty in the deposited cluster size is 5%, a genetic algorithm has been used to search for the lowest energy isomers for AUN, clusters with N = 309 15 atoms. A variety of highly faceted structures have been found, many corresponding to incomplete or distorted icosahedra, including a puckered icosahedral geometry for N = 309.

Abstract:A size-selected beam of Au-923 +/- 20 clusters is generated in a gas-phase condensation cluster source equipped with a lateral time-of-flight mass selector. The beam current reaches up to 9.13 nA for small clusters and 80 pA for Au-923 +/- 20 clusters, which are then analyzed using a scanning transmission electron microscope. Four types of metastable structures are observed for the Au-923 +/- 20 clusters, including ino-decahedron (Dh), cuboctahedron and icosahedron (Ih). The proportion of bulk-favorable cuboctahedron (i.e.face center cubic (Fcc)) structure takes up only 10-20%, while the penta-rotating symmetrical structures (Dh/Ih) are the dominant ones which take up over three quarters. Changing the beam condition may optimize the clusters from Dh-dominant to the Ih-dominant phase, which paves the way towards nanoparticle control beyond the diameters.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of the clusters Au-13[PPh3](4)[S(CH2)(11)CH3](2)Cl-2 (1) and Au-13[PPh3](4)[S(CH2)(11)-CH3](4) (2) are described. These mixed-ligand, sub-nanometer clusters, prepared via exchange of dodecanethiol onto phosphine-halide gold clusters, show enhanced stability relative to the parent. The characterization of these clusters features the precise determination of the number of gold atoms in the cluster cores using high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, allowing the assignment of 13 gold atoms (+/- 3 atoms) to the composition of both cluster molecules. Electrochemical and optical measurements reveal discrete molecular orbital levels and apparent energy gaps of 1.6-1.7 eV for the two cluster molecules. The electrochemical measurements further indicate that the Au-13[PPh3](4)[S(CH2)(11)CH3](2)Cl-2 cluster undergoes an overall two-electron reduction. The electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of the two Au-13 cluster molecules are compared with those of a secondary synthetic product, which proved to be larger Au thiolate-derivatized monolayer-protected clusters with an average core of Au-180. The latter shows behavior fully consistent with the adoption of metallic-like properties.

Abstract:The ground state structures of copper clusters with different sizes along with their aggregation have been systematic investigated using Amsterdam Density Functional (ADF) and Atomistix ToolKit (ATK) programs. On the basis of geometry optimization, some Cu clusters with more stable structures which were not reported previously have been revealed. In most cases, these Cu clusters prefer to adopt icosahedral structures which originate from the 13-atom icosahedron. It has also been demonstrated that the interaction between two Cu clusters is anisotropic, which is attributed to their charge distribution, especially the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of Cu clusters. Moreover, we have carried out the simulation of Cu clusters aggregation on the silicone oil substrate by means of Monte Carlo (MC) method, which shows good consistence with our previous experimental studies.
Characterisation of the Morphology of Surface-Assembled Au Nanoclusters on Amorphous Carbon

Abstract:In this study, aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy is employed to investigate the morphology of Au clusters formed from the aggregation of single atoms sputtered onto an amorphous carbon surface. The morphologies of surface-assembled clusters of N > 100 atoms are referenced against the morphologies of size-selected clusters determined from previously published results. We observe that surface-assembled clusters (at the conditions employed here) are approximately spherical in shape. The structural isomers of the imaged clusters have also been identified, and the distribution of structural types is broadly in agreement with those from size-selected cluster deposition sources. For clusters of approximately 147 atoms, we find a preference for icosahedra over decahedra and truncated octahedra, but at this size there is a high proportion of unidentified/amorphous structures. At around 309 atoms, we find a preference for decahedra over icosahedra and truncated octahedra, but over half the structures remain unidentifiable/amorphous. For sizes above approximately 561 atoms we are able to identify most of the structures, and find decahedra are still the most favoured, although in competition with single-crystal fcc morphologies. The similarity in structure between surface-assembled and size-selected clusters from a cluster source provides evidence of the relevance of size-selected cluster studies to clusters synthesised by other, industrially relevant, methodologies.
In situ heating characterization of structural evolution and size-dependent melting point depression in gold nanoclusters: a comprehensive thermodynamic investigation

Abstract:The investigation of nanocluster behaviors at elevated temperatures is important because it encompasses temperature-dependent structural evolution and size-dependent melting points. Size-selected Au2057±52, Au923±24, Au1846±48, and Au2769±72 clusters were generated using a gas-phase condensation cluster beam source equipped with a lateral time-of-flight mass selector. Comprehensive in situ heating characterization was conducted, revealing the structural evolution and size-dependent melting point depression of AuN clusters at atomic resolution via aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-STEM). Using quantitative (Q)STEM simulations, a comprehensive statistical analysis was conducted to investigate the structural characteristics of the Au clusters. These clusters tended to be kinetically trapped in metastable structures during nucleation, which subsequently served as "growth templates" for the formation of many metastable Au clusters. In situ heating experiments performed on Au2057±52 revealed a structural evolution trend from icosahedron (Ih) to decahedron (Dh) and finally to face-centered cubic (FCC) structures, with noticeable competition being observed between the Dh and FCC structures. AC-STEM imaging revealed that the melting of the Au clusters began with the formation of molten liquid shells on the surface. The liquid shells thickened at higher temperatures, and the solid core suddenly melted when its diameter decreased to a critical size. Furthermore, the melting points of the Au clusters were linearly dependent on the reciprocal diameter. Compared with the theoretical models, it was found that the liquid nucleation and growth model is in good agreement with the experimental results, indicating its suitability for describing the surface core melting processes of Au clusters at the studied scales.

Abstract:Thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters (denoted as Au m (SR) n or Au n L m ) have received extensive attention both experimentally and theoretically. Understanding the growth mode of the Au4 unit in Au m (SR) n is of great significance for experimental synthesis and the search for new gold clusters. In this work, we first build six clusters of Au7(AuCl2)3, Au12(AuCl2)4, Au16(AuCl2)6, Au22(AuCl2)6, and Au30(AuCl2)6 with the Au4 unit as the basic building blocks. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that these newly designed clusters have high structural and electronic stabilities. Based on chemical bonding analysis, the electronic structures of these clusters follow the superatom network (SAN) model. Inspired by the cluster structures, we further predicted an Au4 two-dimensional (2D) monolayer and a three-dimensional (3D) crystal using graphene and diamond as templates, respectively. The computational results demonstrate that the two structures have high dynamic, thermal, and mechanical stabilities, and both structures exhibit metallic properties according to the band structures calculated at the HSE06 level. The chemical bonding analysis by the solid-state natural density partitioning (SSAdNDP) method indicates that they are superatomic crystals assembled by two electron Au4 - superatoms. With this construction strategy, the new bonding pattern and properties of Au n L m are studied and the structure types of gold are enriched.

Abstract:The growth pattern of gold clusters containing up to 300 atoms was studied. The interatomic interaction is modeled by Gupta potential with density-functional-theory-fitted parameters. The stable structures of Au13–300 clusters are obtained by dynamic lattice searching (DLS) and DLS with constructed cores (DLSc) methods. In the optimized structures of Au13–88 clusters, most of clusters adopt the decahedral motifs, except for twelve face-centered cubic (FCC) and stacking fault (SF) FCC motifs. With respect to the wide appearance of the three kinds of motifs, corresponding inner cores are constructed in the DLSc method to optimize Au90–300 clusters with several tens number of atoms. Results show that the major motifs are FCC and SF FCC, except for decahedra at Au110, Au160, Au180, Au190, and Au230. Furthermore, the ratio of SF FCC structures is obviously increasing, it can, thus, be deduced that SF FCC motif is more stable in large size gold clusters.

Abstract:Interface bond structure, in addition to the well-known size and shape quantum confinement effects, is another factor that affects the properties of nanomaterials that is less known and studied. Inspired by the thiol-bridging "staple" motif (RS-Au-SR, Jadzinsky; et al. Science 2007, 318, 430.) discovered from monothiol-stabilized gold nanoclusters, dithiol ligand 2,3-dimercaptopropanesulfonic (DMPS) acid has been employed to synthesize dithiol-protected Au clusters (DTCs). The structure and property of the Au DTCs are studied to probe two effects: the entropy gain of dithiol over monothiol ligand protection and the constraint to the formation of the thiol bridging surface bonding. The hydrodynamic sizes of Au DTCs were estimated by diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The size distribution, Au core plus ligands on solid support, was confirmed by atomic force microscope (AFM) imaging. Size-dependent optical properties were observed. Au(4) clusters at high purity, characterized by mass spectrometry and organic-metal ratio confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), display a characteristic absorbance band at 282 nm. The proton chemical environments as well as Au-S bond information of the Au(4) cluster were fully elucidated by (13)C-(1)H heteronuclear single-quantum coherence (HSQC) in conjunction with other two-dimensional (2D) NMR techniques. The Au-S bonding was further studied in thiol stretching by infrared and Au(4f) and S(2p) electrons by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). One possible structure of the Au(4) cluster has been proposed that needs further theoretical studies or single-crystal confirmation.
