Abstract:Experimental study on micromixing effect on a single-feed semibatch precipitation process in a gas–liquid–liquid mechanically stirred reactor is reported, in which sodium sulfate solution is fed into an agitated barium chloride aqueous solution–air–oil dispersion. The influences of feed addition time, kerosene volume fraction, gas flow rate, impeller speed and surfactant are examined on the product particle size distribution and its morphology. It is revealed that the mean particle size first increases and then decreases as the kerosene volume fraction increases in both liquid–liquid and gas–liquid–liquid systems. The mean particle size generally increases as the gas flow rate increases when feeding near the surface; however, it first increases and then decreases with increasing gas flow rate when feeding near the impeller. Increasing the stirring speed generally decreases the mean particle size with or without a surfactant. The presence of a cationic surfactant decreases the mean particle size, compared ...
