Abstract:The new intermetallics Fe23CB6 have been studied to ascertain the effect of ternary element C on the phase stability and site preference. Fe23CB6 may form with Cr23C6 prototype structure, and the carbons atoms are positioned at 4a sites. The calculated lattice constants are found to agree with report in literatures. We have calculated the magnetic moments of Fe22NiB6, Fe23C6, Fe23B6 and Fe23CB6 compounds. Furthermore, the total and partial phonon densities of states are evaluated first for Fe23C6, Fe23B6 and Fe23CB6. The analysis of the inverted potentials explains qualitatively the contributions of different atoms to the vibrational modes.

Abstract:The phase stability and site preference of T (T=Cr, Mn) in Fe7-xTxC3 have been studied based on the pair potentials obtained by the lattice inversion method. The results show that T (T=Cr, Mn) atoms substitute for Fe with a strong preference for the 6c(1) sites and the order of site preference is 6c(1), 6c(2), and 2b. The calculated lattice parameters and magnetic properties are in good agreement with the experimental data. Moreover, the total and partial phonon densities of states and the phonon dispersion curves are evaluated for the first time for the Fe6TC3 (T=Cr, Mn) compounds with the hexagonal structure. The properties related to lattice vibration, such as the phonon density of states, phonon dispersion curves, specific heat, vibrational entropy, and Debye temperatures are also evaluated.
Formation , structure and magnetism of the g-( Fe , M ) 23 C 6 ( M 1⁄4 Cr , Ni ) phases : A fi rst-principles study

Abstract:The g-(Fe,M)23C6 phases constitute an important class of iron carbides. They occur both as precipitates in steels and iron alloys, thereby increasing their strength, and as common minerals in meteorites and in iron-rich parts of the Earth's mantle. Here we investigate the composition-dependent relative stability of these phases and the role of magnetism therein. The g-(Fe,M)23C6 phases have mineral names isovite (M 1⁄4 Cr) and haxonite (M 1⁄4 Ni), and have a complex crystal structure (116 atoms in the cubic unit cell) in which the metal atoms have a rich variety of atomic coordination numbers, ranging from 12 to 16. Firstprinciples calculations show a narrow formation range for g-(Fe1 xNix)23C6 (x 1⁄4 0e0.043), while the formation range for g-(Fe1 xCrx)23C6 is very broad (x 1⁄4 0e0.85), in good agreement with available experimental data. The present study also shows the importance of magnetism on the formation and stability of these compounds. The conditions of formation and several factors enhancing or hampering the formation of g-(Fe,M)23C6 in man-made steels and in meteorites are discussed. © 2015 Acta Materialia Inc. Abstract:We present an atomistic study on the phase stability, site preference and lattice constants of the rare earth intermetallics Lu2Fe17−xTx (T=Cr, Mn, Ru). The calculated preferential occupation site of ternary element T is found to be the 4f site. The order of site preference is given as 4f, 12k, 12j and 6g for Lu2Fe17−xTx. The calculated lattice parameters are corresponding to the experimental results. We have calculated the magnetic moments of Lu2Fe17−xTx compounds. Results show that the calculated total magnetic moment of Lu2Fe17 compound is M=37.34μB/f.u. In addition, the total and partial phonon densities of states are evaluated first for these complicated structures.

Abstract:The stability of the excellent permanent magnetic compound Nd2Fe14B and substitution of Fe in the compound by V, Cr, Mn, Zr and Nb are investigated by using interatomic pair potentials which are converted from lattice-inversion method. Calculation shows that the substitution always makes the cell volume larger, and the increase of the volume is almost linear with substituent concentration. The calculated cohesive energy shows that the preferential order of substitution of Fe is Nb, V, Cr, Mn, Zr. Nevertheless, all the five substituting elements should most preferentially replace Fe in the j2 site, which has the greatest space among all six Fe sites.

Abstract:The ternary Sm2Fe17-xMnx systems in which Fe is replaced by Mn have been studied to ascertain the effect of substitution on their phase stability, site preference and lattice vibration. Calculation is based on a series of interatomic pair potentials related to the rare earth and transition metals, which are obtained by a strict lattice inversion method. Substitution of Mn for Fe make cohesive energy of Sm2Fe17-xMnx decreased markedly, indicating ternary element Mn can stabilize the Sm2Fe17-xMnx compound. And Mn atom preferentially substitutes for Fe in the 6c site and randomly substitutes in the 18h and 18f site. Besides, the phonon density of states of Sm2Fe15Mn2, the according specific heat, vibrational entropy and Debye temperature are calculated first, and a qualitative analysis with pair potentials is also carried out. Abstract:The first-principles calculations were used to comprehensively assess the structural, electronic, magnetic, and elastic properties of Fe23−xCrxC6 (x = 0–23). The absolute temperature stability follows the sequence of Fe1Cr22C6 (Fe: 4a) > Fe3Cr20C6 (Fe: 4a, 8c) > Fe15Cr8C6 (Fe: 4a, 8c, 48h) > Fe23C6 (Fe: 4a, 8c, 32f, 48h). There is a coexistence of covalent, ionic, and metallic bonds in Fe23C6, Fe15Cr8C6, Fe3Cr20C6, Fe1Cr22C6, and Cr23C6 according to the electronic analysis. In addition, the iron content of 0.4 triggers the magnetic transition, suggesting that a critical point exists between the paramagnetic nature and ferromagnetism. Around the concentration of x = 0.5, the longer nearest neighbor length of Fe–C corresponds to the higher value of magnetic moment. Up to the iron content of 1.0, Fe23C6 carbides give rise to an extraordinary magnetic property. The composition and Wyckoff position collectively determines the mechanical properties. Except for the hardness, the mechanical property improves with increasing chromium concentrations. Furthermore, the compounds Fe23−xCrxC6 (x = 0, 9, 10, 11) are brittle. The present work enriches the pool of information that is necessary for the design and property control of Fe-based materials.

Abstract:Neutron and x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements have been used to investigate the magnetic and structural phase transitions of the spinel system ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{1+x}$${\mathrm{Cr}}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}$${O}_{4}$ ($0.0$ $\ensuremath{\le}$ $x$ $\ensuremath{\le}$ $1.0$). The temperature versus Fe concentration ($x$) phase diagram features two magnetically ordered states and four structural states below 420 K. The complexity of the phase diagram is closely related to the change in the spin and orbital degrees of freedom induced by substitution of Fe ions for Cr ions. The systematic change in the crystal structure is explained by the combined effects of Jahn-Teller distortion, spin-lattice interaction, ${\mathrm{Fe}}^{2+}$${\mathrm{-Fe}}^{3+}$ hopping, and disorder among ${\mathrm{Fe}}^{2+}$, ${\mathrm{Fe}}^{3+}$, and ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{3+}$ ions.

Abstract:The η-M6C, γ-M23C6, and π-M11C2 phases (M=Cr, Mn and Fe) have complex cubic lattices with lattice parameters of approximately 1.0nm. They belong to the CFCC-TmC family (complex face-centered cubic transition metal carbides), display a rich variety of crystal structures, and play in important role in iron alloys and steels. Here we show that first-principles calculations predict high stability for the γ-M23C6 and η-M6C phases, and instability for the π-M11C2 phases, taking into account various compositional and structural possibilities. The calculations also show a wide variety in magnetic properties. The Cr-containing phases were found to be non-magnetic and the Fe-phases to be ferromagnetic, while the Mn-containing phases were found to be either ferrimagnetic or non-magnetic. Details of the local atomic structures, and the formation and stability of these precipitates in alloys are discussed.

Abstract:The phase structure and magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Fe73.5Cu1Nb3-xTixSi13.5B9 (x=0, 1, 2, 3) powders were investigated. The samples were obtained from melt-spun ribbons by high energy ball milling and subsequent annealing at 550 degrees C for 1 h. The result shows that the lattice constant of the precipitated phase in the annealed and Ti-free Fe73.5Cu1Nb3Si13.5B9 powders increases with the elongation of milling time. With the doping of Ti, the annealed Fe73.5Cu1Nb3-xTixSi13.5B9 powders after miling for 60 h keep single alpha-Fe(Si) phase. In addition, with the increase of Ti content, the lattice constant of the precipitated phase decreases, the saturation magnetization increases and the coercivity decreases.

The calculated results show that Fe or Co atoms preferentially substitute M at the 2b sites. The calculated lattice parameters are in good agreement with the experimental data. Abstract:The magnetization of the highly air-stable two-dimensional (2D) intrinsic ferromagnet FeTa3S6 single crystal has been systematically investigated. TaS2 and the intercalated Fe component. Abstract:A comprehensive understanding of the structural characteristics and mechanical behavior of Fe-containing phases is important for high-Fe-level Al-Si alloys. In this paper, the crystal characteristics, thermal stability, thermophysical properties and mechanical behavior of multicomponent α-AlFeMnSi and α-AlFeMnCrSi phases are investigated by experimental studies and first-principles calculations. The results indicate that it is easier for Fe and Cr to substitute the Mn-12j site in α-AlMnSi in thermodynamics; Cr is preferred to Fe for substituting Mn-12j/k sites due to its lower formation enthalpy after single substitutions at Mn atom sites. The α-AlFeMnCrSi phase shows higher thermal stability, modulus and intrinsic hardness and a lower volumetric thermal expansion coefficient at different temperatures due to the strong chemical bonding of Si-Fe and Si-Cr. Moreover, the α-AlFeMnCrSi phase has a higher ideal strength (10.65 GPa) and lower stacking fault energy (1.10 × 103 mJ/m2). The stacking fault energy evolution of the different Fe-containing phases is mainly attributed to the differential charge-density redistribution. The strong chemical bonds of Si-Fe, Si-Mn and Si-Cr are important factors affecting the thermophysical and mechanical behaviors of the α-AlFeMnCrSi phase.

Abstract:In this article, the transformation laws of microstructural formation, phase evolution, electrothermal and magnetic properties in as-cast and annealed CrFeNiTi (x) compositionally complex alloys have been systematically investigated. The result showed that annealed CrFeNiTi (x) alloys consisted of the [Fe, Cr] solid solution (BCC), CrFeNi solid solution (FCC) and rich-(Ni, Ti) intermetallic compound (HCP). Transmission electron microscope indicated that the rich-(Ni, Ti) intermetallic nanoparticles, which were distributed on the disordered BCC [Fe, Cr] solid solution of CrFeNiTi0.4 alloy matrix, grew and transformed. For CrFeNiTi (x) alloys, the electrical resistivity increased with Ti addition and increase of thermal conductivity was presented with decreasing Ti content. In addition, annealed treatment could decrease electrical resistivity but increased thermal conductivity of as-cast alloys. Moreover, the CrFeNiTi (x) alloys exhibited typical soft-magnetic characteristic indicated by low coercivity. The saturation magnetization of as-cast and annealed CrFeNiTi (x) alloys rose at the beginning, then reduced with the addition of Ti content. It suggested that CrFeNiTi (x) alloys with major solid solutions showed the better soft-magnetic properties than those with major intermetallic compound, which is influenced by the crystal structure, phase boundaries and defects.

Abstract:The structure and magnetic properties of the PrFe10.5 + 0.5xV1.5(1 - X)Tix alloys with x = 0-1 and their nitrides have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermometric analysis (DTA) and magnetic measurement. The phase formation diagram of the PrFe10.5 + 0.5xV1.5(1 -x)Tix alloys has been constructed as a function of Ti content x and homogenization temperature. It was found that PrFe11Ti compound with ThMn12 structure is only stable in a narrow temperature range 1303-1383 K, and that the ThMn12 structure phase will be synthesized at lower temperature and a wider temperature range by substitution of V for Ti, while the compound with ThMn12 structure does not form in the PrFe10.5V1.5 alloy. For PrFe10.5 + 0.5xV1.5(1 - x)Tix alloys with x = 0.1-1 the Curie temperature Tc increases with decreasing Ti concentration. The PrFe10.5 + 0.5xV1.5(1 - X)TixNδ5 nitrides with x = 0.25-1 have a Tc of about 730-788 K, Ba larger than 8 T and σs of about 145 emu/g. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The microstructure and coercivity of NdxFe93-xB7 (x=16-28) sintered magnets were systematically studied. A new stable ferromagnetic phase with a composition of NdFe2Ox (x almost-equal-to 0.3) and a Curie temperature of 145-degrees-C is found in the intergranular regions of the magnets, owing to the introduction of oxygen in the magnet processing. It forms at approximately 650-degrees-C and its volume fraction reaches a maximum of approximately 4% in the Nd22Fe71B7 magnets. The coercivity is considerably enhanced by the appearance of this new phase.

Abstract:CoFe2−xMnxO4 (x=0–2.0) nanocrystalline thin films and powders were prepared by a sol–gel process. The crystal structures and magnetic properties of the as-synthesized products were identified by an X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and an alternating gradient magnetometer (AGM), respectively. XRD analysis reveals that CoFe2−xMnxO4 nanocrystalline films and powders occurred during a cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition when x=1.5 and 1.3, respectively. The substitution of Mn3+ for Fe3+ causes the migration of Co2+ from A to B sites, and finally lead to the phase transition. AGM investigations indicate that MS, TC and HC values decrease with increasing Mn content x. The decrease of MS and TC is related to the weakly magnetic property of Mn3+; whereas, the decrease of HC is ascribed to the content decrease of Co2+ on the B sites. The large HC around the phase transformation point is induced by a structural stress originated from the metastable cubic structure.

The calculated results show that substituting either Cr, Ti, V, Nb or Fe atoms makes the crystal cohesive energy of Sm(Co,M)12 decrease markedly, proving that these atoms can stabilize Sm(Co,M)12 with ThMn12 structure. The calculated lattice constants coincide quite well with the experimental data. The order of site preference of these ternary elements T is 8i, 8j and 8f with the occupation of 8i corresponding to the greatest energy decreases. The properties related to lattice vibration, such as the phonon densities of states, specific heat and vibrational entropy, are also evaluated.

Abstract:The site preference of Fe in Cr23−xFexC6 is investigated based on the interatomic potentials obtained by the lattice inversion method. The calculated results show that Fe atoms preferentially substitute for Cr at 4a sites first and then 8c sites. The structural parameters of Cr23−xFexC6 with content x are calculated and the results are consistent with experimental results. The calculated cohesive energies indicate that the increase in x value is accompanied by the decrease in the stability of Cr23−xFexC6. The thermodynamic properties of Cr23C6, such as the phonon density of states and vibrational entropy, as well as the bulk modulus of Cr23−xFexC6 are evaluated. The calculated results are in good agreement with experimental results. This work provides a simple and promising method for studying the properties of carbides with complex structures.
