Abstract:We performed first-principles calculations for the pressure-induced martensitic phase transition from the ground state ferromagnetic body-center cubic (bcc) phase to a nonmagnetic hexagonal close-packed (hcp) phase of Fe under uniaxial strain along the ［001］ direction of bcc phase based on density-functional theory, employing the pseudopotentional and plane-wave method. The calculated results show that the transition path under unixial strain is significantly different from that under hydrostatic pressure. A sudden drop of the magnetic moment is observed at a critical point on the transition path, which results in a discontinuous derivative in the total energy and volume curve. This is a feature of a magnetic first-order phase transition, which indicates that magnetism is the primary stabilizing mechanism of the bcc structure. The enthalpy barrier for bcc-to-hcp transformation decreases as the uniaxial strain (the pressure) increases. The physical origin of the influence of uniaxial strain on the phase transition is discussed.
Magnetic ordering phase transition and abnormal brittleness in dilute Fe-Mn solid solution

Abstract:Experiments showed that solute Mn in bcc iron is in antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling with iron neighbours below 2 at.% Mn, but is in ferromagnetic (FM) coupling at higher concentrations. Surprisingly, although Mn is an important alloying element in high-strength steels, it induces brittleness just at around 2 at.% Mn and higher concentrations. However, the mechanisms for the magnetic ordering phase transition and the abnormal brittleness remain unclear. Based on magnetism-constrained/unconstrained calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations within density functional theory, we show that while the AFM phase prevails at low Mn contents, the FM phase becomes dominant at 1.85 at.% Mn and elevated temperatures. Our results suggest that the AFM-FM phase transition with increasing Mn concentration can be ascribed to the thermal effect. Furthermore, we find that the brittleness of the Fe-Mn alloys at intermediate Mn content might be related to the stress variations within the grains accompanying the local magnetic ordering changes.

Abstract:The crystal structures, martensitic structural transitions and magnetic properties of MnCo1-xFexSi (0 <= x <= 0.50) alloys were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurements. In high-temperature paramagnetic state, the alloys undergo a martensitic structural transitions from the Ni2In-type hexagonal parent phase to the TiNiSi-type orthorhombic martensite. Both the martensitic transition temperature (TM) and Curie temperatures of martensite (T_C^M) decrease with increasing Fe content. The introduced Fe atoms establish ferromagnetic (FM) coupling between Fe-Mn atoms and destroy the double spiral antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling in MnCoSi compound, resulting in a magnetic change in the martensite phase from a spiral AFM state to a FM state. For the alloys with x = 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20, a metamagnetic transition was observed in between the two magnetic states. A magnetostructural phase diagram of MnCo1-xFexSi (0 <= x <= 0.50) alloys was proposed.

Abstract:The Sm2(Fe1−xMnx)14B (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) rare earth alloy was prepared by a reduction-diffusion method, and a corresponding reduction-diffusion model was established. The crystal structure, microscopic morphology, and magnetic properties were systematically characterized to investigate the effect of Mn doping. The results show that the diffusion of Sm into FeB proceeded with the formation of the Sm2Fe14B phase from the very beginning of the reaction. Sm2(Fe1−xMnx)14B alloy undergoes a transition from the ferromagnetic phase (x = 0) to the paramagnetic phase (x = 0.2), and the average magnetic moment of Fe decreases from 2.066 to 0.719 μB as observed by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. In addition, the Curie temperature decreases rapidly from 620 to 230 K. In other words, a wide temperature-regulation of TC can be achieved by adjusting the Mn content, which is attributed to the fact that Mn doping greatly weakens the atomic exchange interactions. These results provide value for potential applications of Re–Fe-based alloys in room temperature magnetic refrigeration.

Abstract:We report thickness dependent inhomogeneous antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) phase transitions in ultrathin $\mathrm{L}{\mathrm{a}}_{0.7}\mathrm{S}{\mathrm{r}}_{0.3}\mathrm{Mn}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ (LSMO) films grown on the $\mathrm{SrTi}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ substrate. When the films are 4--7 unit cells (UCs) thick, FM domains appear as isolated nanodisks in the AFM matrix that together floats on top of the three AFM base UCs, leading a superparamagnetic blocking behavior. Our first principles calculations unravel the rather counterintuitive physical origin of this mixed phase state; the formation of FM/AFM domain boundaries is energetically favorable. At 8 UCs, an abrupt shear strain relief occurs in the LSMO thin film and twinning patterns with two unit cell periodicity form along the [010] and [100] directions. Our studies reveal the complexity of the magnetic phase transition at the nanometer scale and open a door for the development of quantum devices and statistical theories.
Effect of Fe doping on the phase transitions,magnetocaloric effect and exchange bias in Mn50 Ni41-x Fex Sn9 alloys

Abstract:Mn50 Ni41-x FexSn9 (x=0,2,4)alloys were prepared by arc melting method.Their crystal structure, phase transitions,magnetocaloric effect,and exchange bias were investigated by X-ray diffraction,physical prop-erty measurement system,and vibrating sample magnetometer.The results show that with the increase of Fe content,the martensitic transformation temperature decreases gradually,while Curie temperature of the marten-sitic phase increases.The addition of Fe leads to the increase in the magnetization change across the martensitic transformation,which gives rise to relatively large magnetocaloric effect.Furthermore,the exchange bias field decreases with the increasing of Fe concentration,which is ascribed to the fact that Fe addition can enhance the ferromagnetic interaction in Mn50 Ni41-x Fex Sn9 alloys.

Abstract:CoFe2−xMnxO4 (x=0–2.0) nanocrystalline thin films and powders were prepared by a sol–gel process. The crystal structures and magnetic properties of the as-synthesized products were identified by an X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and an alternating gradient magnetometer (AGM), respectively. XRD analysis reveals that CoFe2−xMnxO4 nanocrystalline films and powders occurred during a cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition when x=1.5 and 1.3, respectively. The substitution of Mn3+ for Fe3+ causes the migration of Co2+ from A to B sites, and finally lead to the phase transition. AGM investigations indicate that MS, TC and HC values decrease with increasing Mn content x. The decrease of MS and TC is related to the weakly magnetic property of Mn3+; whereas, the decrease of HC is ascribed to the content decrease of Co2+ on the B sites. The large HC around the phase transformation point is induced by a structural stress originated from the metastable cubic structure.

Abstract:The rich phase diagram of rhombohedral (R)-like and tetragonal (T)-like monoclinic polymorph in strained BiFeO3 (BFO) films brings on various functionalities. Finding correlations of physical ordering parameters in this system is generally difficult because T-like and R-like phases are undistinguishable in many aspects. In this study, the magnetic-coupled structural transitions of the mixed-phase BFO at low temperatures were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy. To resolve the complexity resulted from the similarity between T-like and R-like phases, we analyzed the Raman spectra on a micro-scale region with various T/R ratios, which is in situ manipulated by an AFM tip carrying a dc bias. Phonons of T-like and R-like phases were thus successfully separated. Based on temperature-dependent XRD and resolved Raman spectra, we observed two isostructural transitions at around 225 K and 150 K, and they are strongly correlated with the magnetic ordering in the mixed-phase BFO film. Moreover, through the effective spin-lattice coupling, the evolution of the T/R polymorph is changed by the magnetic cooling process at low temperatures. This study provides a pathway to modulate phonon behaviors by magnetic fields in a highly strained system.
Emergent Magnetic Phases and Piezomagnetic Effects in Mn$_x$Ni$_{1-x}$F$_2$ Thin Film Alloys

Abstract:The effect of random competing single-ion anisotropies in antiferromagnets was studied using epitaxial Mn$_x$Ni$_{1-x}$F$_2$ antiferromagnetic thin film alloys grown via molecular beam epitaxy. The crystal structure of this material is tetragonal for all values of $x$, and the Mn sites have a magnetic easy axis single-ion anisotropy while the Ni sites have an easy plane anisotropy perpendicular to the Mn easy axis. Crystallographic and magnetization measurements demonstrated that the thin film alloys were homogeneously mixed and did not phase-separate into their constituent parts. Pure MnF$_2$ thin films epitaxially grown on MgF$_2$ exhibited compressive strain along all three crystallographic axes which resulted in piezomagnetic effects. The piezomagnetism disappeared if the film was grown on a (MnNi)F$_2$ graded buffer layer. A mean-field theory fit to the transition temperature as a function of the Mn concentration $x$, which takes into account piezomagnetic effects, gave a magnetic exchange constant between Mn and Ni ions of $J_{\text{MnNi}} = 0.305 \pm 0.003$~meV. Mean-field theory calculations also predicted the existence of an oblique antiferromagnetic phase in the Mn$_x$Ni$_{1-x}$F$_2$ alloy which agreed with the experimental data. A magnetic phase diagram for Mn$_x$Ni$_{1-x}$F$_2$ thin film alloys was constructed and showed evidence for the existence of two unique magnetic phases, in addition to the ordinary antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases: an oblique antiferromagnetic phase, and an emergent magnetic phase proposed to be either a magnetic glassy phase or a helical phase. The phase diagram is quantitatively different from that of Fe$_x$Ni$_{1-x}$F$_2$ because of the much larger single-ion anisotropy of Fe$^{2+}$ compared to Mn$^{2+}$.

Abstract:Aiming at clarifying the structures and magnetic anisotropies of kagome Mn3−xFexSn crystal over the wide range of x, we theoretically investigate the x-dependence of lattice parameters and bond lengths of their six magnetic phases by the first-principles calculations, and discuss their stabilities. Under the virtual crystal approximation at the Mn/Fe sites with a composition increment of Δx = 0.25, we find the following points. First, the lattice parameters and intra-plane first-neighbor bond lengths highly depend on the magnetic structures. Second, at x ≤ 0.25, the in-plane noncollinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase is most stable. Third, at x = 0.50, magnetic structures such as the out-of-plane spin canting structure, which are like superpositions of the AFM and ferromagnetic phases, are stable, and the magnetization easy axis is the c-axis. Finally, at x ≥ 1.00, the in-plane ferromagnetic phase is most stable, indicating that the easy axis is in the ab-plane, and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy reaches −1.60 MJ m−3 at x = 3.00.

Abstract:The crystal structure and magnetoresponsive properties of Fe-doped MnCoGe alloys have been investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurements. By alloying the Fe-containing isostructure compounds into MnCoGe, a magnetostructural transition from paramagnetic austenite to ferromagnetic martensite with large magnetization difference can be realized in a temperature window between the Curie temperatures of the austenite and martensite, resulting in magnetic-field-induced martensitic transformations and large magnetic-entropy changes. A structural and magnetic phase diagram of Fe-doped MnCoGe alloys has been proposed.

Abstract:With fcc iron as an example, it is shown that a set of effective exchange integrals, obtained simply by fitting to the total energy of frozen collinear magnon states within the local spin-density approximation, reproduces the energy dispersion of the spiral spin-density wave in remarkable agreement with previous direct theoretical calculations. Monte Carlo simulation is used in the search of the ground spin configuration and in the study of the spin orientational fluctuation behaviors at finite temperature. The Neel temperature thus obtained for antiferromagnetic fee Fe and Mn is in reasonable agreement with the experimental measurement. [S0163-1829(99)06813-7].

Abstract:We have studied the crystal and magnetic structures of Fe-doped hexagonal manganites LuMn1-xFexO3 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) by using bulk magnetization and neutron powder diffraction methods. The samples crystalize consistently in a hexagonal structure and maintain the space group P63cm from 2 to 300 K. The N\'eel temperature TN increases continuously with increasing Fe-doping. In contrast to a single {\Gamma}4 representation in LuMnO3, the magnetic ground state of the Fe-doped samples can only be described with a spin configuration described by a mixture of {\Gamma}3 (P63'cm') and {\Gamma}4 (P63'c'm) representations, whose contributions have been quantitatively estimated. The drastic effect of Fe-doping is highlighted by composition-dependent spin reorientations. A phase diagram of the entire composition series is proposed based on the present results and those reported in literature. Our result demonstrates the importance of tailoring compositions in increasing magnetic transition temperatures of multiferroic systems.
Stability and structures of the CFCC-TmC phases: A first-principles study

Abstract:The η-M6C, γ-M23C6, and π-M11C2 phases (M=Cr, Mn and Fe) have complex cubic lattices with lattice parameters of approximately 1.0nm. They belong to the CFCC-TmC family (complex face-centered cubic transition metal carbides), display a rich variety of crystal structures, and play in important role in iron alloys and steels. Here we show that first-principles calculations predict high stability for the γ-M23C6 and η-M6C phases, and instability for the π-M11C2 phases, taking into account various compositional and structural possibilities. The calculations also show a wide variety in magnetic properties. The Cr-containing phases were found to be non-magnetic and the Fe-phases to be ferromagnetic, while the Mn-containing phases were found to be either ferrimagnetic or non-magnetic. Details of the local atomic structures, and the formation and stability of these precipitates in alloys are discussed.

Abstract:The investigation of the magnetic and structural characteristic of Mn 50-x Fe x Rh 50 alloy is of physical importance due to the phase transition behavior. In this study, a series of highly ordered epitaxial films with varying Fe concentrations are grown on MgO (001) substrate. At low Fe concentrations (x=0, 2, 6), a separation between the structural phase transition and magnetic phase transition is observed. Different with the structural phase transition, the temperature-dependent magnetization presents a quite large temperature hysteresis behavior. In addition, the structural transition induces further tetragonal distortion and forms intermediate phase between B2 and L1 0 structure. This separated magnetic and structural phase transition has been further validated through XRD, anisotropic magnetoresistance and spin pumping measurements. Moreover, with the further increase in the Fe concentration, the Mn 50-x Fe x Rh 50 films shows ferromagnetic behaviors due to the competitive magnetic exchange interaction, while the structural phase transition is suppressed.

Abstract:A series of Ni50-xMn41+xSn9 (x = 0–19) alloys from Ni-rich to Mn-rich composition were prepared, and the composition dependence of phase transitions and magnetic properties were investigated. No γ-phase can be observed until x = 17. Martensitic transformation from ferromagnetic austenite to weak-magnetic or ferromagnetic martensite was observed in alloys with Mn content between 52 and 58, and magnetic-field-induced transformation was confirmed. A large magnetization change of 44 Am2/kg across the martensitic transformation is observed in Ni37Mn54Sn9. Our results indicate that Mn-rich Ni-Mn-Sn alloys show promise as metamagnetic shape memory alloys.

Abstract:The crystal structure and magnetic properties of AlFe2-xMnxB2 (x = 0-0.5) compounds were investigated. With increasing Mn content, the magnetic properties of these compounds evolve gradually and the lattice parameters change continuously: Curie temperature (T-c) decreases from 312 K (x = 0) to 220 K (x = 0.5) and a new phase transition from the ferromagnetic state (FM) to spin-glass state (SPG) appears upon cooling. The lattice shrinks in the ab plane while it expands in the c direction. The formation of re-entrant SPG around 50 K was studied via temperature dependent ac and dc magnetization as well as the initial magnetization curves in 5 K. The reason for this glass state is the triangular configuration of magnetic atoms and the antiferromagnetic interactions introduced by Mn substitutions. The Curie transition leads to a conventional magnetocaloric effect (MCE). The Mn doping leads to a decrease in the MCE near room temperature, but there is a plane in entropy change (Delta S) for the x = 0.1 compound under low field which makes these compounds good candidates to produce composites used for magnetic refrigeration application in a wide temperature span.

Abstract:We report a unique temperature-induced insulator-metal transition in MnB4 that is accompanied by a simultaneous magnetostructural change from a nonmagnetic monoclinic mP20 phase to a magnetic orthorhombic oP10 phase. Such a concurring magnetostructural and insulator-metal transformation is a manifestation of a strong competition between Peierls and Stoner mechanisms that governs a crossover from an electron-pairing to an electron-localization scenario in this system. Therefore, the phase stability of MnB4 is controlled by a subtle interplay among the Peierls mechanism, Stoner mechanism, and phonon free energy. Our findings not only resolve the longstanding magnetostructural puzzle of MnB4 but also provide a realistic system for the Peierls-Hubbard model.
