Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:A novel method for the regio- and stereoselective synthesis of substituted 3-coumaranones from salicylaldehydes and allenes using a rhodium(III) catalyst has been developed. This procedure gives access to new 2-vinyl-substituted 3-coumaranone compounds. The method involves a Rh(III)-catalyzed aldehyde C-H activation and annulation reactions. Moreover, this Rh(III)-catalyzed [4 + 1] annulation reaction has been applied to 2-aminobenzaldehydes to afford 2,2-disubstituted 3-indolinones.

Abstract:We have developed an efficient annulation of benzamides with allenes using cobalt and photoredox dual catalysis under an oxygen atmosphere. This reaction provides a mild and environmentally friendly method for the construction of isoquinolinone scaffolds in good to excellent yields, demonstrating broad substrate scopes, high regioselectivity, and good functional group compatibility. Notably, the transformation features an alternative strategy for the regeneration of a cobalt catalyst with the aid of Eosin Y. Preliminary mechanistic studies reveal that a radical-mediated cascade annulation is involved in this reaction.

Abstract:An oxyacetamide-directed Rh(III)-catalyzed Z-type alkenyl C–H functionalization through a rare exo-rhodacyle intermediate is described, forming multisubstituted dienes and allenes. A variety of alkenes and propargylic carbonate coupling partners are suitable for this transformation with high regio- and stereoselectivity. Abstract:Alkynylcyclopropanes have been used for the first time as coupling partners in transition-metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization. Specifically, a Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed regioselective annulation of alkynylcyclopropanes with N-aryloxyamides via redox-neutral C-H/C-C activation has been developed, which affords highly functionalized 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans bearing an (E)-exocyclic carbon-carbon double bond and a tetra-substituted carbon center in moderate to good yields with a broad substrate scope.

Abstract:With the help of DFT calculations, the reaction mechanisms of the rhodium(III)-catalyzed C-H activation/annulation between aromatic amide and α-allenol leading to the formation of isoindolinone have been theoretically investigated. Our calculated results show that the catalytic cycle consists of four stages: N-H deprotonation and C-H activation (Stage I), allene insertion, rearrangement and isomerization (Stage II), β-H elimination and enol-keto tautomerism (Stage III), and catalyst regeneration resulting in the five-membered ring product (Stage IV). For stage IV, besides the reaction paths proposed by the experimentalists, i.e., the insertion and reductive elimination (labeled as path a) and the reductive elimination and hydroamination (labeled as path b), an alternative path which involves C-N and C-H reductive eliminations (labeled as path c) was proposed and examined. The computational results show that the newly established path c is more energetically favorable than the reaction paths proposed by the experimentalists (paths a and b). The allene (non-terminal double bond) insertion step contributes to the rate-determining step with an overall activation free energy of 24.6 kcal/mol. Our study is beneficial for a better comprehension of the reaction mechanisms and provides a significant suggestion for further development of similar reactions.

Abstract:Efficient Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation of different classes of (hetero)-arenes such as 2-phenylpyridine, indoles, aryl ketones and acetanilide and their dehydrogenative cross-coupling with allylic alcohols are described. Abstract:Alkynyloxiranes have been employed for the first time as effective coupling partners in Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed C-H functionalization reactions. Their annulation with N-aryloxyamides then offers a redox-neutral and efficient synthesis of functionalized 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans bearing an exocyclic E-allylic alcohol and a tetrasubstituted carbon center in good yields with a broad substrate scope. The products can be easily converted to molecules with more complexity, which provides an opportunity for rapid assembly of structurally diverse heterocycles.
