Abstract:Phase transitions of both α-BiNbO4 and β-BiNbO4 were investigated under high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) (0–5GPa and 300–1800°C, respectively) using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscope (EDS). The stable regimes for the BiNbO4 phases were also determined. Experiments showed that both α-BiNbO4 and β-BiNbO4 could convert to a new high pressure phase HP-BiNbO4 above 3GPa, and the transition temperatures decreased with increasing pressures. Below 3GPa, β-BiNbO4 keeps stable up to 1800°C, while α-BiNbO4 converts to β-BiNbO4 when temperature is higher than 1150°C. By heating the metastable HP-BiNbO4 phase at room pressure, HP-BiNbO4 converts to α-BiNbO4 at 600°C. Above 1150°C, HP-BiNbO4 would transform to β-BiNbO4. Phase relationships of Bi2O3, Nb2O5, α-BiNbO4, β-BiNbO4 and HP-BiNbO4 were also summarized.

Abstract:BiNbO4 has stirred up great deal of interest due to its excellent photocatalytic activities. Besides, it possesses rich polymorphism. Here, the structure stability and structural evolution of orthorhombic α- and triclinic β-BiNbO4 were investigated via in-situ X-ray diffraction and Raman spectrum up to 46.7 GPa. Upon compression, both BiNbO4 samples become unstable. α-BiNbO4 transformed to the monoclinic C2/c structure at 10.3 GPa, while β-BiNbO4 possessed one P-to-P1 isostructural phase transition around 12.7 GPa, which is the first time to identify the crystal structure of each high pressure phase. Both high pressure structures remained stable without obvious symmetry changes during compression to 46.7 GPa. In addition, both phase transitions were reversible upon decompression. These results proved insight to understand pressure-induced reversible phase transition for ABO4 compounds with polymorphism.

Abstract:The Raman and synchrotron angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction studies have been performed on NaBi(WO4)2 under high pressure up to 30.7 and 36.2GPa, respectively, at room temperature. With pressure increases to ∼7.0GPa, the structure of NaBi(WO4)2 begins to transform from tetragonal (I41/a) into monoclinic (P2/m), and the phase transition completes around 13GPa. With pressure higher than 29.0GPa, the NaBi(WO4)2 turns into amorphous state. The random arrangement of Na+ and Bi3+ in short-range ordered scheelite NaBi(WO4)2 results in the tetragonal to monoclinic phase transition, which is different from that observed in AWO4 tungstates and AMoO4 molybdates (A=Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb, Eu, Cd).

Abstract:NaNbO3 (NN) is a well-known perovskite-type dielectric material. However, its phase transition is a complex process and the phase transition mechanism is insufficiently investigated yet. Therefore, in the work, the NN superfine particles were synthesized by a hydrothermal method with the assistance of K+ and the microstructures of NN were carefully investigated to understand the strain-driven phase transition and morphology evolution of NN. The results suggest that K+ leads to strong planar bending of NbO6 by influencing the Na + vibration, which accounts for the O-R phase transition as the K+ increases. Once the R phase is triggered, the O-R phase transition proceeds spontaneously based on phonon calculations of orthorhombic (O) NN and R NN. The antiferroelectric nature of rhombohedral (R) NN with the space group R–3H is confirmed through charge density distribution. Additionally, the morphology evolution is deduced on the TEM analysis basis.

Abstract:The stability and phase transformations of the four BiB3O6 polymorphs, i.e., α-, β-, γ- and δ-BiB3O6, were investigated under different temperatures and pressures. β-BiB3O6 is a metastable phase which can only be obtained by boric acid flux method in a sealed system at low temperature. The other polymorphs, α-, γ- and δ-BiB3O6, are thermodynamic stable phases. Owing to the large kinetic effect, the phase transformations of the BiB3O6 polymorphs are generally slow, thus an extensive annealing process was used in this study. The study shows that α-BiB3O6 is the high-temperature phase and its stable area is narrow (710–715 °C) in atmospheric conditions, while γ-BiB3O6 is a stable phase in the intermediate temperature range (∼680–710 °C). The results also confirm that δ-BiB3O6 is a high-pressure phase and all other polymorphs may transfer to δ-phase under high pressure. However, the δ-phase can be obtained by annealing α- or β-BiB3O6 at relatively low temperature under ambient pressure. Therefore, δ-BiB3O6 can also be regarded as the low-temperature phase in this system. Based on the experimental results, as well as the thermodynamic principles, a pressure–temperature (P–T) phase diagram for the BiB3O6 system is proposed.

Abstract:A single-phase Bi0.91La0.05Tb0.04FeO3 polycrystalline ceramic was fabricated by spark-plasma-sintering the precursor powder prepared by a sol-gel method. Temperature-dependent properties of polycrystalline Bi0.91La0.05Tb0.04FeO3 were characterized by x-ray diffraction, dielectric, and piezoelectric measurement. The x-ray diffraction results revealed a phase transition near 700 °C. Especially, temperature-dependent dielectric behavior demonstrated that there was a dielectric abnormal peak at about 697 °C, in addition to those two well-known dielectric abnormal peaks at 337 °C (Néel temperature) and 831 °C (Curie temperature). The observations, together with thermal depoled behavior, suggest a ferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transition from R3c to Pbnm at around 700 °C.

Abstract:For NaNbO3, its intrinsic phase transition sequence is still controversial in literature. In this paper, high-densified NaNbO3 ceramics derived from mechanochemical nanostructures presented a stabilized antiferroelectric characteristic. In addition to the Tc of 360 °C, another diffuse dielectric anomaly appeared around 100 °C, which did not vanish after O2 annealing treatment. The fine structure analysis indicated that this dielectric anomaly belongs to first order phase transition from P phase to Q phase. Moreover, even exerting the strong electric field close to breakdown value, the normal ferroelectric loops cannot be induced, proving the large free energy difference between these two phases.

Structural Transition of Mnnb2o6 under Quasi-Hydrostatic Pressure

Abstract:High-pressure Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction studies on manganese niobate (MnNb2O6) have been carried out in a diamond anvil cell at room temperature up to 41 GPa. A pressure-induced phase transition was observed at 12 GPa accompanied by the softening of two internal vibration modes v(10)(B-2g) and v(8)(A(g)). Disappearing of most Raman vibration peaks under high pressure reveals that the NbO6 octahedra distort heavily through the transition; this is evidenced by the X-ray diffraction results, but the octahedral units still exist, as the internal Nb-O strengthening vibration is observable even at the highest pressure in this study. The equation of state for MnNb2O6 in low pressure phase I was obtained with third-order Birch-Murnaghan method, yielding a zero-pressure bulk modulus B-0 and its pressure derivative B-0' of 154.4 +/- 3.5 GPa and 4.1, respectively. The volume dependencies of the optical lattice mode frequencies and their respective Griineisen parameters were extracted; it is suggested that the instability of the columbite orthorhombic structure at high pressure is related to the strong deformation of the NbO6 octahedra. Decompression measurements suggest that the pressure-induced transformation is partly reversible.

Abstract:A detailed investigation using variable temperature powder neutron diffraction demonstrates that BiFeO3 undergoes a phase transition from the ferroelectric alpha phase (rhombohedral, R3c) to a paraelectric beta phase (orthorhombic, Pbnm) between 820 oC and 830 oC. Co-existence of both phases over a finite temperature interval, together with abrupt changes in key structural parameters, confirm that the transition is firstorder. The beta phase corresponds to the GdFeO3-type perovskite. The metastability of BiFeO3 relative to Bi2Fe4O9 above 810 oC precludes observation of a reported cubic gamma phase above 925 oC under the present experimental conditions.

Abstract:The phase transition of BiFeO3 (BFO) from tetragonal to monoclinic induced by pressure was investigated by first-principles method. The sequential monoclinic phase, Ma, which is favorable during low compression with respect to the tetragonal phase, was characterized. The order parameters were calculated in the vicinity of the phase transition, showing that phase transition has a second-order character. The results demonstrated that the pressure-induced tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transition in BFO is related to the softening behavior of the E mode, which are very helpful in further investigations of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in lead-free materials.

Abstract:Single-phase bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) powders were synthesized with a hydrothermal method by controlling the experimental conditions carefully. The powder structure, morphology and composition were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope, Raman measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The particles change from irregular agglomerations to regular cubes with increasing KOH concentration. The large BiFeO3 cubic particles enjoy much smooth surfaces with well-matched element ratio (Bi:Fe:O=1:1:3) and chemical valence (Bi3+, Fe3+ and O2−). The high temperature XRD and differential scanning calorimetry show that BiFeO3 powders have a hexagonal perovskite structure with a space group R3c below 370°C and a rhombohedral structure with a space group R3m below 755°C. BiFeO3 undergoes a phase transition in the temperature range of 755–817°C from rhombohedral structure to a cubic phase, then decomposes to liquid and Fe2O3 above 939°C.

Abstract:Nanopowders of Bi2Ti2O7 with various Na+ modifications were synthesized by chemical coprecipitation, and their phase structures transform into a solid solution of Bi4Ti3O12 and Bi2Ti4O11 after sintering at high temperature. The dielectric peak at around 517 °C in Bi4Ti3O12 is related to the domain transformation at 445 °C in Bi2Ti2O7 and at 468 °C in Bi2Ti4O11 and moves to a higher temperature with increasing Bi2Ti4O11 concentration in the solid solution. Consequently, a dramatic drop of dielectric value in the solid solution was observed under a direct current bias due to the loss of relaxation mechanisms originated from the defect dipole orientation as well as oxygen vacancy migration. Furthermore, E-field dependent resistive measurements in Bi2Ti4O11 ceramics at various temperatures assert the defect dipole rotation and oxygen vacancy migration in combination with macrodomain alignment inside grains. Especially around phase transition, the field-induced phase switching leads to the abnormal jump of resistivity. Finally, the P–E hysteresis loop measurements show a good ferroelectricity in the solid solution.
Phase transitions in KNbO3: symmetry analysis and first principles calculations

Abstract:Group theoretical aspects of the three temperature-dependent and temperature-reversible experimentally observed phase transitions in the KNbO3 crystal (cubic-tetragonal, tetragonal-orthorhombic, orthorhombic-rhombohedral) in the framework of the group-subgroup relationship tree have been discussed. The ab initio DFT-HSE06 LCAO calculations of the electron and phonon properties, with optimisation of lattice parameters and atomic coordinates for all experimentally observed KNbO3 phases, are used for better understanding of the details of these phase transitions. Good agreement with the experimental data was found for the structural properties. Ab initio calculations of the phonon dispersion curves confirmed the existence of a stable phase only for the rhombohedral structure found experimentally for the lowest temperature of 263 K. For the remaining three higher temperature phases, imaginary frequencies appear, implying a nonstability of these phases. The only the cubic-tetragonal phase transition has been found to be symmetry allowed. The tetragonal-orthorhombic and orthorhombic-rhombohedral phases are not related to the group-subgroup relationship. An explanation is proposed based also on the results of ab initio calculations of the structure of the monoclinic phase, which we have chosen as a virtual one for the tetragonal-orthorhombic transition in the bulk.

Abstract:As one of important semiconductor photocatalysts, bismuth oxide chloride (BiOCl) crystallizes into a tetragonal matlockite structure with the space group of P4/nmm. In this work, the in situ high-pressure angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction experiments and the first-principle calculations were performed on BiOCl, in order to explore the crystal and electronic structure evolution processes upon compression. At 15.1 GPa, BiOCl undergoes a tetragonal to tetragonal isostructural phase transition and then completely transforms into a high-pressure tetragonal phase at 22.1 GPa, which adopts the same crystal structure as that of the low-pressure tetragonal phase. According to the ab initio calculation results, the redistribution of Bader charge between the Bi, O, Cl ions under high pressure induces the isostructural phase transition in BiOCl and causes the different electronic structures between the high-pressure and low-pressure phases. Abstract:Low-temperature Raman spectra of Bi4Ti3O12 nanocrystals with grain size 25~75 nm were measured at temperature-190 ℃.The experimental results show that there are two size-driven phase transition.One is the subtle transformation from monoclinic to orthorhombic structure,and another one is the transformation from ferroelectric orthorhombic to paraelectric tetragonal structure.

Abstract:Temperature dependence of phase composition and phase transition in the BaTiO3 nanotube arrays were examined by x-ray diffraction and Raman analyses. The BaTiO3 nanotube arrays exhibited a distinct phase transition behavior from -190 to 300 degrees C. Tetragonal phase was found to coexist with cubic phase in the BaTiO3 nanotube arrays above Curie temperature. The inner stress as well as size effect in the BaTiO3 nanotube arrays is responsible for the diffuse ferroelectric phase transition and the formation of multiphases coexistence at high temperature. Abstract:(1−x)BiScO3−xPbTiO3 (BS-PT) nanopowders with composition from x = 0.5 to x = 1.0 (pure PbTiO3 can be regarded as x = 1.0) were prepared. The phase and Raman spectra of nanopowders with different compositions are analysized. The peaks of A1(1LO), E(2TO), silent and A1(2TO) modes show an abrupt decrease in Raman shifts during the phase transition with composition. The change of Raman spectra with temperature are discussed for nanopowders with composition near the morphotropic phase boundary and that of tetragonal phase.

Abstract:Phase stability of the ferroelectric materials at high temperature is extremely important to their device performance. BaxSr1−xTiO3 (BST) nanoparticles with different Sr contents (x = 1, 0.91, 0.65, 0.4, and 0) are prepared by a facile hydrothermal method. Using Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses under in situ heating conditions (up to 300 °C), the phase transitions of BST nanoparticles between 25 °C and 280 °C are comprehensively investigated. The original Curie temperature of BST nanoparticles decreases abruptly with the increase in Sr content, which is more obvious than in the bulk or film material. Besides, an abnormal phase transition from cubic to tetragonal structure is observed from BST nanoparticles and the transition temperature rises along with the increase in Sr content. Direct TEM evidences including a slight lattice distortion have been provided. Differently, BaTiO3 nanoparticles remained in the tetragonal phase during the above temperature ranges.
