Abstract:The direct alpha-alkylation of ketones with alcohols has emerged as a new green protocol to construct C-C bonds with H2O as the sole byproduct. In this work, a very simple and convenient Pd/C catalytic system for the direct alpha-alkylation of ketones with primary alcohols in pure water is developed. Based on this catalytic system, aqueous mixtures of dilute acetone, 1-butanol, and ethanol (mimicking ABE fermentation products) can be directly transformed into C-5-C-11 or longer-chain ketones and alcohols, which are precursors to fuels.

Abstract:Conversion of alkynes into ketones by hydration is one of the most fundamental organic addition reactions. Traditional methods for alkyne hydration suffer from usage of toxic and costly metals, excessive acids, harsh conditions, and long reaction times, bringing about an urgent desire to explore more efficient and green protocols to complete this transformation. A metal-free efficient protocol for the accelerated hydration of alkynes in microdroplets was successfully developed in this work to overcome these drawbacks. The hydration process was finished under room temperature using only 18 mol % sulfuric acid as the catalyst and acetonitrile as the solvent. Complete conversions were feasible on the low millisecond time scale in microdroplets for a wide range of alkynes bearing functional groups, including electron-withdrawing groups and electron-donating groups. This is in sharp contrast to trace amounts of ketones or none in 20 min in bulk phase. Compared to the bulk reaction under the same conditions, the reactions in microdroplets are accelerated by 4 to 5 orders of magnitude as seen by the increase in measured rate constants. Further, the accelerated microdroplet hydration can be scaled up to an acetophenone amount of 57.2 +/- 0.1 mg min(-1) (3.43 +/- 0.01 g h(-1)) by using 2 mol L-1 phenylacetylene sprayed at 300 L min(-1). The microdroplet protocol offers several advantages including ultrahigh acceleration, complete conversion, mild reaction conditions (metal, light, and heat free), and minimal post purification, as well as a wide substrate scope, making it attractive for green and sustainable chemistry.

Abstract:A three‐component allylic alkylation reaction of α‐diazo ketones, water and allyl carbonate under the cooperative catalysis of Rh2(OAc)4, Pd2(dba)3 and Brønster acid was disclosed. This method provids an expeditious access to α‐keto homoallylic alcohols in good to high yields. Controlled experiments support that the transformations proceed through cross‐interception of two active intermediates Pd‐allyl species and enol intermediates derived from oxonium ylides. Moreover, synthetic transformations of the generated products enable the creation of motifs enriched with dense functional groups, underscoring their potential as valuable building blocks.

Abstract:α-Hydroxy ketones are a class of vital organic skeletons that generally exist in a variety of natural products and high-value chemicals. However, the traditional synthetic route for their production involves toxic Hg salts and corrosive H2SO4 as catalysts, resulting in harsh conditions and the undesired side reaction of Meyer–Schuster rearrangement. In this study, CO2-promoted hydration of propargylic alcohols was achieved for the synthesis of various α-hydroxy ketones. Notably, this process was catalyzed using an environmentally friendly and cost-effective biomass-based ionic liquids/CuCl system, which effectively eliminated the side reaction. The ionic liquids utilized in this system are derived from natural biomass materials, which exhibited recyclability and catalytic activity under 1 bar of CO2 pressure without volatile organic solvents or additives. Evaluation of the green metrics revealed the superiority of this CuCl/ionic liquid system in terms of environmental sustainability. Further mechanistic investigation attributed the excellent performance to the ionic liquid component, which exhibited multifunctionality in activating substrates, CO2 and the Cu component.

Abstract:The efficient "on water" protocol was developed by employing molybdenum‐based polyoxometalate [N(C4H9)4]2[Mo6O19] as the photocatalyst. This water‐accelerated photoinduced process affords versatile ketones from aldehydes straightforwardly, showcasing exceptional substrate generality. Its applicability to life‐related molecules such as amino acids, peptides, and sugars, further demonstrates the bioorthogonal application. The mechanistic investigation highlights the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) process between the excited‐state POM and benzaldehyde for acyl radical formation. Highly efficient gram‐scale flow operation underlines the industrial applicability of this transformative strategy.

Abstract:Aim To report a method for Michael additions of thioalcohols and α,β-nsaturated ketenes,look for a green and efficient synthesis pathway.Methods Through the screening of the experimental conditions,γ-Carbonyl thioether was synthesized and characterized through thiols and enones added in water at room temperature without the use of any additive.Results The γ-Carbonyl thioethers was synthesized successfully and the possible mechanism was analyzed.Conclusion This method is simple,usable with mild condition,and has high yield,which owns good prospect of application.

Abstract:The asymmetric direct aldol reactions of a wide scope of aromatic aldehydes, with unmodified ketones in the presence of 1 mol % of organocatalyst prepared from (2R,3R)-diethyl 2-amino-3-hydroxysuccinate and trans-4-hydroxy-L-proline, were performed in water, affording aldol products in high yields with excellent diastereoselectivities of up to >99:1 and enantioselectivities of up to 98%. Abstract:A strategy for the synthesis of alpha-alkylated ketones via one-pot, sequential, catalytic hydration of alkynes and alpha-alkylation with alcohols was proposed and successfully accomplished. In the presence of chloro[1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl) imidazol-2-ylidene] gold(I) ([(IPr) AuCl])/silver triflate (AgOTf) and water, a series of alkynes are first hydrated to give the corresponding methyl ketones, which in turn are alpha-alkylated by adding pentamethylcyclopentadienyliridium-(III) chloride ([Cp*IrCl2](2))/KOtBu and alcohols to the reaction mixture. Notably, this reaction is highly attractive because of easily available starting materials, high atom efficiency, good to excellent yields, and minimal consumption of chemicals and energy. The present research will also facilitate the development of one-pot, sequential, catalytic reactions based on "hydrogen autotransfer" (or "hydrogen-borrowing") processes.
