Abstract:The catalytic activity of novel carbohydrate-derived prolinamide in the enantioselective aldol reactions has been examined for the first time. The organocatalyst 2b was found to be an efficient organocatalyst for the asymmetric aldol reaction in water. This organocatalyst is applicable to the reactions of a wide range of aromatic aldehydes with cyclic and acyclic ketones in high yields (up to 98%). These reactions exhibit high anti/syn ratios (up to 99%) and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99%). Importantly, the catalyst can be easily recovered and recycled with only a slight decrease in enantioselectivity after five cycles.

Abstract:Near-critical water (NCW) has drawn increasing attention as an environmentally benign medium for organic chemical reactions, especially acid/base catalysis without added acid or base. However, problems such as low reaction rates and poor selectivity exist for organic syntheses in NCW that greatly hinder the application of this attractive technique in industrially interesting processes. We have developed a novel solvent system to accelerate base-catalyzed reactions by the addition of NH3 to NCW. The reactions demonstrated include hydrolysis of cinnamaldehyde and aldol condensation of benzaldehyde with acetaldehyde. The reaction kinetics of the two reactions were determined. The effects of the NH3 concentration and temperature on the reactions were also investigated. The pOH of NH3-enriched NCW was estimated. The results demonstrate the feasibility of using NH3-enriched NCW as a sustainable reaction medium for the acceleration of base-catalyzed reactions.

Abstract:An efficient, clean and facile protocol for the Knoevenagel condensation of aromatic aldehydes with active methylene compounds catalysed by task specific ionic liquid 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]-undec-7-en-8-ium acetate in an aqueous medium has been developed. The reactions proceed at room temperature and high to excellent yields were afforded. The work-up procedure is very simple. The ionic liquid could be recycled for 10 runs without noticeably loss of its catalytic activity.

A Novel Process for Synthesis of Benzaldehyde in Near-critical Water

Abstract:A novel process for synthesis of benzaldehyde in near-critical water (NCW) without using any catalyst was proposed. The experiments show that, without the help of catalyst, the cinnamaldehyde can be hydrolyzed to form benzaldehyde in the NCW. During the hydrolysis, the product yield first increases and then declines with the residence time of the reaction, and as the temperature increases, the reaction rate undergoes a dramatic increase, which results in shorter the reaction time for obtaining the maximum product yield. Over 57.0% (mole) yield of benzaldehyde could be reached under the optimized conditions of 280°C, 15 MPa and 6 h residence time. The kinetics of non-catalyzed hydrolysis of cinnamaldehyde in water at 15 MPa and temperature from 249°C to 320°C was investigated and the activation energy evaluated from the Arrhenius equation is 59.8 kJ·mol -1. Without introducing any other reagents in the reaction, the proposed novel process for synthesis of benzaldehyde in NCW offers not only an environmentally friendly, but also well conserved natural properties for benzaldehyde.

Abstract:The asymmetric direct aldol reactions of a wide scope of aromatic aldehydes, with unmodified ketones in the presence of 1 mol % of organocatalyst prepared from (2R,3R)-diethyl 2-amino-3-hydroxysuccinate and trans-4-hydroxy-L-proline, were performed in water, affording aldol products in high yields with excellent diastereoselectivities of up to >99:1 and enantioselectivities of up to 98%. Abstract:Asymmetric reactions in water and in aqueous solutions have become an area of fast growing interest recently. Although for a long time neglected as a medium for organic reactions, water has attracted attention as the most widely distributed solvent in the world. Indeed, water is the solvent used by nature for biological chemistry including aldol reactions being essential for glycolysis, gluconeogenesis and related processes. Consequently, artificial catalysts designed and used for aldol reactions in water can be promising for the synthesis of enantiopure molecules and are also important for the understanding of complex chemistry of life. This tutorial review summarizes recent developments in the area of aqueous asymmetric aldol reactions highlighting two fundamental directions--development of water compatible chiral Lewis acids and amine-based organocatalysts.

Abstract:Simple mixing of chiral amines and surfactant Brønsted acids such as p-dodecyl benzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) leads to highly effective and selective organocatalysts in water. The in situ generated catalysts catalyze highly stereoselective desymmetrization of prochiral ketones via direct aldol reactions (up to >16:1 dr, >99% ee) in water using micelle as reaction media. The current strategy was also applied in asymmetric Michael addition leading to a catalytic system with good activity and stereoselectivity.

Abstract:This review gives a brief introduction of the catalytic asymmetric carbon–carbon bond formation reactions, such as aldol, Mannich, Diels–Alder, and Michael reactions, which were carried out in aqueous media or positively influenced by water addition. Many examples are given here to demonstrate that water has a potency to accelerate the reaction and/or enhance the selectivity. The induction of some catalyst structures to the chirality of the corresponding products is also discussed.

Abstract:Aromatic donor modified prolinamide and aromatic acceptor modified thiourea were synthesized. They self‐assembled into a cooperative organocatalytic system through the aromatic donor‐acceptor interaction and catalyzed aldol reactions in high yields and stereoselectivity on water. The aromatic donor‐acceptor interaction was confirmed by the mass spectrum, UV‐vis titraition and 1H‐NMR titration experiments.
