Abstract:A water-soluble salen-Co(III) complex was studied as catalyst for hydration of terminal alkynes to methyl ketones in the presence of H2SO4 as a co-catalyst. The products were obtained with excellent yields using relatively low catalyst loadings and a simple protocol. Notably, the products were easily separated from the catalyst after reaction by extraction, and the catalyst could be recovered and reused with only a slight loss of activity.

Abstract:An efficient protocol for chemoselective synthesis of 2-substituted benzimidazoles from a variety of aliphatic/aromatic/heteroaryl aldehydes and o-phenylenediamine derivatives promoted by NaHSO3 in water had been developed. The amount of NaHSO3 had a great effect on the reaction selectivity of 2-substituted benzimidazole and 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazole when the reaction was carried out in water. When the amount of the NaHSO3 was more than 11 equivalents, the 2-substituted benzimidazole could be highly selectively formed as the sole product. NaHSO3 was firstly reacted with aldehyde to form the aldehyde sodium bisulfite, which reacted with o-phenylenediamine to form the 2-substituted benzimidazole and inhibited the formation of 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazole. This protocol solved the poor selectivity problem appearing in traditional method when cyclocondensation between o-phenylenediamine and aldehydes. The method also had advantage of simple work up by filtrating the single 2-substituted benzimidazole precipitates from reaction mixture at the end of the reaction without further purification. In addition, the method was applicable to both electron-rich and electron-poor starting materials, which was successfully used for synthesizing nine novel 2-substituted benzimidazole derivatives containing a 1,2,3-triazole moiety. They were characterized by NMR, IR and HRMS spectrum. Moreover, this method had been applied to a large scale synthesis of 2-substituted benzimidazole derivatives.

Abstract:Near-critical water (NCW) has drawn increasing attention as an environmentally benign medium for organic chemical reactions, especially acid/base catalysis without added acid or base. However, problems such as low reaction rates and poor selectivity exist for organic syntheses in NCW that greatly hinder the application of this attractive technique in industrially interesting processes. We have developed a novel solvent system to accelerate base-catalyzed reactions by the addition of NH3 to NCW. The reactions demonstrated include hydrolysis of cinnamaldehyde and aldol condensation of benzaldehyde with acetaldehyde. The reaction kinetics of the two reactions were determined. The effects of the NH3 concentration and temperature on the reactions were also investigated. The pOH of NH3-enriched NCW was estimated. The results demonstrate the feasibility of using NH3-enriched NCW as a sustainable reaction medium for the acceleration of base-catalyzed reactions.

Abstract:The synthesis of nitrile under mild conditions was achieved via dehydration of primary amide using lead salts as catalyst. The reaction processes were intensified by not only adding surfactant but also continuously removing the only by-product, water from the system. Both aliphatic and aromatic nitriles can be prepared in this manner with moderate to excellent yields. The reaction mechanisms were obtained with high-level quantum chemical calculations, and the crucial role the anionic ligand plays in the transformations were revealed.

Abstract:Simple mixing of chiral amines and surfactant Brønsted acids such as p-dodecyl benzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) leads to highly effective and selective organocatalysts in water. The in situ generated catalysts catalyze highly stereoselective desymmetrization of prochiral ketones via direct aldol reactions (up to >16:1 dr, >99% ee) in water using micelle as reaction media. The current strategy was also applied in asymmetric Michael addition leading to a catalytic system with good activity and stereoselectivity.

Abstract:An asymmetric umpolung addition of hydrazones as alkyl carbanion equivalents with imines in water was developed under the catalysis of a Ru-diamine-diphosphine system in the presence of crown ether. Chiral amines were obtained in moderate to good yields with high enantioselectivities. The usage of water afforded better yields and enantioselectivities than that in organic solvents, which provided a new method for green sustainable synthesis of chiral amines.

Abstract:The reaction yield of nitriles hydration using a catalyst depends on the aqueous medium. Using ab initio molecular dynamics, we probed whether ''in‐water'' (in bulk medium) or ''on‐water'' (at the interface with vacuum) conditions can change the onset of the reaction. Investigating a hydrogen‐bond mediated mechanism, the lifetimes of the intermolecular interaction between benzonitrile and choline in the two protocols were compared, and the diffusion of the hydroxide anion around the cyano group was discussed.

Abstract:A Cu‐catalyzed multi‐component reaction of trifluoromethylated β‐amino ketones and nitriles using tert‐butyl nitrite as a diazotization reagent has been developed. Under the optimized conditions, N‐trifluoroalkyl amides were obtained with yields up to 87%. Control experiments and computational studies reveal that the reaction proceeds through the generation of diazo, in situ formation of nitrile ylide, water addition and final enol tautomerism. This approach features mild reaction conditions, wide substrate tolerance, and scale‐up applicability, which provides an efficient and practical strategy for amide synthesis.
