Abstract:Comprehensive Summary A metal‐free, green, and sustainable functionalization of unactivated alkyl sp3 C–H bonds is reported using iodine (III) as a feasible dehydrogenation agent under visible light or KBr, and alkyl chlorides, bromides, alcohols, and ketones could be constructed by addition of different coupling reagents. Cheap and safe iodobenzene diacetate was used to form a radical to activate the alkyl sp3 C–H bond in a highly efficient manner, which can construct different alkylation products by adding corresponding coupling reagents. Abstract:An effective and environmentally benign procedure for the synthesis of isoxazolines and isoxazoles has been developed by a cycloaddition of nitrile oxides with alkenes or alkynes in water. In this approach, potassium chloride is first oxidized into chlorine in water by the environmentally friendly oxidant Oxone®, then aldoximes are oxidized into nitrile oxides by the in situ generated hypochlorous acid, finally a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between nitrile oxides and alkenes or alkynes occurs to provide the corresponding isoxazolines and isoxazoles in good yields.

Abstract:Transition metal-catalyzed C-H bond halogenation is an important alternative to the highly utilized directed-lithiation methods and increases the accessibility of the synthetically valuable aryl halide compounds. However, this approach often requires impractical reagents, such as IOAc, or strong co-oxidants. Therefore, the development of methodology utilizing inexpensive oxidants and catalyst containing earth-abundant transition metals under mild experimental conditions would represent a significant advance in the field. Success in this endeavor requires a full understanding of the mechanisms and reactivity governing principles of this process. Here, we report intimate mechanistic details of the Pd(II)-catalyzed C-H iodination with molecular I2 as the sole oxidant. Namely, we elucidate the impact of the: (a) Pd-directing group (DG) interaction, (b) nature of oxidant, and (c) nature of the functionalized C-H bond [C(sp(2))-H vs C(sp(3))-H] on the Pd(II)/Pd(IV) redox and Pd(II)/Pd(II) redox-neutral mechanisms of this reaction. We find that both monomeric and dimeric Pd(II) species may act as an active catalyst during the reaction, which preferentially proceeds via the Pd(II)/Pd(II) redox-neutral electrophilic cleavage (EC) pathway for all studied substrates with a functionalized C(sp(2))-H bond. In general, a strong Pd-DG interaction increases the EC iodination barrier and reduces the I-I oxidative addition (OA) barrier. However, the increase in Pd-DG interaction alone is not enough to make the mechanistic switch from EC to OA: This occurs only upon changing to substrates with a functionalized C(sp(3))-H bond. We also investigated the impact of the nature of the electrophile on the C(sp(2))-H bond halogenation. We predicted molecular bromine (Br2) to be more effective electrophile for the C(sp(2))-H halogenation than I2. Subsequent experiments on the stoichiometric C(sp(2))-H bromination by Pd(OAc)2 and Br2 confirmed this prediction.The findings of this study advance our ability to design more efficient reactions with inexpensive oxidants under mild experimental conditions.

Abstract:An I-/TBHP catalyzed oxidative amination with benzophenone imine under environmentally benign conditions was developed. A wide range of substrates underwent oxidative amination with benzophenone imine to afford the corresponding primary amine and amide products in good yields. Abstract:Herein, we report a general method for the synthesis of NH-sulfoximines and NH-sulfonimidamides through direct electrochemical oxidative catalysis involving an iodoarene(I)/iodoarene(III) redox couple. In addition, dibenzothiazines can be synthesized from [1,1'-biaryl]-2-sulfides under standard conditions. Notably, only a catalytic amount of iodoarene is required for the generation in situ of an active hypervalent iodine catalyst, which avoids the need for an excess of a hypervalent iodine reagent relative to conventional approaches. Moreover, this protocol features broad substrate scope and wide functional group tolerance, delivering the target compounds with good-to-excellent yields even for a scale of more than 10 g.

Abstract:Radical chemistry is an important enabling tool for organic synthesis but can be plagued by the lack of comprehensive polarity and therefore reactivity analysis scheme. Herein we have formulated a systematic radical polarity analysis framework for the projection of radical reactivity patterns. An iodine(III)-mediated photochemical C-H azolation reaction has been envisaged and developed based on the set of empirical guidelines. The synthesis features an environmentally benign reagent, a mild reaction condition, an operationally simple protocol, and a broad substrate scope. The inclusive demonstration of reactivity for ether, thioether, amide, benzylic, and allylic C-H bonds promises synthetic utility in a pervasive range of application settings.

Abstract:A mild and efficient catalytic method for the iodination of benzoic acids has been explored. The catalytic system comprising [RhCp*Cl2]2 and PhI(OAc)2 allowed the ortho-selective iodination products in the absence of any additive or base. This protocol features relatively broad substrate scope and operational simplicity. Air and moisture are also well tolerated. Importantly, readily available and cheap potassium iodide served as iodinating reagent.

Abstract:Herein, we report the α‐C–H acyloxylation of sulfides and disulfides enabled by hypervalent iodine(III) reagents via photoredox catalysis. The methoxylbenziodoxole derivatives serve as the hydrogen atom transfer agent, the mild oxidant, and the acyloxylation source in the reaction. External nucleophiles can also be introduced to the α‐C–H of sulfides. The reaction applies to various aryl and alkyl sulfides including methionine peptide derivatives. Disulfides are applicable for the first time with excellent chemoselectivity and functional group compatibility.

Abstract:We introduce N heterocycle-stabilized iodanes (NHIs) as suitable reagents for the mild oxidation of activated alcohols. Two different protocols, both involving activation by chloride additives, were used to synthesize benzylic ketones and aldehydes without overoxidation in up to 97% yield. Based on MS-experiments an activated hydroxy(chloro)iodane is proposed as the reactive intermediate.

Abstract:Synthesizing benzyl skeleton derivatives via direct oxidation of functionalized benzylic C-H bonds has received extensive research attention. Herein, a method was developed to prepare carbonyl compounds via photoinduced aerobic oxidation of ubiquitous benzylic C-H bonds mediated by bromine radicals and tribromomethane radicals. This method employed commercially available CBr4 as a hydrogen atom transfer reagent precursor, air as an oxidant, water as a reaction solvent, and tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (TBAPC) as an additive under mild conditions. A series of substrates bearing different functional groups was converted to aromatic carbonyls in moderate to good yields. Moreover, a low environmental factor (E-factor value=0.45) showed that the proposed method is ecofriendly and environmentally sustainable. Photocatalytic strategy for synthesizing aromatic ketones. The reaction is performed in H2O using CBr4 as a mediator and using air as an oxidant under 400 nm irradiation.
