Abstract:We herein report the iridium-catalyzed enantioselective C-H borylation of aryl chlorides. A variety of prochiral biaryl compounds could be well-tolerated, affording a vast array of axially chiral biaryls with high enantioselectivities. The current method exhibits a high turnover number (TON) of 7000, which represents the highest in functional-group-directed asymmetric C-H activation. The high TON was attributed to a weak catalyst-substrate interaction that was caused by mismatched chirality between catalyst and substrate. We also demonstrated the synthetic application of the current method by C-B, ortho-C-H, and C-Cl bond functionalization, including programmed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling for the synthesis of axially chiral polyarenes.

Abstract:The closo-dodecaborate dianion is a fundamental icosahedral boron cage with 12 identical B-H vertices. The chemistry and applications of boron clusters have inspired researchers ever since their discovery several decades ago, and the selective modification of the cage positions has remained a major synthetic challenge. A rhodium(III)-catalyzed B-H functionalization-cyclization cascade of closo-dodecaborate amides is reported. The transformations occur chemoselectively at B-H positions in the presence of C-H bonds prone to competitive cyclometalation. Previously inaccessible cage derivatives with B-C(sp(2)) and B-C(sp(3)) bonds as well as a fused diboraoxazole ring are obtained in a one-pot process. The reactions proceed under mild conditions and exhibit complete cage regioselectivity with broad functional group tolerance. These cluster derivatives enable a largely extended investigation of the application of anionic boron clusters in research areas such as photoluminescent materials and medicinal chemistry.

Abstract:The preparation of arylboronates from unactivated aryl chlorides in a transition-metal-free manner is rather challenging. There are only few examples to achieve this goal by using ultraviolet irradiation. Based on the mechanistic understanding of the diboron/methoxide/pyridine reaction system, we achieved photoactivation of the in situ generated super electron donor and developed a visible-light-induced organocatalytic method for efficient borylation of unactivated aryl chlorides.

Abstract:We describe an operationally simple transition-metal-free borylation of alkyl iodides. This method uses commercially available diboron reagents as the boron source and exhibits excellent functional group compatibility. Furthermore, a diverse range of primary and secondary alkyl iodides could be effectively transformed to the corresponding alkylboronates in excellent yield. Mechanistic investigations suggest that this borylation reaction proceeds through a single-electron transfer mechanism featuring the generation of an alkyl radical intermediate.

Abstract:Abstract Transition-metal free reactions of diazo compounds with organoboron compounds provide some unique approaches for the formation of C–C, C–B and C–Si bonds. With N-tosylhydrazones as the precursors for non-stabilized diazo compound, this type of reaction becomes practically useful in organic synthesis. Transition-metal-free synthetic methodologies for borylation, gem-diborylation, gem-silylborylation arylation, 2,2,2-trifluoroethylation and gem-difluorovinylation have been successfully developed.

Abstract:Organoborons have emerged as versatile building blocks in organic synthesis to achieve molecular diversity and as carboxylic acid bioisosteres with broad applicability in drug discovery. Traditionally, these compounds are prepared by the substitution of Grignard/lithium reagents with electrophilic boron species and Brown hydroboration. Recent developments have provided new routes for the efficient preparation of organoborons by applying reactions using chemical feedstocks with leaving groups. As compared to the previous methods that used organic halides (I, Br, and Cl), the direct borylation of less reactive C-Het and C-C bonds has become highly important to get efficiency and functional-group compatibility. This Review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of this topic, including (1) C-F bond borylation, (2) C-O bond borylation, (3) C-S bond borylation, (4) C-N bond borylation, and (5) C-C bond borylation. Considerable attention is given to the strategies and mechanisms involved. We expect that this Review will inspire chemists to discover more efficient transformations to expand this field.

Abstract:Two coordinate boron cations are rare. Herein we report the synthesis of [RNSiMe2CH2]2BF (R = Dipp 3, 1-Ad 5) (Dipp = C6H3(iPr)2, Ad = C10H15) via the reaction of BF3 with the corresponding dilithiated diamides. Subsequent abstraction of fluoride provided the corresponding borinium salts, [(RNSiMe2CH2)2B][B(C6F5)4] (R = Dipp 6, 1-Ad 8). While the former was generated, the latter proved isolable and was crystallographically characterized.

Abstract:The hydroboration of alkenes of diverse structural types by assorted N-heterocyclic carbene boranes can be accomplished by addition of 5-10% diiodine. For example, reaction of 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene borane (diMe-Imd-BH3) with 10% I-2 followed by addition of 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene provided the corresponding thexyl NHC-borane (diMe-Imd-BH(2)thexyl) in 75% yield. This and related monohydroboration products are stable to chromatography and storage. The scope of the new reaction is described, and the mechanism is probed by B-11 NMR experiments.
