Abstract:Cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN)-mediated oxidation of methylenecyclobutanes was investigated. Compared with the similar reactions of methylenecyclopropanes, the reaction products were quite different. Instead of the desired ring-enlarged product cyclopentanones, a cyclobutyl ring-intact product, spirocyclobutyl-1,2-dioxethane, was obtained. The structures of these spiroheterocycle-containing compounds are interesting, and the reactions are potentially valuable in both organic synthesis and mechanism research.

Abstract:Nitrocylcohexadienones have been applied as nitration reagents for mild, mono-nitrating reactions. The original synthesis of 2,3,5,6-tetrabromo-4-methyl-4-nitrocylcohexa-2,5-dien-1-one appeared to be difficult to pursue due to both the solvent system and reaction conditions. Therefore, we applied a modified solvent system and optimized the reaction conditions to prepare the dienone at 0°C, eventually overcome the difficulties.

Abstract:Cerium-doped MCM-48 molecular sieves were synthesized hydrothermally and characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, transmission electron microscope, FT-IR spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that all the samples held the structure of MCM-48, and Ce could enter the framework of MCM-48. However, when Ce/Si molar ratio in the samples was high (0.04 or 0.059), there were CeO2 crystallites as secondary phase in the extraframework of MCM-48. Ce-doped MCM-48 was a very efficient catalyst for the oxidation of cyclohexane in a solvent-free system with oxygen as an oxidant. In the conditions of 0.5 MPa O2 and 413 K for 5 h, the conversion of cyclohexane was 8.1% over Ce-MCM-48-0.02, the total selectivity of cyclohexanol and cyclohaxnone was 98.7%. With an increase of Ce content, the conversion of cyclohexane and the selectivity to cyclohexanol decreased somewhat, but the selectivity to cyclohexanone increased.

Abstract:A mechanistically interesting and practical method for the synthesis of functionalized spiro[4.5]decanes is developed, featuring oxidative dearomatization-induced ring expansion of cyclobutanes as the key element. The new method enables facile access to a variety of spiro[4.5]cyclohexadienones with good efficiency and generality. Further elaboration of the resulting products into other valuable scaffolds is also explored, leading to the discovery of an interesting compound that displays a promising biological profile. Moreover, we have also conducted a comprehensive computational study that provides a deep insight into the mechanism of the reaction.

Abstract:Base-switched methylenation and formylation using tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) as a carbon source have been achieved under mild conditions, catalyzed by CuCl2, with atmospheric oxygen as oxidant. Bisindolylmethanes, diphenylmethanes and 3-formylindoles were synthesized with excellent regioselectivity and good yield.

Abstract:A simple ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) catalyzed functionalization of ketones through double C-C bond cleavage strategy has been disclosed. This reaction provides a mild, practical method toward carbamoyl azides, which are versatile intermediates and building blocks in organic synthesis. Based on relevant mechanistic studies, a unique and plausible C-C bond and N-O bond cleavage process is proposed, where the oxyamination intermediate plays an important role in this reaction.
