Abstract:A promising and useful method has been accomplished for regio‐ and diastereoselective synthesis of tetrahydro‐benzofuro[3,2‐c]chromenones through ceric(IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN) mediated oxidative coupling of cyclic/acyclic 1,3‐dicarbonyl compounds to 2‐aryl/heteroarylchromenes followed by a base assisted cyclization. The significant features of the method encircle easy accessibility of the starting materials, high air stability and low toxicity of oxidant CAN, high product yield, operationally simple and eco‐friendly reaction conditions. Trapping of a radical intermediate with radical scavenger TEMPO (detected by LC‐MS) from the reaction mixture proved that the oxidative coupling is a radical mediated process.

Abstract:A sustainable, cyanide-free synthesis of alkyl nitriles via the aerobic oxidative deconstruction of unstrained cycloalkanones with ammonium salts has been developed. Using inexpensive and stable ammonium salts as the nitrogen source, a variety of alkyl nitriles containing a distal carbonyl group were obtained in good yields under visible-light-promoted iron catalysis. This protocol is characterized by mild conditions, abundant and environmentally benign materials, and high atom and step economy with minimal waste generation. The primary mechanism study revealed that 1O2 is likely to be involved in this reaction.

Abstract:The oxidative coupling of primary aromatic amines was investigated. Ce(SO4)(2) can mediate the oxidative coupling of primary aromatic amines in water to dimers, trimers and/or tetramers, which depended on the substituents of primary aromatic amines. When 2,6-dimethylaniline or 2,6-diethylaniline was used as substrate, dimer, and tetramer were formed as major products. When 2,6-diisopropylaniline or 2,6-dihaloanilines was used as substrate, dimer, and trimer were formed. The mechanistic aspect was also investigated.

Abstract:Synthetic photoelectrochemistry shows significant advantages in handling of reactive intermediates via a sustainable way and has developed to be the frontier of single electron transfer chemistry. The exploration of new photoelectrocatalysts, especially uncommon metal-based ones, will contribute to the exploitation of new synthetic strategies. Benefiting from reversible redox ability and photoactivity, the cerium salt is expected to become a new photo-electro-response medium to generate active species. In this work, with a green and sustainable reaction system (neutral conditions and renewable light and electricity as energy sources), we developed a novel type of generation of Cl· via electrooxidation and photoinduced ligand-to-metal charge transfer by using CeCl3 as the photoelectrocatalyst in the oxydichlorination of aryl acetylene. Importantly, we found that the slow releasing of chloride ions and chlorine radicals played an important role in radical chlorination. In addition, several analytical methods including cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and control experiments were conducted to investigate the reasonable mechanism.

Abstract:An electrochemical approach in promoting directed C-H alkynylation with terminal alkyne via iridium catalysis is reported. This work employed anodic oxidation of Ir(III) intermediate (characterized by X-ray crystallography) to promote reductive elimination, giving the desired coupling products in good yields (up to 95%) without the addition of any other external oxidants. This transformation is suitable for various directing groups with H2 as the only by-product, which warrants a high atom economy and practical oxidative C-C bond formation under mild conditions.

Abstract:A rhodium-catalyzed oxidative annulation of N-acyl anilines with alkynes was developed by using the acylamino group as a traceless directing group for the first time. Various N-acyl anilines and para-or meta-substituted diphenylacetylenes were well tolerated, and a series of 1,2,3,4-tetrasubstituted naphthalenes were readily synthesized in good to excellent yields. Meanwhile, this method also provides a new strategy for the N-dearylation of N-phenylamides.

Abstract:N-Benzylidene benzylamine is an important pharmaceutical intermediate and industrial chemical. Traditionally, it is synthesized via the reaction between benzylamine and benzaldehyde by using Lewis acid catalysts, which usually suffers from the difficulty of product separation and environmental unfriendliness. An alternative approach is the oxidative coupling of benzylamine catalyzed by metal-based catalysts, which is also beset by the contamination of metallic impurities. Thus, the development of green, metal-free and reusable heterogeneous catalysts is highly attractive. Herein, we report an efficient metal-free catalyst, hierarchical carbon nanocages (hCNCs) synthesized by the in-situ magnesium oxide template method with benzene precursor at different temperatures (700, 800 and 900 degrees C), for the oxidative coupling of benzylamine to N-benzylidene benzylamine. The hCNCs feature multi-scale hierarchical pore structure, high specific surface area and abundant surface defects. The hCNC700 exhibits excellent catalytic performance for the solvent-free oxidative coupling of benzylamine to N-benzylidene benzylamine under mild conditions (10 degrees C, atmospheric O-2). Specifically, after reacting for 8 h, both benzylamine conversion and N-benzylidene benzylamine selectivity are larger than 98%, far better than the counterparts of carbon nanotubes, reduced graphene oxide and activated carbon, as well as the reported mesoporous carbon and graphene oxide. The hCNC700 also presents high mass activity, significantly better than the reported carbon-based catalysts. Its catalytic performance is almost unattenuated after 6 times of recycling, exhibiting good stability. By comparison experiments, the catalytic activity of hCNCs results from the intrinsic defects of carbon, and the excellent performance of hCNC700 is mainly attributed to the following aspects: (i) its ultra-high specific surface area can provide abundant surface active sites (defects), (ii) the unique hierarchical pore structure is very conducive to mass transfer in the reaction process, enabling the full utilization of these active sites. In addition, hCNC700 shows good catalytic performance for different substrates, with high catalytic activity (>90% conversion rate for 12 h reaction) and high selectivity (>95%) for oxidative coupling of aromatic methylene amines. This study provides a new avenue for the development of cheap and efficient carbon-based metal-free catalysts.

Abstract:Cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN)-mediated oxidation of methylenecyclobutanes was investigated. Compared with the similar reactions of methylenecyclopropanes, the reaction products were quite different. Instead of the desired ring-enlarged product cyclopentanones, a cyclobutyl ring-intact product, spirocyclobutyl-1,2-dioxethane, was obtained. The structures of these spiroheterocycle-containing compounds are interesting, and the reactions are potentially valuable in both organic synthesis and mechanism research.

Abstract:Herein, we report an efficient one-pot iridium-catalyzed reductive hydroamination of terminal alkynes with amines. A variety of primary amines and secondary amines are amenable to this catalytic system, leading to the complicated aliphatic amines in excellent yields. More broadly, this straightforward and convenient transformation do not just employ inexpensive and easy to handle HCO 2 H as reducing agent, but also employs H 2 O as reaction media, which makes this strategy be in accordance with green and sustainable chemistry principles.

Abstract:A mild and efficient protocol for the synthesis of 2,2'-difunctional biaryls from readily available benzamides and oximes by Co(OAc)2·4H2O catalysis has been developed. The catalytic cycle that includes aerobic oxidation of Co(I) to Co(III) is successfully achieved for the first time through dual-chelation-assisted C-H/C-H coupling with the assistance of catalytic Mn(acac)3. The catalytic system exhibits powerful reactivity and tolerates a large number of sensitive functional groups.
