Abstract:An efficient protocol for chemoselective synthesis of 2-substituted benzimidazoles from a variety of aliphatic/aromatic/heteroaryl aldehydes and o-phenylenediamine derivatives promoted by NaHSO3 in water had been developed. The amount of NaHSO3 had a great effect on the reaction selectivity of 2-substituted benzimidazole and 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazole when the reaction was carried out in water. When the amount of the NaHSO3 was more than 11 equivalents, the 2-substituted benzimidazole could be highly selectively formed as the sole product. NaHSO3 was firstly reacted with aldehyde to form the aldehyde sodium bisulfite, which reacted with o-phenylenediamine to form the 2-substituted benzimidazole and inhibited the formation of 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazole. This protocol solved the poor selectivity problem appearing in traditional method when cyclocondensation between o-phenylenediamine and aldehydes. The method also had advantage of simple work up by filtrating the single 2-substituted benzimidazole precipitates from reaction mixture at the end of the reaction without further purification. In addition, the method was applicable to both electron-rich and electron-poor starting materials, which was successfully used for synthesizing nine novel 2-substituted benzimidazole derivatives containing a 1,2,3-triazole moiety. They were characterized by NMR, IR and HRMS spectrum. Moreover, this method had been applied to a large scale synthesis of 2-substituted benzimidazole derivatives.

Abstract:A green and efficient catalytic system has been developed for the Cu-catalyzed Ullmann-type C-N coupling reactions in water. With CuI as catalyst, N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-beta-D-glucopyranosylamine as ligand, aryl iodides and aryl bromides bearing various electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups could be coupled with N-nucleophiles in water with good yields (61%similar to 96%). The catalytic system was expanded successfully to the reaction of indoles with 4-iodoanisole in water.

Abstract:An efficient and green route of C-C bond formation was disclosed to construct 2,3-diaryl-1,4-diketones from α-methylene ketones by the catalysis of tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI) with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as an oxidant in water. This reaction affords the desired products in good to excellent yields from readily available materials, with a broad substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, and mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, tetrasubstituted furan and pyrrole were smoothly constructed from α-methylene ketones in one pot with 96 and 90% yields, respectively.

Abstract:The oxidative coupling of primary aromatic amines was investigated. Ce(SO4)(2) can mediate the oxidative coupling of primary aromatic amines in water to dimers, trimers and/or tetramers, which depended on the substituents of primary aromatic amines. When 2,6-dimethylaniline or 2,6-diethylaniline was used as substrate, dimer, and tetramer were formed as major products. When 2,6-diisopropylaniline or 2,6-dihaloanilines was used as substrate, dimer, and trimer were formed. The mechanistic aspect was also investigated.

Abstract:Transition-metal-catalyzed acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling (ADC) has emerged as a sustainable synthetic strategy for the construction of N-heteroaromatics. Herein, a series of water-soluble amidato Ru catalysts were designed, synthesized, and utilized in the selective synthesis of 2-substituted benzimidazoles from the aromatic diamines and primary alcohols, as well as 2-substituted quinolines from the substituted 2-aminobenzyl alcohols and acetophenones via the ADC strategy in water. Catalyst 1 d bearing a strong electron-donating hydroxyl group on the ligand exhibited the best catalytic activity. The catalytic system demonstrated remarkable efficiency and versatility, allowing for the application of over 40 substrates in two ADC reactions with good to high yields. Based on control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, a plausible mechanism was proposed, highlighting the significant role of functionalized amidato Ru complexes in catalyzing alcohol dehydrogenation via an outer-sphere pathway.

Abstract:Cu-Catalyzed oxidative 1 : 2 couplings of arynes with nucleophilic terminal alkynes under aerobic conditions are described herein. A mechanistic investigation revealed a plausible involvement of an aryl-Cu(iii)-generating pathway. Abstract:Under open-flask conditions in the presence of commercially available FeCl3·6H2O, N,N-disubstituted anilines can be converted into diversely functionalized benzidines with yields of up to 99%. Oxidative coupling was extended to N-monosubstituted anilines, and the method was applied to the efficient preparation of 6,6'-biquinoline. Mechanistic investigations have also been performed to explain the observed reactivities.

Abstract:Dess–Martin periodinane (DMP) is a broadly applicable oxidant in chemical synthesis. In this work, an efficient and convenient synthesis of N-substituted isoquinolinone derivatives mediated by DMP was achieved through the oxidative coupling reaction of functionalized isoquinoline with readily available benzyl bromide, which is a metal-free, mild, and practical method for synthesizing isoquinoline-1,3-dione or isoquinoline-1,3,4-trione derivatives in excellent yields. The H2O18-labeling experiment was performed to gain insight into the possible mechanism for this reaction.

Abstract:A series of benzanilide compounds were synthesized through copper-catalyzed tandem reactions. With the assistance of ionic liquid as phase transfer catalyst, aryl halides, and nitriles underwent a hydrolysis/coupling pathway to form benzanilides in water. Advantages of this reaction include the use of water as the environmental friendly solvent, short reaction time, and the tolerance of various functional groups. Abstract:Copper/N, N, N', N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (Cu/TMEDA)-catalyzed ambient temperature tandem reactions of isothiocyanates with 2-iodophenols or 2-iodoanilines in water without the protection of an inert atmosphere are described, which provide a simple, rapid, environmental method for the synthesis of a variety of 2-iminobenzo-1, 3-oxathioles and 2-aminobenzothiazoles in good yields. More important, the present reaction process needs only low amounts of copper catalyst (< 1 mol%) and can yield the products on a gram scale.

Abstract:A mild and efficient protocol for the synthesis of 2,2'-difunctional biaryls from readily available benzamides and oximes by Co(OAc)2·4H2O catalysis has been developed. The catalytic cycle that includes aerobic oxidation of Co(I) to Co(III) is successfully achieved for the first time through dual-chelation-assisted C-H/C-H coupling with the assistance of catalytic Mn(acac)3. The catalytic system exhibits powerful reactivity and tolerates a large number of sensitive functional groups.
