Abstract:A nickel-catalyzed Kumada coupling of aniline derivatives was developed by selective cleavage of aryl C-N bonds under mild reaction conditions. Without preinstallation of an ortho directing group on anilines, the cross-coupling reactions of Boc-protected aromatic amines with aryl Grignard reagents afforded unsymmetric biaryls. Mechanistic studies by DFT calculations revealed that the nickel-mediated C-N bond cleavage is the rate-limiting step.

Abstract:Herein, metal-free oxidative tandem cross-dehydrogenative coupling of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds with N,N-dimethylanilines is developed. The reaction affords two new C(sp(3))-C(sp(3)) bonds in one pot. A broad range of ss-dicarbonyl compounds and N,N-dimethylanilines were compatible, and the desired products were synthesized in moderate-to-good yields.

Abstract:The direct oxidative N-acylation reaction of primary amides with aryl/alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes was achieved in the presence of azolium salt C3 and an inorganic base using 3,3',5,5'-tetra-tert-butyldipherioquinone as the oxidant, thus providing an efficient approach for the synthesis of three types of imide compounds including N-sulfonylcarboxamides, N-sulfinylcarboxamides, and dicarboxyimides in good yield.

Abstract:A tandem coupling-ketooxygenation reaction of readily accessible enediyne-carboxylic compounds with inner alkynes has been developed that utilizes the PdCl2/CuBr2 catalytic system under an O2 atmosphere and assembles a class of isoindolinones and o-acylbenzoic acids. The two oxygen atoms are regioselectively incorporated into enediyne units at the 1- and 6-positions from atmospheric molecular oxygen and H2O, respectively, during the present process. This study uncovered a formal [4C + 2C] benzannulation-diketonization of enediynes and alkynes via a coupling and decoupling strategy.

Abstract:A rhodium-catalyzed oxidative annulation of N-acyl anilines with alkynes was developed by using the acylamino group as a traceless directing group for the first time. Various N-acyl anilines and para-or meta-substituted diphenylacetylenes were well tolerated, and a series of 1,2,3,4-tetrasubstituted naphthalenes were readily synthesized in good to excellent yields. Meanwhile, this method also provides a new strategy for the N-dearylation of N-phenylamides.
Insights into the Relationship of the Heterojunction Structure and Excellent Activity: Photo-Oxidative Coupling of Benzylamine on CeO2-rod/g-C3N4 Hybrid under Mild Reaction Conditions

Abstract:Oxidation of amines to imines under light irradiation has been widely studied in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. For the first time, we demonstrate a facile mixing calcination approach for the preparation of CeO2/g-C3N4-x as a heterojunction catalyst for the photo oxidative coupling of benzylamine under the irradiation of a 300 W Xe arc lamp at 308 K with the air balloon. It was found that the rate constant of CeR/CN-66% was 3 times as high as that of pure CeO2 or g-C3N4. All kinds of structural characterizations suggested the formation of heterojunction between the CeO2 and g-C3N4, serving as a tunnel for the transfer of photoinduced charge, which may contribute to the improvement of photoactivity. Moreover, the Ce3+ ions and oxygen vacancy significantly promoted the adsorption and activation of substrate or molecular O-2. Therefore, the efficient separation of the charges, the prolonged photoinduced electron lifetime, and the abundant defect structure (increased content of Ce3+ ions or the oxygen vacancy) were considered as the main factors for the higher photo-oxidation efficiency of the CeR/CN-66%. Another striking observation that was noticed was that the CeR/CN-66% was recycled up to five cycles under the same condition and was found to be highly efficient without any obvious decrease in the activity or selectivity due to the outstanding stability of the defect structure. Thus, highly efficient CeR/CN-x heterojunction catalyst was synthesized in this work by a simple approach for the photo-oxidation of benzylamine under mild reaction conditions, and this finding may provide wide applications in other photocatalysis areas.

Abstract:A mild method for the direct C-H/N-H coupling between γ-lactams and anilines through electrochemical oxidation has been developed. The protocol proceeded smoothly without metal catalysts at room temperature to afford γ-substituted γ-lactams in good yields. It has been revealed that the quasi-divided cell which provided high current density on the anode was crucial for this reaction.

Abstract:Herein we describe a catalyst-free regioselective [3 + 3] annulation/oxidation reaction of cyclic amidines such as DBU (1,8-diazabicyclo(5.4.0)undec-7-ene) and DBN (1,5-diazabicyclo(4.3.0)non-5-ene) with activated olefins, i.e., 2-arylidenemalononitriles and 2-cyano-3-aryl acrylates, to afford tricyclic 2-pyridones and pyridin-2(1H)-imines, respectively. The mechanism has been proposed based on DFT calculations. In the reaction, the cyclic amidines serve as C,N-bisnucleophiles for the cyclization, while the olefins play a dual role by acting as both reactants and oxidants.

Abstract:Visible-light-driven photocatalysis is a sustainable, low-cost, and stable, method for chemical conversion in organic processes. A novel porous g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet (CN) photocatalytic material co-doped with nickel and cerium has been synthesized using a one-step thermal polymerization method. We used XPS, XRD, EPR, UV–vis DRS, SEM, and PL to disclose the structural, optical, and electrical features of the catalysts. Experiments with EPR radical trapping confirmed the existence of reactive oxygen species and holes in the photocatalytic activity. The charge transfer and separation efficiency of the produced catalysts were evaluated using EIS and photocurrent measurements. Ni/Ce-doped CN nanosheets showed improved photocatalytic activities under visible light irradiation, with NiCe-CN showing the best performance with 98% conversion after 2.5 h, and product selectivity exceeding 99% in light-driven amine-imine oxidation reactions. Radical trapping experiments reveal the importance of generating h + , 1 O 2 , and for photocatalytic conversion of substrates, with relevant catalytic mechanisms presented. This study provides a crucial reference for designing and synthesizing novel bimetallic co-doped g-C 3 N 4 photocatalytic materials to enhance photocatalytic organic synthesis reactions.

Abstract:Cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN)-mediated oxidation of methylenecyclobutanes was investigated. Compared with the similar reactions of methylenecyclopropanes, the reaction products were quite different. Instead of the desired ring-enlarged product cyclopentanones, a cyclobutyl ring-intact product, spirocyclobutyl-1,2-dioxethane, was obtained. The structures of these spiroheterocycle-containing compounds are interesting, and the reactions are potentially valuable in both organic synthesis and mechanism research.

Abstract:A facile preparation of 3-hydroxylisoquinolin-1, 4-diones and piperidine-2,5-dione from alkyne-tethered amide is reported under cerium photocatalysis and O2 balloon. The reaction works well with a broad reaction scope and reaction efficiency. Mechanism studies indicate that 3-hydroxylpyrrolidin-2-one-containing α-ketol radical species serves as a possible key intermediate, and the final product is attributed to a formal N-centered radical initiated [2 + 2] cyclization and α-ketol rearrangement. Interestingly, divergence towards CN bond migration and CC bond migration is reached in this radical α-ketol rearrangement.

Abstract:n‐Bu4NI/K2S2O8‐mediated C‐N coupling between aldehydes and amides is reported. A strong electronic effect is observed on the aromatic aldehyde substrates. The transformylation from aldehyde to amide takes place exclusively when an aromatic aldehyde bears electron‐donating groups at either the ortho or para position of the formyl group, while the cross‐dehydrogenative coupling dominates in the absence of these groups. Both the density functional theory (DFT) thermochemistry calculations and experimental data support the proposed single electron transfer mechanism with the formation of an acyl radical intermediate in the cross‐dehydrogenative coupling. The n‐Bu4NI/K2S2O8 mediated oxidative cyclization between 2‐aminobenzamide and aldehydes is also reported, with four quinazolin‐4(3H)‐ones prepared in 65‐99% yields.
