Abstract:The corrosion behavior of a well-polished Alloy 690 in deaerated supercritical water at 600 °C was examined. The study found that the weight gain follows a near-cubic rate law. A key observation was that the direct external oxidation and the rapid transition from internal to external oxidation within the initial 24-h exposure are responsible for its superior oxidation resistance. As exposure time increases, the transformation of Cr-rich spinel oxides and Ni-rich networks in the internal oxidation zone into Cr2O3 leads to the expansion of the protective chromia layer, effectively slowing down the oxidation process. Conversely, the Cr2O3 layer at the grain boundaries (GBs) was less effective at preventing oxidation, resulting in a significantly faster oxidation rate in these areas compared to the bulk grains. The extensive GB oxidation exhibits little consequential correlation with carbides.

Abstract:The nanograins (NG) on the top surface layer of alloy 690 were successfully prepared by ultrasonic surface rolling treatment (USRT). The average grain size of NG alloy 690 was 55 nm, and the thickness of the NG surface layer was about 1 μm. Meanwhile, the surface roughness was significantly reduced after surface nanocrystalliztion. The corrosion behavior of alloy 690 before and after USRT was studied in a secondary side environment containing chloride. Electrochemical corrosion experiments demonstrated that the passive film generated by USRT was denser than that formed on coarse-grained (CG) alloy 690. Pitting corrosion was prone to occur in grain boundaries of CG alloy 690, and the pits on the surface of NG alloy 690 were smaller than those generated on CG alloy 690 after 1000 h of an immersion experiment.

Abstract:The influence of ultrasonic surface rolling treatment (USRT) on the corrosion behaviour of nanocrystallines (NC) alloy 690 at high temperature and high pressure in simulated PWR secondary environment was performed by using Raman spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After USRT, the average size and the thickness of NC surface layer could reach 55 nm and 1 μm, respectively. Electrochemical measurements showed that the oxide film on the surface of NC alloy 690 was denser and more complete compared with coarse grained (CG) samples. The corrosion tests in ethanolamine (ETA) solution illustrated that the fine oxide particles were evenly distributed on the oxide film of NC alloy 690. The corrosion potential increased from −364 mV to −229 mV, while the corrosion current density dropped from 18.07 × 10−8 mm2 A cm−2 to 8.842 × 10−8 mm2 A cm−2 after USRT. By analysis, the inner layer of oxide film consisted of Cr2O3, NiFe2O4, and FeCr2O4, while Ni hydroxides formed the major part of the outermost layer of film. A growth model of oxide films on alloy 690 at high-temperature and high-pressure in stimulated PWR secondary environments was proposed and discussed.

Abstract:In this study, corrosion fatigue (CF) behaviour of E690 steel and simulated heat-affected zone (HAZ) microstructures were investigated in a SO2-polluted marine atmosphere. Results revealed that E690 steel and simulated HAZ microstructures were all susceptible to CF cracking in this environment with transgranular fracture. CF cracks were prone to initiate from prior austenite grain boundaries (PAGBs) for parent metal and coarse-grained HAZ (CGHAZ), whereas few microcracks were induced for fine-grained HAZ (FGHAZ). CGHAZ exhibits inferior CF behaviour due to coarse PAGBs and long bainitic lath, whereas FGHAZ exhibits superior CF behaviour because of fine grain size and bainitic lath.

Abstract:This work investigated the effect of grain ultra-refinement on the microstructure, mechanical property, and corrosion behavior of low alloy steels. The ultrafine-grain steels were obtained by using advanced thermo-mechanical processes (ATP), and their microstructures, mechanical property, and corrosion behavior were characterized by electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) electrochemical measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The morphology of the fracture surface and the microstructures of the failed tensile specimen were analyzed to investigate the failure mechanism. Grain refinement results in a significant increase in the grain boundary density, which leads to the enhanced strength and brittle fracture. The study found that the grain boundaries have a higher pitting susceptibility and crystallographic pitting has a susceptibility in order of {111} > {101} > {001}. Ultrafine grain with a high fraction of low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) impedes pitting corrosion.

Abstract:The corrosion resistance of coarse grained and nanocrystalline NiFe alloys in chloride solutions and proton exchange membrane fuel cell environment was investigated. The nanocrystalline NiFe alloys were obtained by electrodeposition, while coarse grained NiFe alloys were obtained by annealing. The results from electrochemical tests showed that coarse grained NiFe alloys had higher corrosion resistance than nanocrystalline samples in NaCl solution due to more compact passive films formed on the surface of coarse grained NiFe alloys. In addition, Raman spectra test showed that many nanocrystalline boundaries in electrodeposited NiFe alloys promoted the diffusion of nickel, which resulted in the formation of more nickel oxides and nickel hydroxides. However, the electrochemical study showed that coarse grained sample had lower corrosion resistance than nanocrystalline one in a typical proton exchange membrane fuel cell environment. The present study showed that nanocrystalline NiFe alloys were more suitable for the bipolar plates in proton exchange membrane fuel cell environment.

Abstract:Coarse-grained and fine-grained WC-Al2O3 composites were prepared by adjusting sintering process. The grain sizes of the coarse-grained and fine-grained composite are 4.29 μm and 3.14 μm, respectively. The effect of grain size on the corrosion properties of WC-Al2O3 composites in acidic and alkaline solutions was studied by electrochemical technology. Compared with fine-grained composite, coarse-grained composite has higher corrosion potential, higher total resistance and lower corrosion current density. Therefore, it can be concluded that the fine-grained composite exhibits poor corrosion resistance in acidic and alkaline solutions. The poor corrosion resistance of fine-grained composite is mainly due to more grain boundaries, which accelerates the corrosion of composite at the initial stage.

Abstract:Abstract Alloy 690, which was designed as a replacement for the Alloy 600, is widely used in the nuclear industry due to its optimum behavior to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) under nuclear reactor operating conditions. Because of this superior resistance, alloy 690 has been proposed as a candidate structural material for the Supercritical Water Reactor (SCWR), which is one of the designs of the next generation of nuclear power plants (Gen IV). In spite of this, striking results were found [1] when alloy 690 was tested without intergranular carbides. These results showed that, contrary to expectations, the crack growth rate is lower in samples without intergranular carbides than in samples with intergranular carbides. Therefore, the role of the carbides in the corrosion behavior of Alloy 690 is not yet well understood. Considering these observations, the aim of this work is to study the effect of intergranular carbides in the oxidation behavior (as a preliminary stage of degenerative processes SCC) of Alloy 690 in supercritical water (SCW) at two temperatures: 400 °C and 500 °C and 25 MPa. Oxide layers of selected specimens were studied by different techniques like Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES).

Abstract:The ultrafine grained 2205 duplex stainless steel with an average grain size of 300nm was obtained by cold rolling down to 95% reduction in thickness and reversion annealing at 900°C for 200s. The ultrafine grained sample showed higher corrosion resistance than coarse grain one in borate buffer solution at room temperature, indicating that the passive film formed on the surface of the ultrafine grained 2205 duplex stainless steel is more protective. Comparing the doping concentrations between coarse grain and ultrafine grained samples from the Mott–Schottky plots, higher corrosion resistance of ultrafine grained sample was probably attributed to lower donor density and the thicker passive film in borate buffer solution. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were further supported by Raman spectra and XPS analysis.

Abstract:The nanotultrafine grained stainless steel promoted the form of more deformation nanotwins and inhibited dislocation slip and strain induced alpha'-martensite transformation during deformation compared with coarse grained stainless steel. The diffusivity of the point defects in passive film in coarse grain stainless steel was lower than that in nano/ultrafine one. The corrosion resistance of nano/ultrafine grained stainless steel was improved by reducing content of strain induced alpha'-martensite. Moreover, the donor and acceptor densities in passive film formed on the stainless steel increased due to more strain induced alpha'-martensites and more chloride ions. Fewer strain induced alpha'-martensites and more nanotwins in nano/ultrafine grained stainless steel improved its corrosion resistance. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The effect of grain refinement on the corrosion resistance of the passive film formed on 2099 Al–Li alloy was investigated. The microscopic structures of cold rolled 2099 Al–Li aluminum alloy were characterized by Transmittance Electron Microscopy and surface activity was analysed by electron work function. The corrosion resistance of the passive film was studied by electrochemical techniques and Raman spectra. It was found that nano/ultrafine grained 2099 Al–Li alloy with refined precipitation phases was obtained by several plastic deformation process. The corrosion resistance of the 2099 Al–Li aluminum alloy was improved by grain refinement and refined precipitation phases. The improved corrosion resistance of 2099 Al–Li alloy after grain refinement was attributed to decreased electron work function. The grain refinement promoted the forming of thicker passive film and decreased acceptor concentration in passive film.
Enhanced Oxidation Resistance of Ultrafine-Grain Microstructure AlCoCrFeNi High Entropy Alloy

Abstract:This work investigates the effect of ultrafine-grain microstructure on the oxidation behavior of AlCoCrFeNi high entropy alloy (HEA). The ultrafine-grain microstructure is obtained using stationary friction processing performed at two different rotational speeds, 400 and 1800 rpm, for 5 min duration. Processed samples demonstrate high depth of refinement (DOR) and ultrafine grain size (0.43-1 μm) at high rotational speeds along with significant phase transformations from BCC/B2 to FCC microstructure. Further, surface free energy of the ultrafine-grain microstructure is enhanced up to 35%. Oxidation kinetics of the ultrafine-grained sample is decelerated up to 12-48% in a temperature range of 850-1050 °C for a duration of 100 h. Chromia and alumina were the predominant oxides formed in almost all the samples oxidized at elevated temperature. In addition, spinel Co(Cr,Fe)O/Fe(Co,Cr)O formation is also detected in the unprocessed oxidized samples. Processed samples rich in grain boundaries (GBs) promote internal oxidation to form Al-rich inner oxides. The enhanced oxidation resistance of the processed samples is attributed to the microstructural refinement and homogenization resulting in the formation of protective chromia followed by Al-rich inner oxides.

Abstract:The impact of heat treatment on the initiation and progression of localized corrosion in E690 steel in a simulated marine environment was investigated systematically. The primary cause of localized corrosion was the presence of inclusions, which led to the dissolution of the distorted matrix surrounding them. In the initial stages of corrosion, localized corrosion resulting from inclusions was the predominant form. The chemical and electrochemical mechanisms underlying matrix deformation and localized corrosion caused by inclusions were meticulously elucidated. As the immersion time was extended, the galvanic contributions at the ferrite-austenite interfaces, as well as the coarsened carbides, reduced the polarization resistance in the annealed specimen, accelerating the corrosion rate compared to the lath martensite in the as-received specimen. Consequently, the heat-treated sample promoted a transition from localized to uniform corrosion. Finally, a model was established to describe the corrosion behavior of E690 steel in the marine environment.

Abstract:The present study investigates the exfoliation corrosion (EXCO) mechanism of the surface layer (SL) and central layer (CL) of 2195 aluminum alloy extruded plates under different quenching rates. The results indicate that with a decreasing quenching rate, the EXCO resistance of both SL and CL samples improves, with the EXCO grades reducing from PB and EA to N and PB, respectively. This is contrary to the results of the EXCO quench sensitivity study in 7XXX series aluminum alloys. Furthermore, as the quenching rate decreases, the corrosion depth of SL samples decreases (from 138 to 79 μm) while that of CL samples increases (from 216 to 505 μm). Combined with microstructural characterization, the study elaborates in detail on the EXCO corrosion mechanism of the alloy's SL and CL, providing a theoretical basis for preparing aluminum-lithium alloys with higher corrosion resistance.

Abstract:The fretting corrosion testing of A690 with a sliding amplitude of 100 μm and a normal force of 20 N was conducted in a manually designed equipment with a tube-on-plate contact configuration exposed to simulated pressurized water reactor (PWR) secondary water. While A690 exhibits superior corrosion resistance, the fretting wear results in a two orders of magnitude faster oxidation rate at the contacting surface. A detailed characterization reveals that the fretting wear-induced dynamic stress/strain does not only constantly break the integrity of the oxide scale but also accelerate the consumption of Cr in the near-surface metal matrix. The degradation of corrosion resistance of A690 under fretting wear can be mainly attributed to 1) the decrease of oxide scale thickness; 2) the introduction of nanocavities and nano-cracks at the grain boundaries of the oxide scale; 3) the formation of a nano-grained Cr-depleted matrix zone under the oxide scale. These findings suggest that, for the structural alloys serviced at elevated temperatures, even a small amplitude motion with low normal stress against their contacting surface could significantly deteriorate their corrosion resistance. Hence, the service lifetime of the structural alloys needs to be reconsidered once friction is existing.

Abstract:Two MCrAlY coatings with the same nominal composition but different microstructures are prepared by magnetron sputtering (MS) and arc ion plating (AIP). Their oxidation at 1000 °C led to very different results. The relatively coarse grained AIP coating formed a duplex-layer scale, consisting of external θ-Al2O3 and internal α-Al2O3, with small amounts of NiCr2O4. Severe surface undulation was accompanied by the development of numerous cracks and voids. Aluminum depletion transformed the AIP coating from β to γ/γ′, causing volume shrinkage, promoting scale spallation and leading to disastrous oxidation. In contrast, the nanocrystalline MS coating was less degraded due to its columnar crystal structure and high-density of grain boundaries which provided rapid Al diffusion. Oxidation of this coating was characterized by a faster θ-Al2O3 to α-Al2O3 transformation and formation of an exclusive α-Al2O3 scale, protecting the surface .

Abstract:The influence of the nanocrystalline structure produced by severe plastic deformation (SPD) on the corrosion behavior of CoCrFeMnNi alloys with Cr contents ranging from 0 to 20 at.% was investigated in aqueous 0.5 M H2SO4 and 3.5% NaCl solutions. The resistance to general corrosion and pitting became higher in both the solutions, with higher passivation capability observed with increasing Cr content, and it is believed that the high corrosion resistance of CoCrFeMnNi alloys can be attributed to the incorporation of the Cr element. However, the impact of the nanocrystalline structure produced by SPD on the corrosion behavior was negligibly small. This is inconsistent with reports on nanocrystalline binary Fe–Cr alloys and stainless steels processed by SPD, where grain refinement by SPD results in higher corrosion resistance. The small change in the corrosion behavior with respect to grain refinement is discussed, based on the passivation process of Fe–Cr alloys and on the influence of the core effects of HEAs on the passivation process.

Abstract:The high strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance of alloys are highly desirable functional materials for biomedical applications. Multi-component alloys with a single face-centered-cubic (fcc) phase structure can provide superior ductility, while microstructures such as twins and stacking faults (SF) can be incorporated into the matrix to improve the strength of the alloy without damaging plasticity. Here, we have developed a single-fcc phase alloy Co36Fe36Cr18Ni10 with low stacking faults energy, which can effectively produce annealed twins by recrystallization annealing after cold rolling. The microstructure and mechanical properties of Co36Fe36Cr18Ni10 compared to commercial 316L alloy was methodically investigated by EBSD, TEM, and tensile testing. The results reveal that the Co36Fe36Cr18Ni10 alloy contains more twin boundaries and a high density of nano-twins and SFs in the microstructure, which effectively improve the strength of Co36Fe36Cr18Ni10 alloy meanwhile maintaining a similar ductility to commercial 316L. The corrosion behavior of Co36Fe36Cr18Ni10 and 316L in simulated body fluids has been investigated using electrochemical characterization, indicated that compared to 316L ss, pitting in Co36Fe36Cr18Ni10 alloys is easily inhibited and rapid re-passivation, meanwhile the twin boundaries were effective in weakening the formation of corrosion pits and impeded the expansion of corrosion crack. Compare the surfaces of the two alloys after passivation, apart from the Cr2O3/Cr(OH)3 contained in the passive film, the interactions between Co and other components in the passivation film produce more indissoluble substances with a lower enthalpy of formation that will enhance the passive film stability of Co36Fe36Cr18Ni10 alloy.

The Effect of Coating Grain Size on the Selective Oxidation Behaviour of Ni-Cr-Al Alloy

Abstract:A Ni-based superalloy composite (FTSC) was successfully prepared by spark plasma sintering with Ti3SiC2 (15 vol%) and FGH97 alloy powders as precursors. During sintering, the weakly bonded Si layers de-intercalate from Ti3SiC2 and the remaining TiC is eroded by the elements of the matrix, which promoted in-situ precipitation of MC and M6C carbides. MC with core-shell structure builds up a semi-coherent interface with the alloy matrix: (1¯11¯)γ/γ'‖(11¯1)MC with [110]γ/γ'‖[110]MC. The Zener pinning effect of ultra-fine duplex carbides results in refinement of alloy grains and notably improvement in mechanical strength. Comparing to the alloy FGH97, the composite FTSC possesses 55% higher microhardness, 100% higher compressive yield strength and 92% higher flexural strength. On the other hand, the refined grains ensured fast formation of a protective alumina scale at surface, which provides high oxidation resistance for the composite.
