Abstract:We demonstrate the in situ synthesis of carbon doped porous silicon (Si/C) nanocomposites by a simple thermal displacement process between Mg2Si and inorganic gas CO2 in one-step. Via the decomposition of Mg2Si, the reduction process occurred between Mg and CO2, leading the uniform doping of many distributed tiny carbon nanoparticles into Si. Meanwhile, the porous structure was formed after an acid treatment. When worked as anodes for lithium-ion batteries, the as-prepared s-porous Si/C nanocomposites exhibited good cycling stability and high-rate capability, which were superior to the porous Si and porous Si/C nanocomposites. It was revealed that the enhanced electrochemical properties could be ascribed to the novel porous structure and doped carbon nanoparticles that can buffer the volume expansion, as well as enhance the electronic conductivity of Si. The reaction mechanism was well investigated by studying the influence of reaction temperature and raw Mg2Si particle size on the morphology and component of the porous Si/C nanocomposites.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of uniform multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)@Si nanocomposites via the magnesiothermic reduction of pre-synthesized MWCNT@SiO2 nanocables. At first, the acid vapor steaming is used to treat the surface, which can facilitate the uniform deposition of SiO2 layer via the TEOS hydrolysis. Then, the uniform MWCNT@Si nanocomposites are obtained on the basis of MWCNT@SiO2 nanocables via a simple magnesiothermic reduction. When used as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the as-synthesized MWCNT@Si nanocomposites show high reversible capacity and good cycling performance, which is better than bulk Si and bare MWCNTs. It is believed that the good electrochemical performance can be attributed to the novel porous nanostructure and the introduction of MWCNTs that can buffer the volume change, maintain the electrical conductive network, and enhance the electronic conductivity and lithium-ion transport. Abstract:Carbon coated silicon nanosponges (Si@C NSs) used for anode in lithium ion batteries have been synthesized at a large scale via a templated magnesiothermic route, in which cheap ZnO nanoclusters and non-toxic glucose were employed to serve as sacrificial template and carbon source, respectively. The microstructure of Si@C Ns and its electrochemical performance in lithium ion batteries were investigated in detail. A reversible capacity with little fading after 500 cycles was obtained and the possible reasons for such superiority were discussed. Abstract:This work describes a promising strategy for large-scale fabrication of silicon (Si) nanotubes. The process began with preparation of silica nanotubes using rod-like NiN2H4 as a template and the resulting silica nanotubes were then converted to Si nanotubes by a thermal reduction process assisted with magnesium powder. The electrochemical properties of Si nanotubes were investigated as anode of lithium-ion batteries. It was demonstrated that the as-developed Si nanotubes showed significantly improved rate capability and long-term cycling performance compared with commercial silicon meshes.
Porous Si@C Coaxial Nanotubes: Layer-by-layer Assembly on ZnO Nanorod Templates and Application to Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Porous Si@C coaxial nanotubes were prepared by layer-by-layer assembly on ZnO nanorod templates and subsequent magnesiothermic reaction. ZnO nanorods have been firstly synthesized by a seed-assisted method, which can act as the optimum template to deposit SiO2 and carbon layers, respectively. After the magnesiothermic reaction, the compact SiO2 layer turns into a porous Si layer, leading to the Si@C coaxial nanotubes. The porous Si@C coaxial nanotubes demonstrate excellent cycling stability and high specific capacity as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which are extremely better than bare Si nanotubes and bulk Si@C nanocomposites. The outstanding electrochemical performance can be attributed to the fact that the coaxial nanotubular structures can provide enough space to accommodate the large volume changes and give more reaction sites for lithium ions, while the introduction of the carbon layer can enhance the electronic conductivity and stabilize the Si–electrolyte interface and nanotubular structure during the lithiation/delithiation process.
Electrochemical Conversion of Silica Nanoparticles to Silicon Nanotubes in Molten Salts: Implications for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery Anode

Abstract:Understanding the material formation mechanism is critical to guide the material synthesis and exploitation. Herein, we reveal a different conversion mechanism of SiO2 particles to Si nanotubes (SNTs) in the molten salt electrolysis. Unlike conventional strategies employing templates and/or catalysts, the one-step electrochemical synthesis is template- and catalyst-free, which process involves lamination, exfoliation, and reduction. Specifically, SiO2 particles are first converted into layer-structured CaSiO3, from which CaO and O2– are subsequently extracted, causing the collapse of the layer structure and forming SiOx (0 < x < 2) layers. The newly formed SiOx layers are finally deeply reduced into SNTs. Besides, the morphology of silicon-based nanostructures can be controlled via altering the applied voltage between a SiO2 cathode and a graphite anode. In addition, the electrolytic SNTs show enhanced lithium-storage performances, such as a high specific capacity (2485 mAh g–1 at 0.2 A g–1) and an excellent rate capability (1362 mAh g–1 at 5 A g–1), which is benefited from the tube structure that can buffer the volume variation of Si. Enhanced Electrochemical Performances of Silicon Nanotube Bundles Anode Coated with Graphene Layers

Abstract:Significant enhancement in electrochemical performances has been achieved in silicon nanotube bundles (Si NBs) via coating with graphene layers (denoted as Si NBs@G), which could be a promising anode material in Li-ions batteries. The synthesized Si NBs@G have tubular structure with a-diameter of around 200 nm and a thickness about 80 nm and the tube walls are composed of Si nanocrystals with a size about several nanometers. Galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements showed that the Si NBs@G displayed gradual increasing in capacity after first 100 cycles and finally reached a capacity of similar to 765 mAh g(-1) at 600 cycles, which was almost fivefold the capacity of the parent Si NBs without graphene coating. The graphene outerlayer is considered to serve as the mechanical protecting layer to enhance structural sustainability of Si NBs anode by forming stable solid electrolyte interface. In addition, the formation of Li-rich Li15Si4 crystallites also contributes to the capacity improvement. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Silicate-Mediated Electrolytic Silicon Nanotube from Silica in Molten Salts

Abstract:Electrochemical preparation/processing of functional silicon from abundant silica is an ideal protocol to promote sustainability of energy sectors. Such an imperative task is challenged by poor electrical conductivity of Si/SiO2 and inadequate mass diffusion of bulk silicon. Herein, a template-free and one-step preparation of silicon nanotubes (Si-NT) from electrochemical reduction of silica in molten salts is reported. An in situ oriented growth of silicate nanorods (NRs) from silica is clarified as the key step to direct a self-template evolution of Si-NT from silica. The silicate-mediated construction of Si-based NT is versatile and successfully extended to prepare Si-NT/graphite and Tix Siy -NT. Benefitting from fast longitudinal motorways for fast transport of electrons and ions along/inside NTs, an energy consumption 30% lower than industrial silicon production is achieved. When evaluated as anode of lithium ion battery, the Si-NT-based electrodes show outstanding initial Coulombic efficiency and high reversible capacity. The silicate-mediated construction of Si-based NT integrates straightforward preparation and intriguing functionality of Si-based materials, bridging a closed-loop Si-based energy infrastructure.
Assembled Graphene Nanotubes Decorated by Hierarchical MoS2 Structures: Enhanced Lithium Storage and in Situ TEM Lithiation Study

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has received considerable interest for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In this work, we demonstrate a material on synthesis of a unique hierarchical hollow structure by growing layered MoS2 nanosheets on assembled graphene nanotubes via a template-sacrificed approach (named as graphene@MoS2 nanotubes). As a proof of concept, the graphene@MoS2 nanotubes as the anode materials of lithium-ion batteries exhibit excellent cycling performance at 400 mA g(-1) up to 120 cycles without considerable capacity loss (830 mA h g(-1), with 96.5% capacity retention) and high rate behavior (502 mA h g(-1) at 2000 mA g(-1)), which is far beyond than that of the pure MoS2 nanosheets and even graphene@MoS2 nanosheets composites. Furthermore, combined with in-situ TEM lithiation experiments, we find a novel conversion reaction mechanism of MoS2 anodes that Li ions induce structural destruction in c-direction following a dynamic layer-by-layer dissociation with Mo/Li2S composites left, rather than well-known multistep reaction in bulk phase. The first-principles computations verify that the surfacial relaxation of Li2S to form an anti-fluorite structure on higher electric conductive LixMoS(2) surface is the primarily thermodynamic driving force for activating the above-mentioned reaction. These results are envisaged to be helpful for designing durable conversion-type MoS2 anodes by surface engineering, and the hierarchical tubular feature further points out a new protocol for graphene based hybrid anode for enhanced lithium-ion batteries.
Large-scale Synthesis of Silicon Arrays of Nanowire on Titanium Substrate As High-Performance Anode of Li-ion Batteries

Abstract:We have demonstrated large-scale synthesis of Si nanowire arrays (SiNA) on Ti substrate and their application as high-performance anode of Li-ion batteries. SiNA were controllably synthesized through hot-filament chemical vapour deposition (HFCVD) using Au films of different thickness as a catalyst. We found that the thickness of the Au film based catalysts played important role in controlling the morphology of Si nanostructures. The thick Au layer (e.g., 50nm) resulted in the formation of the SiNA, while the thin Au layer (e.g., 5nm) led to the disordered Si nanowires. The as-synthesized SiNA exhibited large reversible capacity (3600mAhg−1) and high initial Coulombic efficiency (86.4%), which is much better than the disordered Si nanowires. The good contact and adhesion of SiNA with current collectors, as well as excellent strain accommodation might be responsible for the enhanced performance as anode of Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:One of the weaknesses of silicon-based batteries is the rapid deterioration of the charge-storage capacity with increasing cycle numbers. Pure silicon anodes tend to suffer from poor cycling ability due to the pulverization of the crystal structure after repeated charge and discharge cycles. In this work, we present the synthesis of a hollow nanostructured SiO2 material for lithium-ion anode applications to counter this drawback. To improve the understanding of the synthesis route, the crucial synthesis step of removing the ZnO template core is shown using an in situ closed gas-cell sample holder for transmission electron microscopy. A direct visual observation of the removal of the ZnO template from the SiO2 shell is yet to be reported in the literature and is a critical step in understanding the mechanism by which these hollow nanostructures form from their core-shell precursors for future electrode material design. Using this unique technique, observation of dynamic phenomena at the individual particle scale is possible with simultaneous heating in a reactive gas environment. The electrochemical benefits of the hollow morphology are demonstrated with exceptional cycling performance, with capacity increasing with subsequent charge-discharge cycles. This demonstrates the criticality of nanostructured battery materials for the development of next-generation Li+-ion batteries.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) nanoparticles hold considerable potential for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their extraordinarily high capacity and good endurance of volume expansion. Although many synthesis techniques have been established to produce homogeneous Si nanoparticles, such as laser pyrolysis, plasma treatment and electrochemical etching, scaling up their production remains a significant challenge due to intricate procedures, stringent conditions, or expensive precursors involved in above processes. In this study, we introduce a modified alumino-reduction of silica in molten salts to synthesize sub-50 nm Si nanoparticles. Notably, this method operates under an ambient atmosphere and requires only a mild temperature range of 250-300°C. Thanks to sufficient mass transport by rigorous stirring, the resulting nanoparticles demonstrate a uniform size distribution. The minuscule size and even distribution enable Si-nanoparticles-based anode to exhibit remarkable capacity and outstanding cycling stability. Specifically, a high reversible capacity of 1120.2 mA h g −1 is achieved after 500 cycles at 4 A g −1 . We further demonstrate that these Si nanoparticles can be imbedded in MXene conductive network to form the microspheres to enhance their rate-performance. Overall, this study provides a convenient scalable synthetic route for preparing Si nanoparticles for high-performance LIBs application.

Self‐Assembly of Silicon Nanotubes Driven by a Biphasic Transition from the Natural Mineral Montmorillonite in Molten Salt Electrolysis

Abstract:A cost‐effective method for self‐assembly of silicon nanotubes has been developed using natural minerals by means of a biphasic conversion process, which does not require templates and catalysts. Meanwhile, the solution reveals the processes of "solid state reduction" during template formation and "dissolution deposition" during the generation of hollow structures. Silicon nanotubes (SNTs) have been considered as promising anode materials for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). However, the reported strategies for preparing SNTs generally have special requirements for either expensive templates or complex catalysts. It is necessary to explore a cost‐effective and efficient approach for the preparation of high‐performance SNTs. In this work, a biphasic transformation strategy involving "solid‐state reduction" and "dissolution‐deposition" in molten salts is developed to prepare SNTs using montmorillonite as a precursor. The rod‐like intermediate of silicon‐aluminum‐calcium is initially reduced in solid state, which then triggers the continuous dissolution and deposition of calcium silicate in the inner space of the intermediate to form a hollow structure during the subsequent reduction process. The transition from solid to liquid is crucial for improving the kinetics of deoxygenation and induces the self‐assembly of SNTs during electrolysis. When the obtained SNTs is used as anode materials for LIBs, they exhibit a high capacity of 2791 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1, excellent rate capability of 1427 mA h g−1 at 2 A g−1, and stable cycling performance with a capacity of 2045 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at 0.5 A g−1. This work provides a self‐assembling, controllable, and cost‐effective approach for fabricating SNTs.

Controllable synthesis of one-dimensional silicon nanostructures based on the dual effects of electro-deoxidation and the Kirkendall effect

Abstract:In this study, we successfully synthesized silicon nanotubes (Si-NTs) and silicon nanowires (Si-NWs) in a controllable manner using a catalyst- and template-free method through the direct electrolysis of SiO 2 in a molten CaCl 2 -CaO system, while also proposing a novel formation mechanism for Si-NTs. Si-NWs are formed through electro-deoxidation when the cell voltage is within the range of CaO decomposition voltage and SiO 2 decomposition voltage. By subsequently adjusting the voltage to a value between the decomposition potentials of CaCl 2 and CaO, in-situ electro-deoxidation of CaO takes place on the surface of the synthesized Si-NWs, leading to the formation of a Ca layer. The formation of Ca-Si diffusion couple leads to the creation of vacancies within the Si-NWs, as the outward diffusion rate of Si exceeds the inward diffusion rate of Ca. These differential diffusion rates between Si and Ca in a diffusion couple exhibit an analogy to the Kirkendall effect. These vacancies gradually accumulate and merge, forming large voids, which ultimately result in the formation of hollow SiCa-NTs. Through a subsequent dealloying process, the removal of the embedded calcium leads to the formation of Si-NTs. Following the application of a carbon coating, the Si-NTs@C composite showcases a high initial discharge capacity of 3211 mAh·g −1 at 1.5 A·g −1 and exhibits exceptional long-term cycling stability, maintaining a capacity of 977 mAh·g −1 after 2000 cycles at 3.0 A·g −1 .

Electrochemical Synthesis of Multidimensional Nanostructured Silicon as a Negative Electrode Material for Lithium-Ion Battery

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is a promising negative electrode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), but the poor cycling stability hinders their practical application. Developing favorable Si nanomaterials is expected to improve their cyclability. Herein, a controllable and facile electrolysis route to prepare Si nanotubes (SNTs), Si nanowires (SNWs), and Si nanoparticles (SNPs) from halloysite clay (Al2(OH)4Si2O5·nH2O) is developed. It is found that HCl-etching temperature and electrolysis potential play key roles in controlling the morphologies of Si. After being HCl-etched at 80 or 90 °C, halloysite clay can be reduced into Si nanotubes at a suitable potential of -1.45 V or Si nanowires at a wide potential from -1.40 to -1.60 V, respectively, while Si nanoparticles can be only obtained at a more negative potential of -1.60 V without HCl-etching. The different morphologies of Si are associated with the change of reduction kinetics after HCl-etching. Besides, when serving as negative electrode materials for LIBs, Si nanotubes exhibit better Li storage performance than Si nanoparticles and Si nanowires, showing a capacity of 3044 mAh g-1 at 0.20 A g-1 and 1033 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 1 A g-1. This work provides a controllable approach for the synthesis of Si nanomaterials for LIBs.

Abstract:Silicon is considered as an ideal anode material for the next generation of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its high specific capacity, low lithiation potential, and high natural abundance. However, its potential application is greatly restricted by poor electrical conductivity and large volume expansion during lithiation/delithiation processes. Herein, a novel solid-state reaction route is developed to synthesize a silicon/carbon nanotubes/carbon (Si/CNTs/C) composite by directly reacting magnesium silicide (Mg2Si) with lithium carbonate (Li2CO3). This method realizes synchronous formation of Si, CNTs, and amorphous carbon with a good interfacial configuration. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals that MgO may be responsible for the in situ growth of CNTs during the chemical reaction process. The crystalline Si particles are encapsulated by CNTs and the amorphous carbon matrix, which not only accommodates the volume expansion of Si but also enhances the integral electronic conductivity. Consequently, the Si/CNTs/C composite exhibits a high reversible capacity (702 mA h g–1 at 0.2 A g–1), excellent rate performance (420 mA h g–1 at 5 A g–1), and long cycling life (over 1500 cycles) when used as an anode for LIBs. Notably, this research might provide a new strategy for large-scale synthesis and utilization of Si/C composites in high-performance LIBs.

Abstract:In this work, nanostructured, monodisperse Si spheres have been prepared by a facile, controllable magnesiothermic reduction method using monodisperse SiO2 spheres as the precursor. The reaction conditions for magnesiothermic reduction have been optimized, yielding desired product and byproduct. Carbon coating on Si nanocrystals is performed by an easy chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The effect of carbon coating on electrochemical performance of Si is investigated. The results show that the original monodisperse spheric morphology of SiO2 can be preserved during magnesiothermic reduction and the cycling stability of Si can be enhanced by carbon coating. This work provides a facile, scalable method to synthesize nanostructured Si and Si/C composites. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Morphology-Controlled Synthesis of Sno2 Nanotubes by Using 1d Silica Mesostructures As Sacrificial Templates and Their Applications in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:SnO(2) nanotubes with controllable morphologies are successfully synthesized by using a variety of one-dimensional (1D) silica mesostructures as effective sacrificial templates. Firstly, 1D silica mesostructures with different morphologies, such as chiral nanorods, nonchiral nanofibers, and helical nanotubes, are readily synthesized in aqueous solution by using the triblock copolymer Pluronic F127 and the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as binary templates. Subsequently, the obtained 1D silica mesostructures are used as sacrificial templates to synthesize SnO(2) nanotubes with preserved morphologies via a simple hydrothermal route, resulting in the formation of well-defined SnO(2) nanotubes with different lengths and unique helical SnO(2) nanotubes with a wealth of conformations. It is revealed that both of the short and long SnO(2) nanotubes showed much better performance as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries than normal SnO(2) nanopowders, which might be related to the hollow structure of the nanotubes that could alleviate the volume changes and mechanical stress during charging/discharging cycling. Moreover, the capacity and cycling performance of short nanotubes, which showed a specific discharge capacity of 468 mAh g(-1) after 30 cycles, are considerably better than those of long nanotubes because of the more robust structure of the short nanotubes.

Abstract:Silicon has great potential as an anode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). This work reports a facile, high-yield, and scalable approach to prepare nanoporous silicon, in which commercial magnesium silicide (Mg 2 Si) reacted with the acidic ionic liquid at 100 °C and ambient pressure. The obtained silicon consists of a crystalline, porous structure with a BET surface area of 450 m 2 /g and pore size of 1.27 nm. When coated with the nitrogen-doped carbon layer and applied as LIB anode, the obtained nanoporous silicon-carbon composites exhibit a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 72.9% and possess a specific capacity of 1000 mA h g −1 at 1 A g −1 after 100 cycles. This preparation method does not involve high temperature and pressure vessels and can be easily applied for mass production of nanoporous silicon materials for lithium-ion battery or for other applications.
