Abstract:A compact, efficient optical parametric oscillator (OPO) for the visible to near-infrared region based on periodically poled stoichiometric lithium tantalate pumped by a frequency-doubled multikilohertz Q-switched Nd:YAG laser is demonstrated. Up to 61% photon conversion with a 71% slope efficiency for photon conversion from 532 nm to the signal radiation was measured. We observed that the efficient conversion diminished the potential for photorefractive damage induced by the 532 nm radiation in the crystal and made sustained operation of the OPO device possible.

Abstract:A high-power 532 nm-pumped multikilohertz nanosecond optical parametric oscillator using a periodically poled 1.0 mol. % MgO-doped stoichiometric lithium tantalate crystal that could be operated from room temperature to 200 degrees C without damage is reported. A broad continuous tuning range from 855 to 1410 nM was achieved within a single domain period. Efficient operation of high peak power and watt level average power with a power conversion of 62.5% was measured. These results show that a high-resolution high average power visible tunable source can be realized. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:We report a subnanosecond mid-IR tunable optical parametric oscillator based on periodically poled stoichiometric lithium tantalate (PPSLT), pumped by an amplified single frequency microchip laser at 1064 nm at a repetition rate of 0.5 kHz. Using a 20 mm long PPSLT crystal polled with three different domain periods (30.2, 30.3, and 30.4 μm) and changing the temperature of the crystal from 20°C to 265°C, we achieved wavelength tuning between 2990 and 3500 nm. The high nonlinearity of the used medium and the large aperture (3.2 mm) ensure maximum idler output energy of ~2 mJ in the whole tuning range, corresponding to 18% idler conversion efficiency and more than 1 W of average power. 270 ps idler pulse durations were obtained as a result of the 818 ps pulse duration of the pump.

Abstract:We demonstrate broadband tuning visible light generation based on a multi-channel quasi-periodically poled LiTaO3 crystal, in which a quasi-phase matched optical parametric generation process and a quasi-phase matched sum-frequency mixing process were achieved simultaneously. The conversion characters on spectrum and energy were studied by using a nanosecond pulse laser at 1.064μm as pump light. We could tune the visible light over ~26nm by means of changing the crystal's channel and temperature. The ratio of the output wavelength variation to that of temperature was ~0.07nm/°C. The single-pass slope efficiency was 6.3% with the maximum output energy of 25μJ.

Abstract:We have achieved broadband parametric generation by using a quasi-periodically poled LiTaO(3) crystal as frequency converter. Tuning wavelength rang from 0.609 microm to 5.208 microm, which covered three quasi-phase-matching processes, was obtained by means of changing the pump wavelength from 0.530 microm to 1.184 microm. The experiment results are in good agreement with theory. The maximum conversion efficiency is 62% with a 10 Hz-5 ns pump source, at the average pump power of 0.5 mW. Our results exhibit a possible application of quasi-periodic superlattice in laser technology.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high efficiency mid-infrared laser source based on optical parametric oscillator (OPO) assisted by an intracavity optical parametric amplification (OPA). The OPA-assisted-OPO scheme was realized in one piece of commensurable dual-periodic superlattice in which the signal light generated from the OPO process serves as the pump light for the OPA process. A maximum output power of 508 mW at 3.92 μm was achieved under a pump power of 2.85 W at 1.064 μm. The pump-to-idler conversion efficiency is 17.8% and the slope efficiency is 23.8%, and the enhancements of them are 58.9% and 67.6%, respectively, comparing with the standard OPO scheme.

Abstract:This paper reports on a high-repetition-rate dual signal-wave (DSW) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating at the 1.5μm band with tunable wavelength intervals from 2.5nm to 69.1nm. Two periodically poled crystals, a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with multiple gratings and a single grating MgO-doped PPLN (PPMgOLN), are cascaded in the same OPO cavity to generate dual signal-waves by using quasi-phase-matched (QPM) technique. The pump source was a Q-switched diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser operating at 50kHz. At an incident pump power of 3W, an average output power of 169.6mW at 1489.2nm and 1558.3nm has been achieved.

Abstract:We report in this work a continuous wave (CW) narrowband 589 nm light generation for the purpose of laser guide assisted adaptive optics. A 39 mm long 1 mm thick periodically poled near stoichiometric LiTaO 3 crystal with duty cycle near 50% was fabricated using electrical poling at room temperature and pumped by a Raman fiber amplifier. We tested two temperature control ovens, and a maximum conversion efficiency of about 14.3%, corresponding to 4 W of yellow light with 28 W of fundamental power, and bandwidth less than 0.18 GHz was achieved.

Abstract:We report on a compact high average power optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by an all-solid-state nanosecond 532 nm laser. Based on the merit of non-critically phase-matched crystal without walk-off effect, a 50-mm-long LiB3O5 (LBO) crystal is used as OPO nonlinear crystal to enhance the conversion efficiency and increase the output power. With the available mirror set, continuous tuning from 778 to 1036 nm for signal wave is obtained by changing LBO phase-matching temperature. The maximum average power of signal output is up to 9.4 W at 900 nm for pump power of 18 W inside the LBO crystal, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 52% only for the signal output. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest signal average power generated by nanosecond OPO in single bulk LBO.

Abstract:We report a compact and viable source of high-efficiency, high-repetition-rate, temperature-tuning, mid-IR optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on periodically poled MgO-doped lithium niobate (PPMgOLN) pumped by a homemade high power AOM Q-switched Nd:YVO 4 laser centered at 1.064 μm. With an optimal plane-concave resonator configuration, average output power of 5.7 W at 2.73 μm was obtained when the pump power was 25 W at the repetition rate of 80 kHz. The conversion efficiency from the 1.064 μm laser to the 2.73 μm laser was 22.8%. Temperature tuning of the OPO yielded a signal wavelength range from 1.67 to 1.75 μm and an idler wavelength in the range of 2.72 to 2.92 μm.

Abstract:A 1.8 mu m optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on a noncritically phase-matched KTiOPO4 crystal is demonstrated. OPO and stimulated Raman scattering techniques are successfully combined in an acousto-optically Q-switched Nd:YAG/SrWO4 Raman laser. The device efficiently realizes three steps of conversion: from a laser diode wavelength of 808 nm to the fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm; next, to the Stokes wavelength of 1180 nm; and finally to the OPO signal wavelength of 1810 nm. With an incident diode power of 7.2 W and a pulse repetition rate of 15 kHz, an average signal power of 485 mW is obtained with a diode-to-signal conversion efficiency of 6.75%. The beam quality factors (M-2) of the signal wave in both horizontal and vertical directions are measured to be 1.7 +/- 0.2. The numerical output power results of the system, the thermal lensing, and the stability parameter of the cavity are also discussed. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We demonstrate a tunable optical parametric oscillator in a periodically poled congruently grown lithium tantalite whispering gallery mode resonator. The resonator is mechanically polished to millimeter size, and the quality factor is approximately 107 at 1064 nm. Our experiments show that this kind of resonator is capable of reaching a very low threshold and having a wide tuning range. Combined with its narrow resonant linewidth, it is potentially used as a compact, widely tunable, and narrow-linewidth infrared to mid-infrared laser source.
A High-Power Continuous-Wave Mid-Infrared Optical Parametric Oscillator Module

Abstract:We demonstrate here a compact optical parametric oscillator module for mid-infrared generation via nonlinear frequency conversion. This module weighs only 2.5 kg and fits within a small volume of 220 x 60 x 55 mm(3). The module can be easily aligned to various pump laser sources, and here we use a 50 W ytterbium (Yb)-doped fiber laser as an example. With a two-channel MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate crystal (MgO:PPLN), our module covers a tuning range of 2416.17-2932.25 nm and 3142.18-3452.15 nm. The highest output power exceeds 10.4 W at 2.7 mu m, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 24%. The measured power stability is 2.13% Root Meat Square (RMS) for a 10 h duration under outdoor conditions.

Abstract:A high power, high-conversion-efficiency, and tunable continuous-wave external cavity pump singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) was proposed in this article. This OPO was based on multi-grating MgO-doped stoichiometric periodically poled LiTaO3 (MgO:sPPLT) and pumped with 532 nm continuous wave fiber laser. The MgO:sPPLT-OPO could provide near-infrared radiation across 821-879 nm in the signal and 1352-1515 nm in the idler within four grating periods of 8.3-8.6 mu m. When the pump power was 5.4 W, the maximum pump-to-signal conversion efficiency could reach 57.5% at 821 nm. The output power extended to 5.9 W in each period when the pump power reaches 13.6 W.

Abstract:We report a novel temperature insensitive, APMgLN-based, high-power cascaded optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by an Ytterbium-doped fiber laser. A monolithic APMgLN crystal was designed to compensate the phase mismatches for the nonlinear conversions from the pump to the idler and the primary signal to the idler simultaneously in a wide temperature range. Efficient parametric conversion with pump-to-idler conversion efficiency over 15% and slope efficiency higher than 20% was realized from 25 °C to 55 °C. The idler wavelength was down-shifted from 3.82 μm to 3.78 μm accordingly during the temperature rise. The highest idler power of 4.1 W at 3.8 μm under the pump power of 26.5 W was recorded which was improved by ~32% in pump-to-idler conversion efficiency when compared with the PPMgLN-based conventional OPO, in which the highest idler output power was 3.1W under the same pump and thermal condition.

Abstract:The evolution versus pump power of the spectrum of a singly resonant optical parametric oscillator based on an MgO-doped periodically poled stoichiometric lithium tantalate crystal is observed. The onset of cascade Raman lasing due to stimulated Raman scattering in the nonlinear crystal is analyzed. Spurious frequency doubling and sum-frequency generation phenomena are observed and understood. A strong reduction of the intracavity Raman scattering is obtained by a careful adjustment of the cavity losses.
