Abstract:A compact, efficient optical parametric oscillator (OPO) for the visible to near-infrared region based on periodically poled stoichiometric lithium tantalate pumped by a frequency-doubled multikilohertz Q-switched Nd:YAG laser is demonstrated. Up to 61% photon conversion with a 71% slope efficiency for photon conversion from 532 nm to the signal radiation was measured. We observed that the efficient conversion diminished the potential for photorefractive damage induced by the 532 nm radiation in the crystal and made sustained operation of the OPO device possible.

Abstract:We report a subnanosecond mid-IR tunable optical parametric oscillator based on periodically poled stoichiometric lithium tantalate (PPSLT), pumped by an amplified single frequency microchip laser at 1064 nm at a repetition rate of 0.5 kHz. Using a 20 mm long PPSLT crystal polled with three different domain periods (30.2, 30.3, and 30.4 μm) and changing the temperature of the crystal from 20°C to 265°C, we achieved wavelength tuning between 2990 and 3500 nm. The high nonlinearity of the used medium and the large aperture (3.2 mm) ensure maximum idler output energy of ~2 mJ in the whole tuning range, corresponding to 18% idler conversion efficiency and more than 1 W of average power. 270 ps idler pulse durations were obtained as a result of the 818 ps pulse duration of the pump.

Abstract:This paper reports on a high-repetition-rate dual signal-wave (DSW) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating at the 1.5μm band with tunable wavelength intervals from 2.5nm to 69.1nm. Two periodically poled crystals, a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with multiple gratings and a single grating MgO-doped PPLN (PPMgOLN), are cascaded in the same OPO cavity to generate dual signal-waves by using quasi-phase-matched (QPM) technique. The pump source was a Q-switched diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser operating at 50kHz. At an incident pump power of 3W, an average output power of 169.6mW at 1489.2nm and 1558.3nm has been achieved.

Abstract:A high-power 532 nm-pumped multikilohertz nanosecond optical parametric oscillator using a periodically poled 1.0 mol. % MgO-doped stoichiometric lithium tantalate crystal that could be operated from room temperature to 200 degrees C without damage is reported. A broad continuous tuning range from 855 to 1410 nM was achieved within a single domain period. Efficient operation of high peak power and watt level average power with a power conversion of 62.5% was measured. These results show that a high-resolution high average power visible tunable source can be realized. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high efficiency mid-infrared laser source based on optical parametric oscillator (OPO) assisted by an intracavity optical parametric amplification (OPA). The OPA-assisted-OPO scheme was realized in one piece of commensurable dual-periodic superlattice in which the signal light generated from the OPO process serves as the pump light for the OPA process. A maximum output power of 508 mW at 3.92 μm was achieved under a pump power of 2.85 W at 1.064 μm. The pump-to-idler conversion efficiency is 17.8% and the slope efficiency is 23.8%, and the enhancements of them are 58.9% and 67.6%, respectively, comparing with the standard OPO scheme.

Abstract:We report an efficiency-enhanced mid-infrared generation via optical parametric down conversion. A tandem periodically-poled MgO-doped stoichiometric lithium tantalate crystal is used to realize on-chip generation and amplification of mid-infrared radiation inside an optical parametric oscillator cavity. We achieved 21.2% conversion efficiency (24% slope efficiency), which is among the highest efficiencies for the pump-to-mid-infrared conversion, with 1064 nm Nd class laser pump. Abstract:We report a compact and viable source of high-efficiency, high-repetition-rate, temperature-tuning, mid-IR optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on periodically poled MgO-doped lithium niobate (PPMgOLN) pumped by a homemade high power AOM Q-switched Nd:YVO 4 laser centered at 1.064 μm. With an optimal plane-concave resonator configuration, average output power of 5.7 W at 2.73 μm was obtained when the pump power was 25 W at the repetition rate of 80 kHz. The conversion efficiency from the 1.064 μm laser to the 2.73 μm laser was 22.8%. Temperature tuning of the OPO yielded a signal wavelength range from 1.67 to 1.75 μm and an idler wavelength in the range of 2.72 to 2.92 μm.

Abstract:A high brightness hundred picosecond (ps) mid-infrared tunable optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on MgO doped periodically poled lithium niobate (MgO: PPLN) was demonstrated. The pumping source was provided by a cascade amplified microchip laser at 10 kHz with pulse width of 466 ps. The idler wavelength tuning from 2.8 to 4.3 μm was achieved by the combination of period and temperature tuning. The maximum idler average output power was 262 mW at 2.8 μm with a pulse duration of 252 ps, corresponding to 6.7% conversion efficiency. The average beam quality factor was measured to be M 2 = 2.46, resulting in a brightness value of 0.55 MW sr cm −2 . Pulse width of 209 ps at 4.3 μm, which was the shortest pulse width from a short cavity OPO to our best knowledge.

Abstract:The optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on the periodically poled lithium tantalate (PPLT) crystal (40 mm×5 mm×1 mm) is fabricated. The OPO is pumped by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser working at 1.064 μm. Abstract:A compact source of high-repetition-rate, high-efficiency, mid-infrared optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on periodically poled MgO-doped lithium niobate (PPMgOLN) was reported. To ensure high conversion efficiency at high repetition rate, a high beam quality and high peak power Q-switched pump source was developed specially. The performances at different repetition rates were compared and average output power of 8.7 W at 3.8 μm was obtained when the pump power was 48 W at the repetition rate of 120 kHz with an optimal plane-concave resonator configuration. The conversion efficiency from the 1.06 μm laser to the 3.8 μm laser was 18.1%.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated an efficient optical parametric oscillator (OPO) with high parametric conversion from 1.0645 to 3.8 μm. An aperiodically poled magnesium oxide doped lithium niobate wafer was designed and fabricated as the nonlinear crystal of the OPO. A linearly polarized acousto-optic Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser was used as the pump source. High pump-to-idler conversion efficiency of 18.5% was achieved with a slope efficiency of up to 21.5%. When compared with a periodically poled channel fabricated on the same wafer, under the condition of output coupler optimized for the periodically poled lithium niobate based OPO, an improvement of slope efficiency by 28.3% from 15.2% to 19.5% and total efficiency by 12.5% from 13.6% to 15.3% under the highest pump power of 11 W was realized for the pump-to-idler conversion.

Abstract:A high efficiency, continuous-wave, narrow linewidth, pump-enhanced optical parametric oscillator (OPO) at 3.8 µm was demonstrated, which was pumped by a 1064 nm fiber laser with a linewidth of 18 kHz. The low frequency modulation locking technique was employed to stabilize the output power. The wavelengths of signal and idler were 1475.5 nm and 3819.9 nm at 25 °C, respectively. The pump-enhanced structure was applied, leading to a maximum quantum efficiency of over 60% with pump power of 3 W. The maximum output power of idler light is 1.8 W with a linewidth of 363 kHz. The excellent tuning performance of the OPO was also demonstrated. In order to avoid mode-splitting and decrease of pump enhancing factor due to feedback light in the cavity, the crystal was placed obliquely to the pump beam and the maximum output power was increased by 19%. At the maximum output power of idler light, the M2 factors in the x and y directions were 1.30 and 1.33, respectively.

Abstract:We demonstrate broadband tuning visible light generation based on a multi-channel quasi-periodically poled LiTaO3 crystal, in which a quasi-phase matched optical parametric generation process and a quasi-phase matched sum-frequency mixing process were achieved simultaneously. The conversion characters on spectrum and energy were studied by using a nanosecond pulse laser at 1.064μm as pump light. We could tune the visible light over ~26nm by means of changing the crystal's channel and temperature. The ratio of the output wavelength variation to that of temperature was ~0.07nm/°C. The single-pass slope efficiency was 6.3% with the maximum output energy of 25μJ.

Abstract:We present a hybrid waveguide-fiber optical parametric oscillator (OPO) exploiting degenerate four-wave mixing in tantalum pentoxide. The OPO, pumped with ultrashort pulses at 1.55 $\mu$m wavelength, generated tunable idler pulses with up to 4.1 pJ energy tunable between 1.63 $\mu$m and 1.68 $\mu$m center wavelength. An upper bound for the total tolerable cavity loss of 32 dB was found, rendering a chip-integrated OPO feasible as a compact and robust light source.

Abstract:We have experimentally demonstrated a periodically poled magnesium-oxide-doped lithium niobate (PPMgLN)-based, fiber-laser-pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO) generating idler wavelength of 3.82 μm. The pump fiber laser was constructed with a linearly polarized, semi-fiber-coupled acousto-optic Q-switched fiber oscillator and a polarization-maintaining fiber amplifier with pulse duration of 190 ns at the highest output power. The OPO was specifically configured in single-pass, singly resonant linear cavity structure to avoid the damage risk of the pump fiber laser, which is always a serious issue in the fiber-laser-pumped, double-pass, singly oscillating structured OPOs. Under the highest pump power of 25 W, an idler average output power of 3.27 W with one-hour peak-to-peak instability of 5.2% was obtained. The measured M2 factors were 1.98 and 1.44 for horizontal and vertical axis, respectively. The high power stability and good beam quality demonstrated the suitability of such technology for practical application.

Abstract:A high power, high-conversion-efficiency, and tunable continuous-wave external cavity pump singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) was proposed in this article. This OPO was based on multi-grating MgO-doped stoichiometric periodically poled LiTaO3 (MgO:sPPLT) and pumped with 532 nm continuous wave fiber laser. The MgO:sPPLT-OPO could provide near-infrared radiation across 821-879 nm in the signal and 1352-1515 nm in the idler within four grating periods of 8.3-8.6 mu m. When the pump power was 5.4 W, the maximum pump-to-signal conversion efficiency could reach 57.5% at 821 nm. The output power extended to 5.9 W in each period when the pump power reaches 13.6 W.
