Abstract:We studied low index polymer photonic crystals that allow self-guided light propagation based on their engineered dispersion properties. We developed a novel and versatile fabrication approach that can fabricate three-dimensional photonic crystals using photosensitive polymers.

Abstract:Photonic crystals have attracted much attention from researchers because of the control over the propagation and emission of light and particular optical properties. In this paper, we reported on the design, fabrication and test of a two-dimensional polymer photonic crystal laser. First of all, a two-dimensional polymer photonic crystal laser with a triangle-lattice structure was described. Rhodamine 6G doped in PMMA was chosen as the gain material. Then, plane wave method based on the Maxwell equations was utilized to calculate the distribution of the photonic band gap. We calculated the band structure of a triangle lattice photonic crystal with a low refractive index. High resolution electron beam lithography combined with electroplating was used to fabricate the silicon nitride mask. A high aspect ratio two-dimensional photonic crystal laser was fabricated by X-ray lithography in one-step process to overcome the limitation of the thickness by the conventional methods to realize a real two-dimensional laser. Meanwhile, processes of sample preparations and fabrication were optimized in order to avoid the oxidation of the gain material and reduce the diffraction effect on the structures.

Abstract:Monodisperse polymer particles of the core–shell type were produced using sequential emulsion and seed emulsion polymerization methods. The structure of the surface layer of the particles was studied using scanning electron microscopy. It has been established that sequential emulsion polymerization makes it possible to obtain particles with the lowest dispersity values of their diameter. The introduction of methyl methacrylate both at the stage of core synthesis and during the formation of the shell leads to the formation of spherical particles with a smooth surface layer. Based on such particles, films with pronounced properties of photonic crystals were obtained, and their Bragg reflection spectra in polarized light were studied.

Abstract:Photonic crystal structures attract much interest, and considerable efforts have been devoted toward hydrogel-based photonic crystal responsive materials. However, the mechanical strength of such composite films is still not desirable. Here, we present a light diffracting hydrogel film with enhanced mechanical property by embedding a self-assembled polystyrene array in a binary hydrogel via a facile photopolymerization technique, which enables the convenient fabrication and shaping of robust photonic sensing films.

Abstract:We present and experimentally validate self-collimation in planar photonic crystals as a new means of achieving structureless confinement of light in optical devices. We demonstrate the ability to arbitrarily guide and route light by exploiting the dispersive characteristics of the photonic crystal. Propagation loss as low as 2.17 dB/mm is measured, and the experimental validation of routing structures are presented.

Abstract:We report a novel photo-polymerization technique of well- defined three-dimensional layer-by-layer structures by two- photon absorption (TPA in resins. By changing the structural parameters such as the rod diameter, pitch )intra-rod distance in plane) and angular orientation between neighbor planes different lattice types can be accomplished. This enables a systematic investigation of optical properties of photonic crystals (PhCs) made by TPA photo-polymerization. The solidified skeleton of PhC can be utilized as a mold to infiltrate solidifiable dye. Selective removal of the solidified resin can yield in a reverse PhC structures. When the defect-layer(s) are introduced into PhC during fabrication the PhC may act as a high-quality microcavity. A defect mode has been observed for the first time in thus-fabricated structures. Laser- microexplosion fabrication is another promising technique for the PhC and optical memory applications. TO achieve an opening of a full-bandgap the media of high dielectric constant is of request (a high dielectric contrast is necessary).
Modeling and Characterization of Tunable Photonic Crystal Waveguides Based on Two-Dimensional Periodic Arrays of Silicon Pillars

Abstract:Highly dense two-dimensional periodic arrays of nano-scaled silicon pillars present the capacity for acting as photonic crystals which can mould, manipulate and guide light. We demonstrate finite element modelling of silicon pillars based photonic crystals and their effective use in applications like waveguides, multiplexers and switches. The optical wave propagation through these structures was thoroughly simulated and analysed, confirming their high efficiency.Later the fabrication of highly periodic two-dimensional arrays of silicon pillars through the process of etching is also explained. High quality of fabricated silicon pillars is displayed in various scanning electron microscope images. The arrays with pillar radius of 50 nm and lattice constant of 400 nm were successfully utilised as optical waveguides with sharp turns. The experimental results are presented showing a good match with the simulation band gap results. Finally we also present the concept of utilising liquid crystals as an anisotropic medium around the silicon nano-pillars to establish tuneable photonic crystals waveguides. The cell geometry for such a hybrid device is suggested in which by application of voltage the dielectric constant of liquid crystals can be controlled and essentially the waveguides can be tuned.

Abstract:As an organic optical fiber with a diameter comparable to or less than the wavelength of light, polymer nanofibers have been attracting increasing attention as a platform for manipulating light at the nanoscale. A variety of applications for polymer optical nanofibers, including waveguides, light sources and sensors, have been reported in recent years. In this article, the recent progress in the field of polymer optical nanofibers is reviewed in terms of their fabrication, characterization and applications. In particular, we focus on functionalized polymer nanofibers doped with functional materials, such as dye molecules, noble metal nanoparticles, quantum dots and rare earth ions, which greatly expand their capabilities of generating, propagating, converting and modulating light at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Two-photon polymerization of photosensitive materials has emerged as a very promising technique for the fabrication of photonic crystals and devices. We present our investigations into the structuring by two-photon polymerization of a new class of photosensitive sol-gel composites exhibiting ultra-low shrinkage. We particularly focus on two composites, the first containing a zirconium alkoxide and the second a nonlinear optical chromophore. The three-dimensional photonic crystal structures fabricated using these materials demonstrate high resolution and clear bandstops in the near IR region.

Abstract:Lasers have been established as a unique nanoprocessing tool due to its intrinsic three-dimensional (3D) fabrication capability and the excellent compatibility to various functional materials. Here we report two methods that have been proved particularly promising for tailoring 3D photonic crystals (PhCs): pinpoint writing via two-photon photopolymerization and multibeam interferential patterning. In the two-photon fabrication, a finely quantified pixel writing scheme and a method of pre-compensation to the shrinkage induced by polymerization enable high-reproducibility and high-fidelity prototyping; well-defined diamond-lattice PhCs prove the arbitrary 3D processing capability of the two-photon technology. In the interference patterning method, we proposed and utilized a two-step exposure approach, which not only increases the number of achievable lattice types, but also expands the freedom in tuning lattice constant.
Photonic Crystal Structures with Submicrometer Spatial Resolution Achieved by High-Power Femtosecond Laser-Induced Photopolymerization

Abstract:We demonstrate in this paper a fabrication of three-dimensional microstructures using photopolymerization of resin by two-photon absorption. When a tightly focused laser beam was scanned in a light-curling liquid, solidified rods were formed following the trace of the scanning. If the solidification was arranged to occur along the frame of a microstructure, a designed spatial pattern would be transformed into material object. Due to a quadratic dependence of photopolymerization rate on the laser pulse energy, the size of solidified voxels was controlled down to submicrometer order. Infrared transmission measurement exhibited pronounced band gap effects from thus-fabricated photonic crystal structures.

Abstract:The orientation of the crystallographic direction of a selforganized 3D soft lattice is “tamed” and tailored facilely by light irradiation, as described by Yan-Qing Lu, Guoqiang Li, Quan Li, and co-workers in article number 1703165. The designed photoalignment technique enables diverse micropatterning of the crystallographic direction of the cubic superstructure that can be readily erased and rewritten ondemand by light. The potential of the stimuli-responsive micropatterns is demonstrated in advanced reflective photonic applications.

Abstract:The authors experimentally demonstrate an approach to fabricating three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals (PCs) by using the Talbot self-imaging effect. A two-dimensional (2D) chess-board grating is employed to generate a 3D optical field pattern based on the Talbot effect in polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) materials for the PCs. Square and hexagonal shaped PCs with sub-micron scale are obtained and confirmed experimentally by optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy and optical diffraction patterns. It is shown that the method is feasible and convenient for 3D PCs fabrication.

Abstract:Photonic crystals were fabricated using self-assembled polystyrene (PS) submicrospheres with different content of nanospheres with different glass transition temperatures ( T g : 100 to −54°C) and their opalescent and mechanical properties were investigated. PS spheres (185.4 nm) and nanospheres were prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization. Nanospheres were prepared using one or two types of monomers, styrene, n-butyl methacrylate, and butyl acrylate with sodium p-styrenesulfonate. Surface morphology, particle size ( D n ), and wavelength ( λ) of photonic crystals were determined from scanning electron microscopy (SEM), effective refractive index equation, and modified Bragg’s law, respectively. The reflection wavelength ( λ max ) was measured from ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. SEM results showed that hard nanospheres were distributed around PS spheres in their photonic crystals. On the other hand, soft nanospheres were coated onto PS spheres in their photonic crystals. With increasing weight fraction of hard or soft nanospheres in the photonic crystals, D n and λ were increased. The value of λ max corresponded to that of λ. The mechanical property of the photonic crystals was measured by the pencil hardness (PH) test. The result showed that by decreasing the T g and increasing the weight fraction of nanospheres, PH was increased. The opal film prepared from PS spheres with 20% N-54 nanospheres had the highest PH (H).

Abstract:Photonic crystals have many potential applications due to their unique abilities to control the propagation of electromagnetic waves. If their bandgap and dispersive properties are modulated by external means, more exciting applications emerge. In this work, we present novel applications and devices created by tuning the bandgap and dispersive properties of periodic photonic crystal structures. We present our designs in both high- and low-refractive index materials. Many tunability alternatives exist including thermal, optical, electrical, microfluidic, and liquid crystals-based. In this paper, we will utilize these methods to implement various photonic crystal-based devices and applications.

Abstract:Electrically conductive polymeric 3D photonic crystals are prepared by the shear ordering of composites consisting of monodisperse core-shell polymer spheres and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Strong iridescent colour indicates that the highly ordered opaline structures are not disrupted by the presence of the conductive nanotube networks. Thermal annealing leads to a significant increase in the overall electrical conductivity of thin-film samples yielding DC conductivities of 10−4 S cm−1, with percolation thresholds of less than 0.4 wt% of SWNT. Such composites with open networks of carbon nanotubes held apart by lattices of hard spheres, give combined conductive properties and structural colour effects, within a tuneable viscoelastic medium, with many potential functional applications.

Abstract:Photonic crystals are a new type of synthetic microstructure materials which have periodical refraction index variations in the space and produce photonic band gaps similar to electronic band gaps produced by the crystal potentials of semiconductors. In recent years, intensive research efforts have been devoted to the studies of photonic crystals due to their unique abilities to manipulate and control photon behaviors. It presents a brief introduction to the photonic crystal and structure characteristics. Some major fabrication methods are demonstrated and various applications of photonic crystals, such as photonic crystal fiber, photonic crystal waveguide, photonic crystal laser, are also discussed.

Abstract:We report laser micro-fabrication of photonic crystal structures in silica glass and photopolymerizing resins, and present a detailed analysis of their structural and optical properties. Photonic crystals with 2D triangular lattice and 3D diamond lattice in glass are found to exhibit moderately pronounced photonic pseudogaps. Formation of planar microcavity is demonstrated in log-pile 3D photonic crystal, laser micro-fabricated in resin.
