Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10<sup>−2</sup> which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:In this research we present various implementations of novel photonic devices using photonic crystals, by engineering the dispersive properties of these periodic structures in a region outside the bandgap. Applications such as spatial beam routing can be attained through careful optimization of various Equi-Frequency Contours. The remarkable difference for the non-conventional-circular-shaped EFC in PhCs opens up a new dimension for the dispersion engineering of wide planar devices and applications based on the shape of the EFC obtained. Circular, square, star, or hexagonal are various possible shapes of EFC that can be achieved and/or engineered. For certain applications specific EFC shapes can be optimal while others are not. In addition to non-channel waveguiding through the periodic structure with sharp bends. We further present reverse engineering of the periodic structures dispersive properties to design various lattice arrangements. Numerical analyses were performed using both plane-wave expansion method as well as the FDTD method.

Abstract:We present and experimentally validate self-collimation in planar photonic crystals as a new means of achieving structureless confinement of light in optical devices. We demonstrate the ability to arbitrarily guide and route light by exploiting the dispersive characteristics of the photonic crystal. Propagation loss as low as 2.17 dB/mm is measured, and the experimental validation of routing structures are presented.

Abstract:Polymers have appealing optical, biochemical, and mechanical qualities, including broadband transparency, ease of functionalization, and biocompatibility. However, their low refractive indices have precluded wavelength-scale optical confinement and nanophotonic applications in polymers. Here, we introduce a suspended polymer photonic crystal (SPPC) architecture that enables the implementation of nanophotonic structures typically limited to high-index materials. Using the SPPC platform, we demonstrate nanophotonic band-edge filters, waveguides, and nanocavities featuring quality (Q) factors exceeding 2, 300 and mode volumes (V(mode)) below 1.7(λ/n)(3). The unprecedentedly high Q/V(mode) ratio results in a spectrally selective enhancement of radiative transitions of embedded emitters via the cavity Purcell effect with an enhancement factor exceeding 100. Moreover, the SPPC architecture allows straightforward integration of nanophotonic networks, shown here by a waveguide-coupled cavity drop filter with sub-nanometer spectral resolution. The nanoscale optical confinement in polymer promises new applications ranging from optical communications to organic opto-electronics, and nanophotonic polymer sensors.

Abstract:A novel implementation of a variable beam splitter using a photonic crystal (PhC) is proposed. The beam splitter consists of two periodic structures: a non-channel dispersion guiding region and a band gap based splitting structure. The dispersion guiding PhC structure is used to route the optical wave by exploiting the dispersion properties of the lattice. Arbitrary power ratio between output beams can be achieved by varying the parameters of the splitting structure. Within the studied range of splitting structures, high output power was observed and verified experimentally.

Abstract:Photonic crystals have many potential applications due to their unique abilities to control the propagation of electromagnetic waves. If their bandgap and dispersive properties are modulated by external means, more exciting applications emerge. In this work, we present novel applications and devices created by tuning the bandgap and dispersive properties of periodic photonic crystal structures. We present our designs in both high- and low-refractive index materials. Many tunability alternatives exist including thermal, optical, electrical, microfluidic, and liquid crystals-based. In this paper, we will utilize these methods to implement various photonic crystal-based devices and applications.
Inverse Design of Polymorphic Dirac-like Cone Dispersion Relationship in Photonic Crystals

Abstract:Dirac-like cone linear dispersion relations in photonic crystals (PhCs) often endow them with unique properties, yet searching for such relations can be challenging. We introduce a generalized inverse design system that, given the dielectric constants and lattice of two-dimensional PhCs, can efficiently determine its structural parameters to obtain its Dirac-like cone dispersion. Employing this inverse design strategy, we design three types of Dirac cone PhCs, including triple degenerate, quadruple degenerate, and triple degenerate under dual polarization with the same frequency. Further investigations reveal a systematic relationship between the radius of the dielectric rods in these PhCs and their corresponding Dirac frequencies across varying dielectric constants. The zero refractive index characteristic is validated in two of the three PhCs studied, as confirmed through numerical simulations. Additionally, by leveraging our proposed inverse design method, we introduce an innovative shell dielectric rod model, which encapsulates a dielectric material, achieving a quadruple degenerate dispersion structure with dual Dirac cones. This research provides a potent tool for the inverse design of PhCs and expands its application in Dirac cone dispersion design.

Abstract:Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with anomalous dispersion in short wavelength region are significant for some applications, such as short wavelength soliton propagation, super continuum generation and short pulse fiber lasing. In this paper, a systematic method for designing PCFs with required anomalous dispersion region is proposed by using a finite difference solver and the scaling transformation of the waveguide dispersion of PCFs. Designed PCF can be anomalously dispersive in the region less than 1.3 μm, which is very difficult to realize in the traditional standard single-mode fibers. The effectiveness of the proposed method is approved by numerical results.

Abstract:Fabrication of micro- or nano-scale photonic devices in polymer materials to control and manipulate light propagation represents a hot topic nowadays. Compared with conventional semiconductor materials, polymers are easy to prepare and have the flexibility of incorporating active materials to realise various functionalities. As one of the most powerful tools in micro-optical fabrication, the two-photon polymerization technique has been widely employed recently to produce multifarious photonic devices, particularly the photonic crystals, which are promising candidates for integrated optical devices. In this article the recent advances in the fabrication of three-dimensional photonic devices such as diffractive optical elements, photonic crystals, and superprisms in polymer materials using the two-photon polymerization technique are reviewed. In particular, the fabrication of photonic crystals in nanocomposite polymers, which are formed by incorporating nanocrystal quantum dots into polymer materials, is demonstrated, providing an interesting physical platform for the investigation into new types of active micro-devices.

Abstract:The present paper covers the various photonic crystals(PhCs) structures mimicking real atom-lattice structures in electronic crystals by using the femtosecond laser-induced two-photon photopolymerization of SU-8 resin. The bandgap properties were investigated by varying the crystal orientations in < 111 >, < 110 > and < 100 > of diamond-lattice PhCs. The photonic stop gaps were present at lambda=3.88 mu m in < 111 > direction, lambda=4.01 mu m in < 110 > direction and lambda=5.30 mu m in < 100 > direction, respectively. In addition, defects were introduced in graphite-lattice PhCs and the strong localization of photons in this structure with defects at lambda=5 mu m was achieved. All the above work shows the powerful capability of femtosecond laser fabrication in manufacturing various complicated three-dimensional photonic crystals and of controlling photons by inducing defects in the PhCs samples.

Symmetrical Anisotropy Enables Dynamic Diffraction Control in Photonics

Abstract:Despite the steady advancements in nanofabrication made over the past decade that had prompted a plethora of intriguing applications across various fields, achieving compatibility between miniaturized photonic devices and electronic dimensions remains unachievable due to the inherent diffraction limit of photonic devices. Several approaches have emerged to overcome the diffraction restriction and leverage the spatial information carried by the evanescent waves. Negative dielectric permittivity materials can be utilized to build photonic crystals (PhCs) based on surface plasmon-polaritons. This approach, however, is known to be exceedingly dissipative, leading to significant optical losses for photonic components. Herein, we report an approach based on the anisotropic scaling of the shapes of PhCs to impede the diffraction barrier and enable a tunable diffraction limit. This approach opens up avenues for high-frequency wave guiding in cermet configuration, which was previously unachievable. Furthermore, asymmetric and symmetric dimer network-type PhCs were explored, with the asymmetric case demonstrating a quasi-bound state in the continuum with a quality factor of up to 41000.

Abstract:In this paper,the effects of the structural parameters and scaling coefficients of photonic crystal fibers on the waveguide dispersion and lumped dispersion are analyzed in depth by using fully vectorial effective index method.The adjustment methods for the photonic crystal fiber dispersion characteristics are summarized,the design method for photonic crystal fibers with specific dispersion characteristics investigated and a photonic crystal fiber with nearly zero flattened dispersion at 800 nm wavelength designed.This fiber is valuable to the study of the propagation properties and applications of femtosecond lasers.

Abstract:Holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystal. (HPDLC) is a kind of switchable volume holography. It can be manufactured according to the photo-initiated polymerization-induced phase separation. HPDLC is composed of parallel, periodic polymer-rich and liquid crystal-rich planes. The diffraction efficiency can be modulated by the application of electric field. HPDLC devices are potentially useful for optical communication, information storage and display. How to increase the diffraction efficiency is the key to application. We investigated the dependence of diffraction efficiency on the refractive index of the polymer, exposure intensity, liquid crystal loading and temperature. The best conditions were found to make the diffraction properties optimized. Now the highest diffraction efficiency was 80.2%. The HPDLC morphologies were also observed and analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Abstract:We report a novel photo-polymerization technique of well- defined three-dimensional layer-by-layer structures by two- photon absorption (TPA in resins. By changing the structural parameters such as the rod diameter, pitch )intra-rod distance in plane) and angular orientation between neighbor planes different lattice types can be accomplished. This enables a systematic investigation of optical properties of photonic crystals (PhCs) made by TPA photo-polymerization. The solidified skeleton of PhC can be utilized as a mold to infiltrate solidifiable dye. Selective removal of the solidified resin can yield in a reverse PhC structures. When the defect-layer(s) are introduced into PhC during fabrication the PhC may act as a high-quality microcavity. A defect mode has been observed for the first time in thus-fabricated structures. Laser- microexplosion fabrication is another promising technique for the PhC and optical memory applications. TO achieve an opening of a full-bandgap the media of high dielectric constant is of request (a high dielectric contrast is necessary).

Abstract:Photonic crystal structures attract much interest, and considerable efforts have been devoted toward hydrogel-based photonic crystal responsive materials. However, the mechanical strength of such composite films is still not desirable. Here, we present a light diffracting hydrogel film with enhanced mechanical property by embedding a self-assembled polystyrene array in a binary hydrogel via a facile photopolymerization technique, which enables the convenient fabrication and shaping of robust photonic sensing films.

Abstract:Lasers have been established as a unique nanoprocessing tool due to its intrinsic three-dimensional (3D) fabrication capability and the excellent compatibility to various functional materials. Here we report two methods that have been proved particularly promising for tailoring 3D photonic crystals (PhCs): pinpoint writing via two-photon photopolymerization and multibeam interferential patterning. In the two-photon fabrication, a finely quantified pixel writing scheme and a method of pre-compensation to the shrinkage induced by polymerization enable high-reproducibility and high-fidelity prototyping; well-defined diamond-lattice PhCs prove the arbitrary 3D processing capability of the two-photon technology. In the interference patterning method, we proposed and utilized a two-step exposure approach, which not only increases the number of achievable lattice types, but also expands the freedom in tuning lattice constant.
